Blue Jays had that game yesterday. 2 runs taken off the board because Bautista’s slide had hindered and impeded the efforts of Forsythe. Bautista slide was clean. He did 'alter' his path, but the contact he made was only minor. There was no intent to injure Forsythe
So, Bautista and EE were ruled out beacause of the Review..

“I guess we’ll come out wearing dresses tomorrow, maybe that’s what everybody’s looking for,” Said Gibbons.

It is only to be seen what this new rule will do to the game. Yesterday, we got a glimpse.

As we get softer and softer as a society, you will see more of this. People been running into people for centuries but all of a sudden, its a problem. Sure, folks are bigger and faster but the person you are steamrolling are too. The whole rule of running over a catcher is a joke too. Too much money now involved, everyone wants their players in a bubble. NFL is even worse. Instant replay too...etc...it just gets old. It will only get worse if you ask me. I just love people that play football and refuse to let their teammates down and want back in the game now complaining their head hurts....what did you think would happen? Enjoy your millions....

But last night was just awful... he barely touched him. and it cost them the game. Might be the Rays only win this year, if you ask me. They stink...hahah

Bullshit call. In no way did that slide alter his throw to first - the throw was off, period.

Well said. Football is a dangerous game... as a player you should know what your getting in too and its not right that the NFL has covered it up all along. But, yeah society is getting soft and now Baseball and sport....

The slide was fine....he shouldn't have reached and grabbed Forsythe's foot.

Looked like an easy call to me. You can not grab a guys foot while he is making a throw.

BTW... I didn't see it live, does anyone know if they called him out for the "new" slide rule? Or was it that he reached out and grabbed his foot.
Cause I could see that being called last year or any year for that reason alone. But I'm not pretending to know every little thing about baseball.

Did he really reach out? Doesn't seem like he extended his arm or move his body towards to extend out or reach out for him. His arm was in his path, but I don't think he reached out.
Anyways, the rule was made to protect dirty plays, I hope it accomplishs this to save a broken leg or other serious injury. But, if slight contact is made to throw off a play with no intent to injure then has this rule made the game any better?
Slides

Under new Rule 6.01(j), which has been added to the existing Rule 6.01 on "Interference, Obstruction, and Catcher Collisions," slides on potential double plays will require runners to make a bona fide attempt to reach and remain on the base. Runners may still initiate contact with the fielder as a consequence of an otherwise permissible slide. A runner will be specifically prohibited from changing his pathway to the base or utilizing a "roll block" for the purpose of initiating contact with the fielder. Potential violations of Rule 6.01(j) will be reviewable using instant replay. Also reviewable will be "neighborhood play" calls, which previously were exempted from replay review. Rule 6.01(j) reads as follows:

Rule 6.01(i) -- Sliding to Bases on Double Play Attempts
If a runner does not engage in a bona fide slide, and initiates (or attempts to make) contact with the fielder for the purpose of breaking up a double play, he should be called for interference under this Rule 6.01. A "bona fide slide" for purposes of Rule 6.01 occurs when the runner:

  • (1) begins his slide (i.e., makes contact with the ground) before reaching the base;
  • (2) is able and attempts to reach the base with his hand or foot;
  • (3) is able and attempts to remain on the base (except home plate) after completion of the slide; and
  • (4) slides within reach of the base without changing his pathway for the purpose of initiating contact with a fielder.

A runner who engages in a "bona fide slide" shall not be called for interference under this Rule 6.01, even in cases where the runner makes contact with the fielder as a consequence of a permissible slide. In addition, interference shall not be called where a runner's contact with the fielder was caused by the fielder being positioned in (or moving into) the runner's legal pathway to the base.

Notwithstanding the above, a slide shall not be a "bona fide slide" if a runner engages in a "roll block," or intentionally initiates (or attempts to initiate) contact with the fielder by elevating and kicking his leg above the fielder's knee or throwing his arm or his upper body.
If the umpire determines that the runner violated this Rule 6.01(j), the umpire shall declare both the runner and batter-runner out. Note, however, that if the runner has already been put out then the runner on whom the defense was attempting to make a play shall be declared out.
Pace of Game

The pace of game program will expand this season to include timed 30-second visits to the pitcher's mound by managers and pitching coaches. In addition, break timers will now mirror the time allotted to broadcasters between innings: 2:05 for locally televised games and 2:25 for nationally televised games, a reduction of 20 seconds each from the 2015 season, when the timers counted down from 2:25 for local games and from 2:45 for national games. The change aims to allow players to more closely match the resumption of play with the return of broadcasters from commercial breaks.

The vast majority of last year's newly implemented pace of game initiatives will continue in 2016. The 2015 changes centered around enhanced enforcement of Rule 5.04(b)(4) - the "Batter's Box Rule" - and the addition of ballpark timers measuring the break time between innings and during pitching changes. Those efforts contributed to a reduction of six minutes and seven seconds (6:07) per nine-inning game from 2014 to 2015, dropping the average length from 3:02:21 to 2:56:14.

And why did Bautista get called out after the play was reversed?

Bautista was cleanly forced at 2B for out #2

The interference call resulted in Out #3, Encarcion at 1B

What about third base runner going home to tie the game? Wasn't it Goins going home and Pillar running to third? Should have been tied and Bautista on Second. EE out at first/

But, after reading into the rule, the runner and base-runner are both ruled out when the runner is found in violation of this new rule.

it looks like it to me.....I agree it was a little ticky tack

Totally opinion based, neither of us are right or wrong, its all about how you see it.

Yeah, I agree it is how you see it. It is what it is.. we will see how this rule plays out the remainder of the season.

No, Bautista was retired as soon as Morrison took the throw and touched second base. His errant actions triggered the third out. And since that made the batter out at first, none of the players who crossed the plate scored

My bad, I watched the slide of Bautista from when Forsythe was off already off the bag to make the throw. You are correct, thanks for the clarification.
