Pinnacle has emerged as the model book to bet sports via the Internet during the last couple years.
With its low juice, extensive betting menu, sharp numbers, excellent software and quick payouts, Pinnacle has become the one place where bettors should have an account.
Those statements certainly are open to debate. But you'd find few, if any, offshore gamblers who don't consider Pinnacle among their top five 'outs.'
"We pay on time and we offer all the products at a lesser price. You can't get anything better than that," said Pinnacle Marketing Director Javier Van Der Biezen.
While some long-time offshore books remain strong, and others have slipped, Pinnacle seems to be gaining the most respect.
Having less juice than its competitors is one of Pinnacle’s main advantages. Rather than going the huge bonus route, Pinnacle's strategy involved developing a large customer base by establishing quick payouts, influential lines, fair numbers and lots of wagering options. Those options include WNBA halftime lines, extensive soccer and various propositions.
"It doesn't come easy," Van Der Biezen said. "People think that when you reduce your juice, you're going to have less profit. Yes, you can sign up two or three times more customers, but you still have to have a good system and good people working for you. These are people who know what they're doing and have a formula that actually works."
Located in Curacao, Pinnacle started in 1998. Der Biezen said the company had a three-year plan that by 2001 would have infrastructure, software and talent in place to grab a huge share of the market. This would be done by offering low vigorish, such as 10-cent lines.
But this isn't an Aces Gold situation where you have to be nervous about your money. Pinnacle wins because it has sharp oddsmakers and heavy volume.
"It's shocking how accurate Pinnacle's numbers are," one professional bettor said. "And they have to be."
"No question they give the player the best chance,” said another professional gambler about Pinnacle's bookmakers. “They have a lot of opinion in their lines and low 'vig' on every sport. You also don't hear stories of customers getting stiffed."
Pinnacle is perhaps the ideal book for a medium-sized bettor, but 'wise' guys also bet there. It's to Pinnacle's credit it doesn't chase away sharpies.
"You must have a very good system in place that limits them (professionals) or keeps them out so you can still be profitable," Van Der Biezen said. "It doesn't come easy, though. You have to be checking 24 hours, otherwise you can get hurt."
