How sad, I own a bigger house in a pretty nice part of Veracruz, Mexico and I would be thrilled to get half that for it! If it weren't for the gringos could CR ever maintain such high housing prices??? I just keep thinking if I could get some gringos to move there instead of overpriced Cancun or Puerto Vallarta I would be sitting pretty...

I agree. How sad. If it weren't for us, Costa Rica would have stayed the same for the next 20 years. The sportsbooks , gambling and internet businesses bring in big money. Therefore the american prices. I don not feel it has alot to do with the north american retirees here. The prices over the last ten years have increased significantly. Housing prices along with food and everything else has become pretty close to the U.S. prices from what I remember.
Anyways, good luck getting gringos to go anywhere but overpriced places; escazu for example.

Sorry can't help but marvel at this, the more I look at those houses the more I wonder. So you have a country where you are doing great if you make say 12k a year and here a pretty damn modest house is 65k or more? I'm sorry thats good ole robbery. After all you could pay about that much and get a place in some parts of the US! Not to mention you get a manageable mortgage payment here, not the ridiculous amount of interest down in CR. Sure CR might be nicer than the parts of the US I talk about, but damn you can make more money working at Mickey D's 40 hours a week than a Tico professional can. The guy who works for Mickey D's in those parts of the country could just about afford a house, but obviously many lawyers or accountants in CR can't. A real sad statement, sad but true...

Houses have always been expensive here, even before the sportsbook guys came so it was not due to that (except for Escazu may be which has gotten to be above and beyond ridiculously expensive)

The problem is that San Jose is a capital (an extremely ugly one but still a capital) and that makes it expensive , also keep in mind that because of the earthquakes we get every now and then the house is made of cement, in the states that is almost never true

Not to disagree too much, but when I first arrived the dollar was a little over a hundred to one colon and everything else was relative price wise. Now, I tell you that everything but my salary is comparable to the US. The price of living is so high that even with the money that I make here it's not quite enough. Water and lights are the only thing that I can say is much less than the US and property taxes. But evertything else is extremely abnormal. Abnormal in the sense that the other two countries on either side of us also have similar living conditions (to a certain extent) located in central amercia, retirees and so-on. But the cost of living is much less, let's see what happens to them in the near future from the dollars that the sportsbooks that go there influence the prices and how they go up there as well. Don't get me wrong I'm in the business, but I don't like what happens to people when they have dollar signs in their eyes. As an example;I have a friend of mine selling a house, he won't take any less than the selling price, not because he's a businees man or because because the house is worth that price, it's because he knows that some dumb ass with alot of cash will come by and fall in love a buy it. Something like the girls at the Del Rey. They were colones girls at one time beleive it or not, now english spoken here 100 dollars. That's what they go for in the US too. hmmmmmm something to think about.

I have also noticed that the Costa Rican people arew also catering more towards the people who can afford these new styled homes. Hot water and kitchen cabinets are now not a luxury but a necessity. In order for us to buy a home, it must have the amenities that we are accustomed. I've aslo noticed that there are alot of people who can aford the higher priced homes but go for the more reasonably priced homes because the moderately priced homes now have many luxuries that they didn't have before.

without a doubt the most annoying thing on this forum, is the stupid "is that right" signature.
