First off, I loved e-check and used that for Pinny & Bodog in the last few months. It was a frickin' convenience! I hadn't used Neteller since my poker days that stopped last year when I bought a condo so I was not impacted by Neteller's departure from the USA. I figured then that I'd focus on sports betting than poker as it doesn't require me to be glued to the screen for hour(s).

Anyway, after I got & cashed a check from Bodog last week, I was able to touch those funds this week to withdraw for a cashier's check via FedEx to BetJM.

I *did not want* to use my home bank to make a cashier's check because I was worried about how it'd return back to my home bank once BetJM (or any book) cashes it wherever they cash it.

So, this morning, I intended to go to 3 nearby banks to see how much the fee was to make a cashier's check. My bank charges a $8 fee.

I first went to 2 of them, the well-known banks to y'all as you have mentioned them several times. Being deaf, I had prepared a note for them and asked "what the fee for a cashier's check & I'm not an account holder with your bank". Both replied the same, "Sorry, we do not issue cashier's checks to non account holders."

Blast it. I guess they prefer to have somewhere to put any liability on, but it doesnt make sense because money orders do not require "someone to have an account" with that money order's issuer, DUH!?

So I skipped the 3rd bank and went to my home bank (with the cash that I had withdrawn the last 2 days at 2 branches, LOL!). The teller was friendly and did ask me for the "payable to" and confirming my name/address to my bank account. I didn't like it that they wanted to type the "payable to" themselves but no difference because they'll see it on their check when it comes back to them (if I had written that part myself manually... so no difference there).

So I gave the payable to information, and I got the cashier's check just fine. Ironically, I asked "what about the fee, $8.00?" She was like, "I waived it." Cool.

Went over to FedEx/Kinko's place & the guy says the cheapest way is ironically "International Priority", not "International Economy", which really surprised him from the look of his face. Great for me, but dang, $42.82 from my location to Jamaica!? Oh well. (The economy price was gonna be $58 something, haha.)

At least BetJM should see my envelope next Monday. Interesting experience but I admit that I am shocked to see $40's and $50's *JUST TO SEND A DOCUMENT/ENVELOPE* overseas!

Similar experiences, anyone?

UPS, Fed Ex, and DHL are brutally expensive when it comes to mailing anything to countries like Jamaica, Panama and Costa Rica. I tried to send a t-shirt and ball cap to Costa Rica from Massachusetts last year and they all wanted over $100 for a package that was less than a pound. UPS was the cheapest of the three at around $119.

I think the banks have a pretty standard policy (nowdays anyway) to not make cashier checks when you dont have an account there, it is possible though that you find a bank that doesnt have that policy

however a money order (I think.......you would have to ask in your Post Office about international money orders) should not have that problem , you simply walk into the Post Office and ask for it

Calvin, the other thing about sending it, courier services are indeed very expensive, however if you asks USPS for international express or something like that it should be reasonable, a certified letter is much much cheaper but be prepared for 1-2 weeks for it to arrive

Wil, that was fascinating... a t-shirt & ball cap for $119!? Wow.

wolfie_cr, thanks for your excellent suggestion. I did consider money order but knew that the limits were quite low and that some books (if not all) don't even accept US Postal money orders, including BetJM.

I had checked USPS website before, and saw that for "Money Order", the max was $1,000. For "International Money Order", the max was $700. Although, I could have gotten several money orders from a grocery store and just send them off as 1 deposit.

I'll keep in mind about the certified letter for international shipping next time, especially if I'm just depositing with a book for the 1st time & can wait a reasonable amount of time.

at ALMOST all banks, anything over $1000 requires you to fill out the PAY TO THE ORDER OF:, and it's a cashiers check

anything $1000 or below, you can just get a bank money order, and you can fill out the above yourself

I remember most books used to reimburse you for Western Union fees, Instacash fees, etc....do they reimburse you for those ridiculous shipping fees on cashier's checks?
