What a dumb bitch. Perfect example of many of the
kids in higher education today. Clueless at best.

So have Cavuto's. He should've explained to her the reason college is really so expensive and whose fault it is.

Higher Education could absolutely be 75% cheaper and higher quality tomorrow.

It is better for the government and higher ed that she has no clue what she is talking about, because if she did then a lot of overpaid cronies would be screwed.

I don't see a lot of "overpaid cronies" except for athletic coaches and athletic directors...who, at the end of the day provide a bit of profit for the schools. The biggest problem with College is athletics...there is an unreasonable amount of money spent to attract the best athletes. CUt all these big sports and make them semi-pro leagues.

School admin budgets are over the top and have been swelling in size for 30 years. University presidents are some of the highest paid employees in the state. When you have the government subsidizing the cost of education it just leads to higher costs. Since 1980, the cost of education has gone up 3-5x faster than inflation.

The entire model is cronyism. Why don't they just compete like businesses in other industries? You really think the free market cost for a Psych 101 class is 4500 bucks? That 2yr rote curriculum stuff would cost next to nothing. Especially given how we can leverage technology now.

Then there is the accreditation process where they try to make it harder so they can keep their monopoly.

The entire industry is socialism/cronyism at the expense of taxpayers.

And ontop of all that, the product kinda sucks these days. As you can see in that interview....

I agree....too much building, too many facilities, too much trying to keep up with the others. Seems to be more about building the endowment than educating students.

What I don't understand is the philosophy that by being in the 1% that means you should pay more in taxes. That's never sat well with me.

Because you make more money, you should pay more than the average joe?

Why isn't a flat percentage fair across the board?

I would welcome a flat tax quicker than a hot virgin with ginger hair. Everyone needs skin in the game.

Yeah that's a problem too but when you get unlimited $ from the government in the forms of grants and loans, then the schools start competing on who can build the better country club atmosphere rather than who can better educate.

It all really goes back to subsidizing just screws everything up whether it be housing, health care or higher ed.

It's unfortunate these kids don't understand that the real enemy isn't some imaginary "1% fat cat" but a screwed up government education system.

If the kids knew who the real culprit was then professors can say bye-bye to sabbaticals every 3-4 semesters, teaching 2 classes a week, charging 100 bucks a textbook (in the age of the internet that is probably the funniest/most absurd part) etc.

Good WSJ piece on U of Minnesota and their bloated admin budgets. 1 employee per 3.5 students...

I think this might be why college costs have skyrocketed in the last 35 years.....

Like many public colleges, the University of Minnesota went on a spending spree over the past decade, paid for by a steady stream of state money and rising tuition. Officials didn't keep close tabs on their payroll as it swelled beyond 19,000 employees, nearly one for every 3½ students. "The more questions I asked, the less happy I was," Dr. Kaler said
Many of the newly hired, it turns out, were doing little teaching. A Wall Street Journal analysis of University of Minnesota salary and employment records from 2001 through last spring shows that the system added more than 1,000 administrators over that period. Their ranks grew 37%, more than twice as fast as the teaching corps and nearly twice as fast as the student body.

Real businesses could never operate like this.

The "oh look little girl, you think everything should be free...how do you want to pay for it? hahahahaha" approach can be entertaining, if he explained to her what was up it would be a lot better for everyone though.

I mean that's great for him he can outdebate a 19 year old that probably spent her weekend having the glee club run train on her, but it ain't solving any problems anytime soon.

He actually does bringup the government issue at the end, but it should've been the entire 9 minute conversation rather than 30 seconds.

He tried explaining to her what was up. He used simple math for the last minute.

He also gave examples of other countries (Greece) to show her what can (and will) happen if these Social Programs that she is pushing for are implemented.

Because the rich get richer and people making less money have almost no shot to ever gain wealth. All the money would stay in the same familys forever.

If a psych 101 class didn't cost 4500 bucks then you would go a long way towards improving social mobility.

I know it isn't a fun subject for TV but if the media and/or politicians properly articulated to these kids why education is so expensive and what can be done to fix that (pretty damn easy problem to solve) then the US would be a much better place. When you don't properly advocate for capitalism, that is when socialism tends to start to get palatable to people. I.e Bernie Sanders popularity amongst the yutes (EDIT) right now....
