Hi all,

I'm really new to this Internet gambling situation and I have a legal question for the masses. My parents tell me that gambling on the Intenet is illegal. My sister does it w/o our parents knowledge and she claims that it IS legal. When i press for details she just says, "I just know it is."

Well here is my dillema. I have watched her win hundreds of dollars the past month and I want to jump into the mix. I'm just afraid of the ramifications of my actions. I'm going to college and don't want to jeopardize my academic status at school with some sort of scandal. On one hand I really want to try this Internet gambling for the upcoming football season. On the other hand as stated before I'm just a "little chicken shit" about the whole idea.

Can anyone help me out with CONCRETE evidence about the leagalization of Internet gambling IN THE UNITED STATES. I'm placing these bets from my home inside the US so I would like to know the rules on gambling. Please don't laugh at me for this post. I'm just trying to find out the truth on this whole Intenet situation. I'm scared, but still wanna play........

thanks for all who are willing to lend info

Its probablt illegal, but they arent going to come after you anyway.

Its kind of like litering, technically it is illegal but the law is not enforced.

Hell anything is illegal if they want it to be. I am sure George Bush and his cronies could figure out a way to label you a terrorist and arrest you for farting if they wanted to badly enough.

Its not whether or not you are doing something illegal, its whether they want your ass or not.

Yes its totally illegal only thing is millions of people are doing it! I'm not saying do it but if you did you'd probably be one of thousands at your school doing it! Bet your sisters picks!!

It depends on the state. To my knowledge, there is no federal law (including the interstate wire act) which prohibits an individual from placing a bet. Most states have laws regulating gambling within the state. However, the money put at risk is typically located outside the US, which raises jurisdictional issues if the State tried to prosecute you for illegal gambling.

I have not seen a single appellate case in the US regarding someone charged with ONLY internet gambling (I think I did see one where someone stole money to gamble, but the focus of the prosecution was on the embezzlement).

On a more serious note, you will probably lose money gambling unless you invest 100's of hours on research. Your sister was probably lucky.

If you're worried about the legality, and you should be worried about how much you'll lose, you should ask yourself "Do I really want to try this?"

Daringly-Thanks for your concise reply. that was 99% of the answer I was looking for. I realize that the financial consequences may outweigh the legal actions. however i really need the money. i'm going to use some of my tuition money this fall.

My best advice to you is, only lose what you can afford. Do not USE any of your tuition money or any money that is not considered DISPOSABLE income.

Hope this helps.

Buddy,
If its your tuition money you'll be playing with you are crazy! Don't start something you will regret much later as it is VERY HARD to stop if you hit early! And if you don't you'll be back home on your PC playing offshore like the rest of us!!

StarvingStudent,

Welcome to the RX!!!

At least a dozen states have passed laws that clearly state internet gambling is illegal.

The majority of states don't have any clear laws yet.

If you want to help out your parents, DO NOT use tuition money. What are the odds of a "pro" being up in the next 6 weeks before fall semester starts? About 58%. What are the odds of someone who's never done this before being up then? About 20%.

Seriously, don't EVER risk something you can't lose. If you lose every penny of the tuition money you risk, will you still go to school? Can you accept those consequences?

A different question you should ask yourself is "what is my bankroll"? A bankroll is the amount of money you are ABLE to lose without affecting your well-being, and continue gambling.

Every person here agrees... Tuition money is not part of your bankroll.

Most of the good points have already been stated by others already, about tuition money and not risking what you can't afford to lose...

My advice, if you go down the road and gamble, is to keep your mouth shut about it....nothing good can ever come of talking to others about your gambling habits or what you're playing this weekend....

If you win, then great, put it in your pocket and forget about it....if you win nobody wants to hear about it.....if you lose, not only are you out money but everyone will give you $hit about your picks, like they just absolutely knew that Team X was gonna kill Team Z....why would someone be so dumb to put money on Team Z.....yet if you talk to these same people a day before kickoff about the game, they think it will be a good game and will be scratching thier heads if asked which team to bet on. Yeah, turns out they were really sure.

All talking about gambling will do is run your reputation down....these same people who think gambling is immoral or gamblers are degenerates are the same ones who find it perfectly acceptable to go home and give thier wife a good slapping and a black eye.

If you want to discuss games, do it on a forum the likes of this....you will find better information than from most of the backstabbers you will find in your day to day life.

Other than that, keep it to yourself. If you win and your friends find out, they'll be indifferent or hitting you up for loans....not to mention possible word of your winnings gets out and you run into an audit down the road...if you lose, those same "friends" as listed above will just be there to give you a bargeload of $hit and rub it in your face.

Another word of advice ...

You mentioned you wanted to wager on the NFL. My advice to you is, don't. You are picking the hardest sport to wager on.

Try the colleges. Much easier. Also, have you considered how many "outs" you will have? Line shopping is very critical.

trust me....

if you want to help your parents... go get a job... this is not the way... & I am sure your parents will agree....

it is very difficult to make money at this, anyone will tell you that....

Consider putting off starting to gamble till you are established in life

Use your tuition money for college, graduate get a job in the field you major in. You'll double or triple your money much faster that way than you would gambling! AND THATS A GUARANTEE!Buddy, lose your tuition money than you are out of college and still can't help your parents!
