in the mean time I still hang on to me 3 (or may be 4 ) year old TDMA ............old and reliable nokia phone

I hate phones with a vengance.....they only

a) inconvenience me
b) wake me up with problems
c) etc etc

why would any one spend over 100 or may be 200 dollars in a phone ........(and well yeah, I would like a phone that can send /receive emails but ICE is not even there yet!)

ICE tricked us into giving up our TDMA line.

I still use a old Nokia 3220.

Never buying Motorola again. Get this, my wife's phone had a 1 year warranty, we had to wait 1 year 6 days for a phone line -- and the phone stops working after a week of use.

I'd like a phone I could write my own programs for. I have some Panasonic phones with Skype at the house, and they have the most idiotic programming imaginable.

But I'm not going to waste my money until we have 3G. Wolfie, do you know what protocol that Chinese company bid to build? HSPDA? W-CDMA? EV-DO?

My Acer netbook has a SIM slot for HSPDA. That would be cool, if we ever get it.

no clue as to what protocol they could use, I googled randomly and they have products that support all the ones you mentioned.

right now I have a gsm phone collecting dust in the closet as my TDMA works fine and simply got a line (after I got an appointment about a year ago)

I remember that I still lived in Sabanilla (circa 2001) when ICE anounced their ADSL product.....and that took over 5 years to actually happen......

if these 3G lines materialize in a couple of years ....I will be very surprised (we will probably see new operators putting their own systems into place before that timeframe.....now LINKING the networks......that I am going to have fun watching.........I know in some of our latin american neighbors you can't call lines operated by a different company OR you pay outrageous fees)

quiet, please

WTF does WiFi have to do with GSM?

Have your VoIP (suck) or Safari-no-flash web surfing (suck), the phone is still going to drop half your local voice calls.
shut up pip-squeak, the phone works fine down here, never had a call drop, but i don't have very long conversations.
maybe you should move out of lyon 13, and you'll be able to get a signal.:):)

Just passing on real experience by other iPhone users here.

It is my presumption this may be do to bad chipset as reported elsewhere, but maybe the phone just sucks. The chipset has bugs and doesn't handle weak signals well. ICE coverage has holes everywhere.

Richard Windsor of Nomura published a research note (spotted at GigaOm) Tuesday singling out the iPhone 3G's chipset, made by Infineon, as the probable culprit for the reception problems we reported on Monday. The dropped calls, service interruptions, and abrupt network switches experienced by iPhone 3G users reminded Windsor of similar complaints five years ago, when 3G phones were first launched in Europe.

"We believe that these issues are typical of an immature chipset and radio protocol stack where we are almost certain that Infineon is the 3G supplier," Windsor wrote. "This is not surprising as the Infineon 3G chipset solution has never really been tested in the hands of users. Some people will not experience these problems as it is only in areas where the radio signal weakens that the immaturity of the stack really shows."

No idea where Lyon 13 is. Is that where you grew up?
