You need to consider a few things......Your old unit uses f-22 which id skyrocketing in price right now and thats pending the POTUS getting his tax on it in Dec...after that it becomes unaffordable to most...
You can switch your system now to a different refrigerant and possibly have the the tax payer pay for it....ck into tax credits for increasing your eer ratio.....
If your a/c man has no idea what im talking about get a different man...

Same thing with yours Barman...your putting $900 into an obsolete system....by the way a "slant" coil is usually an evaporator coil not a condenser....and they are usually in an elec air handler. You should be able to change the entire air handler including the new coil for less than 1800.....and get some of those tax credits your hero loves to sling around like candy...

Pro Poker,

Thanks for the info. The dude was telling me $3600 for a condenser and $5K for a new unit.

Going with a new unit, but was waiting to a get quote from someone else.

Thanks again

Yeah I Also Had A Misconception Re. Heat In Id.

Then everytime I'd see the temp in Boise, 100+! Ouch too much for this N. Mn. kid! I had a cabin on lake Kabetogama (right on the Can. border) for 30 yrs and there where maybe 10 times during that period when we didn't need blankets at night. Loved it.

Am I missing somthing here? Did anyone ask what size of unit your looking for? and I'm not talking 4-9 inches, I mean tons, :howdy: 2-5k sounds about right (installed) not "just the unit".

I would have 3-4 estimates done. Do your homework on systems. My homework lead me to believe Carrier is one of the best if that helps. Only get quotes from those who carry units from the top 3 from your list.

That's why I used such a broad estimate range. There are a lot of factors to consider.

1. One or two story house?
2. How big is the house?
3. What seer are you looking at?
4. What brand are you looking at?

Air salesmen are the same crowd as siding, roofing, financial advisors: they are all predators intent on molesting your bank account. I worked in some of these trades. Obviously if you have an older R-22 unit, then that gives the salesman tons of cost leverage for the switchout. Most communities have a few decent somewhat honest local outfits. Carrier and Trane are top quality commercial (not residential) high end companies, but don't be suckered into contracts with their residential/local distributors because these reps are not many shades above the rest of the pirates. The size of your condensing unit is a generally less significant than reliability, installation, repair parts access, and warranty costs. Bigten, I think the estimate of the total switchout is reasonable (actually a good price) if they are a solid local company. Good luck.

I'm not around here much, but in the HVAC biz. Mostly commercial, but what size (tons) is your system and exactly what were you told is wrong? This time of year techs will try to sell new equipment for commissions and shit. Thta's why I don't pay my guys any commission. I've seen guys sell new systems because of dirty filter or coil, it's really sick. Give me some info and hopefully I can point you in the right direction......

BTW Gabe.........LMFAO:laugh:

Gotta run bud, heading to Charlotte for the weekend to catch some racin'. Just make sure you get a few quotes and don't bite on the salesman pitch BS. If your house is older than 10 years, stay away from a variable speed indoor unit, trust me! Shoot for a 13 to 15 SEER system. BOL:103631605
