Gambling Petition Supporters Say It Will Make The Ballot
June 03, 2004
Have you thought about whether casino gambling should be legalized in Nebraska, along with the use of slot machines around the state?
If you haven’t pondered those questions, you should.
Proponents of a constitutional amendment, which would make it possible for two casinos to operate in Omaha, say their initiative petition drive will succeed. If it does, the issue will go before voters in the November general election.
The amendment brought by a coalition of gambling interests, Keep the Money in Nebraska, also would allow video gambling machines to operate in bars and keno parlors across the state. The coalition raised a war chest of some $800,000.
The 2004 Legislature approved a constitutional amendment that will be on the ballot. It would allow up to two casinos to operate in Nebraska, but the locations aren’t specified. Voters in the proposed host county would approve or reject a proposed casino.
Meanwhile, a spokesman for another group backing a gambling proposal said the organization wouldn't get enough signatures to put its constitutional amendment on the ballot.
