Texas Southern -6 Vs Southern University
When: 6:30 PM ET, Saturday, March 14, 2015
Where: Toyota Center, Houston, Texas Essentially a home game for Texas Southern.
Here’s the ODD fact about this game.
Texas Southern is returning to the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year. And for a second straight time, it was a victory over Prairie View A&M that has the Tigers going to the Big Dance. They won last night in convincing fashion, beating the Panthers 90-77 for its 10th consecutive win.
Few conference tournament semifinal games carried as much weight as last night's game among the SWAC rivals at Toyota Center. With the other semifinalist winner Southern University, ineligible because of academic issues, the winner of TSU-PV was to receive the conference's automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.
Southern University (18-16) and 7-10 in away games
Texas Southern (21-12) had a record of 3 – 10 on Jan. 2, 2015 .
During Nov. & Dec. They played a humongous schedule chasing the dollar and big money pay days by being cannon fodder for the big boys of NCAA college Hoops, but some way, somehow they beat Mich. State and Kansas State on the road.
They lost to Tenn., SMU, Baylor, Florida , Auburn, Gonzaga, Indiana (coach Mike Davis old school was at Indiana after Bobby Knight got fired). They also lost to Eastern Washington Eagles who is 25-8 and in 1st place in the big Sky conference. ALL ROAD GAMES.
By the New Year they stood with a 3-10 record but they went 16-2 in the SWAC conference and now stand at 21-12.
Can anyone name a team of this size that played a tougher schedule and traveled as much?
Anyway it appears that coach Mike Davis teams have jelled and the super tough non conference schedule pays dividends. Note * many times playing a schedule likes this can break a team’s morale and destroy them but Coach Davis has formula that keeps the teams mentality and morale high under defeat to quality big time programs.
It appears that he has finally found a home at this school. He got hired at TSU in Oct. 2012 and in his first year he had a 16-2 SWAC record and won the conference. In his short tenure he has been impressive in building a solid program to compete in his conference ………..having helped develop 2012 player of the year Omar Strong and Defensive player of the year Fred Sturivant. Coach Davis was instrumental in developing 2014 SWAC player of the Year Aaric Murray.
In 2014 Davis led the Tigers to a SWAC Tournament Championship and went on to face Cal-Poly in a NCAA play min game.
Through 5 seasons at UAB Coach Davis owned an impressive record of 122-72 (.629) overall with a 62-34 Conference USA record.
In his 12 years as a D-1 head coach he has 7 20+win seasons.
This year’s team is just as impressive with senior Gurad Madarious Gibbs being named SWAC player of the year and Coach Davis named Coach of the year.
They beat Southern university twice this year …on JAN. 5 they won 59-58 away and
One week ago on March 7[SUP]th[/SUP] they won at home 88-78 and led 51-47 at the half.
Tonight expect no let down and see TSU rolling big time over Southern.
