In the triple option, the qb makes his first decision to give the fullback the ball (if the defensive tackle crashes down, qb keeps the ball, if the dt is blocked, qb gives the fb the ball). Its a run up the middle by the fb, who becomes a blocker upon not getting the ball.
If the qb keeps the ball, he runs down the line of scrimmage. If the defensive end crashes down or beats the block, he pitches the ball to the trailing running back. If the de is blocked, or the qb can get by him, he then wants to turn upfield. The outside linebacker then dictates what the qb does with the ball. Attack the qb, pitch it to the rb. Stay back (or get fooled by a fake pitch), qb keeps it up field.
The triple option by design is all about outnumbering the opponents on the perimeter. The defense knows this, wanting to get lb'ers outside to help. Thats why you keep pounding the fullback up the middle, keeping the lb inside, keeping the dt and de slanting inside. That will open up the outside, allowing the qb and/or the rb to "turn the corner". Thats when big plays are made. Quarterback passing isn't one of the options. Its fullback (or keep it), pitch to running back, or keep it. Hope this helps..
