You got it Sal, congrats! Can you tell us who was involved in the big trade that sent Mahovlich to the Detroit Red Wings during the 1967-68 season?

Nope, anybody else want to take a shot at this question. It was one of the biggest trades in hockey history (to this day) and involved eight players.

By the way Sal, it was Johnny Bucyk that was traded for Terry Sawchuck.

Nope, the answer appears below.

On March 3, 1968, Mahovlich’s playing days with Toronto came to an end as the winger was packaged with Pete Stemkoski, Garry Unger, and the rights to Carl Brewer to the Detroit Red Wings for future Hall-of-Famer Norm Ullman, Paul Henderson, Floyd Smith, and Doug Barrie.

Who was responsible for the Bruins' Teddy Green having a metal plate put in his head because of a stick fight. (Green was no angel and most likely started the fight).

Can't remember Wil, but I'm pretty sure Derek Sanderson discusses in his book "I've got to be Me"

Negatory.

wil.:howdy:

Sanderson's book most likely mentions the incident. I read it years ago and recall him telling the story about being pissed when the Toronto Star referred to 3 injured Bruins as superstar Bobby Orr, hard charging John Buyck and a$$hole Derek Sanderson (Typo that got printed).

Answer

Imagine the worst stick-swinging incident of the modern NHL era, complete with heavy wooden sticks and helmets nowhere in sight.

Voila, you have St. Louis' Wayne Maki opposite "Terrible" Ted Green of the Boston Bruins, circa 1969-70 in Ottawa.

In the midst of a pre-season game, Maki knocked Green down from behind. The latter retaliated by slashing Maki, who hit the ice. Maki speared Green, who again sent Maki flying. The pair soon exchanged vicious slashes until Maki clubbed Green over the head, fracturing his skull.

Green needed three major operations to save his life and had a steel plate inserted in his head. Maki was suspended for 30 days and Green for 12 games when he returned to action one year later. Assault charges were filed against both players, who were later acquitted.

After the game, I met with Tretiak n' Denis.
