- call up Boardroom BBQ and order ribs, wings and beans
- replace the bourbon that somehow evaporated at an alarming rate last weekend
- pick up the BBQ
- arrive home, read the daily II-related topic (replace I with J, I'm tired of keeping that name floating), shake head in disbelief (anyone got a wooden stake?)
- turn on the big-screen HDTV, position armchair squarely in the middle, not too far from the bar, put on ESPN-HD, take the phone off the hook, turn off computer
- 1:05pm EDT Twins at the Yankees - I expect to be surprised today in at least one game, possibly two - Santana has the arm to do it. But the Yankees have beaten this team the last 13 times they've played - they own them. Playoff time is the ONE of 2 times of the year (pennant-race games another) when I don't need to bet individual games to make them interesting. If I'm wrong, it makes an exciting game far less enjoyable if I end up losing - why bother, I figure?
- 4:05pm EDT Marlins at the Giants - Marlins have stated they will pitch around Bonds, not a stupid strategy - but even though the Marlins have the best record in baseball since May, they are going to face Schmidt. This is the second possible surprise, but again, Giants are 24-5 when Schmidt starts and SF has beaten the Marlins 5 of the last 6 - though the Marlins beat them the last time out and of the 5 Giants wins, including one with Schmidt, the margin of victory was one run 3 times and 2 runs in the other 2 games - hardly dominating.
- time for a hot tub soak, reboot the computer and see if a certain sportsbook representative has learned that posting 'scumbag cunts' on a gambling forum works well for shock value but can do pretty long-lasting damage to one's reputation
- make a cursory check of the bourbon level, make sure the 'cat' hasn't spilled it (odd, my brother continues to claim the cat knocks the bottle over, but we don't have a cat), catch some of the Houston game (football, not baseball - tsk tsk)
- 8:05pm EDT (on Fox - pain in the ass, I'll have to change the channel) Cubs at the Braves - considering a futures bet I have on the Cubs to win the WS, I'll just watch it. Key for me will be whether Baker's and Kenny Lofton's presence in the dugout will keep the young and play-off virgins from imploding - this would be the game where that test will have to be passed. I'm hoping Steroid Sammy puts another needle in, and leaves his magic bat 'Corky' at home - anyone but me notice that Sammy also might be doing a little HGH (Human Growth Hormone) on the side, his face is beginning to look like the Hulk's for God's sake (check out the bone above his eye-brows in high-def, it's scary)
- At some point in the 3rd inning, the functioning of my lower extremities will begin to degrade, forcing me to ask my brother to bring me another drink and a bowl of wings - verbal and/or written communication at this point is always iffy, so I'll just stamp my foot once for a drink, twice for food and three times for both.
- by the 7th, I won't remember who the Cubs are playing - by the 8th, I'll be on the floor searching frantically for the remote which I'll have in my right hand. And by the end of the game, I'll sleep where I fall
All in all, a pretty normal day. My schedule for Wednesday is the same, except starting 3 hours later due to the later starts.
Good luck and let the playoffs begin
