Cal Ripken is near the top when it comes to Over-Rated.

Bernard King is forgotten in basketball, but he was a terror for the Knicks when I was growing up.:youmad:

How about Bill Buckner being underrated. He was a great hitter and RBI man remembered for his gaffe in theWorld Series which overshadowed his great numbers. 3000 hits too.

Bill Buckner gets a raw deal from History. People forget that the game was already tied when the ball went through his legs. Their best -case scenario would have been a win in extra innings. They had already blown it earlier in the inning when their were two outs and two strikes and nobody on.

And that was the 6th game. They led the 7th game by a few runs and blew that, as well.:realtongu

I agree with you Blue. But Clip and Tom Brady brought up some good points about Pippen that I had to agree with. One was that he was an excellent defender. Clip brings up the year he had good numbers so I agree that he was a good all-around player for that year and we agree to disagree that he should have been in the top 50.

When Pippen left the Bulls and went to Portland, they were up 18 points late in the 3rd Quarter against the Lakers in game 7 in teh West. They entered the 4th up about 15 and choked. Lakers went on to beat Indiana 4 games to 2, and Shaq got his first ring.

Funny how a few plays can change the history of players and franchises. Same thing with Tom Brady and the bullshit "Tuck Rule" against Oakland. To change the subject real quick...I'm getting real tired of Quartebacks fumbling and having the refs saying that the arm was going forward....it's really wrong the way they are interpreting these plays.:youmad:

1. To the guy who thinks Costner banged Ripken's wife:

http://www.snopes.com/movies/actors/costner.htm

"Myth"...or "FALSE" supposively.

2. Cal Ripken redefined the SS position, the way a running QB is redefining the QB position. But Ripken was a bit overrated. However, his streak is outright, fuckin IMPRESSIVE. I'd like to see people make it through one single 162-game season. These guys play EVERYDAY. Plunked in the back, twist an ankle, sore arm, torn rotator cuff, the flu, family emergency, a day off, spiked in the knee by a cleat, whatever....dude never missed a game. Comparing Cal Ripken's streak of playing SHORTSTOP for 2,000+ games, in 162-game seasons to a little league career is hilarious.

3. I dont think Emmitt Smith is overrated. If you ask football fans, who is the best running back of all-time, he is always behind Jim Brown, Walter Payton, Barry Sanders, etc. Where he should be. Yeah, he holds the major records, but I think the public views him as he should be: somewhere in the top 15 RBs of all time.

OVERRATED
1. Mike Tyson
This guy is one of my favorite, and he's entertaining because he's a nut-job, but he is so overrated as a boxer it isnt funny. He is built for the first round knockout, and people went nuts because of it and his age. But if he had to go 8 rounds, it was game over for him. Sorry Mike, but real boxing matches go a lot deeper than 1 round.

2. Ben Wallace
If this guy didnt have an afro, or if he wasnt with the Pistons, or if he wasnt involved in that Pacer fight, you would hear this guy's name as much as you hear Bruce Bowen's. Which is to say once a year at best. I can get a lot of people in this world to go out thee and play some defense if no real offense is required on their part. He can't score, he can't make free throws, he can't dribble, etc.

UNDERRATED
1. Marvin Harrison
This guy is fuckin OUTSTANDING. I cant get over watching this guy, how smooth his route running is, how RELIABLE his hands are....this guy rarely drops a pass. How quick he is. How smart he is. How quiet he is. Scores a TD and it's all business. Maybe if he busted out some TD celebrations, overdosed, or got some gold teeth, everyone would talk more about this guy. If I am starting an NFL team, and I get first pick of WR, I choose Marvin Harrison every single time.

2. Greg Maddux
Just because this guy didnt throw as hard as Rocket and Nolan Ryan and Randy Johnson and so on, he doesnt get the same respect. This guy proved with his ERA that he could flat-out get people out very very consistently.

not at the nba level you couldnt. just going out there balls out isnt enough at the nba level.

i completely agree with your underrated guys, but not sure how you could put ben wallace on your overrated list.

if people/media gave him credit for an offensive game that wasnt there, that would be different. but hes carved out a niche in the league for doing things that make teams winners.

is he a complete basketball player? no. but i dont think people have ever considered him to be.

there are plenty of guys who fill a role that arent complete basketball players.

underrated:

shawn kemp.

its a shame that the guy will forever be linked to drugs and 10 kids. because there was nobody like him in the mid-90s. just a crazy dunker, but also had a legitimate midrange game where he could face up and knock down the jumper. im not sure what his career #s were from the stripe, but i always remember him as a surprisingly reliable free throw shooter for a guy of his size/position. even when he was overrated and unmotivated in cleveland, he was still one of the best in the league. and that was a reminded of how could he COULD have been. kemp at about 60% was better than most of the league. just a total shame that he flamed out so quickly.

I believe he gets far more media hype and media coverage than what he's worth. He's a great defender. Great hustle player. And when the media finally finds one of these guys, they like to show they are somewhat fair, and use that Hustle Card all of the time. It's always "Ben Wallace and the Bulls". It's never "Bruce Bowen and the Spurs." or "Marcus Camby and the Nuggets."

Like I said, if he didnt have an afro with the headband, and all of that, and he shaved his head....he would be regarded as a good defensive player that is a liability on offense and it would be "Kirk Heinrich and the Bulls" or "Ben Gordon and the Bulls". Just think he is overrated. He's a great defensive player. Nothing more. He's not the glue to a team, and the heart and soul, and a game changer, and all of this stuff that they like to make him out to be. Hes a great defensive player that creates a negative 4 on 5 offensive situation on the other side of the floor, and he is undersized and gets dominated by larger elite centers like Yao and Shaq on the defensive side of the floor.

All of that being said, I love Ben Wallace. Love him, one of my favorite players. But it's funny hearing what people say about him.

im not sure why but maddux strikes me as extremely underrated while tom glavine strikes me as very overrated. normally people link these two together because of their history/longevity on the braves staff as well as their styles. but i just always felt like when maddux was on his game, he was unhittable. but even when glavine was in the middle of a good outing, he could still be hit.

Underrated:

Otis Taylor of KC Chiefs... physically beast-like with complete game. TO could be like this guy if he kept his mouth shut and gave himself completely to football.

Gary Garrison of Chargers...sidekick of Lance Alworth. Avg 18.6 yds/catch on over 400 receptions.

The SoCal crackhead might be the only person in the world with Koufax listed as over rated:

Former Baltimore Orioles and California Angels third baseman Doug DeCinces was convicted of insider trading on Friday.
According to the Associated Press, DeCinces was found guilty on 13 federal insider trading charges after he purchased stock in Advanced Medical Optics eight years ago that eventually netted him a $1.3 million profit.
DeCinces reportedly purchased more than 90,000 shares of the company just before it was sold to Abbott Laboratories after allegedly learning about the sale from a neighbor who was the CEO of Advanced Medical Optics. The 66-year-old now faces the prospect of serving 10 or more years of jail time. However, a sentencing date has yet to be determined.

A former All-Star and Silver Slugger award winner, DeCinces spent the first nine years of his career with the Orioles. During that stretch, he slashed .253/.323/.428 and racked up 107 home runs to go with 397 RBI.
DeCinces continued to thrive with the Angels. In six years with the club, he batted .265 and slammed 130 home runs while racking up 481 RBI.
