i disagree.. how do u assert yourself on a free throw. I've Organized BBall all my life.. the best way to do it is just stay calm and shot the damn ball... In fact, I tend to miss more free throws when i over think it.

you can assert yourself by taking the time and effort to use proper technique for yourself, shaq has sucked at free throws most of his career, but at a point this yr he dedicated himself to it and his ft % took a nice upward turn for himself
