Wireless is expensive but everywhere.

Wifi is basically free (IF you live somewhere where everyone has it). If you are in a populated area, you can place a bet on wifi everywhere. I've even found it in the middle of Iowa once!

I have a Macintosh iBook G4 that comes with a built-in Airport card. It works the same as the regular wireless cards (only it was included, and is somewhere inside the laptop, not an add-on) and I can piggyback on most connections, from up to 200 metres away. I'm also able to hook up a router to dialup and have it work, which is handy when I'm at my cottage or somewhere where high-speed is unavailable.

The thing I love about Macs (and Mac-compatible browsers) is that viruses, popups, etc. aren't normally re-written for Mac compatibility, so I surf the 'net relatively peacefully. The downside, of course, is that it's not as easy to find Mac-compatible software, but not an issue if you use in-demand products like MS Office, etc. It's when you get into up-and-coming products that it gets tricky. But if you upgrade the RAM to a gig, you can use Virtual PC for windows applications. (It's still pretty slow, tho.)

You won't find too many Mac users who say they wish they still used a PC.

I started a thread a few weeks ago about buying my Dell laptop. I'm posting from it now. The wireless router was a major pain in the butt to get set up. I set up a WAP, it's working great now. With football around the corner it's great to eyeball the scores on the internet and still watch the games on big screen Hi Def.

I cannot stress STRONG ENOUGH - DO NOT buy an HP. Their Customer Service is -6 on a scale of 1 to 10.

My one suggestion is not to spend too much money on it, these days laptops (And computers in general) are extremely cheap

Do not spend 2000 bucks ......go to the store and look at their screens and if possible try to type something so that you get a feel of the keyboard

Toshiba has had for a very long time an excellent record in the customer service department

if you are not picky ..........buy a laptop with an AMD chip, better performance than intel with the same price.........(this might not hold true with the newest dual core chips from intel though)

sony is terribly overpriced for what you get

the others are all on par with one another hp tosh

personally wouldnt buy a gateway or some of the similar things

things to look for -- screen, ram, hard disk, chip and must have built in wireless networking

centino dual core i have in mine and more than impressed.

if you decide to get a dell inspiron let me know and ill search you out a coupon.
