The Khalifa’s army consisted of about 60,000 tribesmen, mainly ansars or servants of Allah, referred to as Dervishes by the British.
The battle lasted a little more than five hours. As many as 11,000 Dervishes were massacred and 16,000 wounded. The Anglo-Egyptian losses numbered only 500 (dead and wounded).
Kitchener’s army of 17,600 Egyptian and Sudanese troops and 8,200 British regulars, was heavily outnumbered.
