HOUSTON -- Hall of Fame guard Calvin Murphy was charged Monday with sexually assaulting at least one of his children more than a decade ago.
Murphy was charged with three counts of aggravated sexual assault and three counts of indecency, said Harris County District Attorney Chuck Rosenthal. It was unclear how many of Murphy's children were involved in the alleged assaults, which Rosenthal said happened between 1988-91.

The prosecutor's office notified other jurisdictions about the charges against the former Houston Rockets star.

"He has a number of families around the country, according to our research," Rosenthal said.

Murphy's attorney, Rusty Hardin, did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

Murphy, 55, now a TV analyst for the Rockets, was a star guard for the franchise from 1970-83. The 5-foot-9 player averaged 17.9 points and shot 89.2 percent from the line during his NBA career. He averaged 33.1 points in college at Niagara.

The Rockets said Murphy asked for and received a leave of absence from his broadcasting duties.

Murphy: 'I am not guilty of these charges'
By Pam Easton, Associated Press, 3/31/2004 14:43

HOUSTON (AP) Tears streaming down his face after appearing in court Wednesday, former Houston Rockets star Calvin Murphy insisted he did not molest five of his daughters.

''I am not guilty of these charges,'' Murphy said after his initial court appearance on the charges, at times blotting tears with a white hand towel. ''I can't emphasize that enough.''

Murphy, 55, was a guard for the Rockets from 1970-83 and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993. He was granted a leave of absence from his Rockets' TV job while he fights three charges of indecency with a child and three charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child.

Prosecutor Lance Long said at least one of the five daughters accusing Murphy was as young as 6 when she contends Murphy took her to a hotel room and assaulted her.

On another occasion, Long said one of the five girls had moved in with Murphy after her stepfather passed away.

Long denied money was behind the claims.

Murphy has 14 children 10 girls and four boys with nine women, Long said.

''My heart aches of course for me because I am in the spotlight but it really aches for my daughters, because there are reasons behind this kind of thing that will be brought out later,'' Murphy said.

Murphy's next court date is April 27. The prosecutor said he plans to take the case to a grand jury to secure the indictment needed to send the case to trial.

Murphy has been aware of the investigation for two weeks, after a daughter told him that authorities had contacted her about the allegations, his attorney Rusty Hardin said. Hardin said he didn't know how the investigation began.

Murphy, 5-foot-9, averaged 17.9 points and shot 89.2 percent from the foul line during his pro career. He starred in college at Niagara, and athletic director Mike Hermann said Wednesday the school has put on hold possible plans to expand Murphy's role in a marketing campaign next year.

HOUSTON -- NBA Hall of Famer Calvin Murphy was indicted Thursday on six counts of sexually abusing five of his daughters more than 10 years ago.

The former Houston Rockets star, who is on leave from his job as an analyst on Rockets telecasts, also was arraigned on three counts of aggravated sexual assault and three counts of indecency with a child, Assistant District Attorney Lance Long said.

"Calvin adamantly insists that he is innocent of these charges and is anxious to present his side to a jury at trial," Murphy's lawyer Rusty Hardin said.

Murphy initially was charged March 29 after five daughters accused him of sexually abusing them between 1988-1991, when they ranged in age from 6 to 13. Murphy, 55, has contended the allegations stem from a family battle over money, an explanation Long has dismissed.

I always thought Murphy sounded like a loose cannon calling Rockets games...5 of 6 children, how can you deny this when 5 of 6 of your very own children accuse you of this horrendous act....his own kids!
