MLB Chicago (A) vs. Philadelphia []
Take Philadelphia Phillies
Take the Philadelphia Phillies at home behind Adam Eaton (6-4, 5.99 ERA) over the Chicago White Sox (Javier Vazquez, 3-4, 4.13): How do the Phillies, clawing and scraping their way back to and over .500 after a sweep of their divisional rival Braves in Atlanta a couple weeks ago, then a sweep of the Mets last week, lose two of three to the Royals this past weekend? This team is still in the enigma stage and pitching is still a big question. But Ryan Howard is back from the DL and looking more like the player he was last year (he came off the DL the last week of May and promptly homered in the Braves series and in his last seven games he’s hitting .320 with two home runs and a .600 slugging percentage.) Chase Utley continues to be huge. Shane Victorino has been huge. The story line of Jim Thome returning to Philadelphia for the first time since being traded for Aaron Rowand and others could go either way. Rowand has bounced back from the injuries of last year---he’s one of baseball’s few hockey players in terms of toughness---and is having a great season, while Thome has been banged up and his numbers are down. Players are very well aware of the players they were traded for and as much as Thome might get a nice reception on Monday, Rowand has the incentive of showing his adoring fans that they got the better of the deal. On paper these clubs are pretty similar, but I still look at the consistent fight of the Phillies (who are 32-31), despite the Royals debacle in which they allowed 17 runs on Sunday. And could easily see that embarrassment driving them in this opener and the rest of the series. Not that going home is fun for the Phillies, who are 15-15 in Philadelphia.

Take Astros +165 to Upset Cubs

You would be hard-pressed to find a worse favorite in baseball this season than the Chicago Cubs.

The Cubs have a losing 18-21 record in this favorite role for -12.66 units. Almost unbelievably, as if that is not bad enough, the Cubs are 0-8 when favored in the -150 to -200 range, as they are tonight! Carlos Zambrano has been the starter on three of those occasions, including his last start here at Wrigley Field when he lost 8-5 to the Braves as -170 chalk, wiseguysportsforum and beat up his catcher in the process.

Now Woody Williams of the Houston Astros has seen better days, but one of his best starts this season came here in Chicago, where he limited the Cubs to two runs on six hits in six innings.

Go Under 8.5 with Blue Jays, Giants

Both of these teams have been going Under with regularity, as it is 21-8 in the last 29 Toronto Blue Jays games, as well as 34-25-3, 57.6 percent in all San Francisco Giants games this season.

Matt Morris is quietly putting together a nice season for the Giants, as he is 6-3 with an excellent 2.51 ERA and 1.25 WHIP overall. Furthermore, that ERA drops to a microscopic 2.14 here at home, where the Under is 4-1 in his starts. Morris has incredibly allowed two earned runs or less in six of his last seven starts.wiseguysportsforum

Now the oft-maligned Josh Towers is making his first Major League start since April 27, but this is actually a good situation for him, as the Giants have never faced him and they have scored three runs or less in five of their last six games

Big Al's American League Total of the Week.
Al McMordie lost his Interleague Game of the Year on SF, but won his Totals play on the 'over' in the TB/Florida game to take some of the sting away. Big Al looks to rebound on Monday with one play, and it's his American League Total of the Week. Al's cashed 70 PERCENT of his Totals here this season, so pick up this winner right now.

Monday's Plays..

15 Dime –

WHITE SOX (With Vazquez and Eaton as listed pitchers)
Take the White Sox as the road dog tonight over the Phillies.
This line should really be a little closer to even based on the pitching matchup, but I’ll gladly take the ChiSox at this underdog price.
Adam Eaton will start for Philadelphia and he’s done nothing to merit being listed at this much of a favorite. He’s 6-4 on the year, but has posted a 5.99 ERA in 12 games. The right-hander is 2-1 over his last three starts despite a 7.07 ERA. He has struggled at home with a 2-3 mark and 7.04 ERA in six starts this season.
The White Sox will start Javier Vazquez, whose 10 wins against Philadelphia are the most he’s posted against any opponent in his career. Vazquez has alternated losses and wins in his previous three starts and is coming off a 5-1 loss to the Yankees on Wednesday.
In a hitter’s paradise like Citizen’s Bank Park, I like the White Sox to get the win here. Take Chicago as the road dog for the win.

5 Dime –

INDIANS -1 ½ RUN LINE (With Baek and Byrd as listed pitchers)
Take the Tribe on the run line tonight against the Mariners.
I know Seattle has been rolling lately, but I like Paul Byrd to shut them down tonight while the Indian’s offense gets untracked against Cha Seung Baek.
Byrd is 6-2 with a 2.29 ERA in eight career starts against Seattle and just missed getting a no-hitter against them this year in Cleveland’s home opener hen the game was called due to a driving snowstorm and Byrd one strike away from an official game.
You can bet he’ll be motivated tonight after watching Seattle celebrate in their dugout when that game was called on April 6.
Baek is 0-2 with a 4.76 ERA in two career starts against the Tribe.
Take the Indians on the run line as they grab the win by at least two at home tonight over the Mariners.

Bonus Play: METS

Big Al's National League Game of the Week.
Al McMordie was 1-1 here on Sunday but lost his bigger play -- his Interleague Game of the Year on San Francisco. Today, Big Al has zeroed in on a special play in the National League. It's Al's NL Game of the Week. Don't miss it.

HONDO

Larry Ness' Las Vegas Insider-MLB (75% winners since May 30!)
My Las Vegas Insider is on the SF Giants at 10:15 ET. Not much has gone right for the Giants as of late. San Francisco was swept in a three-game series by Oakland over the weekend, getting blanked in back-to-back games for the first time since June 22-23, 1996. The Giants mustered just five hits to drop Sunday's finale 2-0 for their 12th loss in 16 games. They've now dropped six straight games at home, getting outscored 30-11 but haven't lost seven in a row in San Francisco since an eight-game skid Sept. 7-15, 1993. Is tonight the night the losing streak stops? Toronto is coming off one of its best performances of the season. The Blue Jays matched a season-high with 16 hits in an 11-5 victory over the Dodgers on Sunday, as seven players (including pitcher Roy Halladay) drove in a run! Now here's why the Giants are the play. Matt Morris (6-3, 2.51 ERA) is having an excellent season for the Giants. He's always been a dominant pitcher at home, as his teams have gone 69-38 in his home starts this decade. He's also pitched great against the AL. The right-hander is 15-5 with a 3.44 ERA in 25 career interleague games, including 22 starts. He has been even better lately, going 8-0 with a 2.25 ERA in his last nine outings versus the AL with two complete games, including a 4-1 victory over Oakland on May 20 when he gave up just two hits and struck out nine. Entering this game, Morris has allowed just four earned runs in his last 30 innings, holding opponents to a .170 batting average. All that and Toronto is just 18-26 (minus-$1,105) vs righties in 2007. The Blue Jays will hand the ball to Josh Towers (2-3, 5.15), who is returning to the rotation after Tomo Ohka was designated for assignment last week. Towers went 1-3 with a 4.70 ERA in four starts to begin 2007 before making six relief appearances. He made 15 appearances (12 starts) in 2006, going 2-10 with an 8.42 ERA. He's never faced San Francisco but is 3

series info
<HR style="COLOR: #d1d1d1" SIZE=1><!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->BEGINNING MONDAY JUNE 11

N.Y. Mets at L.A. Dodgers (3) 11th, 12th, 13th

This could be a competitive series, but with three night games scheduled, you have to like New York’s chances. They’ve posted a 15-4 mark in night games on the road (+$1075 with 6.0 runs per game), but we’ll limit ourselves to playing on their righthanders, given LA’s lackluster average of 4.1 runs per game in that situation. PREFERRED: Righthanders vs. the Dodgers.

Chicago W. Sox at Philadelphia (3) 11th, 12th, 13th

Mark Buehrle has always been at his best in the first half of the season, and 2007 has been no exception (+$415, 3.66 ERA in 10 starts). He’ll take a turn in this series and should fare well against a Philadelphia team that is only 6-14 (-$880 with 4.2 runs per game) vs. lefthanders this year. PREFERRED: Buehrle.

Toronto at San Francisco (3) 11th, 12th, 13th

The Blue Jays have had some ups and downs, but have been playing better, and there is nothing wrong with their 12-5 record vs. lefthanders this year (+$780 with 5.3 runs per game in those contests. The Giants have been struggling as of late (2-7, -$600 last 10 days) and they should be available at a generous price when Noah Lowry takes his turn. PREFERRED: Blue Jays vs. Lowry.

BEGINNING TUESDAY JUNE 12

Cleveland at Florida (3) 12th, 13th, 14th

The Indians are a far less imposing team when they are outside the friendly confines of Jacobs Field (only 4-7, -$355 vs. righthanders at night). The Marlins are getting unexpectedly strong work from Sergio Mitre (1.74 ERA in nine starts), and Byung-Hyun Kim (2.78 in four starts), and both may be available, though Mitre has been pushed back because of a sore ankle. PREFERRED: Mitre/Kim.

Arizona at N.Y. Yankees (3) 12th, 13th, 14th

The Yankees got more bad news when they learned Roger Clemens’ return was being delayed by a groin injury. The team, mired well below .500, is losing money here in the Bronx (-$1215), while the D’backs check in with a 12--6 (+$685) record on the road in night games. NY has had a brutal schedule, and now draw an Arizona team playing extremely well (9-1, +$950 last 10 days). How much worse can it get? PREFERRED: Diamondbacks in night games.

Colorado at Boston (3) 12th, 13th, 14th

The Rockies may be tempting by the time this series gets underway, if Boston’s lead has grown insurmountable and the Rockies are still playing well (7-3, +$380 last 10 days). We’ll take a close look on game day, but it’s hard to confront a Red Sox team that is 19 games over .500 the first week in June (+$1735). PREFERRED: None.

Milwaukee at Detroit (3) 12th, 13th, 14th

The Tigers are tough when it comes to inter-league play. They went 15-3 (+$1035) in 2006 and pummeled the Cardinals last month in the three game sweep. They’ve gone 11-4 vs. lefties (+$785 with 6.3 runs per game), so use them vs. Chris Capuano, who has seen his ERA climb after getting off to a fast start. The Brewers are only 11-15 (-$260) on the road. PREFERRED: Tigers vs. Capuano.

Texas at Pittsburgh (3) 12th, 13th, 14th

The Rangers are a team we’ve studiously avoided, and for very good reason (only 20-37, -$1450 in 2007). We’d be tempted to take the Pirates, a team with some capable arms, but they’ve lost a bundle here at PNC Park (-$925). PREFERRED: None.

Washington at Baltimore (3) 12th, 13th, 14th

The Orioles are closing in on .500, and they’ve been scoring plenty of runs against lefties this year (5.3 per game so far). The Nationals have no offense (.243 team BA, only 3.8 runs per game) and they are struggling to cobble together a functional rotation. NIce opportunity for the home team here. PREFERRED: Orioles vs. lefthanders.

L.A. Angels at Cincinnati (3) 12th, 13th, 14th

The Reds seem like a better team than their record reflects (only 22-36, -$1715) but we can’t anticipate when a team with the worst record in the NL will finally turn things around. The Angels are not particularly dependable when they venture away from Anaheim, so caution is advised. PREFERRED: None.

San Diego at Tampa Bay (3) 12th, 13th, 14th

The public is getting the word on just how good the San Diego pitchers are (2.94 team ERA, best in baseball by a wide margin), so prices are really starting to climb. That makes it harder to make money playing on them, but the ERA disparity between these clubs is enormous (Devil Rays 5.54), so we’ll try our luck against the Tampa Bay lefties (SD 10-6, +$305 vs. southpaws with 4.9 runs per game). PREFERRED: Padres vs. lefthanders.

Oakland at Houston (3) 12th, 13th, 14th

The Astros are floundering (2-8, -$790 last 10 days), and they’ve managed to lose a bundle here at MinuteMaid Park (-$920 so far). The Athletics have much better pitching (3.37 ERA, best in the AL), with any number of starters available who can throttle Houston’s anemic bats. PREFERRED: Athletics in all games.

Seattle at Chicago Cubs (3) 12th, 13th, 14th

The Mariners are very much in the AL West hunt, and they have a chance to fatten up on one of the more inept teams in the majors. They are 9-3 against lefthanders (+$870 with 5.3 runs per game), and they’ll be facing a Chicago team that is only 11-17 (-$1475) at Wrigley Field this year. PREFERRED: Mariners vs. lefthanders.

St. Louis at Kansas City (3) 12th, 13th, 14th

The Royals have played respectable baseball on the road this year. particularly against righthanders, but have not enjoyed much success here at Kaufman Stadium (-$900). It’s hard to commit to a team like St Louis, but if KC is ever favored, we will jump in. PREFERRED: Cardinals as underdogs.

Atlanta at Minnesota (3) 12th, 13th, 14th

Both teams have good numbers against righthanders (Braves +$695, Twins +$205) and terrible numbers vs. lefthanders (Atlanta, -$465, Minnesota -$520). We’ll play this series accordingly, passing when righty meets righty or when southpaws meet. PREFERRED: Lefthanders when opposed by righthanders.

UNDER 7.5
NY Mets at LA Dodgers
The Mets' version of ''The Longest Day'' began yesterday in a 3.5-hour game at Detroit. This is the first time this season that they tack on three hours following an East to West trip across three time zones, with no day off and a start time of 10 pm, their time -- everyone in their lineup is past their physical peak tonight. Also, it's a cool climate out in Los Angeles, where the game-time temperature will be in the low 60s and what little wind there is will blow in from centerfield. Nice night to be a pitcher, especially if you're El Kook-ay of the Mets, who won't tire as early under these conditions and has the added benefit of facing a lineup that has accounted for fewer home runs than any other MLB team team except Washington. Meanwhile, Dodgers starter Randy Wolf is liking life since returning to his home area. The Mets have nice numbers vs. lefties but you can't hit .315 against them every night.

NY METS (O. Hernandez) -115 over LA DODGERS (Wolf)

There's not much to choose from this very short
card, but the Mets do look like a solid play. They
have "El Duque" Hernandez in the midst of a very
solid season (1.94 ERA in eight starts) taking on
an LA team that has lost money and struggled to
score runs vs. righthanders (-$435 with only 3.9
runs per game so far). New York has averaged a
healthy 5.4 runs per game against lefthanders
overall, and close to 6.0 runs per game outside
of Shea Stadium. A good chance for the visitor
to get back on track after a tough weekend in
Detroit. Lay the short price in this one.

Recent form for both Los Angeles and Arizona indicates a fairly low scoring game tonight. The Avengers have gone Under the Total in four of their last five, while the Rattlers have done the same in five of their last six. I'll follow the current team trends and look for more of the same tonight, making the Under the choice in this contest

Jim Fiest

A long road trip for the Mets after playing in Detroit Sunday and now flying out to the West Coast. Their outfield is banged up providing little production. Fortunately, starter Orlando Hernandez has been strong with a 1.94 ERA and LA is a great pitcher's park. LA starter Randy Wolf has added a change-up this season and he's become an impressive strikeout pitcher, with 80 Ks in 76 innings. He loves Dodger stadium, too, with a 3.51 home ERA. Look for more pitching than offense in this duel. Play the Mets/Dodgers under the total!
