Teddy Covers - 3% Take the LA Clippers (#574)
We’ve got a clear ‘bet-on’ side tonight and a clear ‘bet-against’; a game where this pointspread is legitimately a notch or two too short. Let me start with the Clippers as a ‘bet-on’ team here.
LA is 16-3 SU, 14-5 ATS coming off a loss this season. That record was 16-1 SU, 14-3 ATS prior to their current three game skid. Two of the three recent losses were of the ‘acceptable’ variety; competitive efforts on the road at Philly and at Boston. But LA flat out ‘no-showed’ in their first game back from the All Star Break against lowly Sacramento, shooting 4-24 with five turnovers in the first quarter to fall into a deep hole. Kawhi Leonard following the defeat: “We weren’t ready to play. I just didn’t feel like we were locked in early and then it was too late to turn the switch on.”
LA was clearly rusty following the nine day layoff. That won’t be the case tonight. They’ll also remember the last time Memphis came to visit, a 140-114 Grizzlies blowout win right her at the Staples Center in January. This is a max motivational spot for an elite team at home…and their opponent is suddenly looking rather vulnerable following a devastating injury.
Jaren Jackson isn’t the ‘household name’ for Memphis – Ja Morant is. But Jackson is their leading scorer and their rim protector on defense; a huge injury loss on both ends of the floor. And Memphis isn’t hanging tough on the highway against quality foes. Since beating the Clips here in early January, the Grizz have a grand total of one road win against an opponent with a winning record – at Dallas when the Mavs were playing without Luke Doncic. They’ve lost by 12 at the Lakers, by 12 at Philly, by 28 at New Orleans and by 24 at Boston in their only other four road games against playoff caliber teams since the calendar turned to 2020. That’s a track record of failure in spots like this one. Take the Clippers.
