KEY STAT: Granada have conceded two goals or more in each of their last four matches

EXPERT VERDICT: A late penalty condemned Alaves to a 2-1 defeat at Valencia on Thursday but the promoted side have acquitted themselves well in their first five games and can respond with a win. Both of Alaves’s home games this season have finished 0-0 but they should have better luck breaking down second bottom Granada, who have conceded 12 goals.

RECOMMENDATION: Alaves

KEY STAT: Cagliari are unbeaten in their last ten home games in all competitions

EXPERT VERDICT: Cagliari were battered 4-0 by champions Juventus on Wednesday without having a shot on target but they can get back on track against an uninspiring Sampdoria side. The visitors have lost four of their last five Serie A games on the road, conceding 12 in the process, and a fourth consecutive league defeat looks fast approaching.

RECOMMENDATION: Cagliari

KEY STAT: Both teams have scored in all of Watford’s games this term

EXPERT VERDICT: Watford have had to negotiate a tough run of opening fixtures this term, but unexpected victories over West Ham and Manchester United set them up nicely for this trip to Turf Moor. The Hornets are clearly adapting to life under Walter Mazzarri and they should have too much in attack for the Clarets.

RECOMMENDATION: Watford to win 2-1

KEY STAT: CSKA Moscow have lost just one of their last seven Champions League home games

EXPERT VERDICT: Tottenham managed just one away win from five Europa League away days last season and they could struggle to quickly bounce back from the 2-1 defeat against Monaco on moatchday one. A trip to Moscow is a tricky one for Mauricio Pochettino's men and the value is with with CSKA.

RECOMMENDATION: CSKA Moscow

KEY STAT: Porto have failed to score on their last four trips to England

EXPERT VERDICT: Porto have not won on English soil in 16 attempts and that dreadful record is set to continue in Leicester’s first ever home Champions League game. The Foxes made a winning debut in the competition at Club Brugge and should have too much firepower for a limited Portuguese side.

RECOMMENDATION: Leicester

KEY STAT: Arsenal have never failed to beat Swiss opposition

EXPERT VERDICT: Basel are running away with the Swiss League but they will find Arsenal a different proposition in this first ever meeting between the sides. However, although the Gunners should win, the Swiss are scoring at an average of around three goals per game and can give them a scare.

RECOMMENDATION: Arsenal to win 3-1

NFL roundup: Vikings end Panthers' home win streak
By The Sports Xchange

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Minnesota Vikings held the Carolina Panthers scoreless for the final 50 minutes and quarterback Sam Bradford engineered three second-half scoring drives in a 22-10 comeback victory on Sunday.
The Vikings (3-0) turned in a sterling defensive effort, recording eight sacks and intercepting Panthers quarterback Cam Newton three times.
The game went off without incident despite protests in streets blocks from the stadium and unrest in recent days after the police shooting of Keith Lamont Scott. Police in riot gear surrounded the stadium as fans made their way into the game.
The outcome snapped Carolina's franchise-record 14-game home winning streak. The Panthers (1-2) have lost one more game than in all of the 2015 regular season.
Bradford completed 18 of 28 passes for 171 yards and one touchdown. Newton was 21-for-35 for 262 yards. He left the game briefly with a foot injury but was cleared to return.

Bills 33, Cardinals 18
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- LeSean McCoy rushed for 110 yards and two touchdowns and Tyrod Taylor scrambled for 78 yards and a touchdown as Buffalo upset Arizona for its first win.
Playing without top wideout Sammy Watkins (foot) and left tackle Cordy Glenn (ankle), the Bills (1-2) rediscovered the rushing attack that led the NFL last season to secure their first victory. In their first game since promoting running backs coach Anthony Lynn to replace fired offensive coordinator Greg Roman, the Bills gained 209 yards on the ground after totaling 151 in the season's first two games
David Johnson rushed for 83 yards and two touchdowns for the Cardinals (1-2), who played their first road game of the season. Carson Palmer completed 26 of 50 passes for 264 yards and was intercepted four times in the fourth quarter.

Redskins 29, Giants 27
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Kirk Cousins threw two long touchdown passes, Dustin Hopkins converted five field goals and Washington sealed a come-from-behind win over New York with two fourth-quarter interceptions of Eli Manning.
The Giants (2-1) built a 21-9 lead on touchdown runs by Vereen and Orleans Darkwa sandwiched around a 23-yard touchdown pass from Manning to receiver Sterling Shepard. The Redskins (1-2) chipped away at the lead in the second quarter.
Washington would go on to score 14 unanswered points on the two big-play passes from Cousins, the first a 44-yarder to DeSean Jackson to make it 21-16 at the half and then a 55-yarder to Jamison Crowder to give the Redskins the lead.

Broncos 29, Bengals 17
CINCINNATI -- Trevor Siemian passed for 312 yards and four touchdowns in his first career road start, lifting Denver over Cincinnati.
After playing well in his first two starts after taking over for future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning, Siemian passed another test on Sunday, going 23 for 35 against a formidable Bengals defense.
Siemian sealed the victory for the Broncos (3-0) with a 55-yard touchdown pass to Demaryius Thomas on third-and-11 with 4:23 remaining in the game. The Bengals dropped to 1-2.

Packers 34, Lions 27
GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Aaron Rodgers threw four touchdown passes in the first half and Green Bay built a 28-point lead over Detroit before holding on in the fourth quarter.
The Packers (2-1) needed every bit of an early fourth-touchdown lead because Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford lit up a depleted defense. Stafford hit Marvin Jones or a 35-yard touchdown with 3:34 remaining to bring the Lions (1-2) within 34-27.
While Rodgers finished the day with only 205 passing yards, the first-half numbers were startling -- he was 12 of 18 for 174 yards and the four scores for a rating of 137.5. Packers wide receiver Jordy Nelson, who had 11 catches for 105 yards and two touchdowns in his first games back after missing 2015 with a knee injury, had six catches for 101 yards and two touchdowns.

Ravens 19, Jaguars 17
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Justin Tucker drilled a 54-yard field goal with 1:02 remaining in the fourth quarter to lift unbeaten Baltimore over winless Jacksonville.
Blake Bortles was intercepted by linebacker Zachary Orr on the Jaguars' final possession to cap a wild finish.
Tucker's field goal, his fourth of the game, completed a frenetic final few minutes that featured a muffed punt, three interceptions and a blocked field goal attempt. Leading 17-16 with 3:06 remaining in the fourth quarter, the Jaguars lined up kicker Jason Myers for a 52-yard attempt. Baltimore blocked the try to regain possession and capitalized on an opportunity to deal Jacksonville its second heartbreaking loss at home already this season.
Quarterback Joe Flacco, who earlier in the game set the franchise record with 21 straight completions, connected with Steve Smith, Kyle Juszczyk and Justin Forsett to move the Ravens (3-0) into position to win the game.

Dolphins 30, Browns 24 (OT)
MIAMI -- It turned out to be a lot tougher than they bargained for but after an 0-2 start to the season, Miami found a much-needed win to as it knocked off Cleveland Browns in overtime at newly renovated Hard Rock Stadium.
The game-winner came when running back Jay Ajayi scored from 11 yards out with 8:26 left in overtime. Ajayi's score was set up one play earlier when quarterback Ryan Tannehill found Jarvis Landry for a 32-yard pass play to the 11. The Dolphins had squandered a 24-13 fourth-quarter lead.
It looked like the Browns would win in regulation when linebacker Corey Lemonier shot through and sacked Tannehill, stripped the ball and fell on it at the Miami 29 with just 22 seconds left. But new kicker Cody Parkey, signed the day before, missed wide left from 46 yards out -- his third miss of the day -- on the final play of regulation. Cleveland fell to 0-3.

Raiders 17, Titans 10
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Forcing three turnovers from Tennessee quarterback Marcus Mariota, Oakland shrugged off a poor performance from its high-powered offense and notched a win.
The Raiders (2-1) allowed 1,035 yards in their first two games -- a win at New Orleans and a loss to Atlanta -- but displayed improvement in this game. Tennessee (1-2) managed 395 total yards as Mariota, who led a game-winning touchdown drive last week in Detroit, struggled.
Mariota completed just 17 of 33 passes for 214 yards and two interceptions while also losing a fumble for a quarterback rating of only 46.8. Cornerback Sean Smith came up with a key pick early in the fourth quarter at the Oakland 48 to snuff out a promising drive.

Rams 37, Buccaneers 32
TAMPA, Fla. -- Los Angeles, held to a total of nine points in their first two games, exploded for five touchdowns and held on to defeat Tampa Bay at Raymond James Stadium.
The game's wild finish included the field and stadium being cleared by a lightning delay with 2:00 remaining. The game resumed after a delay of 69 minutes.
The Bucs got the ball back after the delay and drove to the Los Angeles 15-yard line, but the rally ended there. Quarterback Jameis Winston was tackled at the 5-yard line as time expired, past the line of scrimmage where he couldn't throw a pass, but too late to run to the end zone for a score.

Colts 26, Chargers 22
INDIANAPOLIS -- Andrew Luck threw a 63-yard touchdown pass to T.Y. Hilton with 1:17 remaining, and Indianapolis rallied to defeat San Diego in Lucas Oil Stadium.
The Colts drove 83 yards in six plays for the winning touchdown, converting on fourth down two plays before the game-winning pass. Luck finished 24-for-37 for 331 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
After taking the lead, Indianapolis recovered a Hunter Henry fumble at the San Diego 42 and ran out the clock.

Chiefs 24, Jets 3
KANSAS CITY, Mo -- New York arrived at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday afternoon bearing gifts. Kansas City was only too happy to receive eight turnovers from the visitors that set up all of their points in a big victory.
Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick threw six interceptions, including three that were grabbed in the end zone, snuffing New York's best chances to score.
The Jets also lost a pair of fumbles in the first half, allowing the Chiefs to jump to a lead they never gave up. Offense, defense and special teams all scored touchdowns for Kansas City.

Eagles 34, Steelers 3
PHILADELPHIA -- Carson Wentz continued his amazing rookie season by throwing for two touchdowns as Philadelphia breezed to a victory over Pittsburgh at Lincoln Financial Field.
Wentz completed 23 of 31 passes for 301 yards, finished with a passer rating of 125.9 and has thrown for five touchdowns without a turnover this season. The second overall selection of the 2016 draft outplayed Steelers' All-Pro quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who completed 24 of 44 passes for 259 yards and an interception.
Antonio Brown reeled in 12 receptions for 140 yards, but DeAngelo Williams was limited to just 21 yards on eight carries.

Cowboys 31, Bears 17
ARLINGTON, Texas -- The battle of backup quarterbacks was not much of a contest. Dallas rookie Dak Prescott outplayed his Chicago counterpart, and the Cowboys pounded the Bears at AT&T Stadium.
Dallas improved to 2-1, remaining tied with the New York Giants and one game behind 3-0 Philadelphia in the NFC East.
Prescott had another impressive showing in his third career game and start in place of Tony Romo. The fourth-round pick from Mississippi State completed 19 of 24 passes for 248 yards for a touchdown and ran for another.

Patriots 27, Texans 0 (Thursday night game)
FOXBOROUGH, Ma. -- Rookie Jacoby Brissett, making his first NFL start, got plenty of help from visiting Houston in New England's rout of the Texans on Thursday night.
Brissett, playing for injured Jimmy Garoppolo, who was playing for the suspended Tom Brady, ran a bootleg 27 yards for a touchdown and managed the game well in his debut, as the Patriots improved to 3-0 during Brady's four-game Deflategate absence.
The Texans fumbled away two kickoffs, leading to two New England touchdowns, and were also guilty of an interception. LeGarrette Blount scored from a yard out and then broke a 41-yard TD run in the fourth quarter. Stephen Gostkowski kicked two short field goals.

NFL notebook: Lions' Abdullah likely out for season
By The Sports Xchange

Detroit Lions running back Ameer Abdullah is expected to miss the rest of the season with a foot injury.
According to ESPN, Abdullah's foot injury, which landed him on injured reserve after Week 2, will not permit him to return this season. Injured reserve rules allow for every team to activate one player who misses at least eight weeks.
Abdullah, the Lions' leading rusher with 101 yards on 18 carries this season, hobbled off the field after a 24-yard run late in the second quarter. He has caught five passes for 57 yards and a touchdown.
Initial X-rays on the foot showed no broken bones, but the 23-year-old Abdullah went to Charlotte, N.C., on Tuesday for a second opinion with specialist Dr. Robert Anderson, according to ESPN.

-- Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson sprained his left knee in Seahawks win on Sunday.
Coach Pete Carroll expects Wilson to play next week, but it's likely he will be less than 100 percent.
"A little bit of a knee sprain," Carroll said Sunday afternoon. "He's walking around feeling good about it. He's half-crazy about these things. He's going to will it to happen; that's just the way he is. But most likely, he's going to be fine."

-- New York Giants center Weston Richburg was ejected Sunday after his second unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in the game against the Washington Redskins.
Richburg was given the automatic ejection, known as the "Odell Beckham rule," Sunday in the fourth quarter with the Giants leading Washington 24-23. Richburg is the first player tossed from a game under the rule passed in the offseason, which calls for automatic ejection of any player flagged for two personal foul infractions.
His first unsportsmanlike flag was in the first quarter. Richburg was flagged for jawing at game officials after being called for holding.

-- The Giants saw two key components of their secondary bitten by the injury bug during Sunday's game against the Redskins.
Eli Apple sustained a hamstring injury midway through the second quarter and was ruled out for the rest of the way. Fellow cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie injured a groin midway through the third quarter.
Apple, the Giants' first-round draft pick, has been rotating on the outside with Rodgers-Cromartie. He had one tackle in the game before exiting. Trevin Wade took Apple's snaps on defense and Leon Hall replaced Rodgers-Cromartie.

--- Redskins cornerback Bashaud Breeland suffered a leg injury on the Giants' second possession of Sunday's game between the NFC East rivals.
On the play, Breeland attempted to help on a tackle of Giants rookie receiver Sterling Shepard on a 12-yard reception that gave New York a first-and-goal. It looked like Breeland was stepped on the play and had to be helped off the field where he was carted off for further examination.

-- Green Bay Packers tight end Jared Cook sustained an injured right ankle during the second quarter of Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions.
On the first play after Damarious Randall's interception set up Green Bay at Detroit's 25-yard line, Cook was unable to catch a deep pass thrown slightly behind him by quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Cook, who had one catch for 15 yards, hobbled off the field and was examined by trainers before being taken to the locker room.
Cook missed most of the Packers' offseason program and the start of training camp after minor foot surgery. Neither Cook nor the team said which foot was injured.

--The Kansas City Chiefs were without one of their offensive weapons and the New York Jets had limited use of one of their big play receivers on Sunday.
Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles did not play as he continues to rehab a knee injury that he suffered last October. He has been practicing, but the Chiefs are being conservative in handling his return. For the Jets, wide receiver Brandon Marshall is active, but his participation is expected to be limited because of a knee injury.
Along the offensive line, the Chiefs were without starting left guard Parker Ehinger (concussion/ankle) and guard-tackle Jah Reid (ankle/knee).

Opening Line Report - Week 3
By Marcus DiNitto

Atlanta Falcons at New Orleans Saints (-3/-120)

The Westgate opened New Orleans -3.5, adjusting downward during early wagering, while CG Technology stuck at 3.5 as of this writing. The Saints appear to have a fine opportunity to get their first win of the season – they are 15-5 overall and 8-2 at home against Atlanta since Drew Brees arrived in 2006, a trend that will entice favorite bettors at a field goal or less.

Looking California

-- The Los Angeles Rams and Oakland Raiders posted road victories in Week 3. The Rams win might be the most surprising considering they entered the weekend with nine total points in two games, including ZERO touchdowns. RB Todd Gurley II accounted for two rushing scores himself in the Rams' 37-32 win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After getting blanked in Week 1, LA is 2-0 SU/ATS over the past two. The Raiders rebounded from a home loss last weekend, improving to 2-0 SU/ATS on the road this season.

Feeling Minnesota
-- The Minnesota Vikings lost superstar RB Adrian Peterson (knee surgery) until at least December, if not longer, to injury last weekend. They lost QB Teddy Bridgewater (knee) in the preseason. Trouble? What trouble? The Vikings used a suffocating defensive effort, sacking Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton eight times while picking him off twice to help the Vikes improve to 3-0 SU/ATS. Minnesota looks to keep it rolling with the New York Giants paying a visit to their new palace in downtown Minneapolis next Monday night.

Total Recall

-- The 'over' nipped the 'under' 8-7 in 15 games heading into Monday night's game featuring the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints. In seven games between AFC foes, the 'under' finished 5-2. In five games between two NFC squads, the 'over' finished 5-1. In AFC vs. NFC games, the 'over/under' is 1-1. So far this season the 'over' is 9-7 in each of the first two weeks, and 8-7 in Week 3 heading into Monday.

-- In games with lines of 47 or more points, the 'over' went 3-2 in five Sunday games. The game with the highest line of Week 3, the Monday Night battle of the Atlanta Falcons-New Orleans Saints (53.5), is expected to be a shootout.

-- The five games with the lowest totals on the board saw the 'over' go 4-1, with only the Thursday night game between the Houston Texans-New England Patriots (38.5) going 'under' thanks to Houston's goose egg. The 'under' is 3-0 in three games for the Texans, as they're averaging just 10.7 points per game (PPG) while allowing 17.7 PPG.

-- The 'over/under' went 1-1 in the first two primetime games in Week 3. Officially, the 'over/under' is 5-4 (55.5%) through 9 games under the lights. In 2015, the over finished 20-28-1 (41.7%) in 49 primetime games. In 2014, the over went 33-17 (66%) in primetime games, and the over was 28-22 (56%) in 2013.

Injury Report

-- Bears RB Jeremy Langford (ankle) was carted off in the second half of the Sunday night game at Dallas due to an ankle injury and he did not return.

-- Cowboys WR Dez Bryant (knee) tweaked his knee late in the win against the Bears and he is scheduled for an MRI Monday.

-- Dolphins TE Jordan Cameron (concussion) was forced out of Sunday's game against his old team, the Browns, due to a possible concussion.

-- 49ers TE Vance McDonald (hip) did not make it through the full game in Seattle due to a hip injury.

-- Packers TE Jared Cook (foot) was on crutches and wearing a walking boot after the team's victory against the Lions.

-- Seahawks QB Russell Wilson (knee) checked out early in the rout of San Francisco, and there are reports Wilson might be dealing with an MCL injury. He'll be re-evaluated Monday.

-- Steelers WR Eli Rogers (toe) departed early in Sunday's rout at Philadelphia after suffering a toe injury and he was unable to return.

Looking Ahead

-- The Colts and Jaguars will tangle at Wembley Stadium in London at 9:30am ET next Sunday. The two sides split their pair of divisional games last season, with the Jags snapping a six-game losing streak in the series in emphatic fashion Dec. 13, 2015 by a 51-16 score. The Jaguars covered both meetings last season, but they're just 2-5 ATS over the past seven in the series.

-- The Panthers head to Atlanta to battle the Falcons in a key NFC South matchup. Carolina is 5-2 SU in the past seven meetings in this series, and they'e 6-2 ATS in the past eight.

-- The Bears return home to face the Lions in an NFC North matchup. Lately this series has been all Detroit, with the Lions winning six in a row. The Lions are also an impressive 9-3 ATS in the past 12 matchups. Chicago's last win in the series came Dec. 30, 2012 in Detroit, and the last win against the Lions at Soldier Field came Oct. 22, 2012.

-- The Patriots will host the rival Bills in an AFC East tussle in Foxboro, the final game before QB Tom Brady returns from suspension. New England has rolled in this series, winning eight of the past nine meetings, with their only win coming in a meaningless Week 17 game in 2014 when the Patriots rested most of their starters. New England is 5-3-1 ATS over the past nine against Buffalo.

-- The Texans and Titans do battle in another AFC South fight. Lately it has been all Texans, going 4-0 SU in the past four against the Titans, with Houston covering five in a row. The Texans are also 8-1-1 ATS in the past 10 meetings in the series while winning seven of the past eight.

NFL Week 3 Essentials
By Tony Mejia

No one can say the first two weeks of the NFL season haven’t been eventful. Already, injuries and upsets have probably altered what you thought you knew when September began. Here’s all you need to know about Week 3’s slate:

Monday, Sept. 26

Atlanta at New Orleans: This NFC South clash means everything to the Saints. Either they pull off a victory that renews hope in the Crescent City and rejuvenates the belief that having Drew Brees under center is like having a chip and chair or despair sets in early. The alternative, very simply, would feature finger-pointing. New Orleans would come out of Monday night 0-3, winless in two home games and very unhappy since blame could be laid anywhere. Sean Payton’s defense let it down in the season-opening loss to Oakland, while his offense managed a single touchdown in New York last Sunday. The Falcons are on the road for a second consecutive week and swept both games in this situation last season, winning in Weeks 2 and 3 at New York and Dallas en route to a 5-0 start. New Orleans swept the 2015 meetings.

Vegas Money Moves - Week 3
By Micah Roberts

On Monday night, New Orleans is a 3-point home favorite against Atlanta in a match-up between two of the four worst defenses in the league. So it's understandable that the total is set at 53.5, where the Saints have gone 6-0-1 to the Over in their last seven home games. "This might be the lowest handled Monday Night Football game in its history," Andrews joked. "We don't have anything on it."

Total Talk - Week 3
By Chris David

Week 2 Recap

Another solid back-and-forth week in the totals market as bettors watched the ‘over’ go 8-7-1 with the lone push coming on Monday and that outcome between the Eagles and Bears was helped with 27 unanswered points in the final 30 minutes.

Second-half scoring surges were a common theme last weekend and bettors playing the ‘under’ in a few late games caught some tough breaks in the below games.

Colts-Broncos: 35 points in second-half, two defensive scores by Denver in fourth
Falcons-Raiders: 39 second-half points
Jaguars-Chargers: 31 points with Jacksonville adding meaningless score with 1:03 remaining

Through two weeks, the ‘over’ stands at 16-15-1 through 32 games.

Under the Lights

Atlanta at New Orleans: These “indoor” teams always seem to warrant a high total when they get together based on public perception but bettors should be aware that the ‘under’ is on a 6-3-1 run in this series. Atlanta has seen the ‘over’ cash in its first two games behind an offense (451 YPG) that is clicking on all cylinders and it will be facing a New Orleans defense (452 YPG) that has looked atrocious. The Saints offense has always played better at home and the Falcons defense has surrendered 59 points in their first two games.

Vegas books enjoy stellar NFL Sunday as public gets clobbered in Week 3
By PATRICK EVERSON

Every dog has its day, so the cliché goes. For many of them, that day was Sunday, meaning sportsbooks around Las Vegas did very well – and bettors took it squarely on the chin.

Eight underdogs covered in Sunday’s NFL action, including six notching outright wins, with major decisions coming from Buffalo’s upset of Arizona and Philadelphia’s thrashing of Pittsburgh. The Bills, 5-point home underdogs, rolled 33-18, while the Eagles ripped the Steelers 34-3 catching 3.5 at home.

Other outright ‘dog winners included Minnesota (+6), 22-10 at Carolina; Denver (+3.5), 29-17 at Cincinnati; Washington (+3.5), 29-27 at the New York Giants; and Los Angeles (+3.5), 37-32 at Tampa Bay.

“It was a good day,” said Jay Rood, vice president of race and sports for MGM Resorts, which operates sportsbooks at the MGM, Mirage and several more properties on the Las Vegas Strip. “The Bills set it all up by killing parlays, teasers and moneyline parlays. Philly was the second-biggest decision.

“We are going to have to give a good amount back on the Cowboys, but we will have a good day.”

If not for Dallas dropping Chicago 31-17 laying 6.5, it would have rated even better for Rood – “An 8 out of 10” if Chicago had covered, he said – and for his peers around town. But the Cowboys actually helped downtown at the Golden Nugget.

“It was a great day. The underdogs were great,” said Tony Miller, sportsbook director at the Nugget. “The Bills and the Eagles were monsters for us. Plus, we needed Dallas.”

Over at the Westgate Superbook, Jay Kornegay had similarly good results.

“It was a very solid day for us. We won our three biggest decisions – the Vikings, the Bills and the Eagles. We also won a share of the smaller games,” Kornegay said, noting the Superbook would have liked to see Chicago join that outright winners list. “Chicago outright would have made an impact. It will still end up a very solid day, but not a record day.”

A quartet of games – three from the early kickoffs – made for a strong Sunday at CG Technology books, including the M, Cosmopolitan and Venetian.

“We’ve had better days, but it’s right up there,” said Jason Simbal, vice president of risk management for CG. “We started ahead early after Arizona, Carolina and the Giants lost. Then we capped it off with the Eagles, which was our biggest decision of the day.”

Added Chris Andrews, sportsbook director at the South Point: “The Eagles and Broncos were the best games. It was a very good day, weekend and week. I was very happy with the handle and win.”

Miami falling short as 10-point home chalk in its 30-24 victory over Cleveland proved key for Wynn Las Vegas, which actually lost on the Cards-Bills decision due to some big late action on Buffalo.

“The Bengals were good for us. The Dolphins were good for us – the best one of the day,” said Johnny Avello, executive director of race and sports for the Wynn. “We had a good day, but we’ll give back half of it on the Cowboys tonight.”

Dallas notwithstanding, the bookmakers’ side of the counter won going away this Sunday.

“Not the best day ever,” Miller said, “but a good one.”

Falcons or Saints? NFL bloggers debate who will cover Monday night

Week 3 of the NFL schedule comes to a conclusion Monday night with a big NFC South showdown, as the Atlanta Falcons travel to New Orleans to take on the rival Saints on Monday Night Football.

If you're still unsure of who to back in this primetime matchup, we've enlisted the help of those who know these teams best. Expert NFL bloggers Dave Chote of Atlanta blog, The Falcholic and Andrew Juge of New Orleans blog Saints Nation strap on the pads and debate which team will not only win, but cover the spread Monday night.

WHY THE FALCONS WILL COVER

Dave Choate is one of the editors-in-chief of The Falcoholic, SB Nation's Atlanta Falcons team blog. You can follow them on Facebook and Twitter @TheFalcoholic.

A close game good for Falcons

These games are always pretty close. The Falcons and Saints play some weird games, especially with Sean Payton at the helm for New Orleans, but it's fairly rare that they're blowouts. The closer the game throughout, the more likely the Falcons cover (and hopefully win).

Shootout will help Falcons rise up

Neither team can stop the other. Given that neither of these defenses are particularly inspiring, and both offenses have the chance to put up 40+ points, you have to figure the Falcons can hang in and keep things close, even if they fall behind a little early.

Falcons are better

Yes, this is a Saints team commandeered by Drew Brees and Sean Payton, meaning anything can happen. The Falcons' defense is still a better unit from top to bottom, even if the pass rush is lacking, and the offense is more well-rounded. Atlanta's got this.

WHY THE SAINTS WILL COVER

Andrew Juge writes for Saints Nation. You can follow them on Facebook and Twitter @SaintsNationBlg.

Sean Payton and Drew Brees own the Falcons

The Saints are 14-4 against the Falcons since 2006 when Sean Payton is on the sidelines as the Saints head coach (note: the Saints and Falcons split the series the season Sean Payton was suspended in 2012). They are 15-5 against the Falcons with Drew Brees at quarterback. These include a series sweep by the Saints last year, despite the Saints having a less successful roster. The Saints have had a mix of great teams and mediocre teams since Payton/Brees started in 2006, but the dominance over Atlanta has been consistent throughout. Further, the Saints are 8-2 in the Sean Payton era at home against the Falcons - winning at an 80% clip. The Saints and Falcons have faced off six times on Monday Night Football in their history, with the Saints winning five of those. The continued recent history success against Atlanta is too significant to ignore.

It's the 10 year anniversary of the team's return after Hurricane Katrina

This game will mark the 10 year anniversary, almost to the day (one day later), of the Saints return to the Superdome after Hurricane Katrina. The opponent will be the same to commemorate this event - the bitter rival Atlanta Falcons. This is also remembered as "the Steve Gleason game", where Gleason blocked a punt to help score the game's first touchdown. Gleason has ALS as has been well documented, and he's now a universally adored fixture throughout the community. Gleason will be in attendance and a statue of "the play" sits outside the Superdome as a memorial of that day. There will be pregame festivities outside the stadium and fans will be as loud and motivated as ever to help their team win. Football is sometimes best played on emotion and the Saints will have no shortage of it.

Falcons defense continues to struggle mightily

The Falcons Achilles heel the last several years has been woeful play on the defensive side of the ball. Despite hiring a defensive minded coach in Dan Quinn, this continues to be a major problem area. So far through two weeks, the Falcons are 29th in yards yielded, 27th in points given up, and 27th in run defense. Atlanta's biggest issue last season was an anemic pass rush and they are currently dead last in the NFL with just 1 sack through two games. Not exactly encouraging when you're about to go on the road against one of the most potent offenses in the NFL. And while New Orleans has very similar issues, last week they showed signs of improvement defensively as they held the Giants to 16 points on the road with the only touchdown being a field goal block return.

Monday Night Football betting preview and odds: Falcons at Saints

Atlanta Falcons at New Orleans Saints (-2.5, 53.5)

The New Orleans Saints will commemorate one of the more noteworthy games in franchise history when they host the Atlanta Falcons on Monday night in a matchup of longtime NFC South rivals. It will mark the 10-year anniversary of the re-opening of the Superdome after the venue was forced to close for one season in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

While emotions certainly will not be as high as in New Orleans' win over Atlanta a decade ago, the Saints can use any edge to avoid an 0-3 start after dropping their first two games by a combined four points. "This is an important division game," said New Orleans coach Sean Payton, readily acknowledging the significance is far less than the game from 2006. "One team is 0-2 and trying to get a win, and another team that's 1-1." The Falcons rebounded from a 31-24 home loss to Tampa Bay in Week 1 with a 35-28 road win last week at Oakland, which squeezed out a 35-34 victory at New Orleans in the season opener.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, ESPN.

LINE HISTORY: The Saints opened as 3-point home favorites for this divisional clash. The spread held fairly solid all week until a drop to -2.5 on Saturday afternoon. The total opened at a lofty 53.5 and has yet to move off the origianl number.

POWER RANKINGS: Atlanta (+2) - New Orleans (+4) + home field (-3) = New Orleans -1

KEY INJURIES (for full injury report visit matchup page):

Falcons - WR M. Sanu (Probable Monday, ankle), WR J. Jones (Probable Monday, calf), WR J. Hardy (Questionable Monday, shoulder), LB B. Reed (Questionable Monday, shoulder), LB B. Campbell (Questionable Monday, ankle), LB P. Worrilow (Out Monday, groin), CB J. Collins (Eligible Week 5, suspension).

Saints - WR W. Snead IV (Questionable Monday, toe), DE C. Jordan (Questionable Monday, knee), LB D. Ellerbe (Questionable Monday, quadricep), S K. Vaccaro (Questionable Monday, ankle), T T. Armstead (Out Monday, knee), TE J. Hill (Early October, ankle).

WEATHER REPORT: There is a 25 percent chance of thunderstorms in the New Orleans area for Monday night, but that shouldn't be much of an issue underneath the roof of the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

WHAT SHARPS SAY: "Tricky situation as the Falcons have fared well as a visitor in this series, going 27-10 ATS since 1978, but the Saints are 29-8 SU and 25-11-1 ATS at home under Sean Payton against foes off a win. Stronger edge may lie in the total as Atlanta has played OVER in 4 straight Monday away appearances, while New Orleans is 5-1 OVER in their last 6 Monday Night home games." - Marc Lawrence.

ABOUT THE FALCONS (1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS, 2-0 O/U): Matt Ryan had his fewest touchdown passes (21) since his rookie season in 2015, but he off to a fast start with 730 yards passing with five scores and one interception while leading the league with a 121.4 quarterback rating. There is cause for concern in the passing game with star wide receiver Julio Jones sitting out his second straight practice Friday due to a calf injury, but Atlanta coach Dan Quinn said he expects him to play. The Falcons are receiving solid production from the backfield tandem of Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman, who have combined for 181 rushing yards and 11 receptions. Atlanta's defense ranks 29th overall, allowing an average of 412.5 yards per game.

ABOUT THE SAINTS (0-2 SU, 1-1 ATS, 1-1 O/U): New Orleans was horrendous on defense last season and little has changed -- it ranked 31st in the league with a staggering 451.5 yards surrendered and has been torched through the air for an average of 336.0 yards. Keeping the defense off the field would be easier if the Saints could crank up their running game, with lead back Mark Ingram producing 88 rushing yards on only 21 attempts, including nine carries in last week's 19-16 loss at the New York Giants. "From a rushing standpoint, I think we had some early positive runs, and all of a sudden we end up with the game over and only 13 rushing attempts (overall)," Payton said of the Week 2 loss. "I don't like the balance there." Quarterback Drew Brees has a potent receiving duo in Willie Snead and Brandon Cooks, who have combined for 27 catches and four touchdowns.

TRENDS:

* Falcons are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 vs. NFC South.
* Saints are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 vs. NFC South.
* Under is 9-1-1 in Falcons last 11 vs. NFC South.
* Over is 6-0-1 in Saints last 7 home games.
* Underdog is 5-0 ATS in their last 5 meetings.

CONSENSUS: The public is supporting the home favorite Saints at a rate of 65 percent and the Over is picking up the majority of the totals wagers on Covers with 75 percent.

MNF - Falcons at Saints
By Kevin Rogers

The Week 3 card wraps up at the Mercedes Benz Superdome on Monday night with an NFC South battle. The Saints have stumbled to an 0-2 start, even though the two losses have come in the final seconds. Meanwhile, the Falcons rebounded from a Week 1 home setback to the Buccaneers to beat the Raiders as a road underdog last Sunday. Will the Superdome provide the Saints with some Monday night magic or will the Falcons spoil the party in the Big Easy?

LAST WEEK

New Orleans squandered a double-digit lead in its 35-34 Week 1 setback to Oakland in spite of racking up more than 500 yards of offense. The Saints’ defense improved in Week 2 by holding the Giants’ offense out of the end zone. However, New York returned a blocked field goal for a touchdown and tacked on three field goals to edge New Orleans, 16-13. The Saints managed a cover as 3 ½-point underdogs, in spite of accumulating 288 yards offensively. Drew Brees’ passing numbers dropped from 423 against Oakland to 263 yards against New York, while the Saints cashed their fourth consecutive road UNDER since last season.

Atlanta has played a pair of high-scoring contests so far, cashing OVERS against Tampa Bay and Oakland. The Falcons traveled to the west coast and took care of business against the Raiders in a 35-28 victory as four-point underdogs to improve to 1-1. After Oakland grabbed a 14-13 lead early in the third quarter, Atlanta scored three touchdowns to put the game away and move its record to 6-2 ATS as an underdog under Dan Quinn. Matt Ryan torched Oakland’s porous defense with 396 yards and three touchdown passes, while Atlanta rushed for 139 yards, one week after being held to 52 yards against Tampa Bay.

LINE MOVEMENT

New Orleans opened as 3 ½-point favorites at the Westgate Las Vegas Sportsbook, but that number has dropped to three at many spots with no juice on the Saints at that number. Meanwhile, some books have listed the Saints at -2 ½, but you have to lay -120 to back the home team. The total is set at 53 ½ at most books, while several outlets have the total sitting at 54.

MARCHING FORWARD

The Saints swept the season series from the Falcons last season, including a 31-21 triumph as three-point home underdogs to hand Atlanta its first loss after a 5-0 start. New Orleans used an early blocked punt return for a touchdown, similar to Steve Gleason’s blocked punt that led to a score in the Saints’ victory over the Falcons in 2006 to re-open the Superdome after Hurricane Katrina.

The Falcons couldn’t pick up revenge in the final matchup of the season, losing at home to the Saints, 20-17 as six-point favorites. New Orleans has won and covered four of the past five meetings at the Superdome, while the Saints are 7-3 SU and 6-4 ATS in the last 10 matchups in the series.

NOT SO SUPER

The Superdome is one of the top home-field advantages in the NFL. However, the Saints haven’t defended their home field well from a betting perspective the last few seasons by compiling a 4-10-1 ATS mark as a favorite since 2014. In 2013, New Orleans owned a terrific 8-0 SU and 7-1 ATS mark in the Big Easy, but the Saints have actually lost 10 of their past 14 home contests since November 2014.

OVER THE HILL

The Falcons closed out last season with 10 consecutive UNDERS, but have started the 2016 campaign with a pair of OVERS. Atlanta has finished UNDER the total in each of the past three trips to New Orleans, but those totals closed at 53 ½, 56, and 52 ½. Monday’s total is set at 53 ½, as the Falcons are 8-2 to the UNDER in their past 10 opportunities with a total of 50 or higher since 2014.

COOL AS ICE

Since Matt Ryan took over at quarterback for the Falcons, Atlanta has performed well as a Monday night underdog. The Falcons have compiled a 4-1 ATS record in five opportunities as a Monday ‘dog, including an outright victory over the Eagles in Week 1 last season. However, three of those covers came as a double-digit underdog, while Atlanta has lost five straight primetime games to New Orleans since 2009.

HANDICAPPER’S CORNER

Joe Nelson checks in with his thoughts on this NFC South matchup, “Falling to 0-3 is well documented to present a great challenge to making the playoffs in the NFL making this a critical Monday night home game for the Saints. The pressure on the 1-1 Falcons may be just as great, however. Atlanta was competitive in Dan Quinn’s first season finishing 8-8, but Atlanta wound up just 1-5 in division games and Quinn is now 1-6 vs. NFC South foes after losing at home in the opening week against Tampa Bay.”

“Through two weeks, Ryan has the league’s #1 quarterback rating and he could build on those numbers against a New Orleans defense that has allowed 336 passing yards per game on 8.5 yards per attempt so far this season. Atlanta’s pass defense hasn’t been significantly stronger as a Saints offense that has posted 6.4 yards per play this season could also have great results, but it is the Falcons leading the league with 7.0 yards per play through the first two weeks with 355 passing yards per game as the Monday night total is understandably the highest of the week,” Nelson notes.

FUTURES

The Saints opened the season at 40/1 odds to win Super Bowl LI at the Westgate, but those odds have ballooned to 100/1 following the 0-2 start. Meanwhile, the Falcons were also listed at 40/1 when the season began, as their odds fell to 80/1 after splitting their first two contests.

Monday Night Football Picks: Atlanta Falcons at New Orleans Saints Odds & Predictions
by Alan Matthews

I don't happen to think the Saints are very good and that they are going to miss the playoffs again because of their defense, as usual, but that New Orleans crowd figures to be a bigger advantage than usual on Monday night against Atlanta.

Why? On Sept. 25, 2006, the Saints returned to the Superdome for their first game there since Hurricane Katrina a year earlier. The crowd that night was ear-splitting. You may remember the Falcons went three-and-out on their first possession. On their punt attempt, Steve Gleason, now battling the terrible disease ALS, blocked it and Curtis Deloatch recovered the ball in the end zone for a TD. The Saints won 23-3 and Gleason's blocked punt has since been commemorated with a statue outside the Superdome.

You would have to call this a must-win game for the Saints at 0-2, although it's not impossible to make the playoffs after losing your first two games. Since the current playoff format was instituted in 1990, 26 teams started 0-2 and still qualified for the postseason. Houston won the AFC South last year after a 0-2 start. The 2007 Giants won the Super Bowl despite losing their first two. The last season no 0-2 teams made the playoffs was 2012. Atlanta (1-1) could find itself in sole possession of first place in the NFC South potentially with a win, although I doubt fellow 1-1 teams Tampa Bay and Carolina lose at home on Sunday.

Falcons at Saints Betting Story Lines

Sometimes NFL handicapping really irritates me . Last year when the Saints hosted the Giants, it was a 52-49 offensive extravaganza in the Superdome with a record 13 touchdown passes thrown. Drew Brees tied an NFL mark with seven and had 505 yards. I'm not saying I expected that score again last week when New Orleans visited the Giants, but I certainly didn't expect a 16-13 final score in favor of New York. That terrible Saints defense played that way in the Week 1 home loss to Oakland yet didn't allow an offensive touchdown to Eli Manning and Co., although the Giants did have 417 yards of offense. They won it on a Josh Brown 23-yard field goal as time expired. The Saints have opened the year 0-2 for the third straight year, and both losses came on scores that came with less than a minute to go.

After a huge Week 1, Brees, who generally isn't the same guy away from the Superdome, threw for 263 yards and a touchdown against New York. He again didn't throw a pick and hasn't in his past 268 attempts dating to last season. If you are wondering, the record for most TD passes without an interception through three games in an NFL season is 12 by Peyton Manning in his 2013 MVP season. Brees would need seven TDs on Monday night to match that. Brees did pass Dan Marino last week for third on the all-time passing yardage list. Brees (61,589) won't pass Manning's record of 71,940 for probably three years. Saints receivers Willie Snead (226 yards, two TDs) and Brandin Cooks (211 yards, two TDs) are the only players in the NFL with at least 200 receiving yards and two touchdown catches. They did most of their damage in Week 1.

I honestly didn't think Atlanta would go to Oakland last week and win, but the Falcons did 35-28. Matt Ryan hit Justin Hardy on a lucky deflected 8-yard touchdown pass midway through the fourth quarter to break a 21-all tie. Tevin Coleman basically iced it on a 13-yard TD run with 4:35 left. The Raiders would score right before the two-minute warning but opted to kick off deep with three timeouts left. Atlanta was able to get a first down and run out the clock.

Ryan didn't close last season strong but is second in the NFL in passing yards with 730, has five TD passes to one pick and leads the league with a 121.4 rating. Julio Jones is off to another good start with nine catches for 172 yards and two scores. He is dealing with a calf strain but will play Monday. While running back Devonta Freeman was a fantasy monster last year, he's losing touches to Coleman this season. The latter has 20 carries along with seven receptions for 120 yards. Freeman has 28 carries but just four catches for 20 yards. Tight end Jacob Tamme leads the Falcons in targets (16) and receptions (11).

Just like last year, the Falcons aren't getting to the quarterback. They had a scant 19 sacks in 2015 and have one this year and just two tackles for loss. The team spent its 2016 first-round pick on Florida safety Keanu Neal, but he hasn't been able to play yet with a knee injury and isn't likely to debut here. The team has lost linebacker Paul Worrilow to a groin injury suffered vs. Oakland, and he's out at least four weeks. He was the team's leading tackler the past three seasons but hadn't been starting this year. I actually think Coach Dan Quinn, a defensive guy, could be in some trouble this year if the Falcons finish below .500 because owner Arthur Blank might want a coach with more buzz next season as the Falcons move into their new stadium.

Falcons at Saints Betting Odds and Trends

New Orleans is -3 (-115) with a total of 53.5 that's the highest of Week 2. On the moneyline, the Saints are -160 and Falcons +140. On the alternate lines, the Saints are -3.5 (+110) and -2.5 (-140). Atlanta is 1-1 against the spread this season (1-0 on road) and 2-0 "over/under" (1-0 on road). New Orleans is 0-2 ATS (0-1 at home) and 1-1 O/U (1-0 at home).

The Falcons are 4-1 ATS in their past five Monday games. They are 1-7 ATS in their past eight vs. teams with a losing record and 1-9 ATS in the past 10 vs. NFC teams. The Saints have covered five straight vs. the NFC South. But they have covered just four of their past 14 at home overall. The under is 9-1-1 in Atlanta's past 11 vs. the NFC South. The over is 6-0-1 in New Orleans' past seven at home. The home team is 7-2 ATS in the past nine meetings. The under is 5-1-1 in the previous seven.

Falcons at Saints Betting Prediction

Brees is 15-6 in his career vs. the Falcons and has thrown for 6,421 yards and 38 touchdowns against them. The Saints swept last year, 31-21 at home on a Thursday in Week 6 and 20-17 at the Georgia Dome in Week 17. Brees had only two TD throws combined but wasn't picked off.

This is such a huge game for the Saints not just because of their record but the anniversary that I can't see them losing it. Give the 2.5 points and go under the total because these Falcons-Saints games usually are a bit more low-scoring than we expect.
