KEY STAT: There have been 27 meetings between these sides since the last draw

EXPERT VERDICT: A repeat of the 2014 Super Cup sees Champions League winners Real Madrid take on Europa League victors Seville in Trondheim. Madrid won that game and they can repeat that success even without Portugal's Euro 2016 heroes Cristiano Ronaldo and Pepe. Seville have lost a lot of key men this summer and may need time to gel.

RECOMMENDATION: Real Madrid

Race 12 - Post: 4:52 - 1 mile. PACE - Class Rating: 71 - Purse:$15000 - NYB EXCELSIOR SERIES TWO YEAR OLD C & G DIVISION A

CONSORTIUM CHOICES

Chatsworth Consortium

# 1 ZAMPARA 5/2

# 4 VALRHONA 3/1

# 3 ROLLIN ABOUT 4/1

ZAMPARA is the clear stand out bet in the eyes of the consortium. Could be the most favorable in the race here, showing competitive stats of late. Avg speed is a solid 73. Very likely the class of the group of horses with an average rating of 72. A nice contender. Could more than likely handle this field of starters given the 69 speed rating recorded in his most recent competition. VALRHONA - Colt and driver go together like salt and pepper. They finish in the money 100 percent of their races. If performance in the most recent race is any indicator, this entrant will have a very good shot this time. High last race speed figure. ROLLIN ABOUT - Seems to have a nice class advantage based on the standardbreds he has faced. Don't ignore this colt in your bets - very dangerous with Miller in control.

# 7 RUSTY CARTER 7/2

# 4 YOLO HANOVER 8/1

# 1 KEYSTONE DYLAN 3/1

We've got a feeling RUSTY CARTER is going to get the win. Win clip for this driver-trainer is a sparkling 28 percent - excellent probability. Tough to pass on this gelding with experienced Napolitano in the bike. Major player for the victory. The brain trust always likes a proven performer. This horse's high winning percentage is proof of that. YOLO HANOVER - This standardbred recorded a nice TrackMaster SR last out. Looks sharp to come right back. Chances are greatly improved for harness racers beginning from the 4 hole at Pocono Downs. KEYSTONE DYLAN - Gelding and trainer go together like a hand in a glove. They finish in the money 67 percent of their races. Take a look at this race horse's avg speed rating of 80 and compare to today's class rating. Looks like a good wager.

Race 7 - Claiming - 6.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $9000 Class Rating: 75

FOR FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NOT WON THREE RACES IN 2015-2016. THREE YEAR OLDS, 120 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF TWO RACES SINCE JULY 8 ALLOWED 2 LBS. A RACE SINCE THEN ALLOWED 4 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $5,000.

RECOMMENDED CHOICES

The Walker Group Picks

# 1 GRANDPA'S PRINCESS 6/5

# 4 QUEEN OF HEAT 4/1

# 3 MY FAVORITE TWO 7/2

I've got to go with GRANDPA'S PRINCESS. Earnings per start at the distance/surface is a very good handicapping key. This horse ranks at the top in this bunch. Is difficult not to look at given the company run in recently. Is a strong contender based on figures garnered recently under today's conditions. QUEEN OF HEAT - Flores ought to be able to get this mare to break out sharply in this event. Had one of the best Equibase Speed Figures of this group in her last race. MY FAVORITE TWO - Has earned strong Equibase Speed Figures in dirt sprint races in the past. This mare obviously likes the distance, going 6 for 28 in her races lately.

Race 4 - Maiden Special Weight - 6.5f on the Dirt. Purse: $50000 Class Rating: 60

FOR MAIDENS, FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 119 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS.

RECOMMENDED CHOICES

The Walker Group Picks

# 5 TOASTEDMARSHMALLOW 4/1

# 1 CANTINA BUTTERFLY 20/1

# 3 ARCH PRINCESS 7/2

I've got to go with TOASTEDMARSHMALLOW. With better than average trips to the winner's circle, Salgado should have this filly in excellent position to win the contest. Is difficult not to consider based on speed figures which have been quite good - 56 avg - of late. Should come out strong - I have liked the way this filly has moved rapidly to the front end recently. CANTINA BUTTERFLY - The Equibase class rating of today's affair is much lower than her last race. May best this group here, showing very good figures of late. ARCH PRINCESS - There is a very good chance that this entry's late pace will improve with second time Lasix. She has very good class ratings, averaging 77, and has to be given a shot for this race.

#3 TOUGH TEDDY (ML=3/1)

TOUGH TEDDY - Sophisticated handicappers will tell you that this horse has strong pace. Moves back to a trip at which he ran a rating good enough to make him a contender today. Clearly didn't like the surface of the last race as much as two starts back on the dirt. Watch out today for a return to a sharp race. Capuano moves this gelding to the main track today. Look for a significant improvement from the most recent race on the turf. I think that the addition of the 'shades' today will keep his mind on the race at hand. This entrant collects a lot of money per race. I believe he will add to the lifetime total in this race.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 DOOLITTLE RAIDERS (ML=2/1), #7 SIR LUCA RICHARD (ML=4/1), #5 REGAL RALPH (ML=6/1),

SIR LUCA RICHARD - This grass horse hasn't yet proven that he can run on the main track. Finished ninth in his most recent effort with a mediocre speed fig. When I look at today's class rating, it would take an improved performance to score after that in this field. REGAL RALPH - Hasn't been close to winning at all recently.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - TOUGH TEDDY - This magnificent animal looks good with such a big gap in the spread of the Power Rating between him and the second-rated horse.

Presque Isle Downs - Race #3 - Post: 6:15pm - Claiming - 6.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $10,000 Class Rating: 80

Rating: Golden DollarGolden DollarGolden DollarGolden Dollar

#1 CARIBBEAN CANDY (ML=8/1)
#8 POOR ETIQUETTE (ML=6/1)

CARIBBEAN CANDY - Cox comes to saddle up after getting to know the mare in the last race. I look for this horse to sit chilly and make a big move on the turn, cruising straight on to the finish line. This one could be an overlay today at odds of 8/1. Finished sixth in last race at Presque Isle Downs but was close at the finish. POOR ETIQUETTE - Dickey drops her down to this level. You don't need too much more handicapping knowledge to think this thoroughbred has a good chance at this level. Personally, I wouldn't worry about where she finished in her last race (sixth). Should rebound right here in this race, with some decent odds. Dickey is hoping to get a little more out of this mare by adding blinkers today.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 LULU'S PRIDE (ML=7/2), #5 OVERTIME GOAL (ML=4/1), #4 JAMRAA (ML=5/1),

LULU'S PRIDE - May bounce off of that last physical exertion. OVERTIME GOAL - Ran a great speed figure last race out, but the effort will probably take too much out of her. JAMRAA - Tough to take this runner at the odds after the finish position (sixth) in the last race. There may be a set back today, after the extreme effort last time around the track.

MEET STATS: 262 - 739 / $1408.20 BEST BETS: 43 - 69 / $139.40

SPOT PLAYS: 17 - 68 / $86.60

Best Bet: WARRAWEE ROO (5th)

Spot Play: PURE KEMP (2nd)

Race 1

(9) MUSCLES FOR LIFE had big speed last week in what should serve as a perfect tightener for this Grassroots dash. He returns quicker here and note he won in this type of company two starts back. (2) HOLIDAY PARTY has been on a real roll with six straight wins since June 16th and he is sure to be a threat here. (7) UNITITALIANO BI could show marked improvement here at a price in his third start of the year. (1) DEFI NORMAND should get a good trip here and he is capable of bettering this prediction.

Race 2

(5) PURE KEMP raced decently last week in the first leg of this series, but more importantly, she got a clean line. Expect a more aggressive steer this time. (8) DREAM TOGETHER was a sharp winner last week and she's the one to beat. (4) THE ERM has failed to hold on late in both starts despite getting little pressure. A change in racing style would not be a shock here. (2) SOUTHWIND TESLA stayed trotting foe the first time last week and took a share. She could be right there this time if she minds her manners.

Race 3

(3) GOLDEN SON continues to roll and will be tough to beat here - albeit at a short price. (2) P L JERICO was a narrow loser to a sharp shipper last week; using. (8) LEGGO LOVER has been solid out of town. He could add some value to Tri and Super bets here. (4) MONOPOLY can threaten if he stays trotting this time.

Race 4

(2) OBVIOUS BLUE CHIP - a $35K Harrisburg sale buy - looks ready to roll for a barn that has done well at this meet. (6) JUST TOO SPOILED flew home in her second start and is the main danger. (4) WICKED HILL, a homebred, cranked it up a bit in her August 2nd qualifier and isn't out of this. (9) GRANNY PANTS is the lone winner in the field. She is worth a look for Tri and Super bets.

Race 5

(5) WARAWEE ROO was passively driven last time vs. non-winners of three in what should be a perfect tightener for this Grassroots race; top call. (7) CHESTNUT SCHOFIELD has raced well vs. Grassroots company and may be a good price here. (8) DYNAMIC EDGE should hit the ticket if he doesn't break. (4) MASS BALANCE is capable of filling one of the lower exotic rungs here.

Race 6

(2) WILD ZINGER unleashed an impressive late rush in his debut. If he moves earlier here, he should graduate. (1) SIR GALAHAD showed promise in his lone start last year. He could do some damage here off the shelf. (4) TOY COP gets major post relief and he can be a lot closer here. (5) SOUTHWIND SAVAGE debuts for new connections and is worth a look here.

Race 7

(9) JLS BAD MOON RISIN's only good recent starts have come in Grassroots races. I'll take a stab with him in a wide-open tilt. (1) MUSCLES BOUND has shown some life in his last two starts and is worth including here. (2) MIDNIGHT TOKER is getting closer and wouldn't be a big shock in this field. (6) MATZA MAN is capable, but the final 1/4 of his qualifier is a bit concerning.

Race 8

(7) ETRUSCAN HANOVER was 1/2 a stride short last week. He is sharp and dangerous and will likely get asked for his best earlier in the mile here. (6) FEARLESS MAN has one effective racing style. He will have to be caught. (1) WHISKEY TAX could trip out in the pocket here; beware. (5) OLYMPIC SON looks like he is improving again and is another in with a shot here.

Race 9

(5) HEZA WORKOF ART made two early moves on his way to a sharp win on Industry Day at Grand River over a decent field. He can continue his winning ways here. (3) BLAYDE HANOVER threw in a clunker last time when something was amiss. He is capable of much better. (1) MOHEGAN BLUE CHIP steps up into non-winners of three but he should be able to take a share here. (2) BIG BANG BOOM is another that can get a good trip starting from the inside and take a share.

Race 10

(3) GONNA FLY had a couple of long trips at Hanover in the Dream of Glory series. He should like returning to the big track here; top call. (2) GEORGIES POCKETS has won two Grassroots races in a row but he also hasn't raced in almost a month. He looks best but may come up a bit short here. (6) AGENT DINOZZO was patiently-driven to a maiden win last time. If he stays flat again, he should share here. (1) ZLATAN is hard to like on top, but he can make the ticket. (8) THE LAND SHARK has a solid record and should share if he can get a spot near the front early.

Yonkers: Monday 8/8 Analysis
By Matt Rose

DRF

MEET STATS: 257 - 761 / $1344.40

BEST BETS: 36 - 63 / $123.40

Best Bet: DO OVER HANOVER (11th)

Spot Play: WACO BRUISER (10th)

Race 1

(6) NATIONAL DEBT gets class relief and a slightly better post to work with; underachieving horse can get the best of these with a live trip. (2) DRUNKEN DESIRE A could not sustain a two-move eight-hole effort last out; post relief helps. (3) SAMMY THE BULL N just missed two and three back; player.

Race 2

(6) ROSESCAPE ships in for the Rohr barn, gets Bartlett in the bike and should be forwardly placed. (3) CHEYENNE MOLLY seems capable with a smoother trip. (1) CLIMATE CHANGE was a huge upset winner last week in a strange race and she draws well again; consider.

Race 3

(3) DEADWOOD HANOVER ships in for a new barn, recently added Lasix and may improve versus this weak group. (5) STELLA'S PHELLA is 0 for 57 and counting but he continues to race well. If it were me I would take him to Monti or Plainridge, jog at 1/9 then come back to Yonkers still eligible for this class. (7) THINK BIGGER gets Bartlett in the bike for his local return.

Race 4

(7) WATTS WAS I DRINKN ships to the bigger circuit for Allard sporting a perfect career record. I'd like to see her win but won't accept too short a price. (5) NOMATTERWHATYOUSAY ships from Philly looking for two straight; Dube drives. (2) FROG POND PRINCESS is another shipper joining a new barn; consider.

Race 5

(2) SUNKEN TREASURE debuts for Milici off a winning qualifier and draws well here against a suspect group. (6) SHIFT RIGHT has good speed but clearly needs to show more late. (4) ROLL WITH FRED has hung in the late stages in three consecutive races; tough to endorse on top.

Race 6

(2) ALWAYS COVERS was jammed in traffic but finished with plenty of pace in her local debut; she faces tougher tonight but is worth considering if the price is right. (1) KEYSTONE PAULA closed well from a tough spot last out and now moves all the way inside; logical. (5) ART INSTRUCTOR came from off the pace last week and kept chugging to get the job done and upset; she's looking for four straight.

Race 7

(6) CHEYENNE TRIENGEL has been unlucky with the post draws but she has a live move in her and changes hands to Zeron. (1) HEARTS WILD just missed when last seen locally and Bartlett's back driving. (4) NORTHERN SOIREE has some speed and the talented Bongiorno driving.

Race 8

(8) MR D'S DRAGON fired from the eight hole last out and was game in defeat; gets the call despite another poor post. (4) LONE SURVIVOR debuts for Johnson/Bongiorno and looms a big threat off that angle. (2) MACHARATI finished evenly last out and could hang around for a share.

Race 9

(2) PRETTY BOY HILL ships in for very live connections showing decent form; top billing from this good inside post. (5) STOVER has been a steady commodity all season and he can make some noise from this spot. (1) ELWELL gets much-needed post relief off two no-chance trips.

Race 10

(5) WACO BRUISER moves up in class off a nice win but faces nothing special here; sharp sort can repeat. (3) ROCKIN ROBERT gets post relief and can be close up. (1) JK ALLNITELONG debuts for Allard via claim and draws best.

Race 11

(4) DO OVER HANOVER just failed to a horse who came back and won; Dube should be firing early. (5) DR J HANOVER bumps up a notch in class looking for four straight. (2) MIDNIGHT LIGHTNING was pretty live last week and should offer some value.

Race 12

(7) MAXI BON was rather dull last out after being uncovered a long way; Allard trainee is tough to pass on dropping back to this level. (3) HI HO STEVERINO was pretty good in defeat last week. (5) MEMORY GAME ships back to Yonkers and was facing better when last seen here.

August Pitchers Report
By Marc Lawrence

With the MLB trading deadline officially closed, and the NFL preseason whetting our pigskin palates, the month of August sets the table for the stretch run of the baseball season. Which pitchers can we count on to satisfy our tastes, and which ones figure to sour our stomachs?

Take a look below.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team-starts over the course of the last three seasons during the month of August.

On the flip side, we've also listed pitchers that struggle in August, winning 33% percent or less of their team-start efforts.

To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each April over the last three years. And for your convenience alongside each record we break down each pitcher’s greatest success or greatest failure rate either home (H) or away (A) within his good or bad month.

Note: * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher, maintaining status quo from last season’s August list.

I’ll be back next month with September’s Good Month Pitchers.

Until then, as legendary singer and songwriter Neil Diamond would say, enjoy the hot August nights.

GOOD MONTH PITCHERS:

Arrieta, Jake - 10-5 (6-3 A)

After being Clayton Kershaw-like for nearly 12 months, the Cubs starter has "regressed" back to just being among the best starters in baseball. Arrieta has a nearly 3-to-1 strikeout to walk ratio and only allows a base hit 70 percent of the time in innings pitched this season, among the finest in the majors.

Duffy, Danny - 11-4 (6-1 H)

After starting the season as a reliever, the Kansas City left-hander was forced back into the rotation based on need and he has responded. Since June, after a pair of starts, Duffy has put up an ERA of just over 3.00 and opposing batters have just a .289 on-base percentage against him.

*Gallardo, Yovani - 9-4 (5-2 A)

Not close to the same pitcher he used to be with Milwaukee, with ERA so far this season approaching almost two runs higher than career average (5.37 vs. 3.73). The lost velocity is to blame and secondary pitches have less bite. For Baltimore to win AL East, Gallardo has to find some of his old magic.

Greinke, Zack - 10-5 (5-2 H)

After being on the shelf with oblique injury since late June, Greinke is close to returning for Arizona if no reoccurrence were to take place after a rehab start or two this month. After pathetic start to season, the D-Backs prized starter has cut ERA by 2 1/2 runs and is close to career norms in all major categories. Elite starter.

*Hamels, Cole - 12-6 (8-4 H)

Having typical Hamels season, with low numbers across the board. In bigger picture, underrated high level hurler who has not been getting acclaim after Phillies fall, but has been ace with Texas. As usual, left-handed batters have no chance with .176 batting average and .287 slugging percentage.

*Iwakuma, Hisashi - 12-5 (7-1 A)

Not having normal season for Seattle, with hits allowed much higher than usual for Iwakuma. However, has won four of five starts and the Mariners are 10-3 when the righty has toed the rubber since May 20. With Felix Hernandez back, this pair could lead Seattle charge to postseason.

Milone, Tom - 7-3 (4-1 A)

Milone starts for bad Minnesota club and is inconsistent as ever. Of his 74 hits allowed in only 59 2/3 innings, 11 have gone the yard. Maybe he can keep the ball down and spot his pitches better like previous August’s.

*Sanchez, Anibal - 9-3 (5-1 H)

With decreased velocity and no action on breaking pitches, Sanchez ERA has been six or higher almost all season. Not sure if he can respond this month, with opponents having BA over .300 and owning a WHIP of 1.64.

*Strasburg, Stephen - 13-3 (8-1 H)

Only July 21st, Strasburg suffered first loss of entire season after 13 consecutive wins. Though the fastball is no longer in upper 90's all the time, the breaking pitches disappear from batter's view and he's been exceptional. If Strasburg has true to form month, he will have real shot at 20 wins in 2016.

Teheran, Julio - 11-5 (7-2 H)

Suffered lat strain in late July and has been a victim of no run support from bad Braves club with 2.81 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and opposing batters at only .205 batting average. Note: Teheran’s record also represents his MLB career team start mark during the month of August.

Weaver, Jered - 12-5 (7-3 A)

Shell of his former self at 33. Never a hard thrower, Weaver's fastball only occasionally makes the upper 80's these days and his once dominating changeup is a pitch batter's wait on now with lack of variance of speed of pitches. Will blend good and really awful performances these days.

*Zimmermann, Jordan - 12-6 (8-3 H)

On July 24th had excellent rehab start and will be rejoining Detroit this month. After sensational start with Tigers, Zimmermann was tagged for at least five runs in four of his last five outings. Detroit needs the Zimmermann they had early in the season to have chance to catch Cleveland in AL Central.

BAD MONTH PITCHERS:

Gray, Sonny - 5-11 (0-7 A)

Given Gray's troubles this month, his woes of all season are very likely to continue. Gray simply has been more hittable the entire season, permitting those with bats to hit almost 50 points higher than normal batting average permitted of .233. Note: Gray’s record also represents his MLB career team start mark during the month of August.

*Hellickson, Jeremy - 4-11 (2-9 A)

Back of the rotation starter, Hellickson has largely performed better than expected for Philadelphia and as this article went live, he was rumored to be traded. His KW ratio is significantly higher at 4 to 1 compared to 3 to 1 for his career. Will he be able to maintain the rest of season?

Kazmir, Scott - 5-11 (1-7 A)

The Dodgers port-sider has 9-4 record, but his 4.41 ERA is still above career average of 3.98. Durability has been issue all season, with too many starts around five innings for what is supposed to be Los Angeles No. 2 or 3 starter.

Koehler, Tom - 4-13 (0-10 A)

Above average arm but always up or down and unless he pulls a Rich Hill, at 30 is not likely to change. An 8-8 record, 4.18 ERA and WHIP of 1.46, is about what we have come to expect from Mr. Koehler. Note: Koehler’s record also represents his MLB career team start mark during the month of August.

*Miley, Wade - 5-11 (1-6 A)

Overrated lefty who does not miss many bats and fails to come anywhere close to averaging punch-out an inning. Strictly an innings-eater and provides nothing more than 50-50 chance to win.

Miller, Shelby - 5-11 (2-8 H)

Demoted to Triple-A in July after disastrous campaign. Miller hopes to regain confidence and repair mechanics that are really out of whack and return to Arizona yet this season.

Samardzija, Jeff - 5-13 (3-8 H)

After appearing as the No.3 starter San Francisco wanted for two months, Smards has returned to same old serviceable pitcher of the past and seen his ERA climb from 2.84 to present 4.30 heading into this month.

MLB roundup: Suzuki records 3,000th hit in Marlins' win
By The Sports Xchange

DENVER -- Ichiro Suziki made history Sunday, collecting the 3,000th hit of his MLB career as the Miami Marlins roughed up Colorado Rockies starter Jon Gray and then held on for a 10-7 win in the rubber game of their series.
After three forgettable at-bats, Ichiro Suzuki tripled off the out-of-town scoreboard in right field to become the 30th major-league player to reach 3,000 hits. Suzuki's triple came against left-hander Chris Rusin.
At 42 years, 290 days, Ichiro is the second-oldest player to reach 3,000 hits.
Christian Yelich and Jeff Mathis each had three hits and three RBIs for the Marlins. Nolan Arenado had three hits, including two home runs, and five RBIs for the Rockies.

Yankees 3, Indians 2
NEW YORK -- Masahiro Tanaka pitched effectively into the seventh inning and on the day they officially announced the end of Alex Rodriguez's career, New York topped Clevaland.
Tanaka allowed a run and six hits in six-plus innings.
Jacoby Ellsbury had a sacrifice fly, Didi Gregorius homered and Mark Teixeira had an RBI double for the Yankees, who are one game over .500 for the eighth time since the All-Star break.

Nationals 1, Giants 0
WASHINGTON -- Wilson Ramos hit a tie-breaking homer in the seventh inning, Tanner Roark pitched seven strong innings and Washington defeated San Francisco, taking the deciding game in a series pairing the National League East and West Division leaders.
Leading off the seventh against Madison Bumgarner, Ramos lifted an 0-1 slider to the opposite field for this 18th homer of the season.
Roark allowed five hits and pitched out of trouble all afternoon while striking out five and walking three. Aside from the home run, Bumgarner allowed only Anthony Rendon's fourth-inning double and a pair of walks to go along with seven strikeouts and a hit batter over eight innings.

Mets 3, Tigers 1
DETROIT -- Neil Walker's two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning powered New York to just its fourth win in 12 games with a victory over Detroit.
Former Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez hit Alejandro de Aza with an 0-2 pitch to lead off the ninth and Walker drove a high 1-0 changeup over the wall in right center for his 19th home run.
Addison Reed pitched 1 1/3 innings to get the win, although he was aided by a Tigers' baserunning blunder that got the Mets out of an eighth-inning jam. Jeurys Familia worked the ninth for his 39th save.

Twins 6, Rays 3
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Miguel Sano belted two home runs to lift Minnesota to a series victory over Tampa Bay.
In Sano's first at-bat, he sent a foul ball so high that it hit the roof at Tropicana Field -- becoming the first player to do so in fair territory in 19 seasons of Rays baseball. The ball was eventually caught by third baseman Evan Longoria.
In the third inning, Sano changed the trajectory a bit and launched a three-run homer to left-center field for his 17th blast of the season to give the Twins a 3-1 lead. He came back with a solo shot in the ninth for his second career multi-homer performance.

Reds 7, Pirates 3
PITTSBURGH -- Billy Hamilton had three hits, scored three runs, stole four bases and made a leaping, backhand catch in center field to help Cincinnati beat Pittsburgh.
Hamilton was 3-for-4 with a walk before his day ended when he finally was caught stealing in the ninth inning.
Reds starter Dan Straily needed just 41 pitches to remain perfect through four innings before giving up a homer to Matt Joyce in the fifth. Josh Harrison also hit a solo homer in the sixth for Pittsburgh.

Royals 7, Blue Jays 1
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kendrys Morales hit an eighth-inning grand slam and Yordano Ventura pitched a sturdy 6 2/3 innings as Kansas City topped Toronto.
Ventura, who claimed his first win since June 17, was charged with one run on five hits and four walks, throwing 106 pitches.
Marcus Stroman took the loss, giving up three runs on seven hits, including Alcides Escobar's home run in the fifth.

Orioles 10, White Sox 2
CHICAGO -- Manny Machado homered a career-high three times in three innings as Baltimore routed Chicago to win the three-game series.
Machado hit a two-run shot, a three-run drive and another two-run blast to become the second player in major league history to homer in the first, second and third innings since Carl Reynolds of the White Sox in 1930.
Machado is also the first Orioles player to hit a trio of homers in a game since Chris Davis in 2014. The third baseman has 25 this season and collected a career-high seven RBIs. Davis and J.J. Hardy also homered for the Orioles, who top the majors with 168 home runs.

Braves 6, Cardinals 3
ST. LOUIS -- Scoring three runs in the top of the first and another three in the second, Atlanta handed St. Louis a series loss.
Aided by the early outburst, starter Mike Foltynewicz worked six solid innings, scattering six hits and allowing a run with two walks and four strikeouts. Four relievers combined for the last nine outs, with closer Jim Johnson collecting his eighth save.
Adam Wainwright allowed six runs on nine hits over six innings to take the loss.

Rangers 5, Astros 3 (11 innings)
HOUSTON -- Ian Desmond and Rougned Odor produced run-scoring hits in the top of the 11th inning and Texas recovered from a ninth-inning collapse to beat Houston and take the rubber match of the three-game series at Minute Maid Park.
The Rangers extended their lead in the American League West to 7 1/2 games over the Astros by tagging Chris Devenski for a second consecutive game with Shin-Soo Choo opening the 11th with a double to right field before Desmond laced an RBI single to left.
Making his eighth start of the season and fifth since returning from the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder discomfort, Texas starter Yu Darvish allowed five hits and struck out eight in seven innings.

Mariners 3, Angels 1
SEATTLE -- Left-handed starter James Paxton came within two outs of pitching the first complete game of his career before taking a line drive off his left elbow in the ninth inning of Seattle's win over Los Angeles.
Paxton allowed just five hits over 8 1/3 innings, the longest outing of his career, and struck out Mike Trout four times on the Angels star's 25th birthday. Paxton was in total command before a liner off the bat of Angels shortstop Andrelton Simmons hit him flush in the left elbow. Paxton went down on one knee and was in obvious pain as trainers came out to check on him, but he was able to walk off under his own power while nursing the left arm.

Cubs 3, A's 1
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Kyle Hendricks allowed one run over 7 1/3 innings, Kris Bryant and Jorge Soler hit solo home runs, and Chicago completed a three-game sweep of Oakland.
Hendricks, who improved to 7-1 over his past nine starts, allowed three hits, struck out four and walked none. He lowered his ERA to 2.17, the second lowest in the major leagues.
The Cubs won their seventh straight game and improved to a major league best 69-41. They moved a season-high 28 games over .500.

Diamondbacks 9, Brewers 3
PHOENIX -- Jake Lamb had three hits, including a tiebreaking homer, and Phil Gosselin also homered in Arizona's victory over Milwaukee at Chase Field.
Lamb and Gosselin belted two-run homers in a five-run fifth, when the Diamondbacks tied a franchise record with five extra-base hits in an inning.
Chris Owings tripled in the fifth, and Rickie Weeks Jr. and Jean Segura had doubles when the Diamondbacks bunched five of their 12 hits to break a 3-3 tie.

Phillies 6, Padres 5
SAN DIEGO -- Philadelphia scored five runs on two-out hits and stopped a seventh-inning rally with a triple play to defeat San Diego in the rubber match of a three-game series at Petco Park.
Pinch hitter Tommy Joseph drove home Carlos Hernandez with an unearned run in the top of the eighth to break a 5-5 tie. Hernandez reached on a two-base throwing error by rookie Padres shortstop Jose Rondon and scored on Joseph's two-out single to left off left-handed reliever Brad Hand.
Phillies starter Jerad Eickhoff gave up five runs, four earned, in six innings. He yielded five hits, including two homers into the short porch down the right field line, and struck out five without issuing a walk. Closer Jeanmar Gomez picked up his 29th save and his second of the series.

Dodgers 8, Red Sox 5
LOS ANGELES -- Rookie Rob Segedin had four RBIs in his major league debut, sparking Los Angeles over Boston at Dodger Stadium.
Justin Turner homered and Adrian Gonzalez and Enrique Hernandez hit back-to-back long balls in the seventh for the Dodgers, who took two of three from the Red Sox. Gonzalez's solo shot off reliever Junichi Tazawa was the 300th of his career.
The Red Sox's Aaron Hill, Andrew Benintendi, who finished with two RBIs, and Mookie Betts each drove in a run in the sixth to cut the Dodgers' margin to 6-5, but reliever Joe Blanton fanned Jackie Bradley Jr. looking to end the inning. Red Sox starter David Price served up six runs (three earned) on five hits with five walks and three strikeouts.

Preview: Rays (45-65) at Blue Jays (63-49)

Game: 1
Venue: Rogers Centre
Date: August 08, 2016 7:07 PM EDT

TORONTO -- The Toronto Blue Jays hope a return home will revive their sputtering offense.

It might not be easy, however, against the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday.

Tampa Bay will send out Jake Odorizzi in the opener of the three-game series at Rogers Centre.

The right-hander has matched the club record with three consecutive scoreless starts. He has not allowed a run in 20 2/3 innings, one-third of a frame short of the team's season-best string set by Alex Colome.

"It's nice to have the results to go with the stuff," Odorizzi said. "From a confidence standpoint, when pitchers have good stuff, see good results, the confidence goes through the roof."

The Blue Jays are returning from a 4-3 road trip against the Houston Astros and the Kansas City Royals.

They returned from a winning trip without much hitting. After the Royals took the rubber match of the three-game series 7-1 on Sunday, the Blue Jays were outscored 19-17 over the seven games and batted .138 with runners in scoring position.

They have failed to score more than four runs in a game since July 30 when they plated nine against the Baltimore Orioles, who beat the Chicago White Sox 10-2 Sunday to take a one-game lead over the Blue Jays (63-49) in the American League East.

"Today was a little bit frustrating," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said after his team hit just six singles. "We really haven't been swinging it good since that last homestand. We've been kind of in a little rut, so we're due to explode.

"There are 162 games, it's baseball and it's hard to be hot for 162," said Marcus Stroman, who allowed three runs in five innings to take the loss Sunday. "Our guys are some of the best hitters in the league, we're aware of that, and the drought is not going to last. It's just one of those spurts and I'm sure they'll break out soon."

The Rays lost 6-3 Sunday to the Minnesota Twins to complete a 6-4 homestand that included a three-game sweep of the New York Yankees.

They are 11-11 since the All -Star break but at 45-65 overall are well removed from postseason contention. They have been pitching well, however, and have allowed three runs or fewer in 11 of their past 13 games.

The Rays are undergoing a rebuilding process and before the deadline for trades without waivers last Monday, they traded left-hander Matt Moore, outfielder Brandon Guyer and utility player Steve Pearce.

Third baseman Evan Longoria, who is accustomed to playing on Tampa Bay team that contended and reached the World Series in 2008, longs to return to a contender's status.

"I'm ready to win," Longoria told the Tampa Times. "I hate sitting around watching all my friends go out and do that. I do believe we can be a contender here again. It takes a lot. It takes a lot. And we have to believe that from the top down.

"... Personally you get spoiled going to the playoffs so often (four times in six years) and just expecting that it is going to happen again. ... I want to go back. And I want us to do everything possible to give ourselves the best chance to do that."

Odorizzi (6-5, 3.70 ERA), who will face knuckleballer R.A. Dickey (8-12, 4.49 ERA) on Monday, allowed two hits and two walks over six innings Wednesday in a 12-0 win against Kansas City.

He is 3-2 with a 3.33 ERA in nine career starts against the Blue Jays, In three starts against them this season, Odorizzi is 1-0 with a 2.04 ERA. He has made five career starts at Rogers Centre, going 2-2 with a 5.27 ERA.

Dickey is 1-1 with a 5.73 ERA two starts against the Rays this season. In his career, he is 8-9 with a 4.33 ERA against Tampa Bay in 24 games, including 20 starts.

The Rogers Centre has not been kind to Dickey this season. He is 2-8 with a 5.40 ERA this season and has allowed 15 of his 26 homers there this season.

The last time the teams met, the Rays swept a three-game series at Rogers Centre May 16-18 and scored 31 runs, a club record for a three-game series.

Preview: Giants (63-48) at Marlins (59-52)

Game: 1
Venue: Marlins Park
Date: August 08, 2016 7:10 PM EDT

MIAMI -- Now that Ichiro Suzuki reached his milestone -- he banged out hit No. 3,000 on Sunday in Miami's 10-7 win over the Colorado Rockies -- the Marlins and their fans can more fully focus on the race for a wild-card playoff berth.

The Marlins, who went 2-4 on their just completed road trip, play host to the National League West-leading San Francisco Giants (63-48) on Monday night in the start of a three-game series.

Miami (59-52) leads the St. Louis Cardinals by one game and the New York Mets by two in the battle for the second and final NL wild card.

The Marlins have to like their chances to win Monday's opener as All-Star right-hander Jose Fernandez takes the mound in a stadium where he rarely loses. He is 26-2 with a 1.62 ERA at Marlins Park, making him one of the best home-field pitchers in the history of the game.

San Francisco, however, also feels pretty good about its starting pitcher, All-Star right-hander Johnny Cueto, who is 8-2 with a 2.82 ERA and a 1.12 walks-plus-hits-per-inning-pitched ratio on the road this season.

Overall this season, Cueto is 13-3 with a 2.73 ERA. This is the 30-year-old's sixth season with double-figure wins, capped by his 20-9 record in 2014 and his 19-9 mark in 2012.

He accomplished those records with his original team, the Cincinnati Reds, but he has been a bit of nomad since he was traded in midseason 2015, winning a World Series last year with the Kansas City Royals and then signing a six-year, $130 million deal with the Giants in December.

The Giants won 16 of Cueto's first 18 starts this season, but San Francisco has since lost three of four.

Fernandez has yet to cash in on a Cueto-like contract. Even so, as long as Fernandez stays healthy, he soon will hit the lottery because his pitching prowess is unquestioned.

Still, the 24-year-old is in a mini-slump, having lost two games in a row for the first time since his rookie year of 2013.

Fernandez is 12-6 with a 2.87 ERA this year. His 192 strikeouts are already a career high, five more than he had in 2013.

In his only start against the Giants this year, Fernandez allowed four runs on seven hits in six innings during a 7-2 loss at San Francisco on April 23. His only other appearance vs. San Francisco was six-inning, three-run win last year.

"There's no rhyme or reason why guys you think you should have success off shut you down, and the elite pitchers, you have success against," Giants manager Bruce Bochy told the San Francisco Chronicle. "I wish I could explain it, but I can't. Part of it is, when you face them, are they on top of their game or not? That has something to do with it, too."

With Fernandez and Cueto pitching, expect a close battle on Monday, especially since the Giants and Marlins have played 13 times at Marlins Park, and 10 of those games were decided by two runs or fewer.

The Giants played a close game on Sunday, allowing only two hits but somehow managing to lose 1-0 to the Washington Nationals.

San Francisco wasted a great effort from Madison Bumgarner, who pitched his fourth complete game of the year.

The game had added meaning because the win gave the Nationals the season series, 4-3. If the teams finish with identical records and meet in the playoffs as division champs, the Nationals would get home-field advantage.

As for Suzuki, he became just the 30th major league player to reach 3,000 hits, and he joined Paul Molitor as the only ones to reach the milestone with a triple.

Suzuki was also the third player to reach 3,000 at age 42 or older, and he has the respect of virtually everyone in baseball.

"Being with (Suzuki) the past couple of years is so awesome," Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton said in a TV interview following Sunday's game. "For him to get it like that (a triple off the wall in right field) -- that was cool, too. We were all yelling, 'Get over! Get over!'

"We were able to hug him on the field, and that was cool."

Suzuki, speaking through a translator in a press conference after the game, was quite funny when asked about the pressure he felt starting the game 0-for-3.

"My body felt like Justin Bour's -- just so heavy," he said, referencing Miami's hefty first baseman. "But after that hit, the burden was lifted off."

Now that the chase is over, though, the Marlins have to get back to business. Third baseman Martin Prado left Sunday's game after fouling a pitch off his foot, and that is an injury to a team leader that could be crucial.

Preview: Braves (41-70) at Brewers (49-60)

Game: 1
Venue: Miller Park
Date: August 08, 2016 7:20 PM EDT

MILWAUKEE -- Despite the pampered lifestyle of a major league baseball player -- chartered planes, first-class hotels -- road trips can be a drain, especially when flying from one side of the country to another.

But while all ballplayers are anxious to get back home after a long road trip, there are few MLB players who enjoy playing in their own ballpark more than Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis.

Nieuwenhuis is batting just .212 on the season and depending on how you look at it, that number could be a lot better or astonishingly worse when one takes a look at Nieuwenhuis' home/road splits.

On the road, Nieuwenhuis is batting a paltry .143 (16-for-130) with a home run, seven doubles and 10 RBIs. But back at Miller Park, Nieuwenhuis has been a machine, posting a .304 average (38-for-125) with nine doubles, nine home runs, a triple and 24 RBIs.

"It's pretty impressive, the numbers at home," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. "They're mind-boggling, really, the differences. It's a hard one to explain, and I'm not going to be able to explain it."

Nieuwenhuis went 3-for-18 on Milwaukee's recent road trip, appearing in five of six games against the Padres and Diamondbacks.

"I've just tried to change my mentality a little bit," Nieuwenhuis said. "I've just been pressing a lot the last three or four weeks.

"I've tried to take it one pitch at a time and see where that takes me."

Nobody would appreciate an offensive outburst more than right-hander Zach Davies, who takes the mound Monday looking for his fourth consecutive start in fifth in his last five decisions.

Davies hasn't allowed more than two earned runs in any of his last five outings, posting a 1.97 ERA with 21 strikeouts and six walks in 32 innings during that stretch.

"When he gets into a groove, he runs through a lineup pretty good," Counsell said.

He'll be facing the Braves for the first time in his career.

Atlanta's scheduled starter, rookie right-hander Rob Whalen, will go for his first career victory. He made his major league debut Aug. 3, allowing four runs on four hits -- including a home run -- and four walks with five strikeouts over five innings of work, but didn't take a decision in Atlanta's 8-4 victory over the Pirates.

He allowed all four runs in the first inning, but settled in quickly after that.

"Obviously the game didn't start how either of us hoped it would, but the end result was exactly what we were looking for," said Braves catcher Anthony Recker. "He did a great job getting through that first inning and then just bearing down and making pitches after that.

"I just told him we were still behind him and we were going to come back and win the game, just keep pitching your butt off and we got ya. And he did that."

Whalen was having a strong year in Atlanta's minor league system, going a combined 7-6 with a 2.40 ERA for Double-A Mississippi and Triple-A Gwinnett, where he made three starts and allowed just four runs in 18 2/3 innings of work while striking out 18.

Preview: Astros (57-54) at Twins (45-66)

Game: 1
Venue: Target Field
Date: August 08, 2016 8:10 PM EDT

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Twins will try to build on one of their most productive road trips of the season when they open a four-game series against the Houston Astros at Target Field on Monday night.

In that attempt, the Twins will also get back third baseman Trevor Plouffe, who has missed the last month with a fractured rib.

The Twins went 5-2 on a seven-game trip that began with three wins in a four-game series against Central Division-leading Cleveland last week at Progressive Field. Minnesota also won two of three over Tampa Bay over the weekend, capped by third baseman Miguel Sano's two homer afternoon in a 6-3 win on Sunday.

While Sano was able to get going against the Rays, Twins skipper Paul Molitor will be forced to shuffle his lineup around with the return of Plouffe, a third baseman who has also seen time at first base this season.

Plouffe's 2016 campaign has been a disappointment thus far; the slugger has just seven homers after hitting 22 last year and has a career low .283 on-base percentage. But he was swinging well in 12 games before the injury, hitting .326 with a pair of homers and seven RBIs over the final two weeks of June. He also hit .316 with a homer and two RBIs in five rehabilitation games with Triple-A Rochester before being activated following the win in Tampa on Sunday.

To make room for Plouffe, the Twins sent down struggling center fielder Byron Buxton, who entered the season as one of the top prospects in all of baseball.

After an underwhelming first taste of big-league action last season, Buxton hasn't fared much better this time around, hitting just .193 with 80 strikeouts in 197 at-bats in 2016.

"All I can tell you is that I like having people like Byron around here," Molitor said. "He's got to go down there and work on some physical things, mechanical things, and hopefully get a little confidence back."

The Astros come to town off a 5-3 loss to Texas in Houston on Sunday, a game that saw the Astros rally from three runs down late before allowing a pair of runs in the top of the 11th inning.

Texas won two of three against Houston over the weekend, helping the Rangers increase their lead to 7 1/2 games over the Astros for first place in the American League West. The Seattle Mariners, who have won three-straight games, also moved ahead of Houston for second place in the division.

"Any time I leave this podium after a loss, I hate it," Astros manager A.J. Hinch said, according to MLB.com. "I don't care what team is on the other side. I don't care what division they're in, what league they're in, how the loss happened. ... I'm not naive. I know that those games (against the Rangers) are going to be magnified ... but if we had lost to an unnamed team not named the Rangers, I would be just as disappointed."

Houston native Tyler Duffey will take the mound for Minnesota in game one of the series. Duffey, who attended Bellaire High School and pitched for Rice University, has given up at least five runs in each of his last three starts and could pitch his way out of the rotation with another clunker on Monday.

Duffey, a righty, allowed two runs on six hits and a walk in 6 2/3 innings in a no decision last season in Houston in his only career start against his hometown team.

Collin McHugh will go for the Astros, coming off a quality start against Toronto in which he allowed three runs in six innings of work. The right-hander allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings against the Twins at Minute Maid Park on May 3 but earned the win victory.

Preview: Reds (45-65) at Cardinals (58-53)

Game: 1
Venue: Busch Stadium
Date: August 08, 2016 8:15 PM EDT

ST. LOUIS -- Standing in front of his locker Sunday after the St. Louis Cardinals lost another series to a last-place team, right fielder Brandon Moss wasn't about to slap a Chuck Tanner happy face on this one.

"We go through our ups and we go through our downs, and we are consistently inconsistent," he said. "That's all there is to it."

Moss and his teammates will continue the season-long search for consistency Monday night when they welcome the Cincinnati Reds to Busch Stadium for a three-game series.

At 58-53, St. Louis remains among the contenders for a National League wild-card spot, even though it trails Miami for the second wild-card spot by a half-game, pending the outcome of the Marlins' game in Colorado.

But there's no denying that the Cardinals have mostly missed a prime chance to bank some wins in the last week. In the first six games of a nine-game stretch against Cincinnati and Atlanta, two of the NL's three last-place teams, St. Louis went 2-4.

Poor starting pitching has been a problem. The Cardinals got just one quality start in those six games -- Jaime Garcia's eight shutout innings on Friday night against the Braves -- and have had to run through their bullpen consistently.

St. Louis' series loss at Atlanta's hands continued a season-long trend of failing to win at home, where it is a shocking 26-32.

"I feel like every month is the month to watch out for things," Moss said. "We have a good team. We still have two months left, so to be honest, a lot of things work themselves out in the last week of the season."

The Reds' fate is already worked out. At 45-65, they will miss the playoffs for the third straight year and are looking toward 2017 and beyond, having dealt NL RBI leader Jay Bruce to the New York Mets.

But Cincinnati at least deserves credit for not mailing in the first 3 1/2 weeks after the All-Star break. It won six straight series before dropping two of three in Pittsburgh during the weekend, although it salvaged a 7-3 win Sunday.

"These guys have not turned their backs on the fact that we expect to go out there and play hard and win games," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "It's a tribute to the guys in the clubhouse."

Monday night's pitching matchup is a repeat of the Cardinals' 5-4 win over Cincinnati on Wednesday night in the Great American Ball Park.

St. Louis' Michael Wacha (7-7, 4.35) is 6-1 with a 1.97 ERA in 12 career games against the Reds. Only Texas pitcher Cole Hamels' 1.93 ERA against Cincinnati is lower among active pitchers than Wacha's.

Cincinnati counters with rookie left-hander Cody Reed (0-6, 7.30), who was touched for five runs in five innings by the Cardinals. Reed, who hacked up four first-inning runs, has permitted 13 runs in the first inning of his eight starts.

Tuesday night's game will pit former Red Mike Leake (8-9, 4.80) against Brandon Finnegan (7-8, 4.65), and Garcia (8-8, 4.04) opposes Anthony DeSclafani (6-0, 2.94) in Wednesday night's series finale.

Preview: Rangers (65-47) at Rockies (55-56)

Game: 1
Venue: Coors Field
Date: August 08, 2016 8:40 PM EDT

DENVER -- The Colorado Rockies will finish an eight-game homestand and complete their home portion of interleague play with two games against the Texas Rangers, starting Monday.

The clubs will play two games in Texas on Wednesday and Thursday.

The Rockies are 8-8 against American League teams this season and 4-4 at Coors Field. The Rangers are 7-4 against clubs from the National League and 4-2 on the road.

The Rockies won two of three from the Rangers at Coors Field in 2015 and are 10-6 against them at Coors Field. Colorado leads the all-time series 15-14.

The first-place Rangers, who hold a seven-game lead over the second-place Seattle Mariners in the AL West, are 31-30 on the road and 34-17 at home. At 65-47, the Rangers have the best record in the AL and have won seven of their past 10 games and 10 of their past 15.

They are 3-3 on an eight-game, three-time-zone trip that ends in Colorado after stops in Baltimore (1-2) and Houston (2-1).

Left-hander Cole Hamels, who is 12-3 with a 2.89 ERA in 22 starts, will take the mound Monday. He has the lowest road ERA in the AL, 1.90 ERA, and he has an 8-2 record away from Arlington.

Hamels is 4-4 with a 3.21 ERA in 10 career starts against the Rockies, including 2-2 with a 3.94 ERA in five starts at Coors Field.

Carlos Beltran didn't play Sunday for the Rangers after leaving the Saturday night game with a bruised left quadriceps, an injury that occurred on a play at the plate. Beltran started that game in right field after being used as the designated hitter in four straight games after being acquired Aug. 1 from the New York Yankees.

Rangers manager Jeff Banister said he planned to play Beltran in the outfield in at least one of the two games at Coors Field and would see how the veteran feels Monday. However, with no DH in an NL park, the Rangers can rest Beltran for two games until the teams play in Texas on Wednesday. Beltran would give the Rangers a potent bat off the bench at Coors Field, but he will try to be ready to play Monday.

"If I feel good, I'll let the manager know, and he'll decide," Beltran said. "My job is to be ready."

Left-hander Tyler Anderson, 4-3 with a 3.25 ERA in 10 career starts, will start Monday for the Rockies. He pitched a career-high seven innings in his last outing, earning a win by allowing just two runs on six hits against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday. Anderson's ERA is the lowest for a Rockies starter through 10 starts in franchise history.

He is 4-1 with a 3.32 ERA in seven starts at Coors Field, where he has won each of his past four starts.

The Rockies (55-56) have split the first six games of their homestand, winning two of three from the Dodgers and then dropping two of three to the Marlins. Miami earned a 10-7 win Sunday that was spiced with a seventh-inning triple by Ichiro Suzuki, his 3,000th hit in the major leagues.

The Rockies, who are 28-27 at home, are four games behind the Marlins for the second NL wild card. The St. Louis Cardinals, New York Mets and Pittsburgh Pirates also are ahead of the Rockies in the wild-card scramble.

"There's so many games left, I think 50 or more," Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado said after Sunday's loss. "There's a lot of games left. There's a lot of room to get better, but you got to move on.

"I think when you're in these (kind of) races, you got to move on quick. Tomorrow we got the Rangers coming to town, and we got to be ready for that. But if we keep the mindset and keep playing the way we're playing and what we're doing, I think we're going to be all right."

OAKLAND, Calif. -- You can call right-hander Kendall Graveman the Oakland A's last starting pitcher standing or, as manager Bob Melvin did Sunday, the Lone Ranger.

Graveman will make his team-high 22nd start of the season Monday against Baltimore, which is only fitting for the only member of the team's original rotation who has avoided a trip to the disabled list.

"He's been great and consistent for us, healthy, has a great work ethic," Melvin said before Sunday's 3-1 loss to the Cubs. "So it's nice to have at least one guy in the rotation that started the year."

A's right-hander Sonny Gray (strained right forearm) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday for the second time this season. He had an earlier DL stint with a strained right trapezius. Left-hander Rich Hill had two trips to the DL before being traded to the Dodgers. Chris Bassitt had season-ending Tommy John surgery, as did Felix Doubront, who was slated to be the fifth starter before being injured in the final exhibition game.

The A's current DL includes starting pitchers Jesse Hahn (strained right shoulder) and Henderson Alvarez, who has had two setbacks this year as he tries to come back from right shoulder surgery he had in July 2015. Right-hander Jarrod Parker is also on the DL. He had Tommy John surgery in March of 2014 and surgery for a fractured bone in his elbow in May of 2015.

"I've been fortunate," Graveman said. "Something I've never had to deal with is arm issues. Even in college. I take pride in being able to go out every day, every time it's my turn to go. It's tough to watch a lot of friends, a lot of teammates go through injuries."

Graveman (7-7) has set a career high for wins and will set a career high for starts on Monday. Graveman went 6-0, setting a career high for consecutive wins, with a 3.25 ERA, 34 strikeouts and 14 walks over 10 outings before struggling his past two starts.

Graveman allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits over 6 1/3 innings in a 5-3 loss to Cleveland on July 29. Then he gave up six runs over four innings and got a no-decision in an 8-6 loss to the Angels on Wednesday.

"Last week I thought I got out of the delivery that I'd been repeating for six, seven even eight weeks," Graveman said, "Just to get back to it in my bullpen this week was a positive. To be able to turn that leaf and say, 'Hey, I'm going to go back and not try to overthrow the baseball and get back to the regular sink in the bullpen and carry that over to the next game.' It's exciting. We've got another good team, another good hitting lineup coming in in Baltimore."

"You just got to continue to make pitches and you got to believe, as the old saying goes, that sometimes good pitches beat good hitters."

The A's were swept three games by the Cubs, who have the major-league's best record at 69-41, and fell a season-high 15 games under .500 (48-63).

The Orioles are 63-47 after a 10-2 victory Sunday against the White Sox. They lead the American League East by one game over Toronto.

The Orioles had five home runs Sunday, including three by third baseman Manny Machado, who became the second player in major league history to homer in the first, second and third innings of a game. He had a career-high seven RBIs.

"I've been trying to find my swing," Machado said. "This whole series, I've been squaring up some balls, which is fun, and today they finally went out of the park."

Right-hander Kevin Gausman will make his 20th start of the season for Baltimore. After a rough start against Toronto, he bounced back Wednesday in a 3-2 win against Texas. He allowed two runs on seven hits over seven innings, striking out seven and walking one.
