GAME: Milwaukee Brewers (59-54) at Minnesota Twins (53-56)

WHERE: Target Field, Minneapolis, Minnesota

Preview: Brewers at Twins

Gracenote

Aug 6, 2017

The Milwaukee Brewers make another attempt at taking over first place in the National League Central when they visit the Minnesota Twins on Monday for the opener of a four-game, home-and-home series. Milwaukee wasted an opportunity to leap past the Chicago Cubs on Sunday as it dropped a 2-1 decision in Tampa Bay to halt its winning streak at three games.

Orlando Arcia extended his hitting streak to five games by driving in the lone run with his second homer in three contests for the Brewers, who trail the Cubs by one-half game. Minnesota edged Texas 6-5 on Sunday to earn a split of their four-game set and sit 3 1/2 games behind Kansas City for the second wild-card spot in the American League. Eddie Rosario ended his nine-game drought by hitting one of three homers for the Twins, who are a disappointing 25-33 at home and trail first-place Cleveland by six games in the AL Central. Brian Dozier also went deep before exiting the win with an undisclosed illness but hopes to be in the lineup for the series opener.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee), FSN North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Brewers LH Brent Suter (2-2, 3.04 ERA) vs. Twins RH Ervin Santana (12-7, 3.28)

After making five straight solid starts, Suter was tagged for five runs and eight hits over 5 1/3 innings in a loss to St. Louis on Wednesday. The 27-year-old native of Illinois pitched well in his last three turns on the road, allowing five runs over 17 frames, but came away with three no-decisions. Suter will be facing Minnesota for the first time in his brief career.

Santana is coming off his major league-leading fifth complete game of the year, a triumph at San Diego on Wednesday in which he gave up two runs and four hits while registering a season-high nine strikeouts. The 34-year-old Dominican has lost each of his last two turns at home, even though one was a complete game against the Los Angeles Angels in which he yielded only two runs. Santana has struggled versus Milwaukee, going 0-2 with a 7.41 ERA in three career starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Dozier has reached the 20-homer plateau for the fourth straight season, becoming the ninth Twin to accomplish the feat and first since Justin Morneau did it in five consecutive years (2005-09).

2. Milwaukee OF Domingo Santana could miss the series opener after suffering a bruised right wrist when hit by a pitch on Sunday.

3. Minnesota 3B Miguel Sano remains day-to-day after being hit on the left hand by a pitch on Friday.

PREDICTION: Twins 5, Brewers 3

GAME: St. Louis Cardinals (55-56) at Kansas City Royals (57-53)

Preview: Cardinals at Royals

Gracenote

Aug 7, 2017

The stakes aren’t always high when the Kansas City Royals and St. Louis Cardinals play their annual interleague series. This year’s I-70 Series comes with plenty on the line, though, as both teams enter the four-game home-and-home series Monday at Kansas City with hopes of making a playoff push.

The Royals are in position for the second wild card and just 2 1/2 games behind first-place Cleveland in the American League Central after splitting a doubleheader with visiting Seattle on Sunday. Kansas City has won seven of its last nine games at home, where the first two contests of the series will be played. The Cardinals went 9-for-19 with runners in scoring position in Sunday’s 13-4 win at Cincinnati, giving them a series win. St. Louis is 3 1/2 games behind the first-place Chicago Cubs in the National League Central.

TV: 8:15 p.m. ET, FSN Midwest (St. Louis), FSN Kansas City

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Carlos Martinez (7-9, 3.59 ERA) vs. Royals RH Ian Kennedy (4-7, 4.60)

Martinez has allowed first-inning runs in six straight starts and owns a 6.55 ERA in the opening frame this season. The 25-year-old has a 5.82 ERA with just two quality starts over his last six outings, and gave up three runs in five innings of a loss at Milwaukee last time out. Martinez has made one start and one relief appearance against the Royals and did not allow a run in eight innings combined.

Kennedy had a solid month of July, but his first start in August was a rough one. The 32-year-old gave up four runs and eight hits over four-plus innings in a loss at Baltimore on Tuesday, suffering his first defeat since June 5. Kennedy is 3-5 with a 7.20 ERA in eight starts against the Cardinals, most recently in 2015.

WALK-OFFS

1. St. Louis CF Dexter Fowler is on the disabled list with a wrist injury but could be activated at some point during the series.

2. The Royals placed C Salvador Perez on the disabled list with a right intercostal strain suffered Friday and could be without the All-Star backstop for up to four weeks.

3. Cardinals OF Tommy Pham, who is 4-for-6 with a homer against Kennedy, is 8-for-24 during a six-game hitting streak.

Gracenote

Aug 7, 2017

The Baltimore Orioles completed a 5-2 homestand with a pair of victories and look to continue their winning ways when they begin a 10-game West Coast trip on Monday with the first of three contests against the Los Angeles Angels. Baltimore posted a 12-3 win over Detroit on Sunday to earn a split of their four-game set and remain 2 1/2 games behind Kansas City for the second wild card in the American League.

The Orioles launched five homers in the victory, including three in a row during a four-run first inning. Manny Machado belted his 20th of the year among four hits and collected a season-high five RBIs while Joey Rickard went 4-for-4 with a solo blast as Baltimore won for the seventh time in nine overall contests. Los Angeles fell three games behind the Royals after squandering a five-run lead and dropping an 11-10 decision to Oakland on Sunday. Mike Trout is riding a nine-game hitting streak after belting his third homer in five contests for the Angels, who are 4-2 on their nine-game homestand.

TV: 10:07 p.m. ET, MASN2 (Baltimore), FSN West (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Dylan Bundy (10-8, 4.24 ERA) vs. Angels RH JC Ramirez (10-9, 4.03)

Bundy vies for his career-high 11th victory after tossing a gem on Tuesday, when he allowed one unearned run and three hits in eight innings of a win over Kansas City. The 24-year-old Oklahoman is hoping that was the beginning of a turnaround after surrendering at least five runs in five of his previous seven turns. Bundy will be making his first start against Los Angeles after yielding four runs over 1 1/3 frames of relief in his only career appearance versus the Angels.

Ramirez also is coming off a masterpiece as he scattered six hits over eight scoreless innings in a triumph over Philadelphia on Wednesday. The 28-year-old Nicaraguan has won two straight at home but still owns a 3-5 record and 4.50 ERA in 12 appearances (11 starts) at Angel Stadium this season. Ramirez has faced Baltimore twice in relief during his career, allowing one run and three hits over 1 2/3 frames.

WALK-OFFS

1. Angels OF Cameron Maybin (knee) is expected to be activated from the disabled list on Monday after going 2-for-7 in two rehab games with Triple-A Salt Lake.

2. Baltimore DH Mark Trumbo (rib cage), who began his career with the Angels, could be activated from the DL in time for the series finale on Wednesday.

3. Los Angeles RHP Matt Shoemaker (forearm), who is 6-3 with a 4.52 ERA in 14 starts, has elected to undergo season-ending surgery.

Preview: Cubs at Giants

Gracenote

Aug 7, 2017

After playing spoiler to one playoff contender over the weekend, the San Francisco Giants welcome another postseason hopeful to town when they begin a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs on Monday. The Cubs hit the West Coast clinging to a half-game lead over Milwaukee in the National League Central after dropping four of their last five.

The Giants took two of three from NL wild card hopeful Arizona over the weekend, winning 6-3 in the rubber match Sunday behind Jarrett Parker’s first home run of the season. "We've been through a lot," Giants manager Bruce Bochy told reporters. "We're banged up. We brought in some young kids to get them some playing time, and yet we go out there and play some great baseball. With what we've been through, it is nice to take a series against a club that's having a very good year." San Francisco has won six of its last nine home games against the Cubs but is an NL-worst 25-31 at home this season. The Cubs have won 11 of their last 12 on the road.

TV: 10:08 p.m. ET, ESPN, WGN (Chicago), NBCSN Bay Area (San Francisco)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs RH Jake Arrieta (10-8, 3.88 ERA) vs. Giants LH Matt Moore (3-11, 5.80)

Arrieta took a tough-luck loss Wednesday against Arizona, but he posted his fourth straight quality start to begin the second half. The 31-year-old limited Arizona to two runs (one earned) over seven innings and struck out eight in a 3-0 defeat and has posted a 2.08 ERA over his last six starts. Arrieta is 4-2 with a 1.82 ERA in six starts against the Giants, including a 3-1 mark and 2.08 ERA in four outings at AT&T Park.

Moore is winless in seven starts since June 20, and he has posted only two quality starts over that stretch. The 28-year-old gave up four runs and six hits over five innings in a loss to Oakland on Wednesday, as he surrendered a home run for the fifth straight start. Moore faced the Cubs for the first time May 24 and allowed four runs (three earned) over six-plus innings to take the loss in a 5-4 defeat.

WALK-OFFS

1. Cubs C Willson Contreras belted two home runs Sunday and has 10 since the All-Star break, tied with Miami’s Giancarlo Stanton for the most in the NL.

2. Giants OF Hunter Pence is 11-for-32 with three homers and eight RBIs during an eight-game hitting streak.

3. Chicago RF Jason Heyward recorded his 1,000th career hit when he notched three in Sunday's contest.
