WNBA Betting Recap - 6/15-6/21
By Joe Williams

League Betting Notes (from Monday, June 15 through Sunday, June 21)

-- Underdogs went 8-7 straight up
-- Underdogs went 8-7 against the spread (ATS)
-- Road teams posted a 13-2 SU record
-- Road teams posted a 13-2 ATS record
-- The 'over' went 8-7

Team Betting Notes

-- It was all about the road team in WNBA this week, as only Atlanta (3-5) and Tulsa (6-1) defended their home courts successfully this week.

-- Speaking of the Shock, they posted a 3-0 week and have covered each of their seven games this season (7-0 ATS).

-- For the Dream, the home win was about the only thing positive this week. They went 1-2 SU/ATS, and slipped to 2-6 ATS through eight games this season. One of the only things consistent about the Dream is the 'under', going 5-2-1 through their first outings.

-- Phoenix (3-3) scratched out an impressive road win at Seattle (2-4), improving to 3-2-1 ATS. It was also their first straight-up win in three tries on the road, while they improved to 2-1 ATS away from the desert.

-- Minnesota (5-2) suffered a rare loss at home to the Shock Sunday, just their second setback in seven tries this season. Even more rare was an offer in Sunday's clash of the titans, as the 'under' had hit in five of six games for the Lynx until the over was smashed against the Shock.

-- Connecticut (6-1) continues to roll right along, wrapping up a west coast road trip this week by going 3-0 SU/ATS. Like the Shock, the Sun have covered each of their seven games this season (7-0 ATS). They have a rematch with Los Angeles (0-4) at home on Friday.

-- Indiana (3-5) was a little better this week, going 2-1 SU/ATS, with their only setback against a good Washington (4-2) squad. The Fever have been involved in many high-scoring games, with the 'over' going 6-2.

WNBA ref counts basket that didn't go in
Andrew Caley

For those who wager on WNBA games something fishy went down in Friday night's game between Chicago and Atlanta, as one of the officials counted a basket that didn't go in the hoop.

Chicago's Elena Delle Donne was fouled on a shot late in the fourth quarter. The ball didn't go in. Not even close. But the referees counted the basket and Delle Donne took just one free throw, which she made. It made the score 72-71 Atlanta.

The worst part is the officials reviewed the play and still counted the basket.

Luckily for Atlanta backers they still managed to cover as 3.5-point home dogs, winning the game 74-73, but still it makes you think.

CONSORTIUM CHOICES

Chatsworth Consortium

# 1 ROAD SENSE 7/2

# 3 WESKEY 2/1

# 6 NEXT TO GO 7/1

Hard not to love ROAD SENSE as the top selection for this race. Take a look at this solid standardbred's avg speed figure of 80 and compare to today's class rating. Looks like a really strong wager. Comes into this race with formidable TrackMaster class figures relative to the pack - take a good look. Well above average winning statistic makes this horse an excellent pick to take home the dough. WESKEY - The group keenly points out that when Shepherd trains this standardbred, the odds of finishing in the money go way up. Racing competitively, recorded a very promising speed rating in his most recent race (81). NEXT TO GO - Seems to have a competitive class edge based on the entrants he has faced. Take a long look at making this horse your win wager based on well above average win pct alone.

# 6 ONE AND ONLY 2/1

# 2 COLONIAL ROAD 7/2

# 1 P L FIGHTER 3/1

ONE AND ONLY will have you running to the cashier's window for this race. He's racing in good form, recording very promising TrackMaster speed figs. An excellent selection. Enters this race with respectable TrackMaster class statistics relative to the race - take a good look. Many top players will recognize the terrific TrackMaster SR in the last race. Stacks up against any horse in this bunch. COLONIAL ROAD - Certainly should be given a look based on the very nice TrackMaster Speed Rating achieved in the last contest. With this driver-handler hooking up, investors often make money. ROI is very good with this partnership. P L FIGHTER - Feel the need for speed, this fine animal has been turning in some fantastic TrackMaster speed figs averaging around 87. This interesting entrant looks very good considering the high class figures. We wouldn't recommend tossing out of any exotics.

Race 9 - Maiden Claiming - 8.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $15000 Class Rating: 60

FOR MAIDENS, FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 119 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $10,000.

RECOMMENDED CHOICES

The Walker Group Picks

# 3 FLYING DISCREET 5/1

# 8 FEISTY 2/1

# 5 SWEETPUDDIN 6/1

FLYING DISCREET has a respectable shot to take this race. Seems to have a formidable class edge based on the latest company kept. I like the rider on this filly - competitive chance to win the contest. FEISTY - Conditioner has strong win rate (24 percent) at this distance and surface. With a very good 53 Equibase Speed Figure last time out, will definitely be a factor in this contest.

QUARTER HORSE 400Y, FOR MAIDENS, THREE, FOUR, AND FIVE YEARS OLD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 121 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS.

RECOMMENDED CHOICES

The Walker Group Picks

# 4 SOUTHERN SISTERS 15/1

# 7 ONE FAMOUS MOON 12/1

# 2 JESS KID ROCK 3/2

I've got to go with SOUTHERN SISTERS especially at a long price. Expect a strong outing with the class drop. Could best this group of animals based on the speed fig - 71 - of his last outing. Has run admirably when racing a short race. ONE FAMOUS MOON - Ramos should be able to get this filly to break out early in this contest. Ran a very solid last race. JESS KID ROCK - Likely to see a much stronger effort with the drop. Have to examine solely on class, with some of the best class figs of this group.

Mountaineer - Race #4 - Post: 8:06pm - Claiming - 5.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $6,600 Class Rating: 83

Rating: Golden DollarGolden DollarGolden DollarGolden Dollar

#7 EMINENT TALE (ML=6/1)
#1 LADBROOK (ML=9/2)

EMINENT TALE - After the contest aboard this animal on June 3rd, the jockey is going to be in tune with the gelding much better. Paucar and Clouston perform well when they combine forces. Tough to beat a winning percentage of 36. He has the topmost earnings per start (EPS). Check out this horse. This thoroughbred coming off a sharp try in the last month is a contender in my book. LADBROOK - Look at this gelding's PP lines. With each affair he keeps getting closer. I like that last effort on June 2nd at Mountaineer where he finished second. Recent speed ratings show dominant pattern of improvement.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 DOPPLER RADAR (ML=6/5), #2 I'D MARRY ME (ML=5/1), #3 SCOTCHNWATER (ML=6/1),

DOPPLER RADAR - Should have at least hit the board in the last 60 days in a sprint clash to be worth a shot at short odds in a sprint. He's in all probability going to get cooked at the front. I'D MARRY ME - Last performed on November 25th at Mountaineer, finishing seventh. Not likely to advance off of that try in today's race. SCOTCHNWATER - Tough to put any money on this gelding on the win end. Likes to land in the top three though. Pedestrian speed fig last time out at Mountaineer at 6 furlongs. Don't think this racer will improve too much in today's event.

#6 CAMP ZIPPY (ML=8/1)
#5 SHARP DANCER (ML=10/1)

CAMP ZIPPY - This gelding has been posting some excellent workout times. This horse coming off a good effort in the last month is a solid contender in my opinion. Have to like the way Richards has raced this gelding back into shape off the layoff. Horse is well spotted in this sprint and I think he'll run well today. This gelding garnered a good rating of 69 in his last affair. That speed fig should be good enough to win this time. SHARP DANCER - When Colon and Radosevich partner up on horses the return on investment has been great at +113. This horse should be in tip-top shape, this far into his form cycle.

Vulnerable Contenders: #8 HOTEL MIKE (ML=7/2), #2 KEY LOW (ML=9/2), #2B PURE WARRIOR (ML=9/2),

HOTEL MIKE - Doesn't look inspiring to me after the lack of any kind of closing ability on June 5th. Unlikely for this one to make an impact with no success lately in a short distance race. KEY LOW - This gelding finished out of the money on May 16th and wasn't close last out either. The Brain always tells me to keep away from thoroughbreds in sprint contests that haven't hit the board in short distance events of late. The speed figure last time around the track doesn't fit very well in this race when I look at the Equibase class figure of today's race. Mark this entrant as a likely underlay. PURE WARRIOR - Doubtful for this thoroughbred to make an impact with no recent good showings in a short distance event.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - CAMP ZIPPY - Steady improvement in his speed ratings, 69 last race and 52 two races back. This thoroughbred is going to be tough against these horses.

Mohawk: Monday 6/22 Analysis
By Garnet Barnsdale

Race 4 - $50,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

EARLY PICK 4:

3,5/7,8,9/2,4,6/1 = $18

LATE PICK 4: 1/7,10/2,5,6/1,3,4,5,9 = $30

MEET STATS: 125 - 398 / $732.80 BEST BETS: 16 - 35 / $54.80

SPOT PLAYS: 5 - 33 / $45.60

Best Bet: ALONEINSPADES (7th)

Spot Play: COLORATURA (5th)

Race 1

(2) CINCINATTI MISS wired a NW1L group Thursday night in good time and should be tough in this Grassroots dash - if she does indeed go on three day's rest. (6) JUDY THE BEAUTY faced a tough one in her last two and should be a strong contender vs. this mostly weaker field. (3) MASS RAIL was beat by a filly that came back Thursday night to record a 1:53 3/5 life's best in an O.S.S. Gold event. She fits vs. these.

Race 2

(4) FLEXCEPTIONAL has been facing some decent company in the NW2L class and now gets some post relief for this Grassroots dash. Jamieson should be sending this one early here. (5) RENEGADE MAGIC has only stayed trotting once in three tries, but on that occasion won well from the 10-hole; contender if flat. (3) LADYONE was nailed late by one that is unbeaten in 2015 and came back to win an OSS Gold dash in quick time. She is dangerous from close range.

Race 3

(6) BIG TIME ROCKS was the only one closing in a wildly fast mile for the class last week. He can take this group of mostly underachievers with a reasonable trip. (7) AMBLE OVER HANOVER's drop in class is bigger than it looks on paper because he has simply been facing much better stock in $25K claimers. He would be no surprise here. (1) BEACH HERO got exhausted chasing a winner that never slowed down at any point. He should sit a good trip here.

Race 4

(3) BODY BALANCE takes a big class drop here and should be tough to beat. (5) BOUNCING BAX tried her luck in the Armbro Flight and was well beaten but this class should be much easier. Using in the early pick 4. (4) EXTRACURRICULAR made two moves to record a solid win vs. easier but may find the top two tough to deal with here.

Race 5

(7) COLORATURA showed some decent late speed for the first time last Tuesday and it wouldn't take much more than a reasonable trip to topple this group. (9) MAGIC DANCING already has 8 wins this year and is surely sent early by Henry here; for as far as she goes. (8) BRINKERS DREAM is another that will be looking to blast off the gate and may get a good trip if MacDonell chooses to land her in Magic Dancing's pocket early.

Race 6

(2) RAILEE PRITI stayed in last week and finished mid-pack as a result. Driver Byron should be more aggressive here in this Grassroots dash. (6) LA BELLA ROSA converted a good trip into an easy win a week ago and figures to get a good trip up near the pace here. (4) OH MY MAGIC has been closing late for minor shares and likely repeats that pattern here.

Race 7

(1) ALONEINSPADES went a big trip uncovered for the second half and drove away to a new life's mark last time; call to repeat off that effort. (6) CORSICA HALL has come back much faster than last year and is a threat - although missing 3 weeks action is a bit worrisome. (5) ABSOLUTLY OFFICIAL chased a quick winner and raced only evenly. He would need to find more speed to beat the choice.

Race 8

(7) LADY PING is only a one-time winner in 15 starts but has been racing well lately and faces easier here; lukewarm top call. (10) WHOSGOINGTOCATCHUS has shown the speed to contend with this weak group and Jamieson is sure to blast this one off the gate. (3) TATTLE TALE HALL showed great improvement last time out at Georgian and may be starting to put things together now.

Race 9

(5) COCO LINDY ships in with a 3-race win streak in his pocket and looks good vs. this group. (2) ETRUSCAN HANOVER set an insane pace then stopped in the top class last out now drops to face easier. He looks very good on paper but is an erratic sort. (6) WINDSUN REVENGE has been racing well for several weeks and is a threat here too.

Race 10

(9) MUSCLE KIT shipped in and was a very good first-over winner last week. Waples should be able to get a good spot early and launch a similar assault here. (5) HAPPY HOLIDAYS wired her field in good time for this group and will be looking to do the same here. (3) I LOVE BLUE hasn't missed the board racing on the B tracks but will need to drop at least a couple of seconds here to threaten the top two. (4) TYRONE ZOEY gets post relief and should share here. (1) JLS TOO HOT TAJ is a good one for lower rungs of the exotics.

Yonkers: Monday 6/22 Analysis
By Matt Rose

Race 7 - $10,000 Guaranteed Pick Five Pool

MEET STATS: 176 - 549 / $953.60 BEST BETS: 25 - 44 / $87.90

Best Bet: DALLENBACH HANOVER (10th)

Spot Play: VICTORIA’S MUNKY (1st)

Race 1

(4) VICTORIA'S MUNKY switches to one of the leading drivers at the track and must be played off that angle. (1) NATY gets needed post relief and gets Sears in the bike. (3) DELIGHTFUL PLAN raced evenly in her two local appearances and she could hit the ticket in this weak field.

Race 2

(6) ONE AND ONLY ships in for Sabot, keeps Bartlett in the bike and does have some back class to call upon. (2) COLONIAL ROAD was a bit better last out and has the live Scott Zeron driving. (5) COLD BATH returns to Yonkers at a reduced level and he's capable on his best day.

Race 3

(4) BLADE SEELSTER was a bit better last out after a long dry spell and when right he's as good or better than these. (5) REPORT FOR DUTY N has found a home at this reduced level and he debuts for new connections tonight. (1) CRIMSON CRUISER bumps up a notch off a good return effort.

Race 4

(4) RAGE N RYAN was used in the early stages last week and tired late; he goes for Garcia-Herrera now via claim and should be heading to the front. (1) TRIGGER FINGER reappears at Yonkers and I recall him being competitive with better. (2) V I P BAYAMA gets needed post relief for Lachance.

Race 5

(2) STEUBEN PATRIOT returns locally for Team Stalbaum off a nice freshener at Monticello and he draws inside his main competition. (3) IDEAL WILLIE has been second best in his last four, recently burning money. Still a threat for the top spot, however. (5) KEHMMYWOOD drops in class and will be showing more.

Race 6

(4) TWIN B HOLLISTER has just been racing evenly recently but the Simpson trainee has beaten better than these in the past. (2) MY TEMUDJIN N returns from The Meadowlands where he's been picking up small checks and much like the top choice he's won locally in a higher class. (6) LORD OF MISRULE picks up Dube, who may get aggressive early.

Race 7

(3) OHOKA TEXAS N was an upset winner versus lesser last week at Pocono and he ships in for connections who usually have them ready; worth a look in this wide-open affair. (4) ART OF ILLUSION drops and gets needed post relief; logical. (5) HI HO STEVERINO was scratched sick from the rail last week when I liked him; Bamond trainee fits at this level.

Race 8

(5) LYONS SHADOW is a half length shy of a four race win streak to start her season; late bloomer looks sharpest here. (2) SHAKAI HANOVER ships in for Croghan looking to break the seasonal skid after a nice freshman campaign. (6) HEAVEN ON EARTH upset the top choice when last seen here.

Race 9

(5) VALIDUS DEO was second best last week to a sharp rival and he should be able to take control versus these. (3) MONTREAL PHIL isn't what he used to be but he should still be competitive here. (1) SOUTHERN ALLIE is in line for a perfect trip from this spot.

Race 10

(6) DALLENBACH HANOVER blew away cheaper last out and the classy veteran shouldn't have a problem with the class hike. (3) ALLSTAR PARTNER hasn't won in the last two years which clearly is a red flag but the talent is there. (1) MAINLAND KEY N gets the best post and should be looking to secure early position.

Race 11

(2) SCARLET CHASER had no chance in his last two races from outside posts. With the move inside he should be in line for a winning trip. (7) BULLET BOB was a well-rated winner last week and should be firing from the gate again. (1) MC RUSTY almost got there last out at a huge price.

MLB Preview: Royals (39-27) at Mariners (32-38)

Game: 1
Venue: Safeco Field
Date: June 22, 2015 10:10 PM EDT

Following the worst start of an otherwise outstanding career, Felix Hernandez answered with a routinely dominant performance.

Which version of Hernandez will be on display against the Kansas City Royals remains to be seen, but the Seattle Mariners will hope for the latter when they open a three-game series Monday night.

Hernandez (10-3, 3.08 ERA) was hit hard at Houston on June 12, allowing eight runs while recording only one out in a 10-0 loss. The outing matched both the shortest and most earned runs allowed of Hernandez's 11-year career.

He rebounded with eight shutout innings Wednesday against San Francisco in a 2-0 victory, his league-leading 10th.

"I keep running out of words to describe this guy," manager Lloyd McClendon told MLB's official website. "I expected that he would come back strong. I thought he was a little bit more pumped. (But) I can't imagine him being more focused than he usually is."

The right-hander is 4-4 with a 2.80 ERA in 11 starts against the Royals (39-27), but this will be his first matchup since 2013.

Kansas City enters this series after losing two of three to Boston following an 8-2 stretch. Chris Young became the latest Royals starter to struggle, allowing seven runs over 4 2-3 innings in Sunday's 13-2 loss as the team's ERA reached 9.98 in the three-game series.

Joe Blanton (1-0, 1.80) will look to reverse that trend after pitching well in his first start of the season Wednesday. The right-hander allowed one run in five innings of a 10-2 win against Milwaukee - his first victory as a starting pitcher since June 29, 2013.

"It was about what I expected. Joe's been throwing the ball really, really well," manager Ned Yost said. "Going into it, the game plan was to see if we could get him through five innings, between 70 and 80 pitches with the lead, and it all worked out perfectly."

Blanton had 73 pitches in that win as he continues to extend his arm from a brief bullpen stint to begin the year, and Yost expects him to last close to 90 pitches on Monday.

Blanton is 0-2 with a 4.86 ERA in his last three starts against Seattle (32-38), all of which took place in 2013, and will face a Mariners offense that has yet to hit a groove despite a weekend series win against the Astros.

Nelson Cruz, Mark Trumbo and Seth Smith all hit home runs in Saturday's 6-3 win, but the Mariners followed with only four hits in a 6-2 defeat Sunday.

Seattle, which ranks 14th in the AL in runs (238) and last in batting average (.231), has scored two or fewer 12 times in its last 18 games.

Kyle Seager is 2 for 14 in his last four games, and Austin Jackson is hitless in his last three as the Mariners have averaged 5.5 hits in their last six contests.

Kansas City has been more consistent at the plate, recording double digits in hits in six straight games before it had nine Sunday. Alex Gordon is hitting .400 in those seven games, while Lorenzo Cain and Alcides Escobar each have eight RBIs.

Eric Hosmer has found success against Hernandez, going 4 for 9 with a double, and Kendrys Morales is batting .292 with a home run and four doubles.

MLB roundup: Tigers' Martinez hits 3 homers vs. Yanks
By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

NEW YORK -- J.D. Martinez hit three home runs and drove in six runs as the Detroit Tigers roughed up Masahiro Tanaka and snapped a four-game losing streak with an 12-4 rout of the New York Yankees on Sunday.

Martinez hit his first home run during Detroit's four-run first when he drove a 0-1 fastball from Tanaka (4-3) to the loading dock over the left-center field wall. His second home run opened the fifth when he sent a first pitch curveball over the center field wall adjacent to Monument Park and that gave him his first career two-homer game.

Martinez became the first Tiger to get three home runs in a game since first baseman Miguel Cabrera on May 19, 2013, when he hit a 1-1 fastball from rookie reliever Danny Burawa into the first row of the second deck in right field with one out in the sixth.

Victor Martinez also homered and drove in four runs for the Tigers. In his third game off the disabled list, he hit a two-run home run with two outs in the first and added a two-run single in the second.

Indians 1, Rays 0

CLEVELAND -- David Murphy's sacrifice fly with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning drove in the winning run as Cleveland shut out Tampa Bay.

Roberto Perez led off the bottom of the ninth with a single to left off right-hander Kevin Jepsen (1-5). Jason Kipnis singled to right, extending his hitting streak to 15 games. Perez went to third on the hit by Kipnis, Francisco Lindor flied out to left for the first out and Michael Brantley was intentionally walked, loading the bases. Murphy then hit a fly ball that was caught by center fielder Kevin Kiermaier, but the throw was a fraction of a second late to get the sliding Perez.

The win went to right-hander Cody Allen (1-2), who pitched the top of the ninth. Right-hander Cody Anderson, in his major league debut, was impressive, pitching 7 2/3 scoreless innings on six hits, with four strikeouts and one walk.

Reds 5, Marlins 2

CINCINNATI -- Jay Bruce snapped a 2-2 tie with a two-run homer and rookie Michael Lorenzen settled down to turn in seven solid innings as Cincinnati bounced back to beat Miami.

Todd Frazier also hit a two-run homer, and Lorenzen helped himself with an RBI single as the Reds completed a 3-1 homestand in which one game was lost to rain.

Lorenzen (3-2) lasted seven innings for the second time this season, allowing seven hits and two runs with one intentional walk and five strikeouts.

Nationals 9, Pirates 2

WASHINGTON -- Yunel Escobar had two hits in the first inning, including a three-run homer, and Bryce Harper contributed to the record-setting frame with a two-run homer as Washington swept the three-game series.

Nationals starter Gio Gonzalez (5-4), who gave up five runs in his last start, allowed just four hits and no runs in seven innings before Matt Thornton took over in the eighth. First-place Washington has won seven in a row over the second-place Pirates.

The Nationals set a franchise record of 24 innings in a row without allowing a run when Thornton set down the side in the eighth. Corey Hart hit a two-run homer in the ninth off Felipe Rivero to ruin the shutout bid by a trio of lefties.

Phillies 9, Cardinals 2

PHILADELPHIA -- Adam Morgan made a successful major league debut and got some much-needed offense from a lineup that had been struggling for weeks, as Philadelphia salvaged the series finale with St. Louis.

Morgan (1-0), who was notified late in the week that he would be moving up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to replace right-handed pitcher Seth Rosin, exited the game to raucous applause after throwing 5 2/3 innings, allowing just one run on six hits and striking out six batters on 78 pitches, 54 of which were strikes. He became the first Phillies starter to earn a win since May 23, a franchise-record span of 25 starts without a victory for the rotation.

The Phillies' offense made it easy for him, scoring more runs than it had in any game this season. The Phillies hit the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second inning in a big way, scoring three runs on Cardinals starter Michael Wacha (9-3).

Orioles 13, Blue Jays 9

TORONTO -- J.J. Hardy singled in the go-ahead run in a four-run ninth inning as Baltimore defeated Toronto.

Ryan Flaherty followed with a two-run triple against Blue Jays left-hander Brett Cecil (1-4.). The Orioles squandered a 7-0 lead and fell behind 9-7 before tying the game in the seventh on a single by Hardy.

Right-handed reliever Darren O'Day (4-0) earned the win for the second game in a row as the Orioles took the rubber match of the three-game series.

Cubs 8, Twins 0

MINNEAPOLIS -- Jake Arrieta threw a complete-game shutout, allowing just four hits and striking out seven as Chicago won the rubber match of a three-game series against Minnesota.

Arrieta improved to 7-5 and lowered his season ERA to 3.07. He retired 12 in a row between the fourth and eighth innings. The Cubs had 30 hits over the final two games of the series.

Anthony Rizzo had two hits, including a solo homer, and Dexter Fowler had a grand slam for the Cubs.

Red Sox 13, Royals 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- David Ortiz hit a milestone home run and Xander Bogaerts stroked three doubles and drove in three runs as Boston thrashed Kansas City Royals.

The Red Sox set season highs with runs, eight doubles and 13 extra-base hits. Left-hander Wade Miley (7-7) stymied the Royals on five hits, while striking out two and walking three in six scoreless innings. The Red Sox's 16-hit attack included three hits each by Mookie Betts, Brock Holt, Dustin Pedroia and Bogaerts.

Ortiz led off the fourth with his 476th career home run, passing Hall of Famers Stan Musial and Willie Stargell for 28th on the all-time list.

White Sox 3, Rangers 2 (11 innings)

CHICAGO -- Gordon Beckham hit his first career walk-off home run in the 11th inning to give the White Sox their second straight win after losing eight straight games.

Beckham, who had replaced Conor Gillaspie at third base in the 10th inning, launched the game-winning solo shot off Rangers reliever Alex Claudio (1-1).

White Sox reliever Jake Petricka (2-2) pitched out of bases-loaded, one-out jam in the top of the 11th to get the win.

The Rangers had tied the game 2-2 in the seventh inning on a solo home run by center fielder Leonys Martin.

Diamondbacks 7, Padres 2

PHOENIX -- Arizona All-Star candidates Paul Goldschmidt and A.J. Pollock had two-run singles, and right-hander Jeremy Hellickson struck out a season-high seven in the Diamondbacks' victory.

First baseman Goldschmidt and center fielder Pollock did their damage in a seven-run second inning off right-hander Andrew Cashner (2-9), who was victimized by two infield errors.

Hellickson (5-4) gave up two runs and six hits and did not walk a batter in six innings while making the fifth quality start in his last six. Hellickson also had an RBI when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the second, the Diamondbacks' biggest inning of the season.

Andrew Chafin had a three-inning save for Arizona, which has won seven of its last 10 games.

A's 3, Angels 2

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Scott Kazmir gave up one run over 7 1/3 innings, and Oakland defeated Los Angeles at the O.co Coliseum, taking two of three games to win the series. Kazmir had lost four straight starts against the Angels, one of his three former teams, before ending that streak.

Albert Pujols hit his American League-leading 21st home run, a two-run shot in the eighth inning off closer Tyler Clippard, cutting Oakland's lead to 3-2.

Garrett Richards (7-5) gave up three runs on eight hits over seven innings as his two-game winning streak ended. It was his third straight quality start since allowing six runs on five hits in just two-thirds of an inning in an 8-2 loss to the Yankees on June 6.

Rockies 10, Brewers 4

DENVER -- Colorado ended a long, disappointing stretch of games with a one-sided win over Milwaukee that gave the Rockies their third victory in 12 games.

Charlie Blackmon had a season-high four RBIs, and Nick Hundley tied his career high with four hits. Troy Tulowitzki drove in three runs, and Nolan Arenado homered.

Chris Rusin rebounded from two poor starts to pitch six strong innings as the Rockies won the rubber game of the series, giving them consecutive victories for the first time since June 8-9.

Braves 1, Mets 0

ATLANTA -- Julio Teheran allowed just one hit over seven shutout innings while outdueling Matt Harvey in Atlanta's victory over New York at Turner Field.

The win gave Atlanta a sweep of the three-game series and handed New York its fifth consecutive loss. Atlanta pulled within a half-game of the Mets for second place in the National League East. The Braves trail the first-place Washington Nationals by two games.

The Braves broke the scoreless tie in the seventh inning. Ryan Lavarnway doubled high off the wall in left field with two outs and scored on a pinch-hit single to shallow center field by Pedro Ciriaco.

Astros 6, Mariners 2

SEATTLE -- Houston piled up 10 hits, including home runs from Colby Rasmus and George Springer, to snap its two-game losing streak with a win over Seattle.

Rasmus broke open a close game with a two-out, two-run shot off Seattle reliever Tom Wilhelmsen in the seventh inning, giving the Astros a 5-2 lead. Springer added a solo shot to lead off the ninth.

Seven different Houston players had hits in the win, with Springer going 3-for-5 and Rasmus added a pair of hits on a day when the Astros used six pitchers. The Houston bullpen allowed only one hit over the final 5 2/3 innings, with reliever Will Harris (4-0) earning the win.

Dodgers 10, Giants 2

LOS ANGELES -- Yasmani Grandal hit two of Los Angeles' four home runs in a rout of San Francisco in front of 53,509 at Dodger Stadium.

The Dodgers used the victory to extend their lead over the second-place Giants in the National League West to 1 1/2 games, and to salvage one contest in the three-game weekend series.

Grandal and Adrian Gonzalez each had three of the Dodgers' 16 hits. Gonzalez and Justin Turner added a homer apiece, with Turner driving in three runs.

Scherzer gives no-hitter as Father's Day gift
By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

Max Scherzer has given his dad the perfect gift for Father's Day -- a near-perfect no-hitter.

Scherzer's parents from Missouri were in town at Nationals Park on Saturday to see the Washington Nationals ace throw the no-hitter for an unforgettable Father's Day present.

"It was great to be able to share last night with them as well," Scherzer said Sunday morning after he came within a strike of a perfect game before hitting the Pittsburgh Pirates' Jose Tabata in Washington's 6-0 victory. "That's what my dad wanted (for Father's Day). He doesn't want a tie. I gave him a no-hitter, so he's pretty happy."

Brad and Jan Scherzer decided to visit this weekend instead of next month, putting them among 41,104 fans in attendance to see the historic feat.

"This was the weekend that worked best, so they were able to come here, so it was great to be able to share last night with them as well," Scherzer said with the ball he threw for the final out resting behind him in his locker. "I didn't get much sleep, but that's for a good reason, just on a high from the game. "

The right-hander, in the first year of a seven-year, $210 million contract, established a career high with 16 strikeouts, also setting a single-game record for the Nationals' franchise.

Scherzer, who is now 8-5 with a 1.76 earned-run average, is the first pitcher to throw back-to-back complete games while allowing one hit or fewer in both games since Jim Tobin in 1944 with the Boston Braves. Scherzer threw a one-hitter at Milwaukee on June 14.

In his past two starts, Scherzer has retired 54 of 57 batters with a combined 26 strikeouts.

The pinch-hitting Tabata was all that stood between Scherzer and the 22nd perfect game in major league history since 1900.

Tabata fouled off three 2-2 deliveries, then seemed to slightly drop his left elbow and got nicked by a pitch.

"I wanted to get a hit," Tabata said Sunday. "People don't understand that those were the instincts people have. I wasn't looking to get hit. I wanted to get a hit. I wanted to get on base."

Yanks RHP Santos to undergo Tommy John surgery
The Sports Xchange

New York Yankees right-hander Sergio Santos will undergo Tommy John surgery on his right elbow sometime this week.

Santos was placed on the 15-day disabled list last week (retroactive to June 15) with right elbow inflammation. He signed a contract with the Yankees on June 13 and made just two appearances.

Santos agreed to a minor league deal with the Yankees in early June after electing to become a free agent when the Los Angeles Dodgers designated him for assignment.

Santos has a 4.96 ERA in 16 1/3 innings this season with the Dodgers and Yankees combined. He recorded 30 saves for the Chicago White Sox in 2011.

The Yankees also announced that left-hander Jacob Lindgren will undergo surgery Monday to remove a bone spur in his left elbow.

Yankees head team physician, Dr. Christopher Ahmad, will perform the surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. Recovery and rehab time is expected to be no more than 12 weeks, the team said.
