KEY STAT: Rayo have won none of their last 13 away games

EXPERT VERDICT: Espanyol had a miserable night on Thursday – losing 3-0 at home to Betis – but can recover quickly by defeating relegation-threatened Rayo, who are two points worse off after their 5-1 loss at home to Barcelona. Both teams will be lacking confidence but Rayo - minus suspended duo Diego Llorente and Manuel Iturra - look the most vulnerable.

RECOMMENDATION: Espanyol

Preview: Lightning (39-22) at Flyers (30-23)

Date: March 07, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

Owners of a franchise-record win streak, the Tampa Bay Lightning can next match their longest-ever run on the road when they face an opponent they've dominated in recent seasons.

The Lightning try for a 10th consecutive victory and seventh in a row away from home while trying to spoil the finale of the Philadelphia Flyers' successful homestand Monday night.

Tampa Bay (39-22-4) needed a comeback to set the team mark with a 4-3 overtime victory over Carolina on Saturday. Tyler Johnson got the tying goal with 6:18 remaining in regulation and Alex Killorn scored in the final minute of the extra period.

"It's hard enough to win in this league, let alone ring off nine in a row," said coach Jon Cooper, whose team is 20-5-0 in its last 25. "It's a testament to how the group has really stuck together."

Ondrej Palat added two goals for Tampa Bay.

The first-place Lightning can now equal their best road win streak, established Jan. 7-Feb. 1, 2007. They can also add to a two-point lead over Florida and three-point advantage over Boston in the Atlantic Division.

They've won 14 of 18 against the Flyers (30-23-11), their best results against any Eastern Conference opponent since the beginning of the 2010-11 season.

The Lightning topped Philadelphia 3-2 in overtime in the season opener for both clubs Oct. 8 at Tampa. Ben Bishop stopped two penalty shots - one in OT - and paved the way for defenseman Jason Garrison to net the winning goal, his second of the game.

Tampa Bay has taken five of eight meetings at Philadelphia, splitting its two trips there last season.

The Flyers bounced back from a 4-0 defeat to Edmonton on Thursday with a 6-0 rout of Columbus on Saturday, giving them a 4-1-0 mark on their six-game homestand and a sixth victory in nine contests overall.

Ex-Lightning defenseman Radko Gudas scored two goals - ending a 65-game drought - and had two assists.

"I think we all knew what we needed to do to win this game. We had our mindset on the right things," he said. "I'm glad we turned it around that fast. I'm glad we got the two points."

Gudas will face his former team for the first time. He was a healthy scratch in the season opener.

Forward Wayne Simmonds has four goals and two assists in his last six matchups with Tampa Bay, while Flyers leading scorer Claude Giroux has one goal and nine assists in the past eight meetings.

Lightning star Steven Stamkos has recorded 10 goals and four assists in his last 10 games against Philadelphia. Valtteri Filppula has three goals and 10 assists in a 10-game streak versus the Flyers.

Preview: Sabres (26-31) at Maple Leafs (21-33)

Date: March 07, 2016 7:30 PM EDT

If any team can sympathize with Toronto's struggles, it's probably Buffalo. The Maple Leafs have replaced the Sabres as the NHL's worst team, a title held by their Atlantic Division foes for the previous two seasons.

That status hasn't quite been cemented for the season with just over a month to go and the Eastern Conference's two worst teams still meeting three times, and Monday night's tilt in Toronto threatens the Maple Leafs with their second six-game losing streak of the season.

After Saturday's 3-2 shootout loss to Minnesota, the Sabres (26-31-9) are nine points up on the Maple Leafs (21-33-10), though Toronto has two games in hand as it plays the third of a four-game homestand.

Buffalo took a 2-1 lead in the second period but gave up a goal with under six minutes left in the third and let another point slip away in a shootout.

Jack Eichel and Johan Larsson each scored for a second straight game, and Larsson has three of his five goals for the season in the last five contests.

"I think we played well, too," said Eichel, who added an assist. "We had a lot of chances. We did a lot of good things as a team. It's a tough one to swallow."

The Sabres have won one of their seven shootouts this season with six straight losses, but the win came against Toronto. Eichel was the only of four Sabres to convert versus the Wild, and they've gone 1 for 18 on shootout chances in the defeats.

"It's just frustrating with our shootout results this year," Eichel said. "The shootout's an opportunity to grab an extra point. I think as a group we can bear down and start taking advantage of it."

The difference in regulation was a failed penalty kill on Buffalo's only short-handed situation of the game. The Sabres have allowed a power-play goal in consecutive games but have killed 27 of 30 penalties over the last 10 contests.

"A big kills probably wins us the game," coach Dan Bylsma said. "Our penalty kill has been so good for us for long periods of the game."

The Sabres have averaged 3.5 goals over a 3-0-1 span in the series, winning 2-1 in the shootout on Oct. 21 in the season's only meeting. That was part of a 0-5-1 stretch for Toronto on which it scored nine goals.

On it's current skid, there have been seven goals in five straight regulation defeats. After Saturday's 3-2 loss to Ottawa, the reaction wasn't quite as dour as one might expect.

"I thought we had lots of good things today," coach Mike Babcock told the team's official website. "I thought (Zach) Hyman, (Nikita Soshnikov) and (William) Nylander were all real good for us, which is a positive. I thought our team pace was as good as it's been all year."

The 19-year-old Nylander scored his first goal in his fourth NHL game, while the 22-year-old Soshnikov got his second in his fourth in the league.

They'll have fellow youngster Garret Sparks in front of them in goal with the 22-year-old hoping to improve on a 2-2-0 record, 2.14 goals-against average and .925 save percentage in his last five NHL games.

He'll face Chad Johnson, who has won consecutive games as part of a 4-3-1 span with a 2.34 GAA and .927 save percentage. He beat the Maple Leafs back in October to improve to 2-0-1 with a 2.02 GAA and .924 save percentage in four career matchups.

Preview: Bruins (36-23) at Panthers (36-21)

Date: March 07, 2016 7:30 PM EDT

The Florida Panthers' lackluster road trip cost them the Atlantic Division lead and has them in danger of getting passed by Boston as well.

The Panthers can prevent that from happening in Monday night's visit from the Bruins, and Jaromir Jagr will try to lend a hand while attempting to pass Gordie Howe on the NHL scoring list.

Florida (36-21-8) finished 1-3-1 on its trip with a 5-1 defeat to Arizona on Saturday, dropping two points behind surging Tampa Bay in the division.

"It wasn't a good road trip for us. We should have played better. We didn't have our 60-minute games that it takes to win in this league," coach Gerard Gallant said. "We have got to forget about it and look forward to the next three games at home."

The Panthers return to Sunrise one point ahead of Boston (36-23-7), which is 4-1-1 in six after a 2-1 overtime loss to Washington on Saturday. The Bruins have won nine of 11 on the road.

"I think we're playing better, but there's always room to improve," defenseman Zdeno Chara said. "It's not getting any easier, and we have some tough games ahead of us."

The Bruins have a pair of 3-1 victories over the Panthers this season, including one in Florida on Oct. 30. There could be a little more buzz for this visit with Jagr looking to break his tie with Howe.

The Panthers' leading scorer registered his 1,850th point Thursday with an assist in a 3-2 loss to Colorado. Jagr's 743 goals are third-most in NHL history, 58 fewer than Howe, and he can pass Bruins great Ray Bourque for ninth with his 1,613th game.

Jagr, who played 11 games for Boston in 2012-13 among his many stops, has two assists in his last five matchups. Jiri Hudler has four goals and two assists in his past three meetings, and eight and six in 11 career games against the Bruins.

Boston forward Brad Marchand has four goals in his last three games against Florida, but he's cooled off since a torrid stretch. Marchand has scored one goal in his past four contests after tallying 17 of his career-high 33 in the previous 19 games.

Patrice Bergeron has scored a goal in three straight games. He has four and five assists in his last seven versus Florida.

Tuukka Rask was in the net for the Bruins' two games against the Panthers this season and is expected to start Monday in the opener of a back-to-back.

The Bruins' defense corps might be short-handed with Kevin Miller's status uncertain. He left Saturday's game with an upper-body injury.

"It's really tough. Hopefully he gets back soon," Rask said. "He's been playing great, really solid. He's always been solid defensively, but lately I think he's really improved his game with the puck, finding lanes to pass the puck and score some goals."

Florida forward Jussi Jokinen will try to extend his season-high point streak to eight games. He has eight assists during that run but one assist in his last four contests against Boston.

Preview: Sharks (35-23) at Flames (27-34)

Date: March 07, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

The San Jose Sharks' push for the Pacific Division lead stalled as they struggled somewhat offensively in their first defeat in four games.

They've had little trouble scoring against Calgary this season and will look to bounce back Monday night when they visit a Flames team coming off its first win in two weeks.

A quirky portion of the schedule had the Sharks (35-23-6) facing Vancouver three times over a seven-day stretch. While they totaled seven goals in the first two, they lost 4-2 on Saturday.

Brent Burns tied it at 2 early in the third with his career-high 23rd goal but San Jose came up empty on its other 15 shots in the final period.

The Sharks remained four points behind second-place Los Angeles and dropped six back of Pacific-leading Anaheim.

San Jose, which also scored six in last Monday's win over Montreal, has a prime opportunity to rediscover its offensive prowess against a Flames team tied with Arizona for the league's worst goals-against average at 3.12.

The Sharks have played a big part in Calgary's defensive struggles, scoring five times in three of four meetings this season. Their 17 goals versus the Flames are their most against them in a season since scoring 24 in six meetings in 1997-98.

Logan Couture has two goals and four assists in the season series while Patrick Marleau and Joe Thornton each have two and three.

Calgary (27-34-4) had been a mess defensively, yielding at least five goals three times in a four-game stretch before Saturday's 4-2 win at Pittsburgh that snapped a seven-game losing streak.

Mikael Backlund scored the go-ahead goal in the second period and Lance Bouma added another in the third for the Flames, who dropped 10 of their previous 11.

"You lose as many games as we have in the last while and it's tough to keep that positive attitude,' center Joe Colborne said. 'It's definitely going to be a bit more fun that it has been lately.'

The de facto No. 1 goaltender after Karri Ramo's season-ending injury, Jonas Hiller certainly hasn't been having much recently in posting a 4.71 GAA while losing his last three starts. He gave up five goals in his only start against San Jose this season Nov. 28, then stopped all eight shots faced upon relieving Ramo after he suffered his knee injury in the last matchup with the Sharks, a 6-5 Flames shootout win Feb. 11.

Joni Ortio got the start against the Penguins and made 29 saves for his first victory in 10 games this season.

The Sharks also went with their backup goalie in their last game and didn't do James Reimer any favors in his team debut. They gave up a season high-tying seven power-play chances after taking five penalties in their previous four games. The Canucks scored three times with the extra skater.

'We got that first goal and then we started to take a lot of penalties,' captain Joe Pavelski said. 'A lot of soft ones, too. It was everybody. It was one of those nights that we couldn't stay out of the box.'

The Sharks have had similar problems against the Flames this season, allowing six power-play goals on 19 opportunities. However, they've also been stellar with the man advantage, converting seven of 15 chances.

Set to open a season-high six-game homestand, Calgary has been plenty vulnerable when playing with a manpower disadvantage. It has allowed a league-worst 19 power-play goals since Feb. 9, killing 67.8 percent of penalties.

Martin Jones, who has posted a 1.67 GAA in winning his last three starts, is 3-1-0 lifetime against Calgary despite a 3.25 GAA.

Preview: Coyotes (28-31) at Avalanche (33-30)

Date: March 07, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

Mikkel Boedker is grateful for an opportunity to compete for a playoff spot, though the Colorado Avalanche have some work to do to achieve one.

The slumping Avalanche hope to rectify their recent problems in an important home game Monday night against Boedker's former team, the Arizona Coyotes.

Colorado (33-30-4) believed it had bolstered its postseason chances by landing Boedker, one of the top available forwards, in a four-player trade with the Coyotes at last Monday's deadline. While the move added another threat to an already capable offense, it hasn't solved the team's continuing defensive issues or its struggles to close out games.

The Avalanche let a one-goal lead slip away in Saturday's potentially damaging 5-2 home loss to Nashville that dropped them to ninth place in the Western Conference. They allowed four unanswered third-period goals and have been outscored 11-1 in the final frame during a 1-3-0 stretch.

"I thought we played really well for 40 minutes, again," coach Patrick Roy said. "Our third periods need to be better. We need to be smarter in the third period. We have to learn to play those situations much better."

Colorado has surrendered five goals or more in all four losses of a 2-4-0 sequence, during which Semyon Varlamov's play has regressed. The usually dependable goaltender has permitted 11 goals over his past three starts and been pulled in two of his last five.

Calvin Pickard provided greater stability with a 38-save effort in Thursday's 3-2 win over Florida that opened this four-game homestand. He followed with 35 against the Predators but allowed two costly goals in the third before two empty-netters.

Boedker has a goal and an assist in three games since the trade, though he's been outdone by one of the players Colorado gave up for his services. Alex Tanguay scored twice and added an assist in his Arizona debut, helping his new club snap a season-high seven-game skid with Saturday's 5-1 rout of reeling Florida.

After being scratched for the first two games following the trade, Tanguay flourished on a line with Antoine Vermette and Anthony Duclair that accounted for three goals. Arizona had just eight total over its previous six.

'We had a good mix out there. We had a couple of good practices,' said Vermette, who matched a career high with four points. 'You want to translate that into a game. (Tanguay's) a smart guy. He's been through a lot, a lot of experience. He won a Cup also. He's a good passer, smart player.'

Tanguay drew into the lineup with Max Domi serving a one-game suspension for instigating a fight near the end of Thursday's 5-1 loss to Anaheim.

Louis Domingue provided a further boost with 32 saves. The rookie had a 4.04 goals-against average in losing his six prior starts.

Arizona begins a four-game trip and has dropped eight straight on the road, though it's won both matchups with the Avalanche this season. Boedker had a hand in each, scoring the deciding goal in a 2-1 overtime victory at the Pepsi Center on Dec. 27 and notching two assists in a 4-2 home win on Nov. 5.

Shane Doan had a power-play goal Saturday but the Coyotes are just 3 of 29 in man-advantage situations over an eight-game stretch. Colorado has killed 26 of 27 penalties over nine games since Feb. 14, the NHL's best percentage during that span.

Preview: Capitals (48-13) at Ducks (37-19)

Date: March 07, 2016 10:00 PM EDT

Bruce Boudreau's tenure with the Washington Capitals was marked by regular-season successes and postseason disappointments.

He's got the Anaheim Ducks playing at a championship level now, however.

In a marquee matchup with the makings of a possible Stanley Cup Final preview, the soaring Ducks look to extend their franchise-best winning streak to 12 when the NHL-leading Capitals visit Honda Center on Monday night.

While Washington (48-13-4) remains the league's most consistently successful team this season, the Ducks are unquestionably the hottest. Anaheim (37-19-8) has vaulted back atop the Pacific Division with an 18-1-1 surge.

The Ducks had struggled to a 12-15-6 start.

'I think they always believed,' said Boudreau, who won four division titles in six seasons with Washington from 2007-11 but never advanced past the Eastern Conference semifinals. 'I mean, we haven't changed much from what we did last year. There were a couple of big meetings, and we converted our style just a little bit.'

The Ducks, aiming for a fourth straight division crown under Boudreau, moved two points ahead of Los Angeles with Saturday's 3-2 victory. They got another strong performance from Frederik Andersen and more production from a power play that's been nearly unstoppable during their tear.

David Perron and Jakob Silfverberg scored on the man advantage to snap a 1-all tie and support Andersen's 32 saves. Boudreau became the fastest in NHL history to reach 400 wins.

'I must have had good teams,' he said. 'I was lucky in Washington, and lucky to have a great team here.'

Boudreau's current group has converted a staggering 44.2 percent (19 of 43) of its man-advantage chances during the streak and has at least one power-play goal in each of its 14 wins since the All-Star break.

The Ducks might need to avoid trips to the box in order to keep their run going, as their one recent weakness has been penalty killing. They've posted a 76.1 percent mark during the streak, and both of the Kings' goals came on the power play.

Washington owns the league's best power play at 23.2 percent as well as its top road record at 22-7-2. It's won nine of 12 as a visitor after beginning a four-game trip with Saturday's 2-1 overtime win over Boston.

The Capitals have also won five straight in Anaheim, extending that run with a 5-3 victory Feb. 15, 2015 behind Alex Ovechkin's two goals and two assists.

However, Ovechkin - who's recorded a NHL-leading 41 goals but has one over his last five games - could be facing league discipline after being assessed a boarding major for a hit that hospitalized Bruins defenseman Kevan Miller.

'It's just a hockey play,' he said. 'You don't want to be in position to take a penalty, but the referee said I get five minutes because I was heavier than him.'

The Capitals could have trouble scoring regardless of Ovechkin's status, as Andersen is 12-0-2 with a 1.76 goals-against average in his last 14 starts. He's posted a 1.33 GAA in winning six straight at home.

Counterpart Braden Holtby hasn't been able to duplicate his stellar first-half numbers, recording a 2.74 GAA in 14 starts following the All-Star break. The NHL wins leader, coming off a 20-save effort in Thursday's 3-2 loss to the New York Rangers, had a 2.03 GAA going into the break.

Preview: Canucks (25-27) at Kings (38-22)

Date: March 07, 2016 10:30 PM EDT

The Los Angeles Kings have finally ceded the top spot in the Pacific Division to a rampaging opponent that has dominated them of late.

They've mostly handled Vancouver over the past three seasons, though, and Los Angeles looks to bounce back when it hosts the Canucks on Monday night.

The Kings (38-22-4) saw what was once a 16-point lead over Anaheim fully erased Saturday, losing 3-2 to the visiting Ducks as their city-area rivals moved two points ahead in the Pacific. Anaheim has gone 18-1-1 since being 16 back Jan. 20, while Los Angeles is 9-9-1 in that span.

Los Angeles has dropped 11 of the past 13 regular-season meetings with its chief rival in the division.

"Every win and loss is a matter of home ice in the playoffs, so yes, we do realize what's at stake here," center Anze Kopitar told the team's official website. "We fell behind here today and we're going to have to catch up ground."

Penalty killing continued to be a problem for the Kings. They allowed the Ducks to go 2 for 2 on the power play and have given up five goals in nine chances with the man advantage over the past three games - a 1-2-0 stretch that's followed a four-game win streak.

Los Angeles has killed off 76.8 percent of short-handed situations since Jan. 20 - one of the league's worst marks in that span.

'The majority of the time, special teams are the difference. And that wasn't any different today,' Kopitar said.

The level of offensive production also wasn't any different. The Kings have scored 17 times in their last 10 contests.

Both of their goals came on the power play, but they lost despite a 34-22 shot advantage. Jonathan Quick, expected to start again Monday, made 19 saves and has posted a 3.06 goals-against average and .864 save percentage in his last three outings.

His numbers are considerably better against the Canucks (25-27-2), with a 1.64 GAA in 29 career regular-season matchups and 1.07 mark in the past 13 - a stretch in which he's posted three shutouts and hasn't allowed more than two goals. Quick made 27 saves in a 5-0 victory at Vancouver on Dec. 28, the Kings' ninth win in 13 meetings.

Vancouver, though, brings a dangerous power play into Monday, having scored three times in seven chances to snap a three-game skid with a 4-2 win at San Jose on Saturday. Dan Hamhuis scored the final one with the man advantage in the third period for the Canucks, who recorded just their third game of more than two goals in the past 11.

Vancouver generated only 11 power plays over the previous six games, though it's gone 9 for 26 in the last nine.

"It was exactly what we talked about before the game," Hamhuis told the team's website. "We were only drawing one or two penalties a game. We need teams to start getting frustrated with us and skating where they are forced to take penalties. I thought our guys did a really good job of that tonight."

The victory, though, was tempered by the loss of captain Henrik Sedin, who suffered an upper-body injury early in the first period after taking a forearm to the chest. Sedin took his next shift but played only 3:36 in the first and did not come out for the second.

Vancouver also lost defenseman Christopher Tanev in the third to an injury.

"I have to talk to them to make sure, but I don't think Hank will be with us in L.A.," coach Willie Desjardins said.

The Canucks have gone 2-0-1 in their last three at Staples Center.

Grand Salami - March

The Grand Salami in pro hockey is decided by adding up all the goals scored in every game scheduled for that particular day. You can wager on 'over' or 'under' the Grand Salami total. The total is set by adding up all listed 'over/under' odds for each game on that particular day.

Note: The Grand Salami will have no action if any game is suspended or cancelled before the regulation time of three twenty minute periods. Also, regardless of the number of goals scored during the shoot out portion of the overtime, the final scored recorded for the game will give the winning team on more goal than its opponent based on the score at the end of regulation time.

*The majority of sportsbooks do not put out a total on the Grand Salami when there is only one game on the card. For tracking purposes, we will continue to show the 'over/under' for goals and combined goals scored on days with just one game.

Preview: Timberwolves (20-43) at Hornets (33-28)

Date: March 07, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

The Charlotte Hornets continue to show their second-half surge is no fluke, and it doesn't figure to stop anytime soon.

The rising Hornets will be favored to win a fourth straight game when they continue a lengthy homestand Monday night against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Charlotte (33-28) has kept climbing the East by compiling a 14-5 record since Jan. 22, the conference's third-best mark behind Toronto and Boston over that span. It's in sole possession of sixth place following Friday's 108-101 victory over Indiana that opened a seven-game stay at Time Warner Cable Arena.

The Hornets have won nine of 11 to move within a game of fifth-place Atlanta as they enter a favorable stretch. Four of their final six games on the homestand are against sub-.500 teams, and they've won four straight and seven of eight at Charlotte.

Defense has been the club's calling card during the upswing, though it's also been quite efficient on the offensive end of late. The Hornets are averaging 117.7 points and 43.4 percent shooting from 3-point range during the streak, making 10 or more 3s in all three wins.

"I don't think they just have our number," Pacers coach Frank Vogel said after the Hornets completed a three-game season sweep. "They're playing as one of the best teams in the league right now and they've been too much for us.'

Charlotte has been increasingly tough to handle when Kemba Walker hasn't had to carry the offense. That was the case Friday as Nicolas Batum scored 31 points to complement Walker's 33 and 10 assists.

Walker is averaging 29.6 points during the streak and 24.8 over his last 20 games, and should have a good chance to continue that scoring binge against a Timberwolves team that's allowed 103 or more in 14 straight.

Minnesota (20-43), though, has been better during a 6-7 stretch in which its promising young trio of Karl Anthony-Towns, Andrew Wiggins and Zach LaVine has continued to progress.

All three were factors in Saturday's 132-118 home win over Brooklyn in which the Timberwolves shot a franchise-best 68.4 percent, the highest by any team since the Los Angeles Clippers hit 69.3 against the Raptors on March 13, 1998. Towns had 28 points on 14-of-18 shooting, Wiggins scored 26 on 10 of 14 and LaVine added 21 while making nine of 12.

Minnesota also did a far better job of protecting the basketball, committing 12 turnovers one night after recording a season-high 26 in a 116-101 loss at Milwaukee. Interim coach Sam Mitchell had benched four starters for much of the second half against Bucks.

'We responded well,' Wiggins said. 'We knew (Friday) night was not how we play. We all know we're better than that.'

Giveaways were an issue when these teams met in Minneapolis on Nov. 10, with the Hornets scoring 22 points off 22 turnovers in a 104-95 victory. The Timberwolves did limit Walker to 10 points on 4-of-12 shooting despite playing without Wiggins and Ricky Rubio.

Charlotte has won four straight in the series and is 9-2 at home against Minnesota since re-joining the NBA in 2004-05.

Preview: Grizzlies (37-25) at Cavaliers (44-17)

Date: March 07, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

LeBron James pointed to the Cleveland Cavaliers' defensive turnaround as the reason for their comeback win over the weekend.

It was the type of stingy play that has the Cavaliers back on track during a four-game homestand, which they close Monday night against the Memphis Grizzlies.

Cleveland (44-17) seemed like it might lose for the fourth time in seven games Saturday when it faced an 18-point deficit in the first quarter against Boston, which shot 60 percent for a 35-22 lead after 12 minutes.

However, the Cavaliers regrouped and held the Celtics to 68 points on 41.8 percent shooting in the final three periods on the way to a 120-103 win.

"I like the fact that we took the challenge, took the hit, the biggest hit that they could give us, and responded the best way we know how, by defending and sharing the ball," James said.

When meeting that criteria, Cleveland is solid this season. The Cavs are 21-3 when holding opponents to 96 points or fewer and 29-3 when finishing with at least 22 assists - both of which they did in the first two games of their homestand.

Cleveland has rebounded from three losses in four games by winning all three at Quicken Loans Arena to improve to 27-5 there.

After a 100-96 win over Indiana last Monday, Cleveland held Washington to 39.5 percent shooting in Friday's 108-83 victory - its sixth in the last nine games holding opponents to fewer than 100 points.

The Cavaliers' defensive prowess carries over to its recent history in this series. Memphis (37-25) has averaged just 85.3 points in three straight losses - Mike Conley has been held to 9.7 per game - and 93.2 in 15 games dating to February 2008.

Its latest offensive struggles came in a 106-76 home loss on Oct. 28. James scored only 12 points, but eight Cleveland players finished with at least nine. Nobody on Memphis scored more than a dozen as the Grizzlies shot 35.4 percent.

The Cavaliers have won nine of the last 10 games in this series in Cleveland.

Memphis has won seven of its last 10 games, but its last two losses came to lowly Phoenix. The latest was Sunday's 109-100 home defeat as the Grizzlies shot just 40 percent.

The Suns are the only team to score more than 100 points in the Grizzlies' last six games, doing it twice.

'I didn't have a good game making shots, and we've got to get better,' Zach Randolph said. 'We've been playing good, but (it) was just one of those nights.'

Randolph had picked up the slack inside since Marc Gasol's season ended, averaging 18.2 points as the Grizzlies went 7-2 in their first nine games without him.

However, Randolph made only 3 of 10 shots for six points Sunday, his lowest-scoring output in 33 games since Dec. 19.

Memphis continues to battle through health issues as starting center Chris Andersen did not return Sunday after injuring his left shoulder in the second quarter. The Grizzlies have played eight games without Tony Allen and four without Brandan Wright due to knee injuries.

Coach Dave Joerger said Allen could return Monday, while there is no timetable for Wright. It is unclear how serious Andersen's injury is.

Preview: Spurs (53-9) at Pacers (33-30)

Date: March 07, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

With a spectacular return, Manu Ginobili played a major role in keeping short-handed San Antonio perfect at home. He'll next try to help the Spurs extend their longest road win streak in two seasons.

San Antonio seeks a seventh consecutive victory away from home and ninth in row overall Monday night against the Indiana Pacers.

Ginobili scored a season-high 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting in 15-plus minutes Saturday in a 104-94 victory against Sacramento after missing 12 games following testicular surgery.

"I felt great," he said. "(The performance) was very unexpected. Of course, I'm happy. Besides the stat sheet, I felt explosive. I wasn't sore. I was free. I played in a good mood. That was the main thing."

Kawhi Leonard had team highs of 25 points and 13 rebounds for San Antonio (53-9), which improved to 30-0 at home and extended its franchise-record start through 62 games despite resting starters Tim Duncan and Danny Green. LaMarcus Aldridge also sat out because of migraine headaches.

The Spurs still kept up their recent second-half defensive intensity. They've allowed an average of 36.7 points after halftime in three games this month and gave up 13 points in the third quarter to Sacramento.

"The last three games our second halves have been really good defensively," coach Gregg Popovich said.

The Spurs will next try to win seven straight on the road for the first time since March 4-31, 2014. They've won their last seven games in Indiana and 15 of 16 overall meetings.

A 106-92 victory in San Antonio on Dec. 21 was their fourth in a row in the series. Leonard, who is averaging 27.3 points in his last four games, led the way with 24 points in the last matchup and helped keep Pacers leading scorer Paul George to a season-low seven on 1-of-14 shooting - the worst performance of his career when attempting at least 10 shots.

A night after scoring 35 in Charlotte, George had 38 in a 100-99 victory against Washington on Saturday, including the go-ahead free throws with three seconds left. Indiana finished 2-2 on its trip to maintain its slim hold on one of the Eastern Conference's final playoff spots.

"It's just to build off of this, watch tape, see what we can do better with, and there is a lot of stuff we could improve on," George said. "We didn't play well at all. It's just great that we got the win."

Indiana has lost three of four at home and will seek to avoid a season-high third consecutive defeat on its own floor. The Pacers, 18-11 at home, haven't defeated the Spurs in Indianapolis since a 100-99 victory April 1, 2007.

Indiana is hoping to get a little more help with C.J. Miles trying to work his way back from a strained left calf. Miles, averaging 12.0 points, has missed the past eight contests but was a game-time decision before Saturday's win.

San Antonio forward David West will make his return to Indiana, where he played from 2011-15. West, averaging 6.9 points, had 12 - two shy of matching his season high - in the win over Sacramento.

Preview: Kings (25-36) at Pelicans (23-38)

Date: March 07, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

Injury concerns continue to pile up for the New Orleans Pelicans and Sacramento Kings, stacking more doubt onto what would be an already unlikely postseason climb for each.

While the nicked-up Kings hope to snap a four-game skid in this series Monday night, the host Pelicans look to end their own four-game slide as they start life without one of their top scorers.

New Orleans (23-38) has lost four straight and is 1-5 since Anthony Davis scored 59 points in a 111-106 win at Detroit on Feb. 21 - its final victory of a 4-1 stretch that seemed to briefly ignite postseason aspirations.

Those have fizzled as the Pelicans have slipped to 12th place in the Western Conference, two games back of the 10th-place Kings (25-36).

While Davis is averaging 19.4 points since the league's top-scoring game this season, missing one contest with a right foot injury, the roster continues to crumble around him.

The biggest blow came in Saturday's 106-94 loss to Utah when Eric Gordon left in the first half with a fractured right ring finger just eight days after returning from the same injury.

Gordon averaged 22.7 points in his first three contests back from a 16-game absence, but coach Alvin Gentry speculated he could miss another 6-8 weeks, likely ending his season.

One of the only offensive positives last week for New Orleans was Gordon. The Pelicans shot 40.2 percent for an average of 91.7 points in three losses, the final two dropping them to 16-15 at home.

"We've just got to keep believing and keep staying together," Davis said. "This is not a time where we start falling apart. We've got to come closer and keep fighting and whatever happens, happens."

While 7-footer Omer Asik returned against Utah after missing five games with a right ankle sprain, it came just two days after 7-footer Alexis Ajinca was ruled out indefinitely with a fractured sternum.

Gentry said he will likely start point guard Jrue Holiday for the first time since early December, filling one of the guard spots left vacant by Gordon. Holiday has averaged 20.5 points in 11 games since Feb. 8.

Point guard Rajon Rondo is an injury report all by himself for Sacramento, which has lost five of six and is 5-13 since January's season-high five-game winning streak.

Rondo had nine points and eight assists in Saturday's 104-94 road loss to the Spurs, playing 36 minutes through a right ankle sprain, sprained right thumb and turf toe.

Three days after going scoreless for six minutes in Wednesday's 104-98 loss at Memphis, Sacramento went without a point for 5 1/2 minutes to open the second half against San Antonio - which played without LaMarcus Aldridge, Tim Duncan and Danny Green.

The loss dropped the Kings to 11-20 away from home.

'There have been a lot of teams disappointed on this court,' coach George Karl said.

While Rudy Gay played through a right shoulder sprain, Kostas Koufos (food poisoning) and Seth Curry (right foot sprain) sat out.

Rondo and Gay are probable for Monday, while Curry is questionable.

New Orleans is guaranteed another matchup against DeMarcus Cousins, who has averaged 30.3 points, 15.5 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 2.8 blocks the last four games of this series - including Pelicans' wins of 109-97 at Sacramento on Jan. 13 and 114-105 in New Orleans on Jan. 28.

Davis finished with 24 points and 10 rebounds the first meeting but missed the second with a concussion. Ryan Anderson matched a career high with 36 points in the Pelicans' home win.

Preview: Bucks (26-37) at Bulls (31-30)

Date: March 07, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

In 12 games without Jimmy Butler, Chicago fell out of the Eastern Conference playoff picture. In one with him back, it's returned to the No. 8 spot and started to ease some of the stress of the unnerving fall.

The climb back toward more comfortable ground continues Monday night as the Bulls host Milwaukee, and Butler's been particularly effective against the Bucks this season.

Butler's first game back from a sprained left knee was Saturday's 108-100 home win over Houston with the guard contributing 24 points and 11 rebounds. The 3-9 span without the defensive standout had the Bulls (31-30) allowing 109.7 points per game with teams shooting 39.7 percent from 3-point range.

"Obviously, you see the impact Jimmy has because of his ability to make life difficult for the elite wing players in this league," coach Fred Hoiberg told the team's official website. "... He gives you that great physical presence out there and stays in front of guys and bodies up. Offensively, he's a guy who can flat out get you a basket and get you to the free-throw line and get you some points."

It also marked the return of Nikola Mirotic, who had missed 16 games because of a complicated bout with appendicitis. Pau Gasol, who had 28 points and 17 rebounds, noted that there's plenty of time left to re-ascend the East, but it has to happen now with five games separating the Bulls from home-court advantage in the first round.

"We have 21 games to play, a quarter of the season," Gasol said. "It's a lot of games to play, but now our margin of error is gone. We've just got to play with a little more consistency that we did tonight with the same type of energy and competitiveness and go after every single win."

It should help that everyone is back who's coming back. When Butler was healthy, Mike Dunleavy wasn't, so the two played together for the first time this season Saturday. Joakim Noah is out for the season, so this is as close to a full roster as the Bulls will have.

Perhaps diminished in Butler's return is the fact that backcourt mate Derrick Rose has shot at least 50 percent in six straight games interrupted by his own injury issues, averaging 21.3 points.

"I don't ever think we are going to lose," Butler said. "As long as we're confident in each other we'll be fine. It helped me a lot having Mike to space the floor and Doug (McDermott) as confident as he is now, I think it helps everybody. Offense is always there, but we need the defense and rebounding. We won. That's all I'm worried about."

That hasn't been a problem in Chicago against the Bucks (26-37). The teams have split two games thus far with the home team winning each, and the Bulls have won the last four meetings in Chicago while holding the Bucks to 88.5 points per game. Butler has reached 30 points in both games this season while totaling 16 assists.

Milwaukee ended a 2-3 homestand with Sunday's 104-96 loss to Oklahoma City while shooting 3 of 19 from 3-point range. However, the forward duo of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jabari Parker each had 26 points.

Antetokounmpo notched a triple-double with 12 rebounds and 10 assists, and he's averaged 23.3 points, 10.8 rebounds and 9.0 assists in his last four games. All three of his career triple-doubles have come in his last seven games, and he scored 29 points on 10-of-14 shooting in a 106-101 home win over the Bulls on Jan. 12. Parker has averaged 24.0 points in his last four.

"When you look at Oklahoma City, they're veteran guys who have gone through the process that Giannis and Jabari are going through," coach Jason Kidd said. "We can take that path because those two are both pretty talented. I think Giannis and Jabari can do that."

Preview: Clippers (40-21) at Mavericks (33-30)

Date: March 07, 2016 8:30 PM EDT

The Los Angeles Clippers have taken to firing up 3-pointers at a pretty eye-catching rate lately with varying results, but they might want to keep with the habit for one more game.

Teams have been doing that against Dallas with plenty of frequency, and the outcomes are negative for the Mavericks more often than not.

Dallas begins a three-game homestand Monday night hoping to avoid a three-game losing streak while the Clippers need a win to dodge consecutive losses for the first time since before Christmas.

The Clippers (40-21) haven't lost consecutive games in 2 1/2 months - which is surprising considering Blake Griffin has only played once in that span - going 24-8 since a three-game skid from Dec. 18-21.

Three of those losses have come in the last seven games with Los Angeles attempting an average of 31.7 shots from beyond the arc, which is higher than any team's season mark. But they've won once in the last six games they've attempted 30 or more. That includes Saturday's 107-97 home loss to Atlanta after being limited to 42 second-half points.

"We just let them back in it," said Chris Paul, who has averaged 24.6 points and 11.6 assists with eight double-doubles in his last nine games. "I had some bad turnovers, and we just didn't have it tonight. Low energy. It's too late in the season to have letdowns like the one we had. That can't happen."

It did the last time out against the Mavericks with Los Angeles building an eight-point lead after one quarter only to be held to 19 points in the second of a 118-108 Dallas win on Nov. 11. Dirk Nowitzki had 31 points on 11-of-14 shooting and 5 of 6 from beyond the arc, and Paul was held to 11 points on 2 of 11. In his last three games against Dallas, Paul has averaged 10.3 points and 7.7 assists while shooting 37.0 percent.

The teams have split two games this season with the home side winning each, and the Mavericks (33-30) have taken the last two played in Dallas by an total of 40 points while shooting 58.1 percent.

Of the nine teams yielding at least 25 3-point attempts per game, the Mavericks' 33.7 percent opponent mark is the lowest, but it's not taking a ton of success from deep for teams to beat them. When opponents put up at least 25 3s and make more than a third of them, Dallas is 7-13.

One of those was Sunday's 116-114 overtime loss in Denver after D.J. Augustin's 3 tied the game with 29 seconds remaining in the extra period.

"You know, we've got to lead the league in being up three and catching 3 balls," Nowitzki told the team's official website after finishing with 30 points and hitting 5 of 8 from long range. "You know, we're a veteran team, and we don't show it lately down the stretch. If you're up three, you've got to protect the 3-point line, and we haven't been doing a good job. And when you leave yourself open to that, it goes to OT and anything is possible."

Dallas has shot 50.1 percent on a five-game stretch, all against under-.500 teams, but has only a 3-2 record to show for it. The Mavericks have won one of their last seven games against teams above that mark and are 4-10 against the five teams leading them in the Western Conference - Golden State, San Antonio, Oklahoma City, the Clippers and Memphis.

Los Angeles is 4-6 against the other teams in that top six.

Preview: Magic (27-34) at Warriors (55-6)

Date: March 07, 2016 10:30 PM EDT

Raise your hand if you saw that one coming.

After a shocking road loss to the Western Conference's worst team, the Golden State Warriors hope to rebound by breaking the NBA record for consecutive home wins Monday night against the Orlando Magic - who a suddenly cold Stephen Curry torched less than two weeks ago.

It wasn't just the result of Sunday's 112-95 loss at the Los Angeles Lakers that opened eyes, it was the way it unfolded for Golden State (55-6).

Curry and Klay Thompson made a combined 1 of 18 3-pointers, and the Warriors finished without a 20-point scorer for the first time since a Nov. 28 win over Sacramento - though six players scored in double figures in that game while Curry and Thompson were the only two this time around.

Curry finished with 18 points on 6-of-20 shooting, ending his five-game run of 30-point performances while missing nine of 10 3-pointers. Thompson had 15 on 7 of 20.

The Warriors' 4-for-30, 13.3-percent showing from long range was their worst since making 2 of 16 in a loss at Houston on Dec. 6, 2013. The NBA's top-scoring team shot 40.2 percent overall, committed 20 turnovers and allowed its sixth straight opponent to shoot better than 45 percent.

The result was the end of a seven-game win streak while a wrench was thrown in Golden State's quest to break Chicago's 1995-96 72-10 mark.

The Warriors can win their 45th straight home game on Monday, breaking the Bulls' record that ran from March 30, 1995-April 4, 1996.

'We got what we deserved,' coach Steve Kerr said. 'I joke with Steph all the time that this team is full of millennials, and millennials can't focus, so we looked like millennials today. ... But every team is going to have a tough time being locked in for 82 games. It's hard.'

Though the players largely echoed Kerr's sentiment about speed bumps in a long season - with Curry and Draymond Green each saying "it happens" - the Warriors did schedule a shootaround ahead of Monday's game, their first prior to the second game of a back-to-back.

Maybe to make sure another monumental upset isn't on the agenda.

Sunday's game was the first in NBA history in which a team with a winning percentage above .900 played a team below .200 after 60 games. Orlando (27-34) hasn't experienced woes like the Lakers' this season as a whole, but its 8-21 mark since Jan. 1 is one of the league's worst.

Another upset is far less likely at Oracle Arena, where the Warriors play 15 of their final 21 games.

The Magic are 10-18 away from home, and they will have to deal with Curry 11 days after he dropped 51 points on them in a 130-114 Golden State win - the Warriors' fifth straight in this series.

Curry made 20 of 27 shots and 10 of 15 3s to become the seventh player to hang 50 points on the Magic - and first since LeBron James went for 51 in February 2011.

Winning in Oakland seems like a tall task for the Magic after they supplied Phoenix with its first road win in nearly three months with Friday's ugly 102-84 loss. Orlando shot 34.7 percent against one of the NBA's worst defensive teams, and it sits four games back of Chicago and Detroit for the East's eighth playoff spot.

"It is very disappointing," coach Scott Skiles said. "It is a game we had to have.'

Victor Oladipo sat out with a lower-back contusion, but he is expected to return Monday.

Golden State is being cautious with Andre Iguodala (left hamstring tightness), and there is a chance he sits Monday for the third time in four games.
