NFL's biggest betting mismatches: Week 13
By MONTY ANDREWS

Each week, Monty Andrews breaks down some of the underlying mismatches in the NFL, giving you an inside edge when handicapping the schedule and setting your daily fantasy lineup.

Indianapolis Colts at New York Jets (+2, 49)

Jets' punting problems vs. Colts' elite kicking game

Vegas is expecting the Monday nighter between the Jets and Colts to be a close one, with the Jets boasting a solid run defense, the Colts featuring a high-octane pass attack and neither team all that proficient at preventing points through the air. Much of the focus in this one will be on whether Andrew Luck can thrive after missing last week due to injury - but if field position winds up playing a role, the biggest factor could be the significant advantage Indianapolis has in the kicking department.

The Jets and Arizona Cardinals boasted the worst average yards per punt a season ago (36.2), and New York hasn't shown much of an improvement in 2016. It enters Week 13 ranked 29th in yards per punt (38.1), ahead of only the Jacksonville Jaguars (37.8), Washington Redskins (37.4) and Cardinals (36.4). Seventh-round pick Lachlan Edwards has pinned foes inside their own 20-yard line just 16 times in 52 punts this season, a rate that ranks among the league's worst.

Indianapolis punter Pat McAfee has been considerably better. The 29-year-old social media dynamo is averaging an absurd 50.1 yards per attempt, easily the best mark in the NFL. He's a major reason the Colts rank third league-wide in net yards per punt attempt at 43.1, nearly 1 1/2 yards better than the mark they posted in 2015. All those extra yards could have a major impact on what is anticipated to be one of the closest contests of the week.

Preview: Colts (5-6) at Jets (3-8)

Date: December 05, 2016 8:30 PM EDT

The Indianapolis Colts hope Andrew Luck can return from a concussion and signs are pointing he will play Monday night against the New York Jets.

Regardless of who the quarterback is, Indianapolis knows there is little margin of error and the visit to MetLife Stadium represents a must-win situation.

The good news for the Colts is Luck participated in Wednesday's practice with no restrictions and said he felt great.

Luck suffered a concussion when the Titans 314-pound defensive tackle Austin Johnson landed on top of him in a Nov. 20 game after recording a sack -- one of the 36 opponents have recorded against him this season.

At 5-6, the Colts are just behind the Houston Texans (6-5) and Tennessee Titans (6-6) in a competitive AFC South race. The Colts own the head-to-head tiebreaker with the Titans but lost in overtime to Houston, which they visit next week.

"To have opportunities to go out and try to win a football game and get a little closer to your goal, yeah, that's absolutely special," Luck said. "It's all about focus on this game because if you don't take care of business this week it's a moot point."

"Well I think the margin for error is obviously shrinking, but I think that, you know, we're still in the hunt," Indianapolis general manager Ryan Grigson said. "There's, again, if you look through all the records in the league right now, I mean, the league, the way it's set up, it's beyond parity."

Of course those things might become irrelevant for the Colts if they lose to the Jets. It remains likely Luck could start but as of Wednesday, he was still in the concussion protocol and if he misses more time down the stretch it will be the second straight season the Colts were without Luck late in the season.

"Yeah, you want to have all your guys out there and certainly Andrew is a guy you want to have on the field," Indianapolis coach Chuck Pagano said Wednesday. "I think everybody is excited about that. Whatever happens, this team will deal with it. It doesn't matter. They will respond to whatever the circumstances are, whatever the adversity is just like they did last year to find a way to win games and sometimes you have to do it without the guy and that is not the case right now hopefully."

Last season, Luck missed nine games with rib injuries. The Colts were 4-5 when he was lost for the season, won the first two games without him but had an inopportune three-game losing streak and wound up 8-8.

The Colts are in their current predicament because of a 1-3 start that featured close defeats to the Detroit Lions and Jacksonville Jaguars.

Indianapolis has won four of its last six games but its first game without Luck did not go well.

In the 28-7 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Nov. 24, Scott Tolzien was 22 of 36 for 205 yards.

T.Y. Hilton was limited to three catches for 54 yards before bruising his lower back. Hilton practiced Wednesday after sitting out Monday and seems likely to play.

Like the Colts, the Jets' quarterback situation is driving headlines but it has nothing to do with health. Fans are clamoring for Bryce Petty to start but Jets coach Todd Bowles said Ryan Fitzpatrick will start despite a 3-8 record.

Fitzpatrick has struggled most of this season by throwing 13 interceptions in 10 games. Fitzpatrick has completed 57.6 percent of his passes, down from his 59.6 percent completion rate last season when he had 31 touchdown passes and only 15 interceptions.

Petty started Nov. 13 and threw for 163 yards in New York's 9-6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Fitzpatrick returned to the starting job and completed 22 of 32 passes with two touchdowns in Sunday's 22-17 loss to the New England Patriots when the team opted for a conservative game plan on dump offs and short passes.

"It's not about Bryce and it's not about Fitz, it's about our team trying to win ball games," Jets coach Todd Bowles said Monday. "Right now, Fitz is our starter. He gives us a good chance to win."

Last week, Tom Brady was listed as questionable with a knee injury against the Jets. While Luck's return is not official, the Jets are preparing to face him.

"I thought he'd play," Bowles said. "They hadn't played since Thursday so they had a lot of days off for him to get ready to play. The challenge of facing him - he's another great quarterback.

"He's big, he's tall (and) he can run with the football, very intelligent, throws a great deep ball, can scramble and get out of the grass because of his size. You think you can run him down but he's pretty quick and pretty nimble for a big guy and he's always looking downfield to throw the ball so we have our hands full."

The Jets have done well in two wins against Luck. In those meetings, Luck has completed 43 of 81 passes for 530 yards with one touchdown, five interceptions. He also has been sacked four times and has a career 52.0 passer rating against New York.

Last season, New York recorded a 20-7 victory in Indianapolis by forcing five turnovers in a Monday night game. Cornerback Darrelle Revis had an interception and recovered two fumbles but this year Revis has continued a slide that began late last season and included him allowing two touchdowns and four completions for 41 yards last week according to Pro Football Focus.

Monday Night Football Predictions: Indianapolis Colts at New York Jets Odds & Picks
by Alan Matthews

Not a great Monday night matchup this week as both the Colts (5-6) and Jets (3-8) have disappointed this season after both just missed out on the playoffs in 2015. The good news is that the final three MNF games of the 2016 season look pretty interesting and all include at least one likely playoff team.

I think it's ridiculous that an NFL coach would get fired after just two seasons, but that could be the case for the Jets' Todd Bowles if New York ends up 3-13, which is quite possible. Bowles was the toast of the NFL entering Week 17 last season with New York at 10-5 and looking good for a playoff spot. But the Jets were upset in Buffalo (by Bowles predecessor Rex Ryan) in the regular-season finale to miss out on a playoff spot.

That negative momentum has carried over into this season. Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has regressed in a huge way (if you didn't see that coming, shame on you), and while the defense has been good it hasn't been great as was expected. At this point, it behooves the Jets to play second-year QB Bryce Petty to see what he has and simply lose out to ensure a Top 5 pick. There's no way that Fitz is back next year, and either Petty or current rookie Christian Hackenberg figures to start unless the team adds a veteran stop-gap like a Jay Cutler or Colin Kaepernick.

As for the Colts, they are pretty much a mess everywhere on the roster other than at quarterback with Andrew Luck. GM Ryan Grigson ruined the chance to build a Super Bowl team around Luck while he was still a relatively low-paid rookie. That all ended this past summer when Luck got his mega-extension. If the Colts miss the playoffs again, I don't see how owner Jim Irsay can keep Grigson and/or Coach Chuck Pagano even though everyone said that after last season and Irsay stupidly gave both extensions. It's only money, and Irsay can afford to eat those deals. Many top coaches would want this job because of Luck.

The good news for mediocre Indy is that a division title is still very possible with how bad the AFC South is. The Colts are one full game behind Houston (6-5), and can you trust the Texans to win anything at this point with Brock Osweiler under center? The main threat in the South might be Tennessee (6-6), which is off this week. After this game, Indy hosts Houston, visits Minnesota and Oakland and hosts Jacksonville. So that's probably 2-2. Would 8-8 be enough for the division? It might be when tiebreakers are factored in -- and the Colts swept the Titans.

Colts at Jets Betting Story Lines

I previewed the Colts' Thanksgiving night home game against Pittsburgh last week and was big time on the Steelers at -8 and under the total of 50 because Luck was out with a concussion. Sure enough, the Colts lost 28-7 behind backup QB Scott Tolzien. He was 22-for-36 for 205 yards, a TD and two picks -- about what you would expect. Tolzien actually was better than his numbers indicated as Colts receivers had three key drops, including one in the end zone by Phillip Dorsett. The Colts' 23 drops are tied with Philadelphia and just one behind the NFL leader, Detroit.

The only way Tolzien sees the field on Monday is if Luck gets hurt again as he's expected to play after practicing in full Wednesday. Certainly the extra few days off can only help him. Also likely back this week is safety Clayton Geathers, who was out on Turkey Day with a concussion. Center Ryan Kelly left the Steelers game after three snaps with a shoulder injury but he should play.

The Jets always get fired up to face the hated Patriots and New York played about as well as it could have defensively in Sunday' s 22-17 home loss. New York led by one with fewer than five minutes left but allowed Tom Brady to lead a long touchdown drive. A 2-point conversion by the Pats was originally ruled good on the field but overturned on replay. So that gave New York a shot to win with a TD, but Fitzpatrick was strip-sacked on 2nd-and-5 at the New York 30 and that was that. He actually had a solid game, completing 22-for-32 for 269 yards two TDs and, for once, no picks. There's still no reason not to play Petty, however, over the NFL's lowest-rated QB.

This is the second Jets' Monday night game of the season and like here they entered that one on a three-game losing streak. The Jets played terribly n Week 6 at Arizona, Bowles' former team, in a 28-3 loss. New York also played at Indianapolis on a Monday in Week 2 last year and won 20-7. New York forced five turnovers, with Darrelle Revis picking off a pass and recovering two fumbles. Luck is 0-2 in his career vs. the Jets.

Colts at Jets Betting Odds and Trends

Indianapolis is a 1-point favorite (-120) with a total of 49. On the moneyline, the Colts are -128 and Jets +108. Just one alternate line as of now: Colts -2 (-110). Indy is 5-5-1 against the spread (2-2-1 on the road) and 7-4 "over/under" (5-0 on road). New York is 4-7 ATS (2-3 at home) and 5-5-1 O/U (2-2-1 at home).

The Colts are 9-2 ATS in their past 11 road games vs. teams with a losing home record. They are 10-4 ATS in their past 14 on Monday. New York has covered 10 of its past 13 in December. The under is 21-5 in Indy's past 26 after a double-digit loss at home. The under is 4-0 in New York's past four on Monday. It's 8-3 in its past 11 in December. The Colts are 1-5 ATS in the past six meetings.

Colts at Jets Betting Prediction

This matchup tests one rule I usually live by: take the team with the vastly superior quarterback if there is one. And there's no doubt that's the Colts here. But the Jets are better on the offensive line and at running back as well as everywhere on the defense. And they are at home. It looks to be rather chilly on Monday night in East Rutherford, with lows around freezing. That's more Jets weather. So New York is the pick. Go under the total.

KEY STAT: Chievo have won just one of their last seven league fixtures

EXPERT VERDICT: Genoa have been finding it tough on their travels – losing their last three Serie A away fixtures – but can pick up a point against Chievo in Verona. Confidence will be sky-high in the Genoa camp after the 3-1 win at home to Juventus but they will have to be respectful of mid-table Chievo, who are only a point below them.

EXPERT VERDICT: Sociedad are shaping up as genuine contenders for Champions League qualification and can continue their rise by defeating Deportivo at the Riazor. Sociedad were unlucky to draw 1-1 at home to Barca last week and are playing well enough to see off lowly Depor, who are winless in seven.

KEY STAT: Bologna have not won any of their last 13 away games

EXPERT VERDICT: Udinese are having another difficult season and may have to settle for a share of the spoils against fellow strugglers Bologna. Neither side are likely to be relegated due to the dreadful results of the bottom three (Pescara, Crotone and Palermo) but neither are likely finish in the top half. Udinese are bidding to avoid a third straight defeat while Bologna are winless on the road.

EXPERT VERDICT: Last month’s home draw with Paris St-Germain has left Arsenal contemplating another last-16 Champions League tie against one of the favourites for the tournament, but they should still go out on a high in Basel. EXPERT VERDICT: Manchester City’s 3-3 draw at Parkhead was one of the best games of the Champions League group stages, but while life should be more comfortable on their own patch, the visitors will be confident that they can make their mark. City are smarting after their defeat to Chelsea and Celtic love to attack under Brendan Rodgers.

NHL roundup: Simmonds' 2 goals lead Flyers to win
By The Sports Xchange

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Wayne Simmonds' two goals and Steve Mason's 30 saves lifted Philadelphia to a 4-2 win Sunday over the Nashville Predators at Bridgestone Arena, the Flyers' fifth straight victory.
Both of Simmonds' markers came on the power play, giving him six with the man advantage this season.
Chris VandeVelde and Michael Raffl also scored for the Flyers.
Calle Jarnkrok and Colin Wilson scored for the Predators.

Canadiens 5, Kings 4 (SO)
LOS ANGELES -- Max Pacioretty scored two goals and an assist and Alexander Radulov registered a goal and two assists as Montreal defeated Los Angeles in a shootout.
Paul Byron scored the decisive goal in the fourth round of the shootout and Andrew Shaw also scored the Canadiens in regulation.
Trevor Lewis, Drew Doughty, Nick Shore and Jeff Carter scored for the Kings.

Red Wings 4, Islanders 3 (OT)
NEW YORK -- Danny DeKeyser scored 1:02 into overtime Sunday night as Detroit edged New York at Barclays Center.
Mike Green scored twice -- and had a third goal, a potential go-ahead tally in the third period, overturned due to goalie interference on teammate Luke Glendening -- and Henrik Zetterberg added a goal for the Red Wings. Petr Mrazek made 32 saves.
Anders Lee, Johnny Boychuk and Josh Bailey scored for the Islanders, who had their three-game winning streak snapped. Jaroslav Halak recorded 31 saves.

Hurricanes 1, Lightning 0 (OT)
RALEIGH, N.C. -- Phillip Di Giuseppe's first goal of the season gave Carolina an overtime victory against Tampa Bay at PNC Arena.
With teammate Viktor Stalberg creating a distraction in front of the net, Di Giuseppe delivered a shot from the right side that beat Tampa Bay's Ben Bishop 1:29 into the extra period. The left winger was in only his fourth game since being recalled from the minor leagues. Bishop, playing for the third time in four days, finished with 29 saves.
Cam Ward, who hadn't played in two of the team's previous four games, picked up the shutout with 30 saves as the Hurricanes extended their home-ice winning streak to six games.

Jets 2, Blackhawks 1
CHICAGO -- Andrew Copp scored the go-ahead goal late in the third period, and Winnipeg held on for a win over Chicago.
Bryan Little also scored for the Jets, who earned their second road win in as many nights.
Artemi Panarin scored the Blackhawks lone goal as their offense continued to struggle without injured captain Jonathan Toews.

Wild 2, Oilers 1 (OT)
EDMONTON, Alberta -- Mikko Koivu scored the winner at 3:11 of overtime, giving Minnesota a victory over Edmonton.
Koivu busted into the Oilers zone, danced around goalie Jonas Gustavsson and deposited a backhanded effort.
Wild goalie Devan Dubnyk, who played 171 games as an Oiler, made 28 saves to earn the win.

Flames 8, Ducks 3
CALGARY, Alberta -- Johnny Gaudreau had a goal and an assist in his return to action as Calgary trounced Anaheim at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
Playing left wing on a line with center Sam Bennett and right winger Alex Chiasson, Gaudreau scored on his opening shift after missing the past 10 games with a fractured finger.
Bennett and Chiasson finished with a goal and two assists each to give the line eight points.

Preview: Senators (15-8) at Penguins (15-7)

Date: December 05, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

PITTSBURGH -- It's been about a month since Pittsburgh Penguins coach Mike Sullivan had a talk with winger Phil Kessel. Sullivan wanted to see Kessel's wicked shot more to, he hoped, increase his scoring.

The Ottawa Senators, who visit PPG Paints Arena on Monday night, will have a chance to see the results, although they might not be thrilled about that.

Over the past six games, Kessel has scored four goals to double his total from the first six weeks of the season. He has been contributing all season -- he has 16 assists and ranks third on the team with 24 points -- but seems to be getting back to the sniper's role that has defined his career.

Sullivan noted that when Kessel is "on the puck, he's a threat. He's got such a great shot, whether it's off the rush, underneath the hash marks. ... We have to be a team that can generate offense different ways."

Kessel has 29 shots over the past eight games. Saturday, he scored twice in a 5-3 win over Detroit, his first multi-goal game of the season.

Those two goals came off of slick passes by Evgeni Malkin and Carl Hagelin, and Kessel was quick to deflect most of the credit to those two, and in "hockeyese."

"Geno sauced me a good one on the first one, and Haggy made a great backdoor for a tap-in," Kessel said.

Translation: Malkin found him with a cross-ice saucer pass for a one-timer, and Hagelin's pass cut across the grain.

The Penguins (15-7-3) have won two games in a row for the first time in almost a month, since Nov. 6 and 8, but they remain neck and neck and neck with the Rangers and Washington as the three jostle for the Metropolitan Division lead.

The Senators (15-8-2), meanwhile, beat Florida 2-0 Saturday to break a two-game losing streak. The win brought them within two points of Montreal atop the Atlantic Division -- although the Canadiens then picked up another two points Sunday in a shootout win against Los Angeles.

Ottawa coach Guy Boucher sensed some fatigue after the two straight losses, so he called off Friday's practice, and Saturday's morning skate was a lightly-attended optional.

"We needed to give the guys a rest," Boucher said. "We were definitely hoping to have more energy, and that's exactly what happened. You saw that right off the bat. Our guys were skating hard. They were ready."

Now the Senators will need to be ready to start a four-game, nine-day road trip that heads to the West Coast following the game against the Penguins.

With goaltender Craig Anderson on leave from Ottawa to be with his wife as she battles cancer, Pittsburgh could see a familiar face in goal for Ottawa on Monday.

Mike Condon began the season with the Penguins while Matt Murray recovered from a broken thumb. He played just one period. When Murray returned, Pittsburgh traded Condon to the Senators.

Condon is 3-1-1 with Ottawa, including two shutouts -- the second one a 24-save job Saturday against Florida. It's quite a run.

"I don't really look too far in the past or too far in the future," Condon said. "I'm just trying to keep the game simple and just stay in the moment."

Preview: Coyotes (8-11) at Blue Jackets (14-5)

Date: December 05, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

Nearly two months into the season, perhaps it's time to anoint the Columbus Blue Jackets as the biggest surprise team in the NHL.

Looking for a season high-tying fourth straight win -- and the 500th in franchise history -- the Blue Jackets wrap up their season series with the Arizona Coyotes on Monday night at Nationwide Arena.

Since entering the league as an expansion team in 2000, Columbus (14-5-4) reached the postseason twice and was eliminated in the opening round each time. While there are still almost 60 games to play in the regular season, the Blue Jackets appear to have the pieces to get in the playoffs and to stick around for a while.

"We want to earn respect, because we don't have any right now," Columbus coach John Tortorella told the team's official website in November.

The Blue Jackets' play is turning heads. Columbus' five regulation losses are the fewest in the league, and it is averaging 3.13 goals per game -- just barely ahead of the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins and trailing only the New York Rangers.

The Blue Jackets, third in the Metropolitan Division, scored 15 goals in a three-game winning streak over Arizona, and averaged nearly four goals per game while winning six of the last seven at home against the Coyotes.

The teams met for the first time this season on Saturday night in Arizona. Boone Jenner scored 13 seconds in and Columbus fired a franchise-record 60 shots on goal through overtime before coming away with a 3-2 shootout win.

Jenner scored in each of his last two games, giving him four in 23 contests. He had 11 goals through 23 games last season, and finished with a career-best 30. Tortorella -- never shy about speaking his mind -- said the team needs Jenner to produce like he once did.

"We've been able to find our way here in the first quarter of the season without him being a big part of our offense," Tortorella told the Columbus Dispatch. "He's done a lot of other things. But if we can just get his offense going, then you have a little bit of balance if one of our other lines has an off night."

What Tortorella has been getting at home is balanced scoring. Four players each totaled at least 10 points in Columbus -- Cam Atkinson (15), Alexander Wennberg (12), Zach Werenski (12) and Nick Foligno (11). Scott Hartnell and Brandon Saad added nine points apiece.

Tortorella appears most grateful for Werenski, taken eighth overall in the 2015 NHL Draft.

"We have an (elite, young) defenseman, and that's a huge position in our game," Tortorella told the Columbus Dispatch. "... You're always looking for that guy. We feel very fortunate to have a guy who can run our power play at 19 years old. He has a lot to learn, but we feel very fortunate that we have him."

After Curtis McElhinney won in the desert, the Blue Jackets will likely turn to Sergei Bobrovsky in goal. With 13 wins, Bobrovsky needs two more to match the total he recorded in 37 games during an injury-plagued 2015-16 season.

Bobrovsky is 11-2-1 with a 1.96 goals-against average, a .930 save percentage and two shutouts in his last 14 games.

Arizona (8-11-4) is in the middle of a stretch of four games in six days, and will be looking to avoid its fourth straight loss. The Coyotes are last in the Pacific Division and one point ahead of Colorado Avalanche, currently at the bottom of the West.

"We're trying to be as competitive as we can," coach Dave Tippett told the Arizona Republic. "We're scratching and clawing trying to get points. We feel like we're in every game."

Mike Smith stopped a career-best 58 shots Saturday -- the third time in four games that he's faced at least 40 shots.

"Frustrating would be a good word but it's even worse than that right now," Smith said. "At some point, you'd like to see your team move forward and take steps in the right direction to start having your chance to win hockey games.

"It seems like once we take one step forward we're taking a couple back. It's tough to play like that in this league and expect to come out and win hockey games."

Smith is 1-2-1 with a 2.90 GAA and .887 save percentage over his last five games in Columbus. Coyotes captain Shane Doan said Smith is keeping the team in games.

"The last two weeks he's been in a zone," Doan said. "That's the only reason we're even remotely close to getting points or getting any kind of team success."

Doan, who scored in Saturday's loss, is on the cusp of a milestone, needing one goal to become the 93rd player in NHL history to score 400. Doan, the last of the original Winnipeg Jets after being selected seventh overall in 1995, scored a goal in two of his last three visits to Ohio, giving him nine in 26 career games there.

Preview: Sabres (9-10) at Capitals (13-7)

Date: December 05, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

WASHINGTON -- The Washington Capitals beat the Buffalo Sabres one day after Thanksgiving. There's been little worth showing thanks for the Capitals ever since while the Sabres won two of their last three.

Washington (13-7-3) lost its third straight game Saturday as Tampa Bay prevailed 2-1. The Capitals had little success against Lightning goalie Ben Bishop, who had 34 saves through overtime.

The latest setback came after a 3-0 home loss against the New York Islanders on Thursday. The Capitals are back in their building for Monday's matchup with the Sabres.

"We're looking for that real precise goal," Coach Barry Trotz told the Washington Post following Saturday's road loss. "Sometimes you've just got to simplify a little bit. Just shoot the puck. We've got some good shooters. Right now, they're a little bit dry."

The Capitals are averaging 2.52 goals, which tied them with the Islanders for 18th entering Sunday. Washington ranked second with 3.02 goals last season.

Stalwart Alex Ovechkin is among the league-leader with 12 goals, but the wing threat hasn't scored since recording a hat trick on Nov. 23 against the St. Louis Blues.

"We need to be more gritty and go in front of the net," center Nicklas Backstrom said. "Instead of all three guys trying to cycle the puck all of the time, we need at least one guy in front of the net for shots and then rebounds. I mean, that's the kind of goals that go in these days. We have to be able to go in front of the net and go to the dirty areas and create second chances."

Daniel Winnik, Marcus Johansson and Brett Connolly scored for the Capitals in the Nov. 25 win over the Sabres.

Buffalo (9-10-5) rebounded with nine combined goals in back-to-back wins before falling 2-1 Saturday against the Boston Bruins.

While the loss wasn't the desired result, the lone goal scored was something of a positive development because of who found the net.

Evander Kane, who missed time this season after suffering four cracked ribs in the season opener, scored for the first time in 13 games this campaign.

"It was just good to get the first one out of the way," Kane told the Buffalo News following the home loss. "When you have multiple games together and you don't score, being a goal-scorer that's a slump. I feel I have an opportunity to score every game, so it was just nice to get it."

The left wing had 20 goals in 65 games in 2015-16. Kane has points in three straight games.

"The one thing we keep working and urging Evander to do is shoot the puck," Sabres coach Dan Bylsma said Saturday, per the Buffalo News. "He hasn't shot the puck this year the way he normally does, and he's had opportunities to do it."

Buffalo will play without Josh Gorges for several weeks following the revelation from Bylsma that the defenseman suffered a non-displaced foot fracture after blocking a shot Thursday against the New York Rangers. Gorges, a steady part of Buffalo's rotation, sat out Saturday's loss.

Preview: Panthers (12-11) at Bruins (14-10)

Date: December 05, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

BOSTON -- Tom Rowe still hasn't had a home game as the interim coach of the Panthers. But Monday night, Rowe will be coaching a "home" game when the Panthers visit the Boston Bruins, the fifth game of a six-game road trip.

Rowe, the first American to score 30 goals in the NHL, hails from Lynn, Ma., just up the road from TD Garden. His brother is a retired police lieutenant there and his family still local.

Monday night, the Panthers bring a 1-1-1 record under Rowe into the continuation of their long trip with their new coach.

The Panthers, who lost 2-0 in Ottawa Saturday night, face a team that just won a pair of 2-1 games, at home against the Carolina Panthers in a shootout last Thursday and a regulation win at Buffalo on Saturday.

Tuukka Rask, who has been outstanding in goal for the Bruins, made a season-high 35 saves, 17 in the third period, to win at Buffalo -- after Anton Khudobin was the winner against Carolina, the first Boston victory of the season by a goalie not named Rask.

"I think every team likes to have these kind of goaltenders, and a lot of teams do, we're just fortunate enough that he's been one of those guys that whenever you slip a little bit or lose a little bit of momentum or you're having a slow start or a tough night, those guys step up and help you win some hockey games," Bruins coach Claude Julien said Saturday. "He's been like that since the start of the season and has been great."

Rask wasn't great last season, when the Bruins narrowly missed the playoffs for the second straight season. But he has been brilliant so far this year.

Entering play around the league yesterday, Rask was leading the NHL with a 1.60 goals against average, was tied for lead with 13 wins and No. 3 with a .941 save percentage.

Saturday night, coming off Rowe's first win as a coach, a 2-1 overtime decision at Detroit, the Panthers killed all seven Ottawa power plays but yielded two goals in 19 seconds and went 0-for-4 on their own power play.

"It's a tough one to swallow," said Keith Yandle.

The Bruins killed all seven Panthers power plays and Rask backstopped a 2-1 win at Florida back on Nov. 1.

Rask owned the Panthers through the years, going 16-3-1 with a 1.48 goals against average and .951 save percentage against Florida.

Roberto Luongo, who made 19 saves in the loss at Ottawa, is just 15-16-4 with a 2.45 goals against average and .926 save percentage in his regular season career against the Bruins -- but will forever be known for his struggles against Boston in the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals.

Saturday's loss broke Luongo's streak of allowing just one goal in three straight games. He is 9-7-1 with a 2.04 GAA and .929 save percentage this season. If he plays Monday, he will make his 944th NHL appearance, breaking a tie with Curtis Joseph for fifth place on the NHL's all-time list.

Luongo's backup, James Reimer, is 8-3-4 with 3.05/.896 this season and is 7-6-3 with 2.40/.929 lifetime against the Bruins.

Both teams come into this game having trouble scoring. Not counting shootout winners, the Panthers scored none goals in their last seven games. The Bruins scored four in the last three, even though both David Krejci and David Backes had two goals and an assist in the last four games.

The Panthers announced Sunday that Jonathan Marchessault is day-to-day after suffering a lower body injury Saturday night -- Paul Thompson recalled from the minors.

Grand Salami - December

The Grand Salami in pro hockey is decided by adding up all the goals scored in every game scheduled for that particular day. You can wager on 'over' or 'under' the Grand Salami total. The total is set by adding up all listed 'over/under' odds for each game on that particular day.

Note: The Grand Salami will have no action if any game is suspended or cancelled before the regulation time of three twenty minute periods. Also, regardless of the number of goals scored during the shoot out portion of the overtime, the final scored recorded for the game will give the winning team on more goal than its opponent based on the score at the end of regulation time.

*The majority of sportsbooks do not put out a total on the Grand Salami when there is only one game on the card. For tracking purposes, we will continue to show the 'over/under' for goals and combined goals scored on days with just one game.

NBA roundup: Another Westbrook triple-double
By The Sports Xchange

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Russell Westbrook collected his fifth consecutive triple-double in leading the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 101-92 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday at the Chesapeake Energy Arena.
Westbrook posted 28 points, 17 rebounds, 12 assists and 10 turnovers in his 10th triple-double streak of the season. His streak of five in a row is the longest of his career and the longest in the NBA since Michael Jordan posted seven straight in 1989 with the Chicago Bulls.
Thunder center Enes Kanter recorded 17 points and 10 boards. Victor Oladipo added 15 points for Oklahoma City (13-8).
Anthony Davis led the Pelicans (7-14) with 37 points, 15 rebounds and four blocked shots. Rookie Buddy Hield broke out of a slump with 16 points, all in the second half. Jrue Holiday and E'Twaun Moore each scored 10 points for New Orleans.

Magic 98, Pistons 92
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Serge Ibaka piled up 21 points, seven rebounds, four assists, four blocks and three steals, and Orlando ended a seven-game losing streak to Detroit.
Nikola Vucevic supplied 16 points and eight rebounds off the bench for the Magic, who hadn't defeated Detroit since Nov. 17, 2014. Jeff Green added 14 points, five rebounds and three, assists and D.J. Augustin contributed 12 points and three assists for Orlando.
Marcus Morris scored 16 of his team-high 21 points in the first half for the Pistons, who saw their three-game winning streak snapped. Detroit point guard Reggie Jackson had 18 points and four assists in 23 minutes in his season debut. He had been sidelined since training camp with left knee tendinitis. Andre Drummond added 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Knicks 106, Kings 98

Brandon Jennings scored a season-high 19 points, and Kristaps Porzingis contributed 15 points, 14 rebounds and four blocked shots for the Knicks, who are 9-3 at the Garden. Sacramento lost its third straight, all on the road.
DeMarcus Cousins paced the Kings with 36 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots. It marked the 10th time Cousins has poured in at least 30 points this season. He was 14 of 16 from the foul line, and he picked up his league-leading seventh technical foul. Rudy Gay added 22 points and nine rebounds for Sacramento.

Pacers 111, Clippers 102

Preview: Nuggets (7-13) at 76ers (4-16)

Date: December 05, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

Two struggling teams square off when the Philadelphia 76ers host the Denver Nuggets on Monday night.

The Sixers (4-16) have lost six straight games, while the Nuggets (7-13) have dropped five of six.

"We've got to get a 'W,'" Denver guard Will Barton gold Nuggets.com after the team opened a six-game road trip with a 105-98 loss to Utah on Saturday. "We've just got to find a way to put a complete game together."

Denver's defense is of particular concern. One night after Houston shot 50.6 percent from the floor and nailed 17 3-pointers in a 128-110 victory over the Nuggets, Utah's Gordon Hayward matched his season high of 32 points, 21 coming in a third quarter that saw the Jazz outscore Denver 33-16 to open an 82-63 lead.

"The first half and the fourth quarter, the defense was obviously there, but we've got to do it for four quarters," forward Wilson Chandler told Nuggets.com. "We've got to be able to guard the ball one-on-one."

Chandler, who comes off the bench, has scored 20 points or more in four of the past five games and leads the team with an average of 18.5 a night. Veteran forward Danilo Gallinari is averaging 16.8, and guard Emmanuel Mudiay checks in at 14.

Denver is allowing 109.5 points a game, fourth-most in the league. The Sixers are surrendering 107.8 points a night, which is sixth-most.

Philadelphia battled Boston on even terms Saturday night, only to see Celtics guard Isaiah Thomas explode for 13 of his 37 points in the fourth quarter of a 107-106 Boston victory. Thomas became the fifth point guard this season to score 30 or more against the Sixers.

"You see it time and time again with some people who come through our building," Sixers coach Brett Brown said, "and you saw it again tonight. We give him credit. He's hard to guard."

Brown was heartened, at least, by the fact that his team put up a fight, after a poor effort in Friday's 105-88 loss to Orlando.

"This group has a character I respect," he said, "in that they reload after laying eggs."

He was further encouraged by the performance of rookie forward Dario Saric, who matched his career highs of 21 points and 12 rebounds. Brown said Saric, who began the night averaging 8.7 points on 36.6-percent shooting, "was a man down there (in the low post)" while playing his best game to date.

"The last five, six games, my confidence was really low," Saric said. "This game, when you get the first easy basket or (play) good defense, after that it's easier playing."

The Sixers rested rookie center Joel Embiid and were without forward Robert Covington (knee) and guard Jerryd Bayless (wrist). Brown said it's "up in the air" as to whether any of the three will play Monday.

Denver center Nikola Jokic has missed the last two games with a sprained left wrist and guard Gary Harris has missed the last 11 with a foot injury. Neither is expected to play Monday.
