Monday Night Football Predictions: Buffalo Bills at Seattle Seahawks Odds & Pick
by Alan Matthews

This year's Monday night schedule has left plenty to be desired, but this week's matchup between Buffalo (4-4) and Seattle (4-2-1) starts a stretch where every Monday game the rest of the way looks pretty interesting as of now, other than probably Colts-Jets on Dec. 5.

Now that the Chicago Cubs have ended the longest World Series drought in baseball, can the Bills end the longest active playoff drought in the NFL? It's going to have to be the wild-card route as Buffalo is already three games behind the first-place Patriots in the AFC East and would also lose the tiebreaker as things stand.

The Bills are currently eighth in the AFC standings and thus behind three other wild-card contenders in Oakland (6-2; currently tied for AFC West lead but losing tiebreaker for now vs. Denver), Kansas City (5-2) and Tennessee (4-4). One major issue for the Bills is that the most important tiebreaker after head-to-head is record in conference, and Buffalo is just 1-4 vs. the AFC. So in that regard, this game doesn't help. Since 2000, 40 teams have reached the halfway point of their season with a .500 or below winning percentage and advanced to the playoffs, including at least one in each season. Five clubs did it last year.

Seattle leads the NFC West by two games over Arizona in the loss column, and it will be interesting to see if that initial tie between the clubs affects things. The Seahawks host Arizona in Week 16, and the winner of that could hold a crucial tiebreaker. Might this be a bit of a look-ahead game for the Seahawks? They visit New England next Sunday night in rematch of that terrific Super Bowl from two seasons ago.

Bills at Seahawks Betting Story Lines

Buffalo has followed a four-game winning streak with back-to-back losses at Miami and home to New England, scoring exactly 25 points in each. Two things have changed in those losses. First is the defense, which didn't allow more than 18 points during the winning streak. The Bills were gashed on the ground by Jay Ajayi and the Dolphins and then through the air by Tom Brady and the Patriots. Also, top running back LeSean McCoy played only briefly vs. Miami and not at all vs. the Patriots with a hamstring injury. He's not only the focal point of the Buffalo offense but when the Bills run the ball well, they eat the clock and keep their defense rested. It's not clear yet if McCoy can return this week. If not, Mike Gillislee starts again.

The Bills are really thin at receiver with No. 1 Sammy Watkins having not played since Week 2 and on injured reserve. No. 2 Robert Woods is also banged up but should play Monday. So Buffalo signed Percy Harvin this week out of retirement. He played five games for Buffalo in 2015 before being sidelined by a hip injury, which is what forced him into retirement. Harvin says he feels good, however. He used to be an electric talent but injuries have torpedoed his career. Harvin was a member of the Seahawks' Super Bowl XLVIII-winning team. Seattle, which gave up a first-round pick to Minnesota to get Harvin, traded him to the New York Jets early in the 2014 season.

One key injury to monitor for Buffalo other than McCoy is to outside linebacker Lorenzo Alexander. He left the Patriots game with a hamstring injury. Alexander, a virtual unknown outside of Buffalo entering this season, leads the NFL with a career-high nine sacks. Entering this season, Alexander had nine total sacks in 127 career games. With one Monday, he would become the first player to begin his career in 1982 or later with a career total of fewer than 10 sacks to record 10 sacks in his 10th season. Who finds these stats?

The Seahawks lost 25-20 in New Orleans last week. A Will Lutz field goal with 1:57 left forced Seattle to need a touchdown to win. Russell Wilson drove Seattle to the New Orleans 10, but his pass on the game's final play to Jermaine Kearse was caught out of bounds. Wilson is not having the season many anticipated and was 22-for-34 for 253 yards and a pick. Last year, Wilson produced 60 explosive plays (20 yards or more), fourth-most in the NFL. This season, he has 20, which ranks 17th.

Wilson's offensive line is a major problem, and I know the Seahawks were looking for help ahead of Tuesday's deadline. The Seattle running game also has disappointed, and projected No. 1 Thomas Rawls still isn't ready to return from his leg injury. You might see more of rookie C.J. Prosise going forward. Against the Saints, he ran four times for 23 yards and also was the Seahawks' leading receiver in catching for four balls for 80 yards.

Two big injuries on defense for Seattle in defensive end Michael Bennett and safety Kam Chancellor. The latter missed his third game in a row vs. New Orleans with a groin pull and Bennett sat out with a knee injury. Bennett for sure won't play here following minor surgery on Wednesday.

Bills at Seahawks Betting Odds and Trends

Seattle is a 7.5-point favorite (+115) with a total of 43.5. On the moneyline, the Seahawks are -300 and the Bills +250. On the alternate lines, Seattle is -7 (-105) and -6.5 (-125). Buffalo is 4-4 against the spread (2-2 on road) and 6-2 "over/under" (2-2 on road). Seattle is 3-4 ATS (1-2 at home) and 3-4 O/U (2-1 at home).

The Bills are 5-1-1 ATS in their past six vs. teams with a winning record. They are 1-10 ATS in their past 11 following a double-digit home loss. The Seahawks are 4-0 ATS in their past four after a loss. They are 7-2-1 in the past 10 on Monday. The under is 7-3 in Buffalo's past 10 on the road vs. teams with a winning home record. The under is 5-0 in Seattle's previous five on Monday.

Bills at Seahawks Betting Prediction

This is Buffalo's first trip to Seattle in 12 years. I don't particularly remember their last meeting, but something historic happened in the Dec. 16, 2012, game in Toronto back when the NFL played one Bills game a year there. Seattle rolled 50-17, and Wilson, then a rookie, became the first player in NFL history to have three rushing touchdowns and a touchdown pass in the first half of a game.

This could easily be the lowest-scoring Monday night game of the year. Seattle has won seven straight Monday home games and should here. Give the 6.5-point alternate line and go under.

Week 9 NFL

Bills (4-4) @ Seahawks (4-2-1)— Bills are 2-14 in game before their last 16 byes (5-4 vs spread as an underdog); they’re 4-1 this year when allowing less than 20 points, 0-3 when giving up 20+- they allowed 28-41 points in losses to Dolphins/Patriots last two weeks. Seahawks’ offense is struggling, with one offensive TD on 20 drives in last two games. Wilson is a great QB when he is mobile; he is playing hurt now, had 3 rushes for 11 yards in Superdome LW. Seattle is 23-13 in last 36 games as a home favorite, 1-2 this year; they’re 7-5 in this series, hammering Bills 50-17 in last meeting, which was in Toronto four years ago. AFC East non-divisional road underdogs are 2-5 vs spread. NFC West favorites are 3-5, 2-3 at home. Six of last seven Bills games went over total; under is 4-3 in Seattle games.

KEY STAT: Southport have lost ten of their 18 National League games

EXPERT VERDICT: Two divisions separate Fleetwood from their Lancashire counterparts Southport and that gulf in quality is likely to tell in this FA Cup clash. Fleetwood are a solid third-tier outfit these days and are decent in the final third, while National League Southport are struggling at present.

RECOMMENDATION: Fleetwood

KEY STAT: Scotland have not trailed at the break in their last three matches at Wembley

EXPERT VERDICT: England have failed to convince in their three World Cup qualifiers and are likely to make hard work of beating Scotland at Wembley. Scotland will probably get 11 men behind the ball on a regular basis and England may take a while to find a way through but eventually the extra class in the final third should tell.

KEY STAT: All four previous matches between these countries have produced under 2.5 goals

EXPERT VERDICT: Punters know all about the rise of Northern Ireland having witnessed their march to the knockout stage of Euro 2016, and now it looks like another minnow, Azerbaijan, are coming to the party. Robert Prosinecki’s men have picked up seven points from three qualifiers courtesy of 1-0 wins against San Marino and Norway and an impressive 0-0 draw in Czech Republic and they can hold the favourites.

KEY STAT: Austria are unbeaten in ten home competitive matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Ireland have made a decent start to their World Cup qualifying campaign but their chances of progressing could take a hit when they face an Austrian side with a point to prove. If Austria can recapture their Euro 2016 qualifying form then they have an excellent chance of claiming all three points.

KEY STAT: Serbia are unbeaten in their last seven matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Wales had a wonderful run through to the semi-finals of Euro 2016 but qualifying for the World Cup looks a tough ask in such a tight group. Chris Coleman welcomes back some key men who were missing from the draw against Georgia but Serbia have started well and can frustrate Wales in Cardiff.

KEY STAT: Andre Silva has scored four in four for Portugal

EXPERT VERDICT: European champions Portugal are a very warm order to beat Latvia and they should do so with the minimum of fuss. Cristiano Ronaldo is likely to cause the most problems for the Latvians but Porto’s Andre Silva has been firing in the goals for his club and could also play a significant part.

Preview: Canucks (4-7) at Islanders (4-6)

Date: November 07, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

NEW YORK -- Somebody has to win Monday night, when the New York Islanders host the Vancouver Canucks in a battle of skidding teams at Barclays Center.

The Islanders (4-6-2) lost their third straight game Saturday night, when they blew an early two-goal lead and fell to the Edmonton Oilers, 4-3, in the shootout. The Canucks (4-7-1) extended the longest losing streak in the league Saturday night, when they dropped their eighth in a row in absorbing a 6-3 defeat at the hands of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

New York and Vancouver are two of just six teams with 10 points or fewer as well as two of four teams with a losing streak as long as three games. The Detroit Red Wings have dropped five straight while the San Jose Sharks have lost three in a row.

The Islanders can at least take a little solace in the narrow nature of their losses. New York has led or been tied in the third period in six of the eight defeats, including the last two.

"We played a little resilient and we played hard and credit to the guys," Islanders head coach Jack Capuano said Saturday night. "But that's the way we're going to have to play. I think our guys know if we continue to play like that and work like that and just stay the course, good things will happen."

The Islanders' task got tougher Sunday, when the team learned its top defenseman, Travis Hamonic, will be out four-to-six weeks with a broken right thumb suffered when he blocked a shot in the first period Saturday night.

The Canucks, on the other hand, have been outscored by a whopping 28-10 during their losing streak, a stretch in which they have been shut out four times and lost by multiple goals six times.

"The only people that can change this slump right now is us," Canucks defenseman Troy Stecher said Saturday night. "And we're going to find a way to do that."

The Canucks are likely to be doubly motivated Monday following a fight-filled loss to the Maple Leafs. The fracases -- including a battle between goalie Ryan Miller and Toronto left winger Matt Martin -- took place after left winger Daniel Sedin was hit in the head by Nazem Kadri. Sedin was checked for a concussion but passed the tests.

"I like the fact that our guys stayed together," Canucks head coach Willie Desjardins said, "I think it's important that the group cares about each other."

Miller and Jacob Markstrom have alternated starts in each of the last five games, which puts Markstrom in line to play Monday night. Markstrom is 1-3-0 in four career appearances against the Islanders and took the loss the last time he opposed New York on March 1, when he made 21 saves as the Canucks fell, 3-2, at Rogers Arena.

Jaroslav Halak has started the last two games for the Islanders, so Thomas Greiss could draw the start. Greiss is 1-2-0 in three career appearances against the Canucks and earned the win on March 1, when he stopped 31 of 33 shots.

Preview: Sabres (5-4) at Bruins (6-5)

Date: November 07, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

BOSTON -- Despite serious injuries to key players, the Buffalo Sabres ran up a 4-1-2 road record to start the season.

The Boston Bruins, who missed the playoffs for a second straight year last season because of poor home play, are 1-3-0 on home ice to start the new season (6-5-0 overall).

On Monday night, when the two old Adams Division foes meet at TD Garden, Buffalo (5-4-2 overall) will be coming off a 2-1 victory at Ottawa Saturday night while the Bruins were thumped 5-2 by the New York Rangers on home ice.

Robin Lehner was outstanding in goal for the Sabres -- who lost Jack Eichel and Evander Kane early and Zach Bagosian recently -- Saturday, his 32-save performance the key to the fourth road win of the year. Last year, Buffalo, which finished dead last in the NHL, was 9-29-3 away from home.

Lehner beat his old team Saturday.

"No matter who we played today, it was a win we needed," he said after the game. "We don't want to lose two in a row. I think we can learn a few things from this game, but the way we came out in the third after our first goal and the big (penalty kill) we had, we can take some positives too."

Lehner is 4-3-1 with a 2.14 goals against average and .929 save percentage this season -- and is 3-6-3 with a 2.64 goals against average and .925 save percentage lifetime against Boston.

The Bruins, who won the last three of a four-game road trip, yielded two shorthanded goals and one power play score to suffer another home loss on Saturday. They were just 17-18-6 at home last season -- again barely missing the playoffs.

"We were feeling good about our game," said defenseman Torey Krug. "We didn't play well (but won) in Florida, but Detroit and Tampa, we played well. We wanted to use that momentum to move on into our building.

"We started out well. I thought, five-on-five, we played a pretty good game. We played fast; we were getting a majority of the chances. I thought their goaltender played well. Like I said, the power play let us down. Two goals against, no goals for, that's a big part of it. For a while now, that's been a big part of our team, that power play. Right now, we're not getting the results."

The Bruins have scored just three power play goals, while surrendering three shorthanded scores.

Tuukka Rask suffered his first loss in the Boston net in seven games this season. He didn't play well and may have tweaked the lower body injury that caused him to miss four games.

With a Tuesday date in Montreal waiting, it wouldn't be a shock to see rookie Zane McIntyre in goal for his second NHL start Monday.

The Sabres worked out at the Bruins' new practice facility Sunday. Sam Reinhart, who scored the winning goal Saturday, turned 21 and got a face full of shaving cream from teammate Marcus Foligno during the practice.

"That's Marcus for you," Reinhart told the Buffalo News. "I was kind of wrestling with (Matt) Moulson in the corner, so I didn't see it coming. It was stuck in the ear a little bit, but a shower helped."

Said Foligno: "He doesn't know what's going on around him most of the time, so it was pretty easy."

Tyler Ennis and Dmitry Kulikov both missed the Buffalo practice Sunday, but just to rest. Asked if he expects both to play Monday, coach Dan Bylsma said, "I expect them to play well."

The Bruins, who canceled Sunday practice, won three of the four games between the teams last season but the Sabres took three of a possible four points in the two games in Boston.

Preview: Lightning (7-4) at Panthers (5-6)

Date: November 07, 2016 7:30 PM EDT

SUNRISE, Fla. -- Right winger Jaromir Jagr, who at 44 is the grand old man of Florida Panthers hockey, has a groin injury and is questionable to play Monday night against the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning.

"He had a little bit of cramp in his groin," Panthers coach Gerard Gallant told the media on Sunday. "I don't think it's anything too serious. But he is sore. He's day to day."

Another issue for the Panthers is goalie Roberto Luongo, who has lost four games in a row. He has allowed 12 goals in those four losses.

The Panthers say they are not concerned about Luongo's play. But you have to wonder if the 37-year-old is starting to lose a bit off his proverbial fastball in his 18th NHL season.

Florida, which won the Atlantic Division last season, is off to a poor start with a 5-6-1 record. They are last in the Atlantic, already 10 points behind the first-place Montreal Canadiens.

The Lightning (7-4-1) have 15 points and are in second place in the Atlantic, six points behind Montreal.

Tampa Bay has played the Panthers just once this season, defeating Florida 4-3 in a shootout.

The Lightning are coming off a 4-1 win over the New Jersey Devils on Saturday night. Still, Tampa Bay is worried about its consistently slow starts.

In 12 games, the Lightning has led just twice after one period. They have trailed six times and played to a scoreless draw on four occasions.

The Lightning tends to turn the puck over far too often in opening periods, and that keeps them from getting out on that attack.

That's what happened in Saturday's first period as Tampa Bay trailed New Jersey 1-0 after the opening 20 minutes.

"It's an issue," Lightning coach Jon Cooper told the media. "There's no question."

Tampa Bay goalie Ben Bishop (5-3-0) has been solid -- he had 37 saves against the Devils. But his goals-against average (3.01) is high for him. His GAA was 2.06 last season.

Perhaps Luongo is not the only goalie with something to prove on Monday.

Offensively, Tampa Bay has a deep and dangerous group of forwards, led by Steven Stamkos, who signed an eight-year contract extension in the offseason that will pay him $8.5 million per season on average.

Stamkos has seven goals and seven assists this season, and his 14 points are second on the team behind Nikita Kucherov (four goals, 11 assists, 15 points).

Defenseman Victor Hedman, who also signed a big-money extension in the offseason -- eight years, $7.9 million per season, is the team's third-leading scorer. He has three goals and seven assists.

For Florida, its top three scorers are all surprises: forwards Jon Marchessault (six goals, six assists), Vincent Trocheck (six goals, two assists) and Colton Sceviour (five goals, three assists).

Marchessault and Sceviour weren't even with the team last season, both signing low-money, two-year free-agent contracts on July 1.

Some of the team's bigger names are injured and out long term (forwards Jonathan Huberdeau, Jussi Jokinen and Nick Bjugstad), out with a nagging injury (Jagr, possibly) or slumping (star center Aleksander Barkov has two goals and three assists).

Luongo (3-5-0) hasn't been as sharp as normal, but his GAA isn't terrible at 2.53.

What ails Luongo and the team overall is nothing that couldn't be greatly helped with a win on Monday night.

In other news regarding the game:

The Panthers waived defenseman Steven Kampfer and recalled defenseman Jakub Kindl, 29, from their American Hockey League affiliate, the Springfield Thunderbirds.

Kampfer had been a healthy scratch for 11 of the Panthers' 12 games this season.

Kindl, a native of the Czech Republic, was the Detroit Red Wings' first-round pick, No. 19 overall, in 2005. Last season, he had two assists in 19 games for the Panthers and two goals and four assists in 25 games for Detroit.

The Lightning recalled forward Cory Conacher from AHL Syracuse. With forward Jonathan Drouin listed as day to day with an injury, Conacher's presence provides insurance for Tampa Bay.

Jaden Schwartz, Scottie Upshall and David Perron also scored for the Blues while Matt Duchene scored for the Avalanche.

Devils 4, Hurricanes 1
RALEIGH, N.C. -- Michael Cammalleri produced a hat trick and New Jersey won for the first time in six road games, defeating Carolina at PNC Arena.
Beau Bennett assisted on two of Cammalleri's goals and Andy Greene added an empty-net goal for the Devils with 28 seconds to play.
The Hurricanes avoided a shutout when Andrej Nestrasil scored his first goal of the season.

Rangers 5, Jets 2
NEW YORK -- New York continued to be an offensive juggernaut this season as it reached the five-goal mark for a fifth-straight game in a victory against Winnipeg at Madison Square Garden.
Kevin Hayes, J.T. Miller, Pavel Buchnevich, Mats Zuccarello and Jesper Fast scored for the Rangers. Goaltender Henrik Lundqvist stopped 24 shots to earn the win.
Mark Scheifele and Patrik Laine scored for the Jets. Starting goaltender Connor Hellebuyck allowed 12 goals on 16 shots before being replaced by Michael Hutchinson late in the second period. Hutchinson made one save, as the Rangers didn't put on a shot on net in the third period.

Blackhawks 4, Stars 3 (OT)
CHICAGO -- Marian Hossa scored with 28.7 seconds remaining in overtime to lift Chicago to a win over Dallas.
Jonathan Toews scored a goal and had two assists for the Blackhawks. Patrick Kane and Artem Anisimov also scored as Chicago, which its sixth consecutive game.

Preview: Rockets (3-3) at Wizards (1-4)

Date: November 07, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

WASHINGTON -- While James Harden and the Houston Rockets aim for better results on their five-game road trip, the Washington Wizards hope the return of John Wall leads to a needed win.

The Rockets (3-3) and Wizards (1-3) meet for the first of two games this season on Monday night after both sides lost on the road Saturday.

Harden nearly pulled off a triple-double, but his 30 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds in Atlanta were in vain as the Hawks controlled the Rockets for a 112-97 win.

Houston committed 25 turnovers, including six by Harden, and Atlanta shot 52.9 percent from the field.

The Atlanta frontcourt of Dwight Howard, Paul Millsap and Kent Bazemore combined for 63 points on 25-of-42 shooting from the field as the Rockets fell to 1-2 on their road swing.

"At some point, we've got to guard a guy," Houston coach Mike D'Antoni said. "We didn't really get down and guard. We didn't battle hard enough."

Harden ranks fourth in the NBA in scoring (31.5) and leads all players with 12.3 assists.

Wall's 10.0 assists slots Washington's point guard third overall. He'll have a chance to improve that stat after sitting out Saturday's 88-86 loss at Orlando.

The Wizards' plan, according to coach Scott Brooks, involves resting the three-time All-Star in back-to-back game scenarios for the time being after Wall had two knee procedures during the offseason.

The Wizards led 70-61 entering the fourth quarter on Saturday but soon fell back as the Magic scored 16 straight points. Late-game fades and spotty bench production have provided with an unwanted narrative early in the season.

"We have to find a way to be able to get stops and to be able to score the ball," Wizards guard Bradley Beal said. "We have to do one or the other. The biggest thing we can control is our defense and that is all about effort and just wanting to play.

"I think Coach is pretty fed up with the way we are playing and I think he is going to start playing guys who want to play and guys who want to show up."

Markieff Morris led the Wizards with 18 points, but his 3-point attempt at the buzzer missed after Washington took possession with 0.7 of a second remaining.

"We had a good look," Brooks said of Morris' open shot off the inbounds pass. "We cannot complain about having a chance to win the game on the road on a back-to-back. Our guys battled hard. They have nothing to be ashamed of.

"Unfortunately, we didn't get the win. We played well enough to win this game, though."

The meeting is the first for former Wizards player Nene against his former team after playing parts of the previous five seasons in Washington. The Brazilian big man was a main cog for a team that reached the Eastern Conference semifinals in back-to-back seasons but missed the postseason with a 41-41 record in the previous season.

Nene, who never played more than 67 games in a season with the Wizards, signed a one-year deal with Houston after Washington inked center Ian Mahinmi to a four-year, $64 million contract. The irony is Mahinmi has yet to play this season after suffering a knee injury.

NBA roundup: McCollum scores 37 in Blazers' win
By The Sports Xchange

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Portland shooting guard CJ McCollum tied his career high with 37 points to lead the Trail Blazers to a 100-94 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday.
The score was tied 86-86 when forward Maurice Harkless (18 points, seven rebounds) hit a 3-pointer with 7:16 left in the fourth quarter that kicked off a 9-0 Portland run. Memphis quickly cut the lead to 95-92 with a 6-0 run of its own.
However, McCollum was too much. He answered with his third straight 3-pointer to hike the lead to 98-92 and the Grizzlies never made it a one-possession game again. McCollum scored 16 of his points in the fourth quarter.
Damian Lillard finished with 19 points, seven assists and six rebounds for the Trail Blazers. Marc Gasol led the Grizzlies with 21 points.

Jazz 114, Knicks 109
NEW YORK -- In his first game of the season after missing the previous six with a fractured finger on his left hand, Gordon Hayward scored a team-high 28 points as Utah beat New York.
Rodney Hood scored 12 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter, including two 3-pointers, as the Jazz outscored the Knicks 36-29 in the final period. George Hill added 23 points and nine assists for Utah.
Carmelo Anthony finished with for 28 points and nine rebounds, and Kristaps Porzingis added 28 points and eight boards for the Knicks.

Kings 96, Raptors 91
TORONTO --Rudy Gay scored 23 points, including two free throws with 1:54 left in the game, and Sacramento ended a four-game losing streak with a win over Toronto.
DeMarcus Cousins added 22 points and 14 rebounds for the Kings, who won the final game of their five-game road trip and ended Toronto's three-game winning streak. Kosta Koufos added 13 points and Arron Afflalo had 12.
Toronto's DeMar DeRozan had 23 points to end his streak of scoring 30 or more at five games. He was the first player to open a season with five-plus 30-point games since Michael Jordan did so in the Chicago Bulls' first six games in 1986.

Mavericks 86, Bucks 75 (OT)
DALLAS -- Harrison Barnes and J.J. Barea carried Dallas to its first win over the season, as the Mavericks outlasted Milwaukee in overtime.
Barnes scored a career-high 34 and Barea added 21, including five points in the extra session. The Mavs (1-5) snapped the longest losing streak to open a season in franchise history. Barnes knocked down 13 of 26 shots and grabbed eight rebounds in 48 minutes. Barea had six boards and five assists in 46 minutes.
Milwaukee had its three-game winning streak snapped while playing on the second half of a back-to-back. Jabari Parker led the Bucks with 16 points. Greg Monroe had a double-double (14 points and 12 boards) off the bench.

Nuggets 123, Celtics 107
BOSTON -- Emmanuel Mudiay erupted for 24 of his career-high-matching 30 points in the first quarter, and Wilson Chandler scored 15 of his 22 in the second, powering Denver to a blowout of Boston.
Mudiay was 9 of 10 in the opening quarter, 3 of 6 from 3-point range. He came into the game 19 of 70 overall for the season, 3 of 15 from behind the arc. Chandler didn't score in the first but took over for Mudiay in the second as Denver built up a 25-lead in the first half.
Isaiah Thomas tried to keep the Celtics competitive, scoring season-high-tying 30 points. He has at least 23 in each of the first six games of the season.

Lakers 119, Suns 108
LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles survived a second-half scare and held on to beat Phoenix at Staples Center.
The win raised the Lakers' record to 4-3 (including 3-0 at home). It is the first time they have had a winning record after seven games since they also started 4-3 in 2011-12. The Suns, meanwhile, fell to 2-5.
Before the game, Lakers coach Luke Walton said he expected his team to feel an "emotional hangover" after a big win over the Golden State Warriors Friday night and come out flat against the Suns.
The first-year coach was wrong.

Preview: Pacers (3-3) at Hornets (4-1)

Date: November 07, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

CHARLOTTE -- The Indiana Pacers will travel to Charlotte on Monday night for an Eastern Conference showdown with the Hornets. It's been a tale of two teams for the Pacers so far this season, as they've won all three games at home and lost all three games on the road.

Indiana is coming off its best effort of the season on Saturday night, defeating the Chicago Bulls 111-94 and dominating from the opening tip.

"This is the type of game we want to build on," Coach Nate McMillan said. "We executed on both the offensive and defensive ends. Now let's see if we can take that execution on the road."

Forward C.J. Miles echoed those comments, telling NBA.com: "It's easy to play at home when everybody in the building is rooting for you. When you go on the road, it's just your 15 guys. We've got to make sure everybody gets after it."

Both teams will see familiar faces on the opposite side of the court. Al Jefferson will be making his first appearance back in Charlotte after spending three seasons there. He's off to a slow start with his new team, averaging just 4.7 points in the early going. Former Pacer Roy Hibbert is now with Charlotte, but is doubtful to play because of right knee soreness.

In other injury notes, Charlotte's Marvin Williams missed practice on Sunday with a viral infection and is listed as questionable for Monday's game.

The Pacers (3-3) are hoping Saturday's game is the beginning of a nice stretch for point guard Jeff Teague. He scored 21 points to go along with six assists, and looked much more like the player that starred for the Atlanta Hawks the last few seasons compared to previous games.

"That's the Jeff Teague we thought we were getting," McMillan said.

When the Pacers have struggled this year, it has largely been on the defensive end, especially with guard penetration. Charlotte's point guard Kemba Walker will bring a tough challenge for Indiana. Last season, Walker averaged 26.7 points per game against the Pacers, the most he averaged against any Eastern Conference team.

Walker led the Hornets in scoring in four of their five games, guiding them to a 4-1 start. It's the first time Charlotte started the season 4-1 since the 2000-2001 season.

Despite the good record, the Hornets have only one win against a team over .500, and they've been getting off to slow starts in games.

"We don't want to continue to have bad starts because the results won't be like this all the time," Walker said. "You don't want, at the end of the game, to talk about our start. It shouldn't be that way."

Charlotte coach Steve Clifford has the Hornets playing tough defense this season. The Hornets are ranked third in the NBA in defensive efficiency, allowing 94.1 points per 100 possessions.

The Hornets won all three match-ups with the Pacers last season. It was the first time that happened in the history of the Indiana and Charlotte series.

Preview: Jazz (4-3) at 76ers (0-5)

Date: November 07, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

Gordon Hayward returned to spark the Utah Jazz to a victory over the New York Knicks on Sunday afternoon. Now the Jazz will look to win for the fourth time in five games when they visit the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday night.

Hayward, a veteran forward and Utah's leading scorer last season, missed the first six games after breaking his left ring finger in training camp. He returned to score a team-high 28 points in the 114-109 victory in New York, the Jazz's first stop on a five-game road trip.

"I thought I didn't shoot the ball very well," Hayward told NBA.com. "I honestly didn't think I played very well."

Hayward missed 11 of 17 shots from the floor while playing 35 minutes.

"I wanted to keep my legs -- a lot of it was for my legs, my footwork," Hayward said. "(I wanted) to not be winded and not be on a minutes restriction when I came back. And my legs and my wind were great tonight. So for me I think there's going to be little timing issues, and a little rhythm thing, but I'll get that back in the next couple of games."

Guard George Hill, acquired from the Indiana Pacers in a three-team trade in July, added 23 points on Sunday for Utah (4-3). Hill, who spent five seasons with Indiana, is averaging 20 points per game, which if maintained would be a career high.

The Sixers fell to 0-5 with a 102-101 loss to Cleveland on Saturday night, Philadelphia's 42nd straight October/November defeat dating to a victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Nov. 22, 2013.

The Sixers, who lost their first 18 games last season and their first 17 the previous, fell behind Saturday when the Cavaliers' Channing Frye knocked down a 3-pointer with 1:05 left. Philadelphia turned the ball over on its final five possessions, the last when Cleveland guard J.R. Smith knocked the ball away from Gerald Henderson. Cavaliers guard Iman Shumpert recovered it at the buzzer.

"I got fouled, they didn't call it and that's the end of the game," Henderson told CSNPhilly.com after the game. "I think J.R. was guarding me. Somebody's hand came and it wasn't a lot of ball. I know he hit my arm or my wrist or my hand or whatever it was, and you know, the game's over. But there's a lot of things you can do before then so it doesn't come down to that. But refs didn't make the call and we lose the game. That's the way it goes."

Rookie center Joel Embiid made all four of his 3-point attempts while scoring 22 points for Philadelphia. Embiid, who missed two seasons as a result of two foot surgeries, will be limited to 24 minutes a game until at least Christmas. He nonetheless leads the team with an average of 18.5.

The Sixers are without center/forward Nerlens Noel, who recently had knee surgery, and No. 1 overall draft pick Ben Simmons, who is out until at least January following foot surgery.

Utah forward Boris Diaw will miss another week with a leg contusion and guard Alec Burks is out following knee and ankle surgeries.

Preview: Pistons (4-2) at Clippers (5-1)

Date: November 07, 2016 10:30 PM EDT

LOS ANGELES -- Defense will probably dictate when the Detroit Pistons tangle with the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday night at Staples Center.

Both clubs rank among the NBA's best in defending. The Clippers lead the league in scoring defense, limiting opponents to 90.7 points per game, while producing 102.7 per outing.

The Pistons are second to Los Angeles in scoring defense at 93 points per game, while averaging 100.5 points per game.

Clippers point guard Chris Paul tops the NBA in steals at 3.5 per game.

As a team, Los Angeles is the leader in steals with an average of 10 per game.

Detroit has one of the game's top defenders in the middle with center Andre Drummond, who is averaging 14.7 boards. And, the Pistons are the fifth-best rebounding club in the NBA at 47.3 per game. The Clippers are rank 11th at 45.2. Both teams are averaging 10.2 boards on the offensive end.

But it isn't all about defense with the Pistons (4-2), who earned a 103-86 win over the Denver Nuggets on Saturday in a game Drummond had 19 points and 20 rebounds. Tobias Harris has been a sparkplug offensively, leading the Pistons at 18.8 points per game.

"He's a very mature guy and he's very professional in his approach," Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy said, according to Pistons.com. "He's a guy who's always looking to get better. He looks at his game realistically. He figures out where he needs to improve and he works on it. He's not an excuse guy. It's not outside forces and everything else."

Van Gundy also praised Pistons forward Marcus Morris, who is scoring at a 17.5 points per game clip.

"Marcus is the same way (as Harris)," Van Gundy said. "It's one of the reasons those guys play well. They're willing to look at their performances realistically and make improvements rather than blaming everything and everyone else."

The Clippers (5-1) return home after a successful two-game stretch on the road, where they have compiled a 3-0 mark this season. They are tied with Oklahoma City atop of the Western Conference, their lone loss being to the Thunder last week.

Los Angeles recorded wins over the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday and rolled past the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday behind the performance of Blake Griffin, who scored 26 of his 28 points in the first half en route to a 116-92 romp.

"It's nice to have those easy looks go down," said Griffin, who shot 13-for-19 from the floor, according to the Los Angeles Times. "It just kind of builds your confidence."

Griffin, though, couldn't resist crediting the Clippers' defensive performance for being the difference against the Spurs. After all, defense is the top priority of Clippers coach Doc Rivers, who preaches it practically every time he opens his mouth.

"It starts with defense," Griffin said, according to Clippers.com. "I know we always say that, but it really does."

Said Rivers, "That's two nights in a row that we've had great pace, and our defense has been as good as I've seen it. Our hands are everywhere right now, and that's a good sign."

Preview: Heat (2-3) at Thunder (5-1)

Date: November 07, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

Jerami Grant has been with the Oklahoma City Thunder since Nov. 1. Since then, he has played in three games but only took part in one practice, which came Sunday afternoon.

Despite his lack of knowledge and experience with the Thunder, Grant has been a diamond in the rough for the team, averaging 6.4 points and three rebounds coming off the bench.

In Grant's first home game on Friday night against Minnesota, he blocked four shots and came up with a monster dunk over Cole Aldrich that got the fans out of their seats.

As Grant gets more accustomed to his new team, Thunder coach Billy Donovan sees the versatile forward becoming a bigger factor as the season goes on.

"It's been a little bit of a challenge offensively, just being honest," Donovan said. "It's not his fault or anybody's fault. We just haven't had any practice time yet. Because of his versatility, the hard part for him has been that the last two games he has played two different positions -- the small forward spot and the power forward spot."

Grant will most likely see time at power forward on Monday night when the Thunder (5-1) play host to Miami (2-3) at Chesapeake Energy Arena.

The Heat's Hassan Whiteside has been on a tear, despite his team not playing particularly well.

The Heat are coming off a 96-87 loss to Toronto on Friday night. Whiteside led Miami with 21 points on 10-of-18 shooting from the field. He also grabbed 16 rebounds.

"He was tremendous, really impact. He's playing hard and he's making better reads on both ends of the court," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "He just has to keep building and he's doing that in big minutes, too."

But it will be the play of another Miami player that should catch the attention of Oklahoma City fans. Guard Dion Waiters will be playing his first game in Oklahoma City since leaving the team in the offseason when the two sides were unable to come together on a new contract.

However, Waiters told The Palm Beach Post that if Kevin Durant had decided to stay with the Thunder, he wouldn't be wearing a different uniform right now.

"At the end of the day, if they would have kept it together, I'm pretty sure I would have went back one more year to see what we could do because we were 24 minutes away from the finals," Waiters told the Post. "Once things went the way it went I kind of knew."

Waiters went on to sign a two-year, $5.9 million deal with the Heat. He is averaging 11 points on 35 percent shooting from the field through five games as he replaces former Miami legend Dwyane Wade.

Waiters' former teammates know what he will bring to the game for Miami.

"When he got here, the ball would stop when he would get in," Oklahoma City's Nick Collison said. "By the end, he was really good at shooting open shots, driving and moving it. Defensively, I was really impressed with him. He was probably one of our best two-way wing players."
