KEY STAT: Havant have gone out in the FA Cup first round on four of the last five occasions they have reached this stage

EXPERT VERDICT: Havant and Waterlooville are in the first round for the fifth time in ten years after beating Canvey Island 3-0 in a replay, with top scorer JJ Hooper, Ben Swallow and Scott Donnelly finding the net. However, the Hawks tend to struggle when they get this far and Preston are a strong League One side.

RECOMMENDATION: Preston to win 2-0

KEY STAT: Torquay have scored in each of their last 13 league matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Torquay have lost five of their last six league games but can turn the tide with a draw at the Hive. Barnet lead the Conference Premier by nine points but may be nursing one or two tired legs after two players – Andy Yiadom and Sam Togwell – were dismissed in Saturday’s 3-1 loss at home to Wycombe in the FA Cup.

KEY STAT: Walsall have lost one of their last seven home games

EXPERT VERDICT: Sheffield United boss Nigel Clough is using the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy to hand game time to his fringe players but the policy could backfire with a defeat at the Banks’s Stadium. Injuries restricted Walsall’s progress in the early months of the season but key players have returned in recent weeks and they are unbeaten in their last three games.

RECOMMENDATION: Walsall

NHL Grand Salami - November

The Grand Salami in pro hockey is decided by adding up all the goals scored in every game scheduled for that particular day. You can wager on 'over' or 'under' the Grand Salami total. The total is set by adding up all listed 'over/under' odds for each game on that particular day.

Note: The Grand Salami will have no action if any game is suspended or cancelled before the regulation time of three twenty minute periods. Also, regardless of the number of goals scored during the shoot out portion of the overtime, the final scored recorded for the game will give the winning team on more goal than its opponent based on the score at the end of regulation time.

*The majority of sportsbooks do not put out a total on the Grand Salami when there is only one game on the card. For tracking purposes, we will continue to show the 'over/under' for goals and combined goals scored on days with just one game.

Preview: Devils (6-6) at Bruins (9-6)

Date: November 10, 2014 7:00 PM EDT

Mounting defensive injuries haven't stopped the Boston Bruins from finding their stride, and the New Jersey Devils aren't seeking out any excuses for their recent form despite being without key forwards.

The Bruins will try to complete a perfect homestand Monday night, while the Devils try to avoid their second four-game losing streak of the young season.

Boston (9-6-0) has won four in a row, including the last three at home, and could be getting some blue-line help. Torey Krug may return from a broken finger that's kept him out of the last five games.

Krug has returned to practice, but his status is uncertain. Fellow defensemen Zdeno Chara (knee) and Kevan Miller (shoulder) remain out, while David Krejci is day to day with an undisclosed injury that has limited the forward to 10 games this season. Krejci has 11 points in his last eight games against New Jersey.

Despite the injuries, the Bruins have limited opponents to seven goals during the win streak on an average of 22.3 shots per game. They gave up 34.2 on the 3-3-0 stretch that preceded it.

Thursday's 5-2 win over Edmonton featured a slow start offensively and a strong finish with four goals in the final nine minutes. Dougie Hamilton had a goal and two assists, giving the defenseman eight points in six games after managing two in the first nine.

Carl Soderberg, Reilly Smith and Loui Eriksson each had a goal and an assist.

"When we were struggling, we didn't have that confidence to finish off those games and get a win," Soderberg told the team's official website. "So hopefully we get more confidence and can keep winning those games in the future."

Confidence could also be mounting for Tuukka Rask. The reigning Vezina Trophy winner has won all three of his starts this month with a 1.64 goals-against average after posting a 3.25 GAA in his previous six games.

Against New Jersey, Rask is 3-2-1 with a 1.44 GAA in six starts.

The Bruins have won 12 of the last 15 meetings, including six of seven in Boston, and are potentially catching the Devils (6-6-2) at a good time.

New Jersey's 4-2 loss in Detroit on Friday was its third straight regulation defeat - a deserved result, according to coach Peter DeBoer.

"I think the score was flattering," DeBoer said via the team's official Twitter feed. "There weren't many silver linings tonight. They were the better team. It was the right result."

The Devils were without forwards Ryane Clowe (head), Mike Cammalleri (head), Martin Havlat (lower body) and Adam Henrique (lower body), as well as defenseman Jon Merrill (arm). Cammalleri and Havlat practiced Sunday, while Clowe, Henrique and Merrill remained out.

In goal, Cory Schneider allowed four goals on 24 shots and was pulled for the third period. He's been pulled from each of his last three starts on the road and is 3-5-2 with a 3.18 GAA overall since winning his first three games of the season.

"I think right now we all need to take a look at ourselves, me included," Schneider said. "We need to be great on these nights, we can't just be good."

The penalty kill has been a big part of the problem. The Devils have allowed at least one power-play goal in four straight games, and their 38-for-58 season mark (65.5 percent) ranks last in the league.

Ottawa goalie Robin Lehner had his worst game of the season, stopping just 25 shots while center Kyle Turris and wingers Mike Hoffman and Mark Stone scored goals.

NBA Preview: Spurs (2-3) at Clippers (4-2)

Date: November 10, 2014 10:30 PM EDT

As the defending NBA champions, the San Antonio Spurs are having trouble matching the intensity of seemingly hungrier opponents looking to make a statement early on.

Now the Los Angeles Clippers look to give the Spurs their best after opening a difficult homestand in positive fashion.

Two clubs hoping to contend for a title begin their season series Monday night when the Clippers try to send the visiting Spurs to their worst start in six years.

San Antonio (2-3) has yet to resemble the squad that won the franchise's fifth crown in June, sitting on the verge of its worst start since opening 2-5 in 2008-09 - a season that ended with a first-round playoff loss.

They'll try to avoid their third straight defeat after falling 100-99 at home to New Orleans on Saturday. The Pelicans' Anthony Davis scored the winner with 6.6 seconds left after San Antonio had gone on a 15-4 run to take the lead.

"I understand a year after winning the championship you're going to get everyone's best shot," coach Gregg Popovich said. "I believe we're out there playing hard and I believe things just haven't gone out way."

Popovich's club has been sluggish offensively, ranking in the league's bottom third in scoring (92.8 points per game), field-goal percentage (43.2), 3-point percentage (31.5) and turnovers per game (18.2). The Spurs are already playing short-handed with Marco Belinelli (groin), Tiago Splitter (calf) and Patty Mills (shoulder) among the wounded.

The Clippers (4-2) will try to add to San Antonio's slow start after breaking out of their own early funk Saturday with a 106-102 victory over Portland that opened a challenging four-game stay that includes visits from Chicago and Phoenix.

Los Angeles had beaten undermanned Oklahoma City, the winless Lakers and Utah by an average of 5.3 points and lost to surprising Sacramento before getting blown out at Golden State on Wednesday.

"We came out this year like we won something last year and everyone else came out like they got their heart broken," center DeAndre Jordan said. "We just needed to get back to what got us to where we were last year."

J.J. Redick broke out with 30 points Saturday after averaging 10.2 on 28.9 percent shooting in his previous five games. Blake Griffin added 23 despite playing through an illness and Chris Paul had 22 points and 11 assists for his fifth straight double-double.

Griffin has played particularly well at home against the Spurs, averaging 25.7 points and 12.0 rebounds in his last six meetings. The All-Star power forward scored 31.0 per game to help the Clippers split two meetings at Staples Center last season.

Griffin may have to spend some time going against Tim Duncan, who struggled with a season-low 11 points on 3-of-10 shooting Saturday after resting in a loss at Houston.

Tony Parker, though, bounced back from a six-point effort with a season-high 28 versus New Orleans. Kawhi Leonard looks to build on his 14-point performance after averaging 8.0 points on 26.9 percent shooting in his previous three.

"I feel like we're in decent shape; still getting there," guard Danny Green said. "We're not in the greatest shape. We're just not in our normal team rhythm, our chemistry."

The Spurs have won 56 of 65 meetings with the Clippers, including a four-game sweep in the 2012 Western Conference semifinals. They took two of three in last season's series, winning the last two by double digits.

NBA game roundup: Raptors off to franchise's best start
By THE SPORTS XCHANGE

TORONTO -- Guard DeMar DeRozan scored 24 points and grabbed six rebounds as the Toronto Raptors defeated the winless Philadelphia 76ers 120-88 on Sunday for their fourth straight win.

The Raptors are off to the best start in franchise history at 6-1 while the 76ers have lost all seven of their games this season.

Forward Terrence Ross added 17 points for the Raptors while forward Lou Williams had 16 points with guard Kyle Lowry scoring 14. Guard Greivis Vasquez chipped in with 13 points while center Jonas Valanciunas contributed 12 points and five rebounds.

Guard Tony Wroten led the 76ers with 18 points to end a string of four straight games with 20 or more points in a game.

Forward Chris Johnson added 16 points for Philadelphia, guard Alexey Shved added 14 points and center Henry Sims had 12 points with eight rebounds.

The Raptors took a 15-point lead into the third quarter, and bumped it to 19 when DeRozan scored the first four points of the second half. DeRozan, who scored 13 points in the quarter, made a put-back layup to increase the lead to 27 points with 4:28 to play in the third. The quarter finished with the Raptors leading 88-63.

Williams hit a 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter to make it a 28-point Toronto lead. The lead reached 33 when Vasquez put in a layup and followed with a hook shot. With 8:12 to play.

The lead was 41 points after forward James Johnson made a dunk with 2:32 to play. The franchise record for largest margin of victory is 42.

Jazz 97, Pistons 96

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Gordon Hayward scored 11 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter as Utah squeaked past Detroit at The Palace.

Power forward Derrick Favors contributed 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Jazz), who began a five-game road trip, all against Eastern Conference teams. Center Enes Kanter and shooting guard Alec Burks added 14 points apiece and reserve forward Joe Ingles chipped in 10.

Pistons point guard Brandon Jennings led all scorers with 23 points but missed a 15-foot floater in the final seconds.

Heat 105, Mavericks 96

DALLAS -- Luol Deng scored a season-high 30 points as Miami cruised to a victory over Dallas at American Airlines Center.

The Heat extended their winning streak over Dallas to seven straight games, while improving to 2-1 on the road this season. Miami has won two in a row after a two-game skid.

Deng surpassed his previous best scoring output in a Miami uniform by 12 points and reached the 30-point plateau for the first time since Dec. 2, 2013, when he was with Chicago. The veteran small forward, signed in the offseason to help offset the loss of LeBron James, made 13 of 19 shots from the floor, including four of nine 3-point attempts.

Heat guard Dwyane Wade and center Chris Bosh both notched 20-10 double-doubles. Wade had 20 points and 10 assists, and Bosh scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in his hometown. Miami guard Mario Chalmers scored 18 off the bench. Dallas guard Monta Ellis scored a team-high 23, with center Tyson Chandler netting his third double-double of the season with 16 points and 15 boards. Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki finished with 17 points, 16 coming in the first half.

Thunder 101, Kings 93

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Reggie Jackson scored 22 points to lead Oklahoma City to a victory over Sacramento at the Chesapeake Energy Arena.

The win was the second of the season for the Thunder, who moved to 2-5 on the season. Both wins have come at home against teams that were leading their division at the time.

Guard Rudy Gay paced the Kings with 23 points on 9-of-18 shooting.

Suns 107, Warriors 95

PHOENIX -- Guards Gerald Green and Isaiah Thomas combined for 31 points in the fourth quarter as Phoenix rallied from a 12-point deficit in the third quarter to hand Golden State its first loss of the season.

Thomas finished with 22 points and Green added 19 as the Suns denied the Warriors their best start since moving to the Bay Area. Guard Goran Dragic had 19 points and forward Marcus Morris added 17 for the Suns, who had lost three of their last four games but avoided the fourth-quarter shooting woes that have plagued them, outscoring Golden State 36-16 in the period to win going away.

Guard Steph Curry had 28 points, 10 assists and 10 of Golden State's 27 turnovers. The Suns turned those turnovers into 30 points and hit 12 of 30 3-pointers on the night.

Trail Blazers 116, Nuggets 100

PORTLAND -- Forward LaMarcus Aldridge scored 28 points and grabbed nine rebounds and guard Wesley Matthews added 21 points and six rebounds as Portland defeated Denver at the Moda Center.

Six players scored in double figures for the Trail Blazers, including center Chris Kaman, who had 12 points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots off the bench. Forward Kenneth Faried scored 19 points and guards Arron Afflalo and Ty Lawson tallied 18 apiece for the Nuggets, who lost their fifth straight game.

Portland won the game on its 3-point proficiency. The Blazers were 16 for 31 (.516), the Nuggets only 5 for 16 from beyond the arc.

Lakers 107, Hornets 92

LOS ANGELES -- Kobe Bryant and Jeremy Lin each scored 21 points, and Los Angeles ended a five-game skid with a rout of Charlotte at Staples Center.

Lin connected on eight-of-12 shooting, including three of six on 3-pointers, and also dished out seven assists as the Lakers avoided the worst start in franchise history, an 0-7 beginning that belongs to the 1957-58 Minneapolis Lakers. The Hornets had their two-game winning streak snapped.

Forward Carlos Boozer finished with 16 points and six rebounds for the Lakers. Los Angeles center Jordan Hill chipped in 12 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Center Al Jefferson led Charlotte with 23 points and eight rebounds, while point guard Kemba Walker scored 17 points. Guard Gary Neal came off the bench to add 14 points.

Nets 104, Magic 96

NEW YORK -- Bojan Bogdanovic has only been an NBA player for six games now, but Brooklyn's rookie guard has definitely impressed new Nets head coach Lionel Hollins.

Bogdanovic paced a balanced scoring attack with 22 points, leading the Nets to a victory over Orlando at the Barclays Center.

The Nets also received 18 points and seven assists from guard Deron Williams, 13 from guard Joe Johnson, 12 from center Brook Lopez and 12 points and 10 rebounds off the bench from center Mason Plumlee. Brooklyn won three of four on the home stand that finished Sunday.

Home ML faves cashing tickets at a rapid rate
Stephen Campbell

There's been no place like home for favored NBA squads so far this season.

Home moneyline favorites are an astounding 44-16 this year, cashing tickets 73 percent of the time throughout the young campaign.

That's a trend bettors need to be aware of and keep an eye on as the season progresses. There are eight games on the hardcourt Sunday, highlighted by Miami-Dallas and the undefeated Golden State Warriors taking on the Phoenix Suns in the desert.

Total Talk - Week 10
By Chris David

Week 9 Recap

The ‘over’ went 7-5-1 in Week 9 and four of those winning tickets were helped with some healthy second-half surges.

Jaguars-Bengals: 41 points
Redskins-Vikings: 38 points
Ravens-Steelers: 34 points (all in 4th quarter)
Colts-Giants: 45 points

We apologize to bettors that had the ‘under’ in those games and congratulate the winners.

Through nine weeks of the regular season, the ‘over’ has gone 70-63-1.

Thursday System heads to MNF

I’m running out of adjectives to describe the “Thursday Night Total” system but after watching New England and Denver combine for 64 points last week, I think unreal sums it up.

Including the Broncos-Patriots outcome, this system is now 21-3-1 (88%) dating back to last season.

What’s the system?

All you have to do is find out who played at home the previous Thursday and play the ‘over’ in their next game, regardless of the venue.

Since Carolina hosted New Orleans last Thursday, the betting angle applies to the Panthers-Eagles matchup on MNF. Personally, I’m not buying the ‘over’ or the ‘under’ in this situation.

For starters, this system has gone 6-1 this season but the one loss came on MNF in Week 5 when the Seahawks and Redskins went ‘under’ (45). I hate to play the due factor but ‘under’ tickets will eventually start to show up more in these primetime games.

Another factor that is scaring me away from the ‘over’ is the QB play for both Carolina and Philadelphia. I don’t know if Cam Newton is hurt but he’s not the same guy for the Panthers this season.

On the other side of the ball is Mark Sanchez, who was put on a pedestal after filling in for Nick Foles and helping the Eagles beat the Texans 31-20 last Sunday.

Do you really trust Sanchez? His numbers were decent but he did have two interceptions and that’s never a good thing.

I hope it hits if you play the ‘over’ but please keep in mind that these trends and systems aren’t always automatic and they should be used as part of your handicapping.

Those looking ahead to Week 11 can begin to handicap the Saints-Bengals matchup since Cincinnati just hosted Cleveland this past Thursday.

Atlanta at Tampa Bay: In Week 3, the Falcons blasted the Buccaneers 56-14 in a nationally televised Thursday matchup and the ‘over’ (47) cashed early in the third quarter. Since then, Atlanta has dropped five straight and the ‘under’ has gone 4-1 during that losing skid behind an offense averaging 17.8 PPG. Tampa Bay has been a mess at home offensively (15.3 PPG), which has led to a 3-1 ‘under’ mark. Josh McCown is back at QB for Tampa Bay and he wasn’t great during his first go ‘round with the starting unit. The ‘over’ has cashed in the last three encounters between the pair. This total opened 47 ½ and was knocked down quickly to 46.

Week 10

Panthers (3-5-1) @ Eagles (6-2)-- Sanchez gets first start at QB for Philly after Foles broke collarbone last week; he was 33-29 in four years as starter for Jets. Since 2010, Eagles are 11-19 as home favorites, 5-7 under Kelly, 2-2 this year, winning home games by 17-3-6-27 points. Philly turned ball over 16 times in last five games (-9) prompting rumors Eagle brass was souring on Foles even before he got hurt. Carolina is 1-5-1 in last seven games after its 2-0 start; they’ve lost last three games by 21-4-18 points, are 2-2 as road dog, losing away games by 28-21 points, with win at Tampa, tie in Cincinnati. Panthers have one TD, four turnovers in last two games. NFC East non-divisional home favorites are 3-4; NFC road underdogs are 4-5. Last three Carolina road games went over total.

Biggest Favorite to Cash

Denver opened up as 11 ½-point road favorites, as that line closed at 12 ½ at Oakland. The Broncos crushed the Raiders, 41-17 at the Coliseum to bounce back from last week's loss at New England. The other double-digit favorite to cover was Baltimore (-10), who overcame an early 7-0 deficit in a 21-7 victory over Tennessee.

Biggest Underdog to Cash

San Francisco (+5 ½) built a 14-0 lead at New Orleans, but the Saints rallied back to take a 24-21 lead late in the fourth quarter. The 49ers kicked a late field goal to force overtime, then booted another field goal to win it, 27-24. The Niners cash at +210 on money-line (Bet $100 to win $210).

Another underdog to cash was the Jets (+4), who cruised past the Steelers, 20-13 to snap an eight-game losing streak.

Home/Away

Home teams went 5-6 SU and 5-6 ATS in Week 9. Road teams to win include the Browns, Cowboys, Bills, 49ers, Falcons, and Broncos.

Not so Sharp

Buffalo opened as a short underdog against Kansas City, but closed as 1 ½-point favorites. The Bills built a 13-3 lead through three quarters, but the Chiefs scored two late touchdowns to beat Buffalo, 17-13 to cover for the seventh time in eight games.

Cruising Cardinals

Arizona continues to find ways to win at home, rallying past St. Louis as seven-point favorites, 31-14. Carson Palmer left the game with an apparent knee injury, but the Cardinals converting on a 48-yard touchdown pass to take a 17-14 advantage in the fourth quarter. Arizona backers were helped by a pair of defensive touchdowns in the final five minutes as the Cards improved to 8-1 on the season.

Public comes through late

All three 4:00 kickoffs cashed the Favorite-Over combination for the first time this season. The Broncos, Cardinals, and Seahawks all covered easily, while big fourth quarters in Arizona and Seattle helped hit the 'over.' Seattle snapped a four-game ATS skid in a 38-17 blowout of the Giants, as the Seahawks rushed for a season-high 350 yards in a steady rain.

Hot ant Not

-- The Cardinals are 5-0 SU/ATS in their last five games, while covering four straight at home .

-- Chiefs started the season at 0-2, but have won six of their past seven games. Kansas City is 7-1 ATS since failing to cover in the opener against Tennessee

-- The Giants are in a major tail-spin, dropping four straight games. New York hasn't covered in this stretch, losing all four times by double-digits.

Losers keep losing

The Jets found a way to get in the win column, but the Jaguars, Buccaneers, and Raiders all lost and failed to cover. Jacksonville went to London to lose its ninth game of the season, falling to the Cowboys, 31-17 as 7 ½-point underdogs. Tampa Bay was destroyed at Atlanta in Week 3 and had an opportunity at revenge at home. The Bucs led, 17-16 in the second half, but the Falcons ran off 11 points to pull off the sweep and cover as three-point road favorites.

Totals

On Sunday afternoon, the 'over' went 5-5, while three contests saw at least 50 points scored. In the late games, the ‘over’ went a perfect 3-0. Including Thursday’s result, the ‘over/under’ has gone 5-6 in Week 10.

Notable total streaks include:

The Browns have seen the ‘under’ cash in their last five games.

Seattle has seen the ‘over’ go 4-1 in its last five matchups.

Denver is on a 6-0 run to the ‘over.’

Miami is on a 4-0 run to the ‘under.’

Panthers look to rebound on MNF

Line & Total: Philadelphia -6.5, Total: 48

The struggling Panthers are in a must-win situation when they visit the Eagles on Monday night.

Philadelphia will be without starting QB Nick Foles (collarbone) indefinitely, leaving Mark Sanchez as the No. 1 signal caller. Sanchez helped the Eagles beat the Texans 31-21 in Houston last week, which made them 3-1 (SU and ATS) in their past four games. Carolina is going the opposite direction with four straight games without a win (0-3-1 SU), including a lopsided 28-10 home loss to the Saints last Thursday.

The Panthers and Eagles have met just eight times since Carolina entered the league in 1995, with Philly holding the 5-3 advantage (SU and ATS). But in the most recent meeting in 2012, Cam Newton threw for 306 yards and two touchdowns in a 30-22 road victory for the Panthers.

Carolina is 20-8 ATS after trailing in its previous game by 14 or more points at the half since 1992. The team is also 24-10 ATS after scoring 14 points or less in two straight games in that time. Philadelphia, meanwhile, is 159-125 ATS against conference opponents since 1992.

S Thomas DeCoud (hamstring) and CB Bene Benwikere (ankle) are listed as questionable for the Panthers, as are three offensive linemen -- G Trai Turner (knee), OT Byron Bell (elbow) and G Amini Silatolu (calf). The Eagles are also thin on their offensive line with G Todd Herremans (bicep) landing on IR this week while G Evan Mathis (knee) is questionable. They also have two key defenders with injuries, as LB DeMeco Ryans suffered a season-ending torn Achilles last week and S Nate Allen (hamstring) is questionable.

Carolina has really faltered recently, but needs to move past that and pick up a win in Philadelphia on Monday. QB Cam Newton (1,794 pass yards, 8 TD, 5 INT) is coming off one of the worst games of his career, completing only 10-of-28 passes for 151 yards, no touchdowns and one interception at home against a miserable New Orleans defense. He should, however, have a great chance to turn things around against a Philadelphia defense that is allowing 256.3 passing yards per game (22nd in NFL).

WR Kelvin Benjamin (40 rec, 589 yards, 5 TD) and TE Greg Olsen (45 rec, 539 yards, 5 TD) will constantly be open over the middle of the field against this defense and Newton will need to deliver more accurate passes, as he was overthrowing receivers consistently last game.

One issue this team is having is in the ground game, as the Panthers are rushing for just 94.7 yards per contest (26th in NFL), which is giving teams the ability to focus strictly on stopping Newton and this passing offense.

Defensively, Carolina has also struggled in both aspects of the game. They are allowing 246.2 passing yards per game (17th in NFL) and 131.9 rushing yards per game (26th in NFL). They do have a good chance to turn things around as they’ll face an offense led by a backup quarterback.

Eagles QB Mark Sanchez has been eager to get another chance at starting in the NFL and with Nick Foles’ injury, he has a golden opportunity to turn his career around by running a very potent offensive team. Sanchez threw for 202 yards (9.2 YPA) with two touchdowns and two interceptions while picking up a victory for the Eagles last week against the Texans. His first start will come against a below-average passing defense.

RB LeSean McCoy (622 rush yards, 1 TD) has had a down year for his standards, but he has heated up with 116.3 rushing yards per game in the past three weeks. His workload should increase with the Eagles now starting a quarterback who is less familiar with their system. One player who has completely stood out on this team is WR Jeremy Maclin (45 rec, 790 yards, 8 TD). He has been on a tear recently, catching two touchdowns in each of the past two games with 150+ yards in both. It will be interesting to see if he can keep up his production with Sanchez at quarterback, but Maclin did catch all four Sanchez targets for 88 yards and a touchdown last week.

This defense will need to improve as they get closer to the playoffs, as their play can get very sloppy at times. For the season Philly is allowing 116.9 rushing YPG (20th in NFL) and 256.3 passing YPG (22nd in league). Monday will be a good chance for this team to cause some turnovers with Newton at quarterback for the Panthers.

Panthers or Eagles? NFL bloggers debate who will cover Monday Night

The Philadelphia Eagles begin life without Nick Foles as the Mark Sanchez era begins with a visit from the Carolina Panthers on Monday Night Football to conclude Week 10's slate of games.

Books opened the Eagles anywhere from -5.5 to -6.5 and that presently sits -7. Philly has posted a record of 3-1 both straight up and against the spread in its last four games, while Carolina has lost four-straight SU, but has gone 2-2 ATS over that stretch.

In order to get a grasp on this primetime matchup, we’ve enlisted the help of those who know these teams the best. Expert NFL bloggers Bill Voth from Carolina blog Black and Blue Review and Brandon Gowton from Philadelphia blog Bleeding Green Nation strap on the pads and debate which team will not only win, but cover the spread Monday night.

Health

The Panthers suffered a rash of injuries at running back and on the offensive line in the first half of the season, but they're almost completely healthy after their 'mini-bye.' Eleven days separated from their Thursday night loss to the Saints in Week 9 to this Monday night game. The only players ruled out are a couple rookies: right guard Trai Turner and nickel corner Bené Benwikere. And while both are starters, this is the healthiest the Panthers have been since they began the year with two wins.

'Double Trouble' is back

The best chance the Panthers have to win Monday night is to take the air out of the ball. That means they'll give a lot more work to running backs DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, who have each recovered from early season injuries. They only got eight carries apiece against the Saints, and the Panthers lost in time of possession by nearly 11 minutes. Williams and Stewart aren't going to be the backs of 2009 when they each rushed for more than 1,000 yards anytime soon, but they should be able to grind out some good yardage against the Eagles' 20th-ranked run defense.

Mark Sanchez

While the Panthers are about as healthy as they can be, the Eagles had two costly losses in their win over the Texans in Week 9. Quarterback Nick Foles (collarbone) and middle linebacker DeMeco Ryans (Achilles) each went down, and while Ryans may ultimately be a bigger loss, what's more interesting is who's replacing Foles. Mark Sanchez tossed two touchdowns last week, but he also threw two interceptions. Perhaps the former buttfumbler can revitalize his career under Eagles head coach Chip Kelly but at the end of the day, Sanchez is still the guy who flamed out with the Jets.

WHY PHILADELPHIA WILL COVER

Refocused Run Game

With starting quarterback Nick Foles having gone down to a shoulder injury, it's time for the Eagles to get back to what they do best: run the football. Philadelphia's rushing attack should be rejuvenated now that talented center Jason Kelce and All-Pro left guard Evan Mathis have returned from injury. The Eagles have something of a three-headed monster now at running back with star rusher LeSean McCoy, veteran offensive weapon Darren Sproles, and emerging bruiser Chris Polk. Philadelphia will look to exploit Carolina's 26th-ranked run defense early and often.

In Sanchez We Trust

The much-maligned Mark Sanchez is set to take over at quarterback with Foles out due to injury. While Sanchez struggled earlier in his career with the Jets, he has looked comfortable moving the ball at times as a member of the Eagles. Sanchez played relatively well for coming off the bench cold in Week 9. This time around he'll have a full week of starter's preparation heading into the game. A refocused run game should lessen the burden on Sanchez and prevent him from having to carry the offense on his back.

Home Field Dominance

The Eagles are very good when playing at Lincoln Financial Field recently. In their last eight regular season home games, the team is a perfect 8-0. Philadelphia has outscored their opponents 268-147 in that span, an average of 33.5 to 18.4 per game. Not only should the Eagles be able to beat the Panthers, who own the NFL's seventh worst point differential, but they should be able to do it comfortably.

Monday Night Football: Panthers at Eagles

Carolina Panthers at Philadelphia Eagles (-7, 48.5)

The Philadelphia Eagles begin life without quarterback Nick Foles when they host the scuffling Carolina Panthers on Monday night. Foles was injured late in the first quarter of last week's 31-21 win at Houston, giving the Eagles three quarters to acclimate Mark Sanchez to the starting role. Sanchez was solid against the Texans, and the team feels good about his chances for success against a Panthers team that has given up 30.7 points over its last seven games.

"Mark can play, man," said Philadelphia wideout Jeremy Maclin, the reigning NFC Offensive Player of the Week. "There's no question about it. He's also surrounded by a lot more talent than what he had in New York, so the sky's the limit." The Panthers, meanwhile, have only one win since Sept. 14 but should benefit from the return of two key offensive linemen as Cam Newton looks to regain his consistency. “A lot of it is not just about him,” Carolina coach Ron Rivera said. “We can put it all on the quarterback and say it’s all about the quarterback, but this is a team game.”

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, ESPN.

LINE HISTORY: The Eagles opened as 6-point home faves, but that has moved to -7. The total opened 48 and has gone up a half-point.

INJURY REPORT: Panthers - G Amini Silatolu (Questionable, calf), G Trai Turner (Questionable, knee), S Thomas DeCoud (Questionable, hamstring), WR Philly Brown (Probable, concussion). Eagles - S Nate Allen (Probable, hamstring).

POWER RANKINGS: Panthers (+2.5) + Eagles (-3.5) + home field (-3.0) = Eagles -9.0

WEATHER FORECAST: Temperatures will be in the low-50s with wind blowing toward the north endzone at 3 mph.

WHAT EXPERTS SAY: "Carolina is just a game out of first place in the NFC South despite a three-game losing streak. Off Thursday's loss to Saints and is 0-5-1 ATS in last six after New Orleans. Philadelphia will be without Nick Foles for eight weeks and will lean on Mark Sanchez for the rest of the regular season. 2-8 ATS in last 10 vs. teams with a losing road record." Matt Fargo.

ABOUT THE PANTHERS (3-5-1 SU, 5-4 ATS, 5-4 O/U ): Left tackle Byron Bell and left guard Amini Silatolu are slated to return for Carolina, which ranks 20th in the league in passing yards and 26th in rushing yards. The Panthers have scored a total of 36 points in their last three games with Newton throwing for just 176 yards per contest during that stretch. On the bright side, Luke Kuechly continues to lead the league in tackles with 97 and has an NFL-high 417 tackles since entering the league in 2012.

ABOUT THE EAGLES (6-2 SU, 5-3 ATS, 5-3 O/U): After Foles broke his collarbone, Sanchez threw two touchdowns and a pair of interceptions last week in his first regular-season action since December 2012. The focus of the offense will continue to be Maclin, who has 18 catches for 345 yards and four touchdowns in his last two games, and LeSean McCoy, whose four most productive games of the season have come in his last four outings. Philadelphia's biggest concern heading into Monday night's contest is likely how to replace linebacker DeMeco Ryans, who tore his Achilles tendon last weekend and will be replaced by a trio of relative unknowns in the middle of the Eagles' 3-4 scheme.

TRENDS:

* Over is 5-2 in the last seven meetings.
* Eagles are 5-2 ATS in their last seven home games.
* Under is 11-2 in Panthers last 13 vs. NFC.
* Over is 7-1-1 in Eagles last nine Monday games.

CONSENSUS: 60 percent of bets are backing the Eagles.

Eagles now 7.5-point faves against Carolina
Andrew Caley

The line continues to move towards the Philadelphia Eagles for their Monday night showdown with the Carolina Panthers.

The Eagles have moved to 7.5-point home favorites, after opening at -6.5 earlier in the week. After initially getting bet down to -5.5, the line has steadily moved in Philadelphia's favor to the current number.
