Preview: Houston at Denver

When: 8:30 PM ET, Monday, October 24, 2016
Where: Sports Authority Field, Denver, Colorado

Brock Osweiler was instrumental in the Denver Broncos' run to a Super Bowl championship, but he was still allowed to walk via free agency in the offseason despite an obvious need at quarterback. Osweiler returns to the Mile High City off his best performance of the season when the Houston Texans visit the Denver Broncos on Monday night.

Osweiler went 5-2 in place of an injured Peyton Manning last season, but Denver was unwilling to meet the asking price -- a four-year, $72 million contract -- to keep him. "Bottom line I'm going to treat this game no different than any other game," Osweiler said. I'm going to go out and have a great week of practice and I'm going to understand the challenge ahead of us, but I'll look forward to that challenge." The move not to pursue Osweiler has looked brilliant as former seventh-round draft pick Trevor Siemian guided the Broncos to a 4-0 start. However, Siemian missed one game to injury and Denver's has sputtered in back-to-back losses to Atlanta and San Diego, scoring a combined 29 points.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, ESPN. LINE: Broncos -9. O/U: 40.5

ABOUT THE TEXANS (4-2): Osweiler's numbers were nondescript at best through much of the first six games, but he tossed a pair of touchdowns in the final 2:37 of regulation to spark a comeback in Houston's 26-23 overtime win over Indianapolis last weekend. Running back Lamar Miller, also a marquee free-agent signing in the offseason, is coming off his best game by rushing for 149 yards and scoring his first two touchdowns -- one on the ground and one receiving. Star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins had a season-high nine receptions against the Colts, but his longest catch went for only 12 yards.

ABOUT THE BRONCOS (4-2): Defense carried Denver to the Super Bowl title last season and it ranks No. 1 in yards against the pass (182.3) and in sacks (21), but the running game is struggling to get untracked. Lead back C.J. Anderson has failed to rush for 50 yards in four consecutive games and is starting to lose touches to rookie Devontae Booker. Siemian, who suffered a shoulder injury in Week 4 that caused him to miss one game, has not been picked off since Week 2 and has a pair of top wideouts in Emmanuel Sanders and Demaryius Thomas, who have combined for 67 receptions and six touchdowns.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak will be back on the sideline after missing one game due to illness.

2. Houston is 4-0 at home and 0-2 on the road, losing the two away games by a combined 58-13.

3. Broncos LB Von Miller has 12.5 sacks in his last eight games, playoffs included.

Monday Night Football Predictions: Houston Texans at Denver Broncos Odds & Picks
by Alan Matthews

I'm not going to delve into the NFL's sagging TV ratings this season again other than to say the Monday Night Football games have largely been blowouts between one decent team and one bad one. Last week's 28-3 Cardinals win over the Jets -- I recommended Arizona -7 and going under the total, so that worked out well -- is a prime example.

Finally, we get an interesting matchup this Monday. It's defending AFC South champion and current leader Houston (4-2) against reigning AFC West champion and current co-leader Denver (4-2). It's an important game for each to potentially earn the No. 2 seed in the AFC playoffs. I'm already conceding the top seed to New England. I would have favored the No. 2 for Pittsburgh before Ben Roethlisberger was ruled out 4-6 weeks with his knee injury. Now that's up for grabs for the potential AFC South and West champions. I'm still not sure either the Texans or Broncos repeat in their divisions, but that's another story.

In reality, however, Monday's game is all about one guy: Brock Osweiler, the most hated NFL player in Denver these days. Of course, he was fully expected to be Peyton Manning's successor in the Mile High City but opted to take more money in Houston in free agency this offseason. There has been a lot of talk behind the scenes that Osweiler left because he was still pouting over being benched in the second half of the Broncos' Week 17 game last season for Manning.

Broncos GM John Elway seemed to indicate that Osweiler didn't want to be there when he delivered this not-so-subtle quote after Osweiler signed with the Texans: "We've stayed true to our philosophy of building a team with players who want to be Denver Broncos and want to be here.''

Texans at Broncos Betting Story Lines

Most NFL players don't begrudge their former teammates for leaving for more money. Hey, it's a business and playing careers are on average very short in the NFL. But here's more proof I think that Osweiler's teammates in Denver didn't like what he did: "We know Brock. He came from here. And we want to kill him. That's just what we want to do," linebacker Brandon Marshall said, while adding there's no ill will. Yeah right. Did you hear Colts guys saying that about Manning when he left for Denver? No.

Did the Texans make the right call in giving him a $75 million deal with $37 million guaranteed and was Denver smart not to match? Thus far I'd say maybe on both ends. Last week, we saw the good and bad Osweiler. Houston did very little offensively for three-and-a-half quarters against the visiting Colts and was in jeopardy of its first home loss. But Osweiler threw a 10-yard TD pass to Lamar Miller with 2:37 to go and then a 26-yard TD pass to C.J. Fiedorowicz for a stunning 23-23 tie at the end of regulation. The Texans would win it 26-23 in OT after an Osweiler 36-yard pass to Jaelen Strong got them into easy field-goal range.

Osweiler's season rating is just 74.1, which is ahead of only benched Blaine Gabbert (49ers) and Ryan Fitzpatrick (Jets). His eight picks are the second-most behind Fitz. Houston has been blown out in two road games and Osweiler was terrible in both -- to be fair, in New England and Minnesota -- maybe the NFL's two best teams.

The Texans will get a key piece back this week in rookie receiver Will Fuller. He was active against the Colts did not play because of a hamstring injury. However, starting cornerback Kevin Johnson, the team's 2015 first-round pick, broke his foot against Indy and is likely done for the year.

As for Elway, he looked fairly smart the first few weeks when 2015 seventh-round pick Trevor Siemian played pretty well in Osweiler's place. But there's a reason Siemian was a seventh-round pick, and that showed last Thursday in a 20-13 loss in San Diego. Siemian threw by far a career-high 50 passes and completed 30 of them but for just 230 yards. That 4.6 yards per attempt, which would be easily worst in the NFL. Other than a four-touchdown game vs. Cincinnati, Siemian hasn't looked like the future under center. That will be first-round pick Paxton Lynch, who started the Week 5 loss to Atlanta when Siemian was out with a shoulder injury. Perhaps Siemian's numbers improve this week with the return of head coach and offensive play-caller Gary Kubiak. He missed the Chargers game for health reasons.

Another reason the Denver offense has struggled in back-to-back games is lack of a running game. C.J. Anderson has done little since Week 2, actually. Kubiak plans to get rookie tailback Devontae Booker to be more involved. On seven touches vs. the Bolts, five carries and two receptions, he had two of the three longest plays of the game for the Broncos.

Broncos offensive tackle Russell Okung suffered a concussion vs. San Diego and No. 2 receiver Emmanuel Sanders a hip injury; Sanders should play this week.

Texans at Broncos Betting Odds and Trends

Denver is -9 (+110) with a total of 40.5. On the moneyline, the Broncos are -325 and the Texans +265. On the alternate lines, the Broncos are -8.5 (+105), -8 (+100), -7.5 (-105), -7 (-125) and -6.5 (-145). Houston is 3-2-1 against the spread (0-2 on road) and 3-3 "over/under" (1-1 on road). Denver is 4-2 ATS (2-1 at home) and 3-3 O/U (2-1 at home).

The Texans are 4-1-1 ATS in their past six after an ATS loss. They are 1-7 ATS in their past eight on Monday. The Broncos are 5-2-1 ATS in their past eight vs. teams with a winning record. They have covered just one of their past eight on Monday. The under is 5-1 in Houston's past six after a win. The under is 5-0 in Denver's past five vs. teams with a winning record.

Texans at Broncos Betting Prediction

Those Denver defenders better be careful on Monday because I'm sure the NFL has let the officials know to be on watch for any funny business on Osweiler. From what I've seen of him on the road, I doubt the Texans can win. But perhaps playing in familiar surroundings will help some. So I'll take the points here. Go over that total only because it's so low. I can see something like 24-17 Broncos.

NFL Week 7 Essentials
By Tony Mejia

Monday, Oct. 24

Houston at Denver: This one is the Brock Osweiler Bowl. Despite largely disappointing, the former Broncos backup has led the Texans to a 4-2 start, putting them atop the AFC South. If you checked out of the Sunday night game early, you were likely shocked when you awoke to news Houston came back to beat the Colts in OT. Osweiler led the comeback, saving his best throws for last, but mostly struggled until the final few drives. He can’t afford a sluggish start on the road against a defense that has made no secret that they would love to tear their former teammate apart. Texans CB Johnathan Joseph (forearm) will play, CB Kareem Jackson (hamstring) is likely but safety Quintin Demps (calf) probably won’t play, so their secondary remains injury-plagued. That’s good news for Trevor Siemian, who looked shaky in a Thursday night road loss at San Diego as the Broncos struggled with protection. Denver has won three of the five meetings since 2004, including a 37-13 rout in Houston in ’13.

Preview: Texans (4-2) at Broncos (4-2)

Date: October 24, 2016 8:30 PM EDT

HOUSTON -- Even with the attention sure to focus squarely on current Houston (and former Denver) quarterback Brock Osweiler, the most pressing concern for the Broncos in advance of their showdown with the Texans on Monday night is regaining the momentum that carried them through an undefeated start by Week 4.

The league went from moderately surprised to wholly accepting of the Broncos' quick dash from the starting gate, simultaneously stunned by how well Trevor Siemian performed in his first few weeks as a starting quarterback in the NFL while reverential toward a defense that continued to pound opponents into submission in a manner matching that from last season's run to the Super Bowl championship.

But consecutive losses to the Falcons at home and the Chargers on the road in a five-day span wiped a bit of the shine off the Broncos (4-2). Almost as hastily as observers acknowledged the Broncos' power following their 27-7 win over the Buccaneers on Oct. 2, the tables have turned to point out their chinks in the armor.

"The last two games for us looked a lot alike unfortunately," said Broncos coach Gary Kubiak, who is back following a one-game illness hiatus. "Very slow starting football games. We corrected ourselves. Defensively played well in the second half. Offensively we've been really struggling up front. We've got to play better."

As is to be expected of a team with a championship pedigree, the Broncos have focused their attention of self-improvement, discussing accountability and communication as the pillars for reconstructing a winning ship. From a technical standpoint the Broncos could stand to do a better job of running the ball, something they did with expertise while beating the Panthers and Colts to open the season.

The Broncos amassed 282 yards and three touchdowns on the ground in recording those opening two victories. In the four contests since they've misplaced that efficiency, going from 4.7 yards per carry in Weeks 1 and 2 to just 3.3 yards per carry in the four subsequent games, totaling 309 yards and one score on 95 rushes.

C.J. Anderson, the Broncos' leading rusher with 330 yards and three touchdowns on 94 carries, and the offensive line will have an opportunity to rediscover their stride against the Texans, who feature the 29th-ranked rushing defense in the NFL.

"The last four weeks, you definitely don't want to put what we put on tape -- especially the last two weeks," Anderson said. "It's a collective thing.

"Us as playmakers, we have to find a way to make more plays. Myself, ... I have to find a way to step out of more tackles just to make those big plays."

Of course Osweiler will serve as the main attraction at Sports Authority Field at Mile High. Osweiler attempted 30 passes over three seasons off the Broncos bench before finally earning playing time last season, parlaying a 5-2 record as a starter into $37 million guaranteed from the Texans as a free agent this past offseason.

Statistically, Osweiler has been inferior to Siemian, who ultimately won the job that was giftwrapped for Osweiler once Peyton Manning retired. And, like the Broncos, the Texans are leaning on the running game to stabilize a shaky offense.

Running back Lamar Miller who, like Osweiler, signed with the Texans as a free agent, rushed for a season-high 149 yards and a touchdown against the Colts last Sunday night. He is third in the AFC in rushing with 520 yards and cemented his standing as the focal point for the Texans with his breakthrough performance in their 26-23 overtime win.

"We had eight plays over 10 yards -- a couple of them that got called back, too," Texans offensive coordinator George Godsey said. "When you're in space and you get past that first level, making that next defender miss. He did that quite a few times. Some of those big plays over 15 yards were not only just the receivers downfield but also him creating some extra lanes there to get a few more extra yards."

But no matter the contributions of Anderson or Miller or the respective run defenses, all eyes will focus on Osweiler. No amount of deflection will change that.

"Bottom line I'm going to treat this game no different than any other game," Osweiler said. "I'm going to prepare the same way, I'm going to prepare extremely hard. I'm going to go out and have a great week of practice and I'm going to understand the challenge ahead of us, but I'll look forward to that challenge."

Week 7 NFL

Texans (4-2) @ Broncos (4-2)— Osweiler returns to Mile High City after bolting for Houston in free agency last winter; he rallied his new team back from down 23-9 with 4:00 left for dramatic win Sunday night, but Houston is 0-2 on road, losing 27-0 in Foxboro, 31-13 in Minnesota (Texans have one TD on 21 drives on road). Kubiak returns to sideline for Denver to face his former team; Broncos are 3-2 in last five series games, with average total of 48.2. Broncos lost last two games after 4-0 start, scoring two TDs on 24 drives after scoring 11 TDs on 41 drives in first four games. Home side won/covered all five Houston games this year; they lost 27-0/31-13 in ugly losses at Foxboro/Minnesota, but those might be two best teams in NFL. Last three Denver games stayed under the total; last three Houston games went over.

KEY STAT: Bury have conceded in each of their last 13 matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Bolton have rediscovered their form after escaping a sticky patch, winning four straight games and they can take this Lancashire derby at Gigg Lane. Tuesday's defeat to Wimbledon means Bury have lost five on the spin and the Shakers have struggled defensively all season long.

RECOMMENDATION: Bolton

EXPERT VERDICT: The League Cup looks to be a much bigger priority for Liverpool compared to Tottenham and that should be highlighted at Anfield. Mauricio Pochettino and his Spurs squad have a busy time with the Champions League fixtures added to their schedule whereas a European-free Liverpool can give this maximum attention.

KEY STAT: United have won only one of the last six Manchester derbies at Old Trafford

EXPERT VERDICT: These old rivals played out a great Premier League contest in September with City beating their Manchester neighbours 2-1 and it could pay to go for goals again at Old Trafford. United were too passive in before the break in contest but improved in the second half which should give them the belief that attack is the best form of defence against City.

RECOMMENDATION: Both teams to score

Preview: Flyers (2-2) at Canadiens (4-0)

Date: October 24, 2016 7:30 PM EDT

MONTREAL -- Feeling confident after a comeback win against the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday, the Philadelphia Flyers will face one of their toughest tests of the young season when they visit the Montreal Canadiens on Monday.

The Flyers (2-2-1) found their offensive groove again with six goals in the win over the Hurricanes and are now averaging 3.8 goals per game. Montreal is averaging four goals, which leads the NHL.

"They have excellent team speed, especially their group of forwards," Flyers coach Dave Hakstol told the Philadelphia Inquirer of the Canadiens. "They play with a lot of pace."

Trailing 2-0 early in the second period on Saturday, the Flyers rallied for four straight before skating away with a 6-3 victory. While winger Jakub Voracek paced the offense with two goals and an assist, rookie defenseman Ivan Provorov came through with two key assists on goals that tied the game and provided Philadelphia with a lead it would never relinquish.

It was a bounce-back night for the 19-year-old after some tough outings on both sides of the puck, helped along by a teammate just one year removed from freshman status.

"He was down after a few games," second-year defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere told CSNPhilly.com. "I didn't really tell him much other than, 'Hey, we've got 79 more of these.' I told him to keep his head up and he'll get over it.

"He's a hell of a player and sometimes you don't get all of the bounces. He's a great player as you guys could see."

The Canadiens extended their winning streak to three games with a 4-1 triumph over the Boston Bruins on Saturday night. But while names like Pacioretty, Radulov, Gallagher and Galchenyuk are the ones teams try to keep a close eye on, it was the unlikely sources who delivered on offense in the latest win.

Philip Danault, Torrey Mitchell and Paul Byron joined Brendan Gallagher on the scoresheet, giving Montreal 13 different players who have scored this season.

"We need that," Canadiens coach Michel Therrien said after the game. "We knew it was a character game, and it really was outstanding (against Boston)."

While Montreal is putting the puck in seemingly with ease, opponents haven't been able to do the same at the other end. Back-up goaltender Al Montoya held the fort through the first three games and Carey Price looks like his old self in two appearances since returning from illness. The result is a league-best 1.60 goals-against average.

It's been a tougher road for the Flyers in their own end, averaging 3.8 goals against. Netminders Steve Mason and Michal Neuvirth carry well-below average statistics into the week, with Mason's 3.35 goals-against average and .882 save percentage holding a slight edge over Neuvirth's 4.24 goals-against and .854 save percentage.

If there's an area that could use improvement on Montreal's end, it's the power play. While the man advantage has looked better than years past under associate coach Kirk Muller's guidance, the team only connected three times on 21 opportunities, tied for sixth-most chances in the NHL.

Former Canadiens forward Dale Weise won't get the chance to face his former team as he serves the second of a three-game suspension for a hit last week.

The Flyers could have fresh legs coming into the line-up this week as defenseman Michael Del Zotto and forward Scott Laughton joined the team for practice on Sunday and will travel to Montreal and partake in the club's morning skate. Both players have been on injured reserve since opening night.

Preview: Flames (1-4) at Blackhawks (3-3)

Date: October 24, 2016 8:30 PM EDT

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Blackhawks are off to an inconsistent start while the Calgary Flames are among the NHL's worst clubs in 2016-17.

Struggles by stars on both teams could explain a lot.

Jonathan Toews will try to help the Blackhawks continue their recent offensive surge at home Monday night when they play host to Johnny Gaudreau and the Flames.

Toews, Chicago's captain, has just two assists in six games after averaging 28 goals and 35 assists during his previous nine NHL seasons. Part of the reason for his slow start may be as simple as letting a relationship with new linemates Tyler Motte and Richard Panik develop.

Motte and Panik each scored in regulation and Toews found the back of the net in the shootout as Chicago (3-3-0) rallied to beat Toronto 5-4 on Saturday night. The Blackhawks scored 16 of their 23 goals in their last three games at the United Center.

Motte, a rookie and a fourth-round pick in the 2013 NHL Draft after a solid career at Michigan, has goals in each of his last two games. In a huge surprise, Panik leads the league with six goals despite taking only nine shots.

If Toews is panicking over his slow start, he's not showing it.

"You only get better and better when you really start understanding and really knowing everything (about your linemates)," he told the Chicago Sun-Times. "It just becomes feel. Sometimes you have to just go out there and let things happen, and use your instincts. That really kicks in with guys that you play with for a long time."

Toews, though, has only one goal and four assists in his last nine matchups with the Flames (1-4-1), who are waiting for Gaudreau to start putting together numbers like he did last season.

Through six games, Gaudreau has a goal and two assists but is also a team-worst minus-7. Last season, Gaudreau was sixth in the league in scoring with 78 points on 30 goals and 48 assists, and he was rewarded Oct. 10 with a six-year extension worth a reported $40.5 million.

Gaudreau has one assist in three career games at the United Center.

Another key offseason acquisition is key to the Flames' lackluster start under new coach Glenn Gulutzan. Goaltender Brian Elliott, who helped St. Louis eliminate the Blackhawks in seven games during the opening round of last season's Western Conference playoffs, has yet to win in any of his three starts this season while posting a 4.72 goals-against average and .839 save percentage.

Elliott didn't face his former team on Saturday night in the Flames' 6-4 loss to the Blues. He also could sit when Calgary caps its road trip Tuesday night in St. Louis.

"He's a confident guy. He's a well-structured guy. We know he'll be fine," Flames captain Mark Giordano told the Calgary Sun. "When he gets back in there, I'm sure the players will be looking to shut it down and really tighten up defensively, because we haven't really given him a game where he's had much of a chance."

Calgary's 27 goals allowed are most in the league. Chicago is only slightly better than the Flames with 22 goals given up.

Corey Crawford, who didn't play in the win over the Maple Leafs, is 4-2-3 with a 2.67 GAA and .895 save percentage versus the Flames. Scott Darling was 2-0-1 versus Calgary last season, stopping 91 of 95 shots.

Grand Salami - October

The Grand Salami in pro hockey is decided by adding up all the goals scored in every game scheduled for that particular day. You can wager on 'over' or 'under' the Grand Salami total. The total is set by adding up all listed 'over/under' odds for each game on that particular day.

Note: The Grand Salami will have no action if any game is suspended or cancelled before the regulation time of three twenty minute periods. Also, regardless of the number of goals scored during the shoot out portion of the overtime, the final scored recorded for the game will give the winning team on more goal than its opponent based on the score at the end of regulation time.

*The majority of sportsbooks do not put out a total on the Grand Salami when there is only one game on the card. For tracking purposes, we will continue to show the 'over/under' for goals and combined goals scored on days with just one game.
