Monday 07/20/09 service plays chatter/comps/requests & gm strategy...

-------------------------------------------------------------------

FYI, let's limit the comps to the first 2 pages, I need this thread to be utilized for chatter and what games members would like to pick up or split. Service thread getting way to much chatter. Ty.

OF MLB ACTION IN JULY

12-0 Run with Top-Rated MLB

+229 Dime Run L3 Weeks

Somethings up.. If he's so confident and he's GUARANTEEING this play, why is it only 30 Dimes? He has 20 Dimers like every other day, and has had 30 dimers too..

He had a 100 dime play earlier this year that he prolly hopes we all forgot (I followed that into the slaughter house.. It was Cardinals run line and they lost like 8-1 er 11-1 or something.. Pathetic..)

BUT, he is on fire and it's still a pretty big play.. Should be interesting to see what he's up to here..

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets

San Francisco Giants at Atlanta Braves (-160, 8)

Most fans will look at the string of zeros Jonathan Sanchez has put up lately - a no-hitter in his last start, 12 scoreless innings overall, the opponent failing to score in the last three games where he has appeared.

Here's a different string of zeros - the number of wins Sanchez has in seven road starts this season, going 0-7 with a 6.27 ERA.

While the mandatory Vander Meer Watch will be on Sanchez, there's something else to keep an eye on. The three games this season in which he's allowed five or more walks have all come on the road, and five of the seven homers he served up have also been away from home.

Pick: Atlanta -160

Milwaukee Brewers at Pittsburgh Pirates (-116, 9.5)

Does anybody want to play for the Pirates?

Trapped in another season of going nowhere, the Pirates are last in the NL Central and haven't finished above .500 since their last postseason appearance in 1992. This season-long skid was punctuated by Sunday's news that Freddy Sanchez and Jack Wilson rejected multi-year contract extensions without making a counteroffer.

"They are not interested in even the foundation that we've laid," Pirates GM Neal Huntington told MLB.com. "The response is such that they don't even feel we are in the same ballpark because they feel like years, dollars, the foundation is so far off their expectations that it's not worth countering."

This will step up efforts by Huntington to trade Sanchez and Wilson, who could be free agents at the end of the season. Sanchez can activate a 2010 option with plate appearances, but Wilson will be gone.

Pittsburgh's first sign of surrender this season came with the June trade of young outfielder Nate McLouth to Atlanta. At the time, several Pirates players, including Sanchez, questioned the team's commitment to winning.

Now the Pirates take the latest business bombshell into a home game vs. the Milwaukee Brewers, who have beaten Pittsburgh 17 straight times.

Pick: Milwaukee +108

Streaking and Slumping Pitchers

Streaking

Rodrigo Lopez (Philadelphia Phillies)

How long Lopez remains in the rotation may depend on two factors: When Pedro Martinez says he is ready to pitch, and how well Lopez continues to pitch.

The right-hander missed all of last season following Tommy John surgery in 2007 and began this year in the minors. But in both his starts this month, Lopez has pitched effectively, limiting baserunners and keeping the ball inside Citizens Bank Park.

Last week, the Phillies signed Martinez, who could bump Lopez from the rotation. Lopez, who left his last start with an achy shoulder, would have two or three starts before Martinez is expected to be ready.

"Whatever happens, I think it's something I can't control," Lopez told the team's website. "But trying to pitch good and being healthy, that's the thing I can control."

Sean O'Sullivan (Los Angeles Angels)

The rookie right-hander has a brief body of work since being called up from the minor leagues earlier this year. But he hasn't lost yet and neither have the Angels when he takes the mound.

The team has won all four starts made by the 21-year-old O'Sullivan, who has picked up two wins and worked at least five innings each outing. He has helped stabilize a rotation hit hard by injuries this season.

O'Sullivan has also received 28 runs of support, although, he has not needed nearly that much. He worked as a favorite for the first time in his last start.

Returning

Jason Schmidt (Los Angeles Dodgers)

There are comebacks, and then there are comebacks like the one Schmidt is making. Schmidt hasn't pitched in the majors since June 16, 2007. He has been out of baseball for so long that baseball-reference.com has a mention of his "final game" on his career stats page.

The 36-year-old right-hander was a three-time All-Star and twice finished in the top five in NL Cy Young voting in five-plus seasons in San Francisco, going 78-37. He signed with the Dodgers after the 2006 season but made just six starts before needing right shoulder surgery for a torn labrum and frayed biceps tendon.

In five starts at Triple-A Albuquerque this year, Schmidt was 2-0 with a 3.94 ERA.

"Velocity-wise, we all know he's not what he once was," Dodgers manager Joe Torre told the Los Angeles Times. "His experience in knowing how to pitch is something that he's going to have really rely on."

Slumping

Gil Meche (Kansas City Royals)

A month ago, Meche was riding a streak of 16 scoreless innings. In his next start, he was pounded for nine runs while getting just 10 outs and has been in a freefall ever since.

The Royals are 1-4 in the last five games started by Meche, who during that span has a staggering WHIP of 2.07 (31 hits, 18 walks, 23 2-3 IP).

Even more alarming is the nine homers Meche has given up in that stretch. He allowed just two in his first 14 starts.

Kyle Lohse (St. Louis Cardinals)

You can't spell Lohse without l-o-s-e.

The Cardinals are 1-6 in the last seven starts by the right-hander, who spent more than a month on the disabled list with a forearm injury before returning July 12. The lone win in that stretch was over punchless Kansas City nearly two months ago.

Lohse has also been prone to the long ball. He gave up one homer in 32 innings in April but has allowed seven in his last 29 1-3 innings. The total has gone over in five of his last six starts.

San Francisco Giants vs. Atlanta Braves Atlanta Braves
-1½+130 at BOOKM > 12h.

ATL -1.5 (+134): The Braves are playing very good baseball lately winning 7 out of last 10 games overall and 3-1 at home!! Early in the season the bats had not been very good for the Braves but in the last 4 games they are averaging 6 runs per game. Today they turn to there young ace Hanson who is 4-0 since coming up from the minors in 7 games. He has allowed less than 2 runs per game and at home has been nearly unhittable. On the other side SFG have been very good lately overall but on the road they have struggled. In fact in July they are only 1-4 on the road and in that time period they are only averaging 1.7 runs per game on road!! Pitching has been very good all year but on the road they are not nearly as good. Sanchez goes for SF today and is coming off a complete game no hitter before the break. But don't be fooled he is not good on road going 0-7 this year with a 6.27 ERA. Hanson dominates today and wins in a blowout!! SCORE ATL 7 - SFG 1

Milwaukee Brewers vs. Pittsburgh Pirates Pittsburgh Pirates
-116 at JAMAICA > 12h.
At 7:05pm our complimentary selection is on the Pittsburgh Pirates over the Milwaukee Brewers. Pirate righthander and currently #4 starter Ross Ohlendorf, is no doubt glad to be opening up his second half with a start at home in PNC Park. Ohlendorf's last two starts before the break were on the road at Florida and Philly and the 26-year-old did not pitch well in either of those. But in his last three starts in front of the home faithful (albeit certainly not that many home faithful in Pittsburgh these days), Ohlendorf is 2-0 and has only surrendered three earned runs in 20 innings. And more importantly, the Pirates are 4-0 in Ohlendorf's last four home starts. Journeyman righthanded reliever-turned-starter Mike Burns will get another start for Milwaukee as Dave Bush continues to recover from a triceps injury that landed him on the DL almost a month ago. Burns seems to be alternating good and bad starts, and after beating the Dodgers with five strong innings in his last start, Burns would appear to be in line for another sub-par effort tonight. Brewers All-Star outfielder Ryan Braun was hit on the hand by a pitch on Friday night and is having trouble gripping the bat and although he played on Sunday, he was not effective in an 0-for-4 effort at the plate. Despite an overall record well under .500, the Pirates have been very tough at home this season (24-18). Take Pittsburgh. As always, good luck...Al McMordie.

Arizona D-Backs vs. Colorado Rockies Colorado Rockies
-136 at JAMAICA > 13h.
The Rockies return home off a four-game road trip where took three out of four games from the Padres with a 6 to 1 win on Sunday to take the series. They will host the Arizona Diamondbacks in a three-game series in the Mile High City with the first game set for Monday night and the first pitch scheduled for 8:40PM EST. The Diamondbacks are ranked 28th in the league in hitting with a batting average of .247 and averaging 4.3 runs per game this season. They will face a Rockies pitching staff that is ranked 16th in the league with an ERA of 4.29 and an opponent batting average of .266. Colorado will send Jorge De La Rosa to the bump with his 6-7 W/L record and ERA of 5.08 on the season. Over his last three outings he is a perfect 3-0 W/L with an ERA of 2.21 including a 5 to 0 win over this Diamondbacks team back on July 3rd where he threw 8 innings allowing no earned runs with four hits and six strikeouts. De La Rosa is 12-2 W/L (+10.4) when playing against a team with a win percentage of 38 percent to 46 percent over the last three years. The Rockies are ranked 18th in hitting with a batting average of .258 averaging 5.0 runs per game this season. Their runs per game increase to 5.6 when they take the field at Coors with a batting average of .278. Colorado will face a Diamondbacks pitching staff that is ranked 18th in the league with an earned run average of 4.30 and opponents have a batting average of .265 and an OBP of .330 against them this season. Arizona will send Doug Davis to the hill with his 4-9 W/L record and ERA of 3.41 this season. Arizona is 5-14 W/L in all his starts including 2-6 W/L when he takes the mound on the road. Over his last three starts Davis is 1-1 W/L with an ERA of 4.15 and the Diamondbacks are 1-2 W/L overall during that span. Arizona is 39-53 W/L (-16.34) this season including 28-37 W/L (-9.4) when playing under the lights and 9-16 W/L (-9.5) when facing left-handed starters. Data base research has uncovered three MLB Systems that are active for tonight’s game. Play ON any MLB team with a starting pitcher who gives up 5.5 or less hits per start with a starting pitcher who has an ERA of >=6.50 over his last ten starts, 62-39 W/L (+41.4) since 1997. If our Play ON team is at home the record is 38-19 W/L (+27.5) since 1997. Finally we want to Play ON MLB Home Teams who average five or more runs per game against a starting pitcher who has an ERA of 3.70 or better and an ERA of 2.50 or better over his last three starts, 41-11 W/L (+27.4) the last five seasons. Our TPR Index projects a Rockies win in this game by 2.4 runs over the Diamondbacks and our Math Model also favors the host by 1.87 runs. We will lay the chalk as the Rockies continue their solid play and get a game one victory over the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night in the Mile High City.

Colorado Rockies (-136)
Mon Jul 20 '09 8:40p

The Rockies are looking to advantage of a favorable post all-star game schedule as they open a series at home against the Diamondbacks.

Colorado took three out of four against the Padres this weekend and they’ll look to continue their winning ways against a struggling Arizona team that just traded its top hitter.

It’s doubtful the Rock’s will take the D-Backs lightly. Since June 4, Colorado is 30-10 at home however two of the losses came to Arizona. While the Rockies enjoyed their stay in San Diego, the Snakes lost two out of three in St. Louis and traded Felipe Lopez (.301 average) to Milwaukee for a pair of minor leaguers.

The Diamondbacks’ .247 team batting average this season is second-worst in the NL behind San Diego’s .232, and they’ve averaged only 2.2 runs in Doug Davis’ last seven outings. The veteran lefty is 4-9 with a solid 3.41 ERA with an even better ERA on the road at 3.15. He’s 2-4 record in his career against Colorado with a 3.72 ERA.

The Rockies have lost 24 of its last 36 home matchups with Arizona - including two of three July but tonight’s starter Jorge De La Rosa has won both of his previous starts vs. the Diamondbacks including a four-hit gem in a 5-0 victory on July 3rd.

Keep in mind this not the same Diamondback club of two months ago or even two days ago. The loss of Lopez leaves a big hole at the top of the lineup. Meanwhile the Rockies have feasted off left-handed pitching this season hitting a whopping .315.

Colorado starts the night eight games behind the first-place Dodgers but only a half game behind the wild-card leading Giants. Look for Jim Tracy and the Rockies to keep the foot on the gas against an Arizona teams that has waived the white flag and are thinking about next year.

(905) CHICAGO CUBS
(906) PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES
Take "Under"

All pitch, no hit, that's what you can call the Cubbies these days. Lucky for the Cubs that good pitching and solid defense can win games, evidenced by Chicago being just two games back of NL Central front runner, St Louis. The Cubs have managed to stay close despite an offense that produces just 4.16 runs per game (fourth worst in the NL). The Cubs also have the third worst batting average in the NL (.248). Today's matchup features a pair of good starters. Ted Lilly for the Cubs has a 3.18 ERA on the season and is 2-1 in his last three starts with a 2.11 ERA. Rodrigo Lopez makes just his third appearance this year, but has been very good with a 3.18 ERA, just two walks and eight KO's in his 11 1/3 innings of work. Look for a tight game here on Monday and an UNDER play!

NASCAR heat: Stars run strong at Brickyard

After a rare week off, the NASCAR Sprint Cup season resumes this week with the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard, the circuit's annual trip to Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Here are six drivers to watch:

Jimmie Johnson (+500)

The three-time defending series champion has won this race twice in the last three years, using the victory as a springboard to his late-season push for the championship. In those wins, he started fifth and first, so qualifying could be a key. He's currently third in the points and very much in the hunt for a fourth straight title.

Jeff Gordon (+700)

Gordon is the all-time leader with four Brickyard wins but none since 2004. He has won just once this season but has been no lower than second in the standings since the second race of the season and is looking for his fifth career series title.

Mark Martin (+700)

The veteran Martin is getting better with age. His four wins this season, including last week at Chicago, lead all Sprint Cup drivers. However, he also has five finishes of 35th or worse, which has him 11th in the Chase for the Championship. He has never won at the Brickyard.

Tony Stewart (+600)

Stewart is the points leader and won this event in 2005 and 2007. He also has plenty of Brickyard experience from his days as an IRL driver. He climbed to the top of the standings without winning a race but has won twice in the last six races.

Kyle Busch (+800)

Busch used to be hated for his lack of race decorum, but now rivals hate him because he is winning, too. He has three victories this year but none since May 2. In his last nine races, he only has two Top-10 finishes. Busch is looking for his first win at the Brickyard.

Joey Logano (+9000)

Just a teenager, Logano is in his first full season in Sprint Cup. But he already has chalked up a win at New Hampshire last month. This is his first trip to the Brickyard, which can be a bit overwhelming.

Under the total

Play the Cardinals and Astros to go under the total as these two teams have 77 overs and 98 unders this year. In the last 12 meetings in Houston there have been 8 unders, 3 overs and a push. There have been 13 unders, 5 overs and a push in the last 19 between the two teams.

Look for an under on Monday.

Tonight's FREE winner comes from Arlington as we play the home-standing Rangers as they host the Red Sox.

I know the Red Sox have dominated the Rangers over the last few years, but things seemed to change back in early July when Texas went to Fenway Park and took two of three from Boston. Included in that series was a wonderful start from the Rangers' Kevin Millwood, also tonight's starter.

Millwood (8-7, 3.46 ERA) is an impressive 6-1 in front of the home fans with a 2.49 ERA. On June 5, he held the Red Sox to one unearned run in seven innings of the 5-1 Texas victory at Fenway. He hasn't pitched since July 11, so he's had plenty of time to get over his worst two starts of the season when he lost at the Angels and at the Mariners to end the first half.

John Smoltz (1-2, 5.40) is making just his fifth start with the Red Sox and he's given up five runs in two of the four outings with Boston going 1-3 in the four appearances.

The Rangers are 20-7 in Millwood's last 27 home starts, 11-5 when he faces A.L. East teams and 7-1 when he opens a series.

The Red Sox got shut down Sunday by Roy Halladay and the Blue Jays, 3-1. While Millwood isn’t Halladay, he will hit his spots, especially at home.

I love the way Millwood goes about his work. He'll keep Texas in it and the offense will do the rest and light up Smoltz.
Play the Rangers.
