The Moderators Cup went off Saturday Night amid controvesy and the race itself brought Drama before, during and after the result. The controvesy was the Stewards deciding to black out the Event on the RX Forum, a move which was consistantly critised by all true Sportsmen, Although this was the talking point before the race, it was almost forgotten afterwards.
The scratching of Lander wasnt an issue but the withdrawal of 7/2 2nd Fav Dante brought howls from the crowd, many who thought he wasnt given enough time to enter the gate. However, to the experienced eye it was obvious from his Coltish behavior, his mind was on other things. A big drifter in the market was Wilheim who was sweating profusely down at the start.
The race itself went off at break-neck pace, Journeyman and Sportsavant determined to get the lead, Fishhead and Oldmanted tucked in behind. The wide running of TTinco was compounded when for no reason , he slipped up and fell on the second bend, badly hampering a settled Wilheim. Turning into the home straight, the Two front-runners were being whipped and the jockeying for position behind lead to disaster as Fishhead clipped the heels of one in front and not for the first time in his career, faltered badly and lost his chance. All of a sudden the race was left to Oldmanted, a West Coast wiseguy play which with the withdrawal paid a paltry 7/4. Missing all the mayhem and finishing strongly in his first Group race was Robfunk, at a generous 600/1, followed by a weakening Sportsavant, 12/1 who will be a bigger player next year.
The Drama didnt end there as an objection to the winner by connections of Sportsavant for interference caused panic among the throngs of punters that were celebrating their win. This was nothing to what happened next. Veteran Oldmanted collapsed entering the winners enclosure and people close to his organisation wept openly thinking they had given him too much to do. After a couple of frightful minutes huge cheers went up as he rose to his feet, only being slightly winded.
The Evenings last memory was the cries from the hoards of followers to have a Photo of all participants that they could use as wallpaper on their PCs.:drink:
