Mike Tyson has filed for bankruptcy in an attempt to "bring order" to his muddled finances. The former world heavyweight champion has earned an estimated $300M during his turbulent 18-year career but appears to have squandered it all.
"As a professional fighter who relied on others to manage his affairs, he discovered that his debts far exceeded his assets," confirmed his attorney Debra Grassgreen. "Now he has taken the lead in bringing order to his financial affairs."
Tyson earned around £15m alone for his world title fight against Lennox Lewis 14 months ago and was almost certainly the first fighter to pass the £100m mark in career earnings.
But he had hitherto taken a back seat in the management of his fortune and numerous costly lawsuits - some brought by him and others brought against him - have contributed substantially to his problems.
Earlier this year, for example, he agreed to pay his ex-wife, Monica, $6.5m from future earnings in a divorce settlement.
He also frittered away millions on mansions, cars, Bengal tigers and extravagant gifts for his entourage.
Aside from his financial difficulties, Tyson could also face a new jail term if convicted of assault after an incident in a hotel in Brooklyn, New York, in June. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges. - PA
