In case anyone was unaware, Australia's greatest ever rock band came out of retirement last weekend to headline a major benefit concert in Melbourne.

They looked and sounded in top form. Here's the first two numbers ("Redneck Wonderland" and "Read About It") from their set:

Wow....Never heard a thing about it. Was this for sure just a one off for the benefit? Would love for this to lead to a tour of some sort.

Thanks for the post.

saw them years ago in australia and would have to say along with faith no more in their prime(angeldust period)they were the heaviest and loudest band i had ever seen...they did a song called golden age(i believe it was from the aptly titled album golden age) and the stage shook(i was backstage)...at one of australia's big day out festivals...absolutely insane and tight...so much energy..great to hear they are back

I don't think it will lead to a tour. Peter Garrett is currently a member of Parliament (Minister of the Environment). I think he's commited to that.
The last time they played was the WaveAid benefit for Tsunami victims.

They did two full warmup shows in Canberra in preparation for the benefit. The "Sound Relief" set was about 50 minutes. This was the setlist for Sound Relief.

01. Intro
02. Redneck Wonderland
03. Read About It
04. Blue Sky Mine
05. Advance Australia Fair
06. One Country
07. Beds Are Burning
08. King Of The Mountain
09. The Dead Heart
10. The Power and The Passion
11. Best of Both Worlds
12. Encore Break
13. Sometimes

I only knew about it because I belong to the bootleg site "dimeadozen.org" and an FM version was posted there (as well as a DVD version of the televised broadcast). There are more youtube videos available for most of the other numbers.

Here's some information about the benefit gig(s) that was held on the 14th:

"The devastation of the current Victorian bushfires has left few unaffected. In response to our nation's greatest ever natural disaster Australia's music community have banded together for two stadium benefit concerts scheduled to run simultaneously in both Melbourne and Sydney on Saturday March 14, 2009 under the unified banner of SOUND RELIEF.

Michael Gudinski, Managing Director of The Frontier Touring Company said;
"The Sound Relief concerts are for the survivors of the bushfires. The sad reality is that rebuilding their lives and communities will be a lengthy and costly process. It has been phenomenal seeing everyone pull together in this horrific time. Without doubt these concerts will be once in a lifetime events that will live on in the memories of everyone who attends."

Michael Chugg, Managing Director of Chugg Entertainment said;
"Around the world, some of the words that are used to describe Australians include "big hearted", "generous", "battlers" and "troopers". These concerts will honour all of those characteristics of the Australian people, both those who have suffered so much through this terrible tragedy, but also saluting the heroes who fought against the fires, and the courageous people whose fight is just beginning. With the help of the Australian Music Community, these concerts hope to bring people together, not just on the hallowed turf of the MCG and SCG, but around the country as we share the joy of live music. We will remember those who have lost so much, and celebrate the heroes of this devastating story."

Both concerts will be held in their city's most iconic venue; in Melbourne at the MCG and in Sydney at the SCG.
Some of Australia's most legendary artists will be joined by leading International and Domestic chart-toppers. In city by city alphabetical order the line-ups are:

MELBOURNE
Augie March
Bliss N Eso with Paris Wells
Gabriella Cilmi
Hunters & Collectors
Kasey Chambers & Shane Nicholso with Troy Cassar-Daly

Looking at the lineups for both Melbourne and Sydney, Wolfmother is listed for both venues. A perusal of the Youtube videos available for them at Sound Relief shows numerous audience vids from both locations. Apparently, they gave a little extra effort.

Speaking of Brooklyn, I went to one of Ian Hunter's rare U.S. gigs in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn about 15 months ago. That area was happening.

That number is definitely in my top 5 by them (probably top 3). I have a high quality recording of their whole Sound Relief set and they sound better than ever.

Here's another number that they did at the benefit gig. Since there aren't any good complete videos of that available and because I like this version better, this one's from 1993 performed at a free show in support of anti-logging protesters at Clayoquot Sound in British Columbia, Canada. Obviously the guys are 15+ years younger.

Blue Sky Mine

There's some pretty cool audience shot videos available from the 2 warmup gigs in Canberra. Here's 1 of them from the night before Sound Relief.

Wrong! Popularity and sales do not necessarily equate to being better. I love AC/DC but they are bascially one dimensional and there isn't much depth to their lyrics. It really isn't even a close call.

agreed, my favorite Australian rockers would be the Hoad brothers -formerly known as Kings of the Sun in the 80's or now as the Rich & Famous

But anyway I do own a Midnight Oil CD (Scream in Blue Live) and for some reason I pulled it out last week and was listening to it so I do like some of their stuff too
