The only difference is the Ducks and Devils didn't have the offensive talent or weapons such as Crosby and Malkin on their rosters when they were notorius for playing the boring style of game known as the 'trap'. Now last night when the Penguins managed to jump ahead of the hometwon Flyers, Mich Therian decided it was time to orchestrate the 'trap'. When all is said and done however and even though they lost the contest, the Flyers brass may want to consider Therian's tactics as a sort of compliment!
The question is quite simply how long will the two main and probably only Penguin offensive guns Syd 'the kiddie' Crosby and Evgeni 'the russian' Malkin put up with that nonsense before they begin complaining. I would venture to say not too long; in fact I would bet on it to be quite frank. These two guys are the heart and soul of this team and to think they are going to be told to hold back on their offensive talent for the purpose of a 'trap game' won't sit for long.
I would never have thought the Penguins, even though they managed the win last night playing their boring style of game, would acknowledge the offensive threat of their arch rival Flyers that much in order to play that style of game, especially considering the league's top two scorers are a part of their own roster. Actually if you're a Flyer fan, it's somewhat intriguing.
By the same token I wonder what the Pittsburgh media will be saying or writing following a couple of Penguin losses based on this ridiculous style of so-called boring strategy, one that will either keep fans away from the rinks or for those that attend, put them fast asleep in their seats.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Oh and one final note relating to this topic, can you imagine 'Slats' playing the 'trap' back in the early eighties with the like of Gretz and Mess?
:nohead:
