Michael Sam will step away from professional football, he announced via Twitter on Friday night.

Sam, the 25-year-old who began the season with the CFL's Montreal Alouettes, cited a tumultuous past year for leaving football at this time.

The Alouettes confirmed in a release that Sam has left the club for "personal reasons" and that he has been added to the team's suspended list.

Sam made the announcement in a series of three tweets.

The last 12 months have been very difficult for me, to the point where I became concerned with my mental health. Because of this I am 1/3

Sam, the first openly gay player to drafted into the NFL, agreed to a two-year deal with the Alouettes this summer. He left training camp June 12, citing personal reasons, and sat out the team's first five games. He failed to record a tackle in his Alouettes debut Aug. 7.

Sam, the 2013 SEC defensive player of the year at Missouri, was selected in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL draft by the St. Louis Rams, did not make the team, and spent some time on the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad before being released.

Being an open gay football player in the NFL IMO is the worst......I know there would be other guys in the league that would want to literally hurt him during a game because of his sexuality.......

Football is a sport that brings a lot of anger, & the last place he would want to be is a football field.

I wish him luck in the future, but I'm glad he's not in the NFL, I hated seeing articles about him just because he's gay.

Michael Sam is retiring because he isn't good enough. Now he is going to use his pole smoker gay fame to try to host some BS talkshow or something. Mental health, please. Why not remove your name from the NFL draft because of mental health issues

Over the last two days Darren Rovell has tweeted out support for the gay athlete only to receive backlash and he had to lock down the tweets.

He said in one it's too bad Michael Sam didn't do well in the NFL as it would've been a great story. The response from his followers? Why don't you wish all late-round draft picks good luck?
