Mike Shula who is offensive coordinator for the undefeated Carolina Panthers has been contacted
about his interest to become head football coach for the Canes. Shula, who spent 4 years as head
coach at Alabama would be a great choice in my opinion. Yes, he was overmatched and not ready
for the Bama job but if he wants to get back into the college game...my take is this would be a great
opportunity for him.

gotta think he'll be up for an NFL head coaching job though.....and Shula wouldnt be able to leave until mid-January at the very earliest, missing out on key recruiting over the winter. guess we'll see if he wants back in college.

Excellent points sdf. My first thoughts when I heard Miami's interest.

Greenie, Miami has a lot of disadvantages with stadium, facilities and a sorry ass president.

BUT...right guy with all the talent down in South Florida...whooo Nelly.

Personally, I would like to see what Shula could do. Being a Bama fan, he was a nice
quarterback for us and a really good guy. As sdf said...his interest may be a head coach
in the NFL.

Some are saying Bama OC Lane Kiffin would be a good hire. Fun to speculate...I guess.

Al, you are right...great if Mark wanted to extend his coaching career.

My view is Richt has run his course and ready to do something else.

He and his wife now have the money to help others....seems a mission both are interested
in.

The Miami Hurricane football program has a fascinating history that unfolded between scandals (many) and national championships, several (5 to be exact). When you look at the string of successful coaches that has passed through Coral Gables, it shouldn't surprise anyone that it would be a job coveted by many who want to move on to the National Stage.

The recruiting possibilities are endless (you don't have travel far to fill-up your roster with "blue chippers", South Florida alone is loaded). Quarterbacks: Over the years Miami Football always had the "pick-of-the-litter", the list of past All-American and Heisman winner QB's will attest to that. The weather alone "seals the deal" with many recruits not to mention the amount of "bare flesh" the honeys on Campus are able to expose year-around.....talk about distractions.

I would encourage any coach who is considering taking the Miami job to seek an advanced degree in Psychology, your going to need it.

I can say with 100% percent certainty that Mike Shula was made for the NFL. Miami would be making a huge mistake and for anyone not to investigate how Mike handled his tenure at Alabama off the field is almost criminal, and I'm talking about "football" off the field.....what it takes to win in College Football. Just as a I feel that Nick Saban's best strengths make him a great college football coach, Mike Shula's best strengths make him a better NFL Coach.

The deal with Georgia is this IMO........Kirby Smart is gone after this year, either to Virginia Tech or South Carolina. Georgia knows it, and thus they are exercising their options and thus the rumors. It could happen...Richt being gone. If Georgia ever wanted to hire Smart, they have to do it now because Smart is leaving Alabama. May end up not being the guy they want in the end but to your point, it seems like perfect time to talk to him.

My .02

I think the final 3 candidates are

1) Mario Cristobal (my pick)- former canes OL and has great ties to the high school coaches in south fla
2) Butch Davis- stud recruiter, alumni players love him. Downside is that he is 65 yrs old and always leaves team in a scandal
3) Schiano- was an asst coach w/ miami before he took job w/ rutgers.

Personally, I could see Shula be a candidate for the dolphins head coaching job

My vote is for Christobal......and I will not shed any light on as to why in a negative manner. I will simply say that he has many ties in Florida and is a damn good recruiter. If he could build the right team around him, he would be successful. Kiffin would be a good hire too.....his wife loves the beach. Guy has learned alot about how to manage a football team and has done himself well by staying out of the limelight.

i would be surprised if it's not Cristobal.

solid canes ties (2 national titles and assoc HC)
deep knowledge of south florida recruiting (Calvin Ridley committed to him at Bama over Miami)
some success as HC taking 0-12 FIU to 8-5 (and some failure)
spanish speaking for community outreach & press conference and his family wants to be there

negative for me is he is lead recruiter for several uncommitted guys that have Bama in final 2-3 schools for 2016 so I'll root for Mike Shula or Chudzinski to get the gig :)

All 3 of you nailed it. If it's not Cristobal it will be a shock.

He's been at Bama for several years now and has seen what it takes to lead a successful program. Additionally, he got a raw deal at FIU. That place is a death sentence for any coach and why they fired him is a joke.

He needs a commitment from the administration to pay decent salaries to his assistants....and he needs to bring in a solid OC. With the Miami recruiting base, if he can win most of the recruiting battles he'll do fine.

They also need someone that will help them build an on or near campus stadium. Despite all the talent, I don't think they'll ever get to where they were w/o the facilities, specifically an on campus or near campus stadium. Even the old Orange Bowl was only filled for big games. Also the rise of the SEC, and the other FLA programs (UCF, USF) have robbed UM of some of the talent.
