Hurricanes athletic director Blake James made the announcement Sunday evening. Tight ends coach and run game coordinator Larry Scott will serve as interim head coach.
"Coach Golden has led our program through some very difficult times and he has done so with class, integrity and a true desire to see our students succeed on the field, in the classroom and in the community," James said in a release. "However, we have a proud tradition of excellence at Miami, not just in football but in all sports, and we want to compete for ACC and national championships. I simply believe that now is the time to bring the Hurricane Family together and rally behind our young men."

Golden was 32-25 (17-18 in the ACC) in his four-plus seasons in Coral Gables, but a 58-0 home loss Saturday to undefeated Clemson proved to be the end of his tenure. Miami is just 4-3 this season, one year after going 6-7 despite having seven players who were eventually selected in the 2015 NFL draft.
Golden also went 0-5 against rival Florida State during his tenure.

Fans had been flying banners attached to planes above Miami games throughout this season, imploring Miami to fire Golden. Former Hurricanes players were regularly vocal in their disapproval of Golden.

Golden shepherded the Miami program through two years of self-imposed bowl bans (2011, 2012) and under the cloud of an NCAA scandal in light of the Nevin Shapiro case. Golden had been hired from Temple in December of 2010.

The NCAA ultimately docked Miami nine total scholarships over the 2014-16 seasons, during which time the entire athletic program has been on probation.
"On behalf of my family I want to thank the University of Miami for a tremendous opportunity," Golden said in a release. "I believe in what we are doing and how we are doing it and we have some outstanding young men in our football program. Though this moment is difficult, we wish the Canes the best of luck going forward."

This guy is a lousy game coach and was never a fit for Miami. He should go back to Mid American or something.

The Miami (Hurricane) coaching job is a tough act to follow when you consider all their past success (5 claimed National Championships) under the likes of such coaches as Pete Elliot, Andy Gustafson, Lou Saban, Howard Schnellenberger, Jimmie Johnson, Dennis Erickson, Butch Davis Larry Coke et al. Historically, quite the program...........

However IMHO they shouldn't be allowed any scholarships at all for 2 or 3 years to pay for their ADs (Paul Dee) cheatin' ways. He's dead now and I'll bet his body has decomposed early. He was already rotten through and through when he was alive.

I believe in a ripple effect that comes around for years after a disaster. And that Paul Dee was. He is probably the one man most responsible for the USC investigation fiasco and Todd McNair's present lawsuit vs the NCAA. Paul Dee was put in charge of that by the NCAA enforcement and investigation detail. Essentially to incriminate USC in ways that resulted in major violations, Dee made McNair his patsy and ruined his career. Did Dee actually think he could get away with something like that and McNair would just take it laying down? Miami's AD was a moron. Since his own football department was one of the worst cases of a school that showed no regard for NCAA recruiting restrictions it was ironic that he would be given the power to bring down USC. I absolutely hate cronyism and the NCAA is strife with it. So now Miami has major issues. Yep... I do believe in the ripple effect.

I'm originally from Miami and one of my degrees is from the "U." The Hurricanes, under Golden, were underachievers and always unprepared. When you see all of the kids under Golden's watch getting drafted into the NFL, it's pretty clear they weren't coached well while in school. Golden was the equivalent to the Fins' Joe Philbin IMO. No real passion and his vanilla demeanor grated me. Let's face it, this guy was in way over his head. Yes, he was saddled with the fiasco with Shapiro, etc. However, he was always out-coached and he rarely motivated his players. Also, I hated the fact this guy would wear a tie on game-day and absolutely no Cane gear. Cosmetic? Yes,I know it has nothing to do with coaching. However, show the fans and alumni you give a shit. Wear the school colors for God's sake! The football field on game-day is NOT a corporate setting.

Funny thing, my other alma mater, USC, just went through the same thing with Sark. He also was in way over his head. He's gone. The Trojan football team is now playing their asses off for Clay Helton, so I hope he remains there. They love him. As an alum, I think he's the best candidate. Just my opinion.

Golden was making a little over $2.5 per year. The next head coach at the U will get that or more if the school expects to attract a dynamic motivator, recruiter, and coaching stud. We'll see. This season's a bust, but I have a feeling the Canes will hire the right person this next time. I sure as hell hope so.

+1

Paul Dee is hopefully rotting in hell for what he's done to both of my alma maters.

I do as well Conan......The Miami program needs to pay the price for their past "sins"...The drubbing they received from Clemson last Saturday was just the beginning.

Most of you are old enough to remember the scandal at $MU.....They were paying players (led by Eric Dickerson) "under the table from the mid-70's until 1986 when the NCAA levied the "death penalty" forcing them to cancel their entire 1987/88 seasons (ouch). The program still hasn't recovered from "Pony Gate" a generation later. Miami, like many other schools, have been "skirting" the edge for a long time. What the faithful will endure to win a football game.

Another problem is that the administration doesn't care about football anymore. A few yrs ago, they raised the standards on academics and they care about more about grades and graduating over winning football games (which is great for the students but crappy for fans)

i grew up a huge canes fan (still like em but rarely watch) and they're like girl in high school who was the hottest girl in school that u would do anything to date.... Then u see pics of her on fb 20 yrs later and just shake your head how bad she looks and u think to yourself how hot she was.
