I just bought some WS futures on the Mets at the Palms here in Vegas at 18/1 ! Right now the Mets are the hottest team in baseball and have a 2 1/2 game lead over the Phillies. If the season ended today, they would be playing the Cubs. Since I have always been a Cub fan, this just seems like an awfully good wager to guard against the normal Cub stumble. Any thoughts ?

I don't think they have the depth in their pitching, or in their lineup to make any noise in the playoffs, but they will win their division. You could hedge that in the playoffs as the name New York will probably make them series favorites against almost any team other than the Cubs.

They have the deepest starting rotation in the league but their bullpen is pathetic.

If season ended today playoffs would be: Cubs vs D-Backs, Mets vs Brewers

Wouldn't the cubs play the NL west winner?
I just looked at the standings and I believe you are correct. I guess I didn't realize how the Mets winning streak has put them quite a bit above the nl West leaders. Well I guess my Mets wager isn't such a great Cub cover bet but hopefully they will both advance to meet in the next round.

Their Bullpen has been pathetic but sometimes that changes when you get to the playoffs and teams go with a shorter rotation and number 4 and 5 starters can come out of the pen. Also I believe Billy Wagner has been injured off and on most of the year and who knows which Billy wagner We might see come playoff time ?

This team is overrated IMO. They better have a big lead in late sept. because with that bullpen they'll start thinking about last years collapse. Most of the time that move to push 5th starters into bullpen rarely works. Seems like these days they have to be in a specific role to be effective.

I got 20/1 awhile back for a small bet. Probably a dead bet because the bullpen is a complete mess.

Their starters are nowhere as good as Chicago. Are they going to move Maine to closer?

They have 4 starters with ERA's under 4, and Pedro has been great since returning from the DL. Santana can match Harden at the front of the rotation and the Cubs 4 and 5 starters Lilly and Marquis are not very good.

I can't believe you of all people are talking about what happened last year ! What happened last year means nothing as to what might happen this year. My whole point is that why can I buy the Mets at 18/1 yet only get 7/2 on the Cubs. I have searched the entire town here in Vegas and 7/2 on Cubs is the best I found. If you want to talk about a team folding for the last 100 years... well you know the Cubs history. I'm just stating that right now this year with 35 games left the Mets are 9-1 in their last 10 games which makes them the hottest team in baseball. Also was Santana pitching for the Mets last year ?
As to your statement that moving 5 th starters into the bullpen rarely works, I'm not sure where you get that from as that practice has been going on in baseball for about the last 30 years and of course it has resulted in about 30 World Series Champs ! Often times even the number 4 starters come out of the pen in the World Series.

I keep forgetting you can't have opionions with your threads without you arguing them. Your always right !! 5th starters don't get into deep bullpen roles. Just because teams don't use their 5th starters in starting roles in the playoffs doesn't mean they have been plugging them into KEY bullpen roles. Give me a good example how this has been going on for the last 30 years !! I can't seem to think of one. What happened last year does have bearing on this year if you feel the team your looking at does not have clutch players, Its not a case of them coming up short, they are not clutch, outside of Beltran in 1 series a few years ago.Thats the Mets. 18/1 is probably ok but their not going to win anything with them except maybe small hedge.

BTW you going to bring back that Yankees/ Mets WS thread ?

Why do you almost instantly make this thread into a hostile sarcastic thread ? I never said you were wrong or that I was correct ! If in fact I win 1 out of 17 wagers at 18/1, I will come out ahead ! Anytime one makes a future wager, there are all kinds of things that come into play. Injuries, luck, bad calls, poor management decisions are all factors that neither you nor I have any real control over. I have made a lot of $$ wagering on futures and I like to share my thoughts with fellow RX,ers. I'm sorry that you always must insist on making my thoughts and wagers look like unbelievable senseless stupid thoughts. I dare not counter with any rebuttals or I guess I am a know it all. So in the future why don't you simply stay out of threads as I really am far below your intelligence apparently !:finger:

Marquis won't be on the playoff roster. And you can do worse than Lilly as your 4th pitcher. Mets have no answer for Dempster. Harden will be the Cubs 3rd pitcher.

Kermit - Take a look at the White Sox. Got +1500 today at BetJamaica.
