Was just in Memphis for the weekend 2 weeks ago and I have to wonder if they even have a home field advantage...Seems like that city has a lot more going on than worrying about a mid level college football program. Anyway, seems like a fun place to hang, anyone have insights on this city?

Lived and worked there about 5 years ago.

The city is a crooked cesspool. The politicians have screwed up in about every way managable. Violent crime is widespread. The only safe place to be in and around Memphis is east and into Mississippi.
But, there's some of the best bbq you'll ever eat. Beale Street is a great place to hang out. Blues, bars, and good greasy food.

But you're right, the city is just starting to support their football team the last couple of years. It's a basketball town.

I agree with Dan. It's hard for me to belittle any city more than New Orleans, but Memphis would be a close second. They typically have a liberal black mayor, and in the "South", that is a recipe for disaster. Another comparison to New orleans would be my advice on visiting Memphis......get drunk, have a good time for two days, and then get the Hell outta there.

Thats pretty much exactly what i did Pete, except that with my 2 1/2 year old and wife, there wasn't much time to drink LOL Have to visit Krystal burger whenever i am in the south too, something about those cheesburgers and chilli cheese fries.

The Memphis zoo was quite good though, very new and the kid loved it!

Beale street was and remains a highlight, along with Mud island and the trolly cars. the Blues City Cafe on Beale was OUTSTANDING. (this is the place the filmed a cool scene from the movie the firm where Cruise first meets the FBI Agents, one of my favorite movies, have to watch it every time its on).

Anyway, College ball does seem to be low on the totem pole there.

Was amazed to see the level of blight in some sections too, i mean how people allow themselves and their neighborhoods to get like that is amazing to me. Just north of the peasbody and downtown night spots was one raunchy looking area, happened to be the shelby county lockup LOL

The zoo is nice, the Fedex Forum is the nicest basketball venue in the land, Beale Street is a great place to visit, and Autozone Park is the nicest AAA ballpark I have ever seen. Also, if you like to shop, the Peabody Place is a fun place to hang around downtown. Also, plenty of nice public golf courses for visitors to play.

did all that excet the golf, FedEx forum is AWESOME. the location is amazing, how the area on the immediate south of beale was never used up amazes me, they should be about the most fun place for visiting teams to visit.

Lived in Memphis from 1969 to 1968 and still return as that is our corporate office is located. In early 60's their football has great following then it went south as basketball took over.

Best thing to happen in Memphis in many years is the new baseball as well as basketball facility as it took the downtown area to another level.

You got to remember Memphis is cotton folks and trust me big difference than middle tn and east tn. If Memphis had it's way it would be a state or maybe a country by itself. There is still a big time black and white issue there and to be honest in my opinion it will never change until some of the big time leaders get the hell out of the way.

Tons of bad area but most big cities have those,, BBQ is great as well as colleta's BBQ pizza a must in memphis.. out east some great steak places ( Jim's East) one of the best,,,,

serious good golf course there also if you play,, well kept secrect for sure..

Have a good trip,,, it isn't all bad in the Bluff City

Memphis isn't near the cotton place it used to be. FedEx, International Paper and Autozone are the biggest wigs now.

If you would like a GREAT place to eat, go to Grisanti's near the Poplar/Union split. It is very good. I am not sure if the Grizzlies are in town this weekend or not. You might be able to pick up a cheap ticket to a game(exhibiton). There are some really nice places to eat now just off of Main street to the NW of The Peabody. If interested, I will try to get some info together for you.

Haven't been there for 15yrs, but enjoyed my 3-4 month stay.

So when did the Memphis team start playing at the Fedex Forum?

List of MUSTS in Memphis

Brock - lived there for 9 years (went to high school there). Got to go to Rendevous BBQ ribs in alley across from Peabody. Food is good but atmosphere is great (usually see a celeb or 2 if they are in town). On Beale, Rum Boogie is good and Silky Sullivan's is a fun New Orleans type piano bar. Also BB King's is good for live blues (realy touristy though) If wanting steaks, none better than the Butcher Shop on Front street. Real casual and the cuts of meat are wonderful. Lastly, I'd have a drink in the Peabody lobby and see the ducks (great for the kids too). Bring them down everyday and let them swim in the fountain in the lobby. Then they lead them to the elevator and back to the roof they go. Pretty neat to see. Hope you enjoy the trip.:toast: :dancefool :toast:

Awesome advice guys, We are also planning on going over to Mud Island as this weekened is the last for the season. Can't wait to hit the road, we have XM radio in my wife's new car and it really makes a distance trip enjoyable, not having to search for good music and all...
