Billups is aging and not really a perfect fit for the offense. He's also highly unlikely to come back after this year. The Knicks traded lots of young potential for Carmelo. Anthony is a great scorer but he doesn't play a ton of defense and hasn't proven he can win in the playoffs.
Chandler is a big man that scores 16 PPG. Hard to find those types. Felton was putting up nearly 20 points and 10 assists a game. Gallinari was putting up 15+ points per game and is young. I know the Knicks' offense skews the stats, but those are some solid pieces. If Carmelo had 3-4 years left on his contract, the deal would make more sense. He was going to sign with the Knicks anyway and I think they overpaid.
I also don't think the Knicks will be that much better with Carmelo. Teams that don't play any defense win a ton of regular season games and then get beat by good defensive teams in the playoffs. It's not a championship formula.
I still can't wrap my head around this. so your telling me you would rather have Gallinari, Felton and Chandler on your team than Carmelo, Billups and Amare? I mean come on...as far as Billups goes he still has years left in the tank...he just dropped 20 last game and 30 on the Mavs recently, he's not done yet and if he wants to walk this year, let him..thats huge cap space opening up and just makes signing Chris Paul or Deron Williams more likely.
Melo wanted to get paid and made it clear he was not going to into this off season a free agent with rumors of a lock out looming. after giving up the last 3-4 years to try and sign Lebron, after they struck out with him...they had to do what they had to do. its not like they traded away freaking Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen here...
I'd rather have a Lexus than a Kia but it doesn't mean I should give away the Kia for it when I'm getting a free Lexus in a few months.
it wasn't a risk they could take. it was not set in stone or a given. it was possible that he was going into the off season a free agent with no contract and a lock out possible looming. who knows if he would have got freaked and signed the extension with Denver...just not a risk they could take.
I agree. I do think the Knicks gave up a lot, but imo they could not risk letting Melo go to another team - especially the Nets. Can you imagine the grief they would have gotten in the NY press if that had happened? This does not make the Knicks a contender now, but it does set them up for a future free agent acquisition such as Paul or Williams. I thought that was the plan when Walsh came aboard - to get the Knicks in a position to get some star power. Lebron didn't work out so this is plan B. If they can complete the process next year, I think it's a tremendous upgrade for a team that has been nothing for the past decade. The one thing that does worry me is that Dolan was heavily involved and that guy is an idiot.
The fact that the guy still is in love with Isiah Thomas scares all Knick fans.
lol some of you guys are hilarious. I guess they should have just stayed neutral and been content with being a .500 ball club. this isn't the final product. Deron Wiliams or Chris Paul are still on the horizon....and or Dwight Howard
