Billups is aging and not really a perfect fit for the offense. He's also highly unlikely to come back after this year. The Knicks traded lots of young potential for Carmelo. Anthony is a great scorer but he doesn't play a ton of defense and hasn't proven he can win in the playoffs.

Chandler is a big man that scores 16 PPG. Hard to find those types. Felton was putting up nearly 20 points and 10 assists a game. Gallinari was putting up 15+ points per game and is young. I know the Knicks' offense skews the stats, but those are some solid pieces. If Carmelo had 3-4 years left on his contract, the deal would make more sense. He was going to sign with the Knicks anyway and I think they overpaid.

I also don't think the Knicks will be that much better with Carmelo. Teams that don't play any defense win a ton of regular season games and then get beat by good defensive teams in the playoffs. It's not a championship formula.

I still can't wrap my head around this. so your telling me you would rather have Gallinari, Felton and Chandler on your team than Carmelo, Billups and Amare? I mean come on...as far as Billups goes he still has a few years left in the tank...he just dropped 20 last game and 30 on the Mavs recently, he's not done yet and if he wants to walk after this year, let him..thats huge cap space opening up and just makes signing Chris Paul or Deron Williams more likely.

Melo wanted to get paid and made it clear he was not going to into this off season a free agent with rumors of a lock out looming. after giving up the last 3-4 years to try and sign Lebron, after they struck out with him...they had to do what they had to do. its not like they traded away freaking Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen here...

I'd rather have a Lexus than a Kia but it doesn't mean I should give away the Kia for it when I'm getting a free Lexus in a few months.

it wasn't a risk they could take. it was not set in stone or a given. it was possible that he was going into the off season a free agent with no contract and a lock out possible looming. who knows if he would have got freaked and signed the extension with Denver...just not a risk they could take.

melo is top 5 and definate top 10 player in game

Melo is as good as...

Wade
Bryant
James
Rose
Howard
Durant
Dirk

Shit, the list goes on and on. He's not better than any of those guys. He's not even the best player on his own team.

I agree. I do think the Knicks gave up a lot, but imo they could not risk letting Melo go to another team - especially the Nets. Can you imagine the grief they would have gotten in the NY press if that had happened? This does not make the Knicks a contender now, but it does set them up for a future free agent acquisition such as Paul or Williams. I thought that was the plan when Walsh came aboard - to get the Knicks in a position to get some star power. Lebron didn't work out so this is plan B. If they can complete the process next year, I think it's a tremendous upgrade for a team that has been nothing for the past decade. The one thing that does worry me is that Dolan was heavily involved and that guy is an idiot.
The fact that the guy still is in love with Isiah Thomas scares all Knick fans.

What's this all mean?
Simple.

Teams that used to score 120 on NYK, will now score 140.

Good job Mr. Dolan.

i would have kept what i had and waited until after 2012 when some big name guys are free agents. they were going to make the playoffs this year and that would have kept the fans happy .

They are two over right now.
With the new team, they'll finish two under, or worse.
NYK did not need a shooter.

I would have just waited if I was the Knicks. I don't think Melo seriously was going to sign an extension with the Nets.

the knicks stink anyway and its not like melo makes them contenders, he is no where near top 5 or top 10 imo, the knicks are still a non-factor...

I agree. Don't think Melo is in the top 10 players in the NBA. Top 20? Yes. Defense? Top 100.

lol some of you guys are hilarious. I guess they should have just stayed neutral and been content with being a .500 ball club. this isn't the final product. Deron Wiliams or Chris Paul are still on the horizon....and or Dwight Howard

I don't disagree with you but they gave up too much for a guy that I don't think is as good as people think. Just my opinion of course.

Why not just sign him after the season and then Paul or Williams without giving up all the guys, picks and cash?

melo is probably the greatest scorer in the league(yes, better then durant) which is why this trade is a big deal.

this is also leading to chris paul or deron williams next year when billups contract expires.

the trio of anthony, stoudamire, and paul/williams wouldnt be possible if they kept chandler and gallinari, which is why this deal is so good for them.
