I eat comfortably on around $100 a month (just me). I eat a lot of chicken.

So you never eat out or buy a cup of coffee or a beer, etc. $100 a month is very frugal, but doable. I'm sure it could be done with ease and still keep a nutritious diet.

$ 1 a day isnt possible. $ 3 a day probably is...

Regular price of store brand oatmeal is around 2 000 kilocalories for $1. Dry beans, pasta, rice, peanut butter, are all good enough nutrition for very little money. Can find a dozen eggs for under $1 on occasion and sometimes even up to eight or 10 pounds of potatoes.

To say it's impossible just shows how little people know about market values of food. This is just further proof about how much people truly hate to eat. They have such extreme hatred for the unpopular, inexpensive food that they refuse to even believe it exists

Again, right now the only incentive is spending a few dollars less, which isn't enough for me to bother with. But if someone were to throw in something additional for the effort, I would absolutely be willing to go an entire year spending less than $365 on food

it's possible, just not realistic. Probably half the world does it in places like haiti, africa, India, China.

I'd do it for a month with a prize of say 50k at the end of the month. Eggs, rice, pasta as the main staple foods. Not too healthy overall.

longer term I'd want the ability to hunt, fish and have a garden or to dumpster-dive or to shoplift.

ya , its called malnutrition... i suppose we could all do it on 1 dollar a day if we really wanted to..

a year would be extreme but possible with a large reward in the end. You wouldn't starve to death but I do think you'd need to buy in bulk and be very selective.

tom please describe a typical days menu. I made a stab at it.

you both would want to buy out of the bet after about 60 days.. you can only consume $ 1 a day worth of food or drink for 1 year , aint happenin.. you would be so sick of the same products over and over again..

I spend $20-$25 weekly at the grocery store. Bag of 7 skinless, chicken breasts is usually $7.99. Enough salad for 5-6 meals is about $3.99. Whole wheat english muffins usually a pack of 6 is $.99. Small tub of store-brand fat-free peanut butter is $.99. Bag of apples I usually get $1.50 worth and oranges at $1.50 worth. Loaf of whole-wheat bread $.99. Already have a water filter so water is 90% of consumption.

If I include alcohol add $80 a week. I got to the bar usually twice a week but drink some every night.

Now, do I cheat a lot because my roommate buys groceries too. We share for the most part.

For a fact though, when I live alone, I can do $25-30 a week and be good. Add an extra $30 for the month for a 5 lb. thing of whey protein (I could do the shakes for two meals if I wanted).

Because I'm 23 & in my final year of college, I only make about $200 a week. So I've grown accustomed to living like this but get a long just fine on it. I'll buy steaks or pork chops or things when they are manager special.

Now, when I get real job, I'll probably double what I spend a week. Simply because I'll be able to afford better cuts of meat. It will be worth it. I don't choose to eat like I do but it works for me and I don't mind.

I went over a year with nothing but baked chicken, rice and canned corn, with also a granola bar a day. and once a month crab legs. It was of my own choice and it was a diet I put myself on. It worked, but as soon as I stopped, put all the weight plus some. Drank nothing but water and suger free koolaid. This was more than 10 years ago. I am sure I could do it again now, asfar as the eating part, the drinking part would never happen.

Nights I go out I actually just usually make something when I get home. I don't like being a senior and going into up all night as immature as that sounds. It's usually wasted, loud freshman that can't control their own piss. I get pretty cocked, but I can't handle myself.

For those who find it hard to believe even attempting, you need to understand that the key is to actually enjoy eating

This summer three different restaurants gave me nice sized meals for free simply for being the only customer they knew who could actually enjoy their food enough to keep eating until the plate was finished. Everyone else hated the food so much they would rather stop eating and pay the bill instead of eat for free

One even comped travel, hotel and spending money

Something like that can make the rest of the weeks oatmeal, potatoes and peanut butter go a lot further

Casino advertises a buffet ticket after 100 points and it doesn't even use up your points. Use the 5x or 10x promotions then add back the Bonus Play from the points you earned and how much does that cost? Don't eat for 24 or so before going, eat every type of food you want, then don't eat for another 24 hours. Even with a tip that's pretty close to the dollar per day average, even if you have to run $20 through the machines. Again, the problem is most people hate to eat so much that they'll stop after only a few plates

I'll try that once my work schedule clears up in a couple months

I agree with this post because I just read an article about the current Florida prison system budget feeding inmates for $2.21 per day and the head of FDOC saying they've pared it down as far as it can go.

My monthly food budget is ridiculous.

shop at whole foods usually 125 a week
usually have one nice dinner a week 100 dollars
usually have one scaled down dinner out a week 40 dollars

I am close to a 1000 a month in food/alcohol.

ya , enjoying eating is the key to only spending $ 1 a day on food. whatever the fuck that is supposed to mean. i cant do it on $ 1 a day cause i hate food so much..

if you want to start to add things like using points for free meals then whatever.... i am done..

this whole conversation from what i was reading into it seemed to be about going to the store and spending $ 7 a week and only eating what you purchased..

i know what you could do , go to denny's once a week and snag food off of other people's plates .. that would save the $ 1 for that day..

You honestly eat one meal a week by yourself in a restaurant and it cost you $100? Are you serious?

You must be a giant fat guy.
