The Marlins are on a bit of a roll now, winning 3/4 heading into the series vs the Expos. They send Brad Penny to the hill tonight to keep that roll going. Penny has pitched extremely well over his last two starts, going 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA. He has pitchers even better vs the Expos in his career. Actually he has DOMINATED them! Penny is 11-3 with a 2.19 ERA in 16 starts against Montreal. He's been extremely effective on the road against the Expos, going 5-1 with a 1.88 ERA in seven starts. Thought the Expos pitcher for tonight, T. Armas, has pitched much better of late, he has had alot of troubles against the Fish. Armas is 2-8 with a 5.37 ERA in 11 starts vs the Marlins. I look for both these trends to continue tonight as the Marlins look to inch closer to 1st place.
Cubs -1/2 +102 (1st 5) (3 units)
Kerry Wood will be on the hill tonight for the all of a sudden hot Cubs when they take on the Phillies tonight. Since returning from the Triceps injury Wood is 1-0 with a 1.64 ERA. The Phillies send mightily struggling Brett Myers to the hill tonight in hopes he can turn his month long slump around. The 23-year-old right-hander has been dreadful during the past month. In his last five starts, Myers is 0-4 with an 11.45 ERA. With the return of Aramis Ramirez, it looks like the Cubbies bats are back in full swing and that does not bode well for a struggling pitcher like Myers.
Astros -1.5 +119 (3 units)
The Astros look to be hitting their stretch run stride while the Brewers are folding away. The Brewers have lost 4 in a row heading into this tough series against their divisional foe. The Astros have won 2 in a row and have received a balance of good hitting and great pitching in hope to turn their season around. Roger Clemens takes the mound for the Astros looking for his 12th win. He came back from the debacle in the All-Star game to dominate the Padres, allowing 2 runs in 7 innings. Clemens is 17-10 with a 2.07 ERA in 33 career games against the Brewers. The Brewers send C. Capuano to the hill. Capuano just ended his own personal 2 game losing streak by beating the then struggling Cubs on Tuesday. He is having a solid season, but this is not the time you want to face the Astros, especially with the Rocket on the hill. The Brewers have been shut out 2 games in a row and tonight it only gets tougher.
Rangers +1/2 +100 (1st 5) (2 units)
This is basically a value play here. I look for the frontrunning Rangers to get a good start out of Rogers and keep it close early. Mulder will be hard to score against but a tie gives me the money here. I can see a 2-2 or even 1-1 game after 5. I like the +1/2 line with even money with a 12 game pitcher on the hill for me.
Good luck to everyone today.
