McCain Turns Sour on His Onetime Media `Base' as Election Nears

<!-- END HEADLINE --> <!-- BEGIN STORY BODY --> Heidi PrzybylaTue Sep 2, 12:01 AM ET

Sept. 2 (Bloomberg) -- The longtime love affair between John McCain and what he once called his ``base'' -- the national news media -- is on the rocks.
McCain's campaign manager, Steve Schmidt, yesterday lashed out at what he deemed ``offensive'' and ``demeaning'' coverage and questions from reporters after McCain's running mate, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, confirmed her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant.
``It used to be that a lot of those smears and the crap on the Internet stayed out of the newsrooms of serious journalists,'' Schmidt said at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota.

and now, the truth

At 6:30 Monday morning, at a hotel here in St. Paul, a team of senior McCain staffers got word from even more senior staffers that there was news about vice-presidential pick Sarah Palin. Everybody had heard the rumors, spread on The Atlantic and DailyKos websites, that Palin’s fifth child, Trig, born last April, was not really hers — that Trig was really Palin’s 17 year-old daughter’s child, and Palin faked pregnancy to cover up her daughter’s condition. None of that was true, they all knew. But the top McCain staffers revealed that a story would be breaking on the wires in a few hours reporting that Palin’s daughter, Bristol, is, in fact, pregnant now. The father is Bristol’s boyfriend, the staffers were told, and she intends to marry him.

The McCain aides’ assignment was to call a list of about 40 top evangelical and other cultural conservative leaders. Each one would get a personal explanation of the story, and each was asked for his or her reaction. The McCain people reached nearly everyone before the story broke, and the verdict was unanimous — all the leaders supported Palin and her place on the McCain ticket.

From Dr. James Dobson (Focus on the Family):
Quote:
"In the 32-year history of Focus on the Family, we have offered prayer, counseling and resource assistance to tens of thousands of parents and children in the same situation the Palins are now facing. We have always encouraged the parents to love and support their children and always advised the girls to see their pregnancies through, even though there will of course be challenges along the way. That is what the Palins are doing, and they should be commended once again for not just talking about their pro-life and pro-family values, but living them out even in the midst of trying circumstances.

"Being a Christian does not mean you're perfect. Nor does it mean your children are perfect. But it does mean there is forgiveness and restoration when we confess our imperfections to the Lord. I've been the beneficiary of that forgiveness and restoration in my own life countless times, as I'm sure the Palins have.

"The media are already trying to spin this as evidence Gov. Palin is a 'hypocrite,' but all it really means is that she and her family are human. They are in my prayers and those of millions of Americans.

from the biggest "bot" in this house.

Once again ignoring words and simply giving us his own juvenile and uninformed opinions.

Stop thinking you actually no something. You see, the OP was suggesting the base is abandoning Palin, the truth is quite the opposite. Sorry you can't grasp an issue, any issue, must be hard to get through the day.

We'll let time decide yet another issue.

Again...nonsense from the left. You are embarassingly out of touch.

There are untold millions of us raised Christian who embrace Christian values...and have nothing at all to do with the so called religious right. I don't go to church anymore...I just don't care for ogranized religion...but I would like to think basic Christian values have proven to be a pretty good template to live by.

I've never met or come across the relgious right in my lifetime...never.

The silent majority is going to grind you up on this one...and you don't even see it coming.

I'm always amused at the lefts ridiculous fear about the Christian right...look out...they might turn you into a pillar of salt.

You are earning less and less respect every day you post, from both sides of the aisle.

Don't forget your update about some worthless concert by a band nobody cares about, and that's your biggest contribution to this forum.

what a waste of bandwidth.
