note that the McCain campaign's strategy on race is to (a) play the race card and then (b) accuse Obama of having played the race card.

The issue here, of course, is that John McCain claimed great umbrage at Barack Obama's lighthearted comment that Bush and McCain would emphasize that "he doesn't look like all those other presidents on the dollar bills."

But if John McCain thinks that comment was playing the race card, then why did he play it first? One month ago -- in late June -- a McCain ad superimposed Obama's visage on a one hundred dollar bill as part of an effort to mock his supposed 'presumptuousness.'

McCain's ad:

June 20, 2008. Jacksonville Fla. 7 days before the McCain ad came out.

"It is going to be very difficult for Republicans to run on their stewardship of the economy or their outstanding foreign policy," Obama told a fundraiser in Jacksonville, Florida. "We know what kind of campaign they're going to run. They're going to try to make you afraid.
"They're going to try to make you afraid of me. He's young and inexperienced and he's got a funny name. And did I mention he's black?"

Your time line is a little off. Who was first?

"he doesn't look like all those other presidents on the dollar bills."

Wins the award for quote taken out of context for the year.

Why people automatically translated that to black/white?! Is a mystery to me.
Some folks are way too concious of race IMO.

We only need 50.1% of people to be concious of race or religion Rob.

He was trying to be clever and it backfired on him. If he would give a speech on issues instead of a sermon on his mythical hope and change I might pay attention. For me so far it’s all been smoke and mirrors.

How else can you possibly interpret it??? To what else could he possibly have been referring???? Washington and Lincoln don't look anything like each other except for their skin color. It's particularly obvious in light of the previous quote Dave007 cites above.
