I won't hold my breath though...

Baghdad, Iraq, Jul. 21 (UPI) -- Iraqi security reportedly discovered three missiles carrying nuclear heads concealed in a concrete trench northwest of Baghdad, official sources said Wednesday.

The official daily al-Sabah quoted the sources as saying the missiles were discovered in trenches near the city of Tikrit, the hometown of ousted Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.

"The three missiles were discovered by chance when the Iraqi security forces captured former Baath party official Khoder al-Douri who revealed during interrogation the location of the missiles saying they carried nuclear heads," the sources said.

They pointed out that the missiles were actually discovered in the trenches lying under six meters of concrete and designed in a way to unable sophisticated sensors from discovering nuclear radiation.

The sources said al-Douri, who is related to former Vice Chairman of the Iraq Revolution Council and Saddam's right-hand man Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, was captured after Iraqi police intercepted an e-mail message in which he set a meeting with another former Baath official.

The report could not be authenticated by the interior ministry or the national security department, but the paper noted Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshiar Zibari made a surprise request recently to Mohammed el-Baradei, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, to resume inspections for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

NUKE REPORT REJECTED

Iraq's Interior Ministry has dismissed reports that nuclear missiles have been found in Iraq.

The official daily al-Sabah newspaper said the nuclear tipped rockets were found buried in concrete near the city of Tikrit, the hometown of former president Saddam Hussein.

"The three missiles were discovered by chance when the Iraqi security forces captured former Baath party official Khoder al-Douri who revealed during interrogation the location of the missiles saying they carried nuclear heads," an official source told the newspaper.

They said the nuclear warheads were buried in six metres of concrete and had been hid so as they would not be detected with sophisticated equipment.

The Interior Ministry dismissed the story as "stupid".

A senior US military official said officials were checking the report.

Iraq Interior Ministry Says Report on Nukes 'Stupid'

BAGHDAD, Iraq (Reuters) - Iraq (news - web sites)'s Interior Ministry dismissed as "stupid" a report in a local newspaper Wednesday that said three nuclear missiles had been found near Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s hometown of Tikrit.

A senior U.S. military official told reporters he had no information on the report in the Iraqi newspaper al-Sabah. He said officials were checking the report.

Asked by Reuters about the report, a spokesman at the Interior Ministry said: "It's stupid."

The report, picked up the United Press International news agency, sent the U.S. dollar higher against other major currencies on the foreign exchanges.

Al-Sabah opened last year with backing from the former U.S.-led administration in Iraq.

The United States and Britain launched last year's invasion of Iraq over accusations that Saddam had stockpiled weapons of mass destruction. But no stockpiles of banned weapons have been found.

Pat: if this were true, then it means that Saddam was able to get his hands on nukes without anyone knowing ... your CIA might be bad, but it isn't THAT bad. If Saddam could have done this successfully, we should ALL be saddened.

Don't forget there was a 3 year absence of "inspectors" and some of them that were there were on the take.

Don't forget about 15 or 20 years ago Israel took out nuclear plant in Iraq in a bomb strike.

It probably is far fetched, but does anybody really know what went on there?..if you think about it there just finding out about the "oil for Palaces" program.

You're assuming that UN inspectors and the CIA are privvy to the same, and only one another's information. No chance. If Saddam had successfully built three nuclear weapons, the US would have known about it.

x,

Your assuming the CIA wasn't inept because of Clinton's lack of funding and unwillingness to pay some bad people for good information.

Even if Saddam had ICBM's, he couldn't hit the lower 48. Not that the other states and territories are unimportant but I don't think he would use them to kill such a small group of Americans knowing what might be the result. Now if he could rebuild his navy he could launch it from a sub or carrier in order to hit a much more attractive target like Los Angeles. Unless of course Saddam had a delivery system more advanced than America then it's pretty much a moot point.

I used to know of a couple of sites that give instructions for a crude nuclear weapon but can't remember them. These sites would be more beneficial to terrorists than Saddam.

I disagree

Saddam was a madman and he would have been just as happy if he blew israel off the face of the planet. He believed that somehow he would lead the other nations in the middle east to back him in the cleansing of the area of the infidels.

It would certainly have excited some other countries in the region and if he played his cards right with his allies in prominent places on the UN (russia, france, china) he may actually have been able to keep an occupying force out of his country.

Im not saying he would be looking to take over the world - but I can visualize the above scenario without much trouble - not to mention he has said that he would destroy israel if he could - and has actually tried to in the past...

Warner: New Report Backs Iraq WMD Claims

Wed Jul 21, 8:51 AM ET Add Politics - U. S. Congress to My Yahoo!

By APARNA H. KUMAR, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - An upcoming report will contain "a good deal of new information" backing up the Bush administration's contention that Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) pursued weapons of mass destruction, Senate Armed Services Committee (news - web sites) Chairman John Warner, R-Va., said.

The administration cited Saddam's hunger for such weapons as a main reason to invade Iraq (news - web sites) last year.

"I'm not suggesting dramatic discoveries," Warner told reporters Tuesday, but "bits and pieces that Saddam Hussein was clearly defying" international restrictions, "and he and his government had a continuing interest in maintaining the potential to shift to production of various types of weapons of mass destruction in a short period of time."

The report is by the civilian head of the Iraq Survey Group, Charles Duelfer, who reports to the CIA (news - web sites) director. Initially the report was expected to be done this summer, but instead it will come out in September, Warner said.

Warner said the new information covers "some weapons that predate the first Gulf War (news - web sites) that are still around and were used at the time Saddam Hussein used chemical weapons against the Iranians" as well as "remnants of what he was doing himself here in the last several years." He would not elaborate, saying he didn't want to pre-empt the report.

The senator made the comments after a closed briefing by Maj. Gen. Keith Dayton, who updated the panel on the Iraq Survey Group's progress. Dayton returned from Iraq last month after giving up his post as the military head of the hunt for weapons as part of a routine rotation. Marine Brig. Gen. Joseph J. McMenamin became director of the Iraq Survey Group on June 12.

The intelligence community, meanwhile, hopes the trials and interrogations of "high-level detainees" by the new Iraqi government could yield more information about Saddam's weapons programs, Warner said.

"The Iraqi people are still concerned that some remnants of this program are yet to be found," Warner said.

A defense official speaking on condition of anonymity Tuesday, said the survey group has not yet found any new evidence of Saddam weapons. While there are "all kinds of documents" showing his intent to produce weapons of mass destruction, there is "no treasure map that shows 'Here is where the missing munitions are,'" the official said.
