Matt Cassel, whom the New England Patriots named as their franchise player in early February, has been traded to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Cassel has been informed he is being traded to the Chiefs, ESPN.com's John Clayton and ESPN's Michael Smith have confirmed.
The Boston Globe reported on its Web site that official paperwork had been filed with the NFL. The story was first reported by NFL.com.
Cassel had accepted the Patriots' non-exclusive franchise tender, guaranteeing the quarterback at least $14.65 million next season. Cassel faxed his acceptance to the Patriots, the NFL and the NFLPA, but the Patriots also needed to offer him the one-year contract.

The franchise tag's value is the average of the top five salaries for NFL players at a particular position.
Cassel finished 327 of 516 for 3,693 yards, with 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
It would be the Chiefs' second acquisition of a major member of the Patriots' organization in as many days; the Chiefs traded for linebacker Mike Vrabel on Friday. It also was orchestrated by one as well -- Scott Pioli, the former Patriots vice president of player personnel who this year was hired as the Chiefs' general manager.

Why would it be a bad move for the chiefs? They won 3 or 4 games last year, one of the worst teams in the league. Getting two experience Pats are a great thing for this organization.

Take the chiefs to win the AFC West

Not a bad move on the Chiefs part at all. Bad move on the Pats part. Older QB, not as mobile, and who knows about his knee.

Only thing good for the Pats is that they play in a weak division. Miami could win this division again. Miami on the rise, Pats in decline.

Stay tuned.

Tom Brady is 31 years old. He has 6 to 8 years left in the NFL. And his knee will be fine. People are making to big of a deal about it. It was an ACL, thats a 6 to 8 months recovery. Even Michael Smith of ESPN said today that if he had the surgery today he could be ready in time for opening day. You don't trade the best QB in the NFL and keep Cassel sorry. And he was never mobile so that doesn't matter at all. Pats will easily win the divison next year

Tom Brady should play yeah about 7 more years. 7 years in the NFL is a freaking eternity.

I mean, where was the league back then? Marshall Faulk was a high end running back, Michael Vick and his mobile scramblers were supposed to take over pocket quarterbacks, Trent Dilfer was fresh off a super bowl, Jerry Rice was still playing, Deion Sanders was a Redskins... I mean that was agggeess ago.

The Patriots most likely got a high end 1st round draft pick. They can scoop up some stud or trade down and rebuild that aging defense they have.

Mike Vrabel is still a stud but they are really looking to rebuild for Dynasty 2.0

i think its a great trade for the chiefs, its better than drafting a qb and not know what your getting but by getting cassel and with a gm that knows him very well makes it a good situation.i was never a thigpen liker,he just isn't my type of qb,im a drop back passer lover and not a running qb lover.the chiefs will do just fine with cassel and they did not have to give up a lot to get him, even though id like to have that 34th pick its better than giving up a 1st rounder

You guys can still trade LJ and Tony Gonzalez.

Cassell may be a passer but he can run too. He is big and athletic for his size and not scared to take off. Now, if his primarty receiver is covered he will move on to his 2nd and 3rd targets before taking off...

unlike Michael the savage Vick who looked at his pass rushers ( not downfield) and if his #1 WR wasn't open he took off running like the primate that he is.

I do believe KC had a strong draft class last year and that bringing in Cassell and Vrabel will strongly help move in the right direction. You now have your leader on offense and your leader on defense. I'm not sure about the new coach but SPERM Edwards is not a winner.
