This is a popular perk around these days......

When getting a matchplay bonus, whats the best way to take advantage of this? Do you play a matchplay all on one game, use it as a regular unit play, or try to milk it?

The MatchPlay Bonus , is it a big perk or not?

Journeyman,

Couple of different ways to maximize the match play. My personal favorite is to play a huge dog at the casino where you are getting the bonus and offset it with a favorite at a different casino. If you shop and spread your bet properly, you should be able to earn 80% of your matchplay bonus with NO risk(other than the casino going out of business

The guys over at SSB hit this topic regularly. I think the way to get highest expected value is to use it on 3-team parlays. Of course, using it to hedge, like senditin suggests, is also a good use of it.

What exactly is a matchplay? Is there a rollover requirement?

A matchplay is a Bonus Play that the book gives you. For example on a 10% match, if you deposit $500 you get a free $50 play. If you win, you get the win amount.....if not you haven't lost a dime. Basically a no-risk play.

My feelings is that a matchplay should be used as though you are using you're own money. Use it to make a play you would normally wager on. I don't think you should make a play you wouldn't normally make like a parlay or big dog even if it is no-risk. You want to maximize your chances to win so making a bet you normally wouldn't make doesn't seem all that wise. Just my 2 cents.

Jman - to me they are worth half of their face value in cash. That's what I use as a guideline for match plays.

As far as how best to use them that depends on what sort of player you are and what you are after. Best way for you and I may not be the same. What's the best way to spend an evening with a hooker? Each will have their own preferences. What are you after? Maximum value or just trying to convert it into cash? Anyway just throwing out stuff here....

Pat said-to me they are worth half of their face value in cash
....
I admit I dont understand it.

But explanation here seem to say its just like betting cash.(I cant see difference)
So why would you give it 1/2 value of cash, pat?

also-On many contests around they say if your acct is funded you win x$ but if not then y$
If you have this match play money in your acct wouldnt that count as funded?(happened to me- was betting this match play money(just like real money I thought)- when I won this CONTEST they only gave me smaller amt(as if it wasnt funded)-I did not question it- But I am curious.
edited-
more explanation- the matchplay I was betting on was a "gift" not the result of any money sent in by me.-

Pat if you or anyone could help me more understand itd be appreciated.,Thanks

pickles , are you talking about a contest win or something? the only way you get a match play is to post money in an account, thast the only way I know other than winning a contest and the book throws you a bone....

A matchplay is simple really if you win the bet, you win the money, if you lose it doesn`t count against your real money...

If your goal is to convert it to cash, then scalping it off is the best play. A true scalp can net you 100% of it or more and you aren't "betting" that way.

If you want to "bet it" then a 3-teamer is good for the same reasons 3-teamers are good regardless ( less vig and the compounding effect ).

If you are a "flat bet bigot" then you never play parlays so why do it here? If you acknowledge they are good plays in this situation then why would they be so bad otherwise?

I wish I could buy match plays off of people for 50% of face value, assuming they can be used any way you want. I could retire right now.

Thanks guys for thoughts-
JMAN- I edited my post to maybe explain better.
Igetp2s- yes I dont see how it differs from real money that Pat said he valued at 50%
...
maybe just an oversight(smaller contest win) that I was counted as not funded since I never questioned it- (I was just grateful)

Buckeye is correct...the scalp can get you towards 100% if you're lucky but low 80's is much easier to find if you need the money quicker. The problem with this method is you need a boatload of cash at the book where you are playing the favorite.

Don't think a big perk, but it is a useful thing to get of course. I have always tended to use them 50/50 straight. $100 = 2 * $50.

Just my style.

Hopefully a simple explanation:

You bet say $100 match play at even odds (+100). If you win, you have $100 in your account. If you lose, you have zero.

Playing with "real money" you would have $200 with a winning play (your initial stake and your winnings). Zero if you lost.

Simply put, you can win but can only lose the $ the house gave you to bet.

Vini,

Let's use an example. Say you had a $100 matchplay bonus to use. What I prefer to do is look for a HIGH dog at the place where I'm getting the matchplay. I then would look for the favorite at another out with a line as close to the dog as possible. Let's say you could find a tennis match at +1000 at the place you're getting the matchplay at and say you could find a -1000 at another out. Excluding the pennies you would put the $100 matchplay on the dog at +1000. You then go and bet $91 at -1000 on the favorite. If the favorite wins you pick up $91 and you lose nothing because you had a free shot with the match play. If the dog wins you pick up $1000 on the match play and lose $910 for a net win of $90. So either way you are getting a 90% return without any risk.

There are a couple issues with this method. First it's not easy to find high dogs at some places that give matchplays. Second you need multiple outs. Third you need to find lines that come close to the dog line to make it work the best. And lastly if you have a large matchplay, you need a boatload of money at another out to bet the favorite.

Hope I didn't f_ck anything up with the math and this helps you out!
