Throwing on 1 of the 3 plays is fine but that play is so high risk in that spot.

You gotta know you have 3 cracks at it and have a major advantage on the ground.

Danny Ainge once said "The Pistons forgot about 1 thing, they forgot about Larry Bird"

Well Pete Carroll forgot about one thing, he forgot about Malcolm Butler.

you don't have three cracks at it on the ground, you have two (26 seconds, 1 timeout)

the only way you get to use all three downs is to pass on either 2nd down like they did or third down like they would of had to do if Lynch gets stopped on 2nd down

With a chance to win the Super Bowl, you give the ball to Michael Jordan not Will Perdue.

allow me to argue like you

"worst analogy ever", and on so many levels, far too many to waste my time elaborating

I'll choose to keep it simple, Will Perdue was never the highest paid Bull (and yes, Pete was putting the ball in Wilson's hands, so that's another "worst ever" argument)

PS: AND nobody will ever confuse Lynch with MJ either, so that's three "worst evers" in one short post (OMG)

The sports media is such a joke though. How does this make an ESPN headline? Who cares what a players mom thinks. I'm sure guys bitch to their family members about coaches all the time.

No different than people bitching about their bosses.

how about headsetgate? at least one loser actually bought into that trumped up story and ran with the Patriots were cheating story line(a long time political adversary, I don't want to offend the wrong people)

then we learn the Patriots headsets went out during a loss to the Giants in the SuperBowl. Why was that not a story? as Belichick said, "we don't make excuses"

I love being the man and not the bitch

Easily have three cracks at it!! First down played ended at 1:06. The morons running the Hawks let all that time tick away before running their second down play.

My God. Thanks. To give credence to what a players mom thinks, is a new low in "journalism".

well, they didn't want to leave the Patriots with any time on the clock either, since the Pats would only need a FG to tie it. So they certainly didn't want to score with 1 minute left

it was working out ideally from the Seahawk perspective. Enough time to use all three downs (if they passed once) and use up all the clock. win win

nobody expected a pass from a distance that wasn't intercepted all year in the entire league to be intercepted in that spot

Yeah I just meant you wanna ensure you get 3 cracks at it rather than go with such a high risk pass play. I know they could only run 2x. Obviously they had to throw on 1 of 2nd or 3rd down. I just hate that play in that spot when you want something low risk to ensure you get 2 more plays, but I suppose you never know what a coach thinks he sees.

@PHDinSports......You wouldn't wanna call timeout and run a play at 1:06. What if you score? Then NE has tons of time to drive for a field goal. And NE had shredded Seattles D for long drives twice in the 4th quarter. Carroll was right to let the clock run down there, you wouldn't wanna see NEs offense back on the field.

This actually happened to Seattle their first year being good. Vs Atlanta they left them like 45 seconds after a score and ATL drove for the win and eliminated them in the playoffs.

He shouldn't have made it a day past the SB.

If you're in a profession and you make a decision that is quite possibly the worst decision ever made in your field and you lose the company money or whatever, you'd be fired that day.

lets run the ball on second down, lets get stuffed

now what happens?
1) you lose your last time out
2) you're locked into passing on 3rd down lest you let the clock run out
3) 4th down is a crap shoot

by passing a pass that wasn't intercepted all year in the NFL (0-120) you

1) give yourself your best option for using all three downs
2) the run is a viable option on third since you have your timeout left keeping the Patriots off balance
3) 4th down is a crap shoot

Pete knows this, Pete game planned for this, Pete didn't make that decision in a vacuum, Pete said he thought they had an advantage in the passing game against the goal line defense (duh, do you think? oh never mind)

what Pete didn't know is that BB practiced against that very play for two weeks and that Butler would recognize that play, jump it from 10 yards deep and make a sensational play on the ball resulting in the very first (and only) interception of the season on a ball passed from the 1. Thus Pete shockingly never had a chance to execute the game plan he brought to the table.

Pete was 1,001x more prepared in that spot than every Monday morning QB combined

get over it already

100 percent false that Pete was prepared in that spot

Bellicheck saw how unorganized and panicked the entire seahawks sideline was and that's why he didn't call the to. If you saw the pats documentary you can see video evidence that he was not prepared at all in that moment.

People can find a way to justify anyting, but it doesn't change the fact that it was the worst call in the history of sports.

This discussion is silly. It was the worst call, in the biggest spot, in the history of the NFL. It wasn't because BB is some genius.

A pass in that spot is dumb but not completely outrageous. BUT to call a play with that high risk...... Throwing the ball over lineman, where a tip ball can easily be picked or a guy can jump the route like Butler did.....was as dumb as it gets and cost them a super bowl. I mean, roll Russell out and give him run/pass option. Guy who called that play should never call another play on any level of football.

OMG, too damn funny

why do people have such strong opinions and choose to make outlandish claims when they're nothing more than a Monday morning QB? it just cracks me up

at least I try to make a reasoned arguments and present why I think such, but when people say somebody should have been fired on the spot or that's the worst call in the history of sports, I can only shake my head and laugh

said in the most respectful way possible

Willie......every single person is a Monday morning qb.....every week since football was invented.....except for the person that makes the play decision.

Coaches make mistakes, this one happened to be on the biggest stage with the most at risk......and it was a spectacular mistake.

I saw the pats doc. Makes a lot of sense looking back on it. You have to understand the history of the nfl playoffs to know what I mean. That double pass was broken out 10 years later....if they exposed it vs KC on mnf like they almost did...
.it prolly wouldn't of worked so well vs the ravens. Or amendola wouldn't of been so wide open.

Any other play than giving Lynch the ball on 2nd down was the worst call in the history of professional sports. No matter what you say or who your team is doesn't change anything.

Willie you're arguing for a playcall that we've already have hard evidence that failed. Even if lynch got stuffed, you still have at least 1 more play maybe 2.

hind sight is 20/20, we'd all be perfect with hind sight

I'm just trying to elaborate on why Pete may have done what he did, that's all

if that play was a TD, I don't think anything different, but people calling it the dumbest play in the history of sports (LMFAO) would not be calling it such

if it were incomplete, nobody even thinks twice
