The 40-year-old's wife decided to divorce him after he returned home after a weekend's gambling having lost all his money, the Hong Kong edition of the China Daily reported.
His wife refused to believe his promises to stop gambling until he took out a kitchen knife and sliced off his right index finger in front of her.
The woman, from Zhanjiang, western Guangdong province, was "deeply moved" by his determination and decided to stand by him, the newspaper said.
