Micky Mantle won the triple crown dude there have been only 5 major league triple crown winners for batting.
1909 Ty Cobb, 1925 Rodger Hornsby, 1934 Lou Gehrig, 1942 Ted Williams, 1956 Micky Mantle
If I were talking to someone about let’s say the 10 greatest hitters of all time and all these guys were not on his list, I would change the subject to drugs because at lest I would know the dude has some first hand knowledge.
As much as I hate the prick, Manny is a far better hitter. All around player, Mantle. Hard to determine what role the banned substances played with Manny's career however.
From Baseball Reference, based on a 162 game season:
Avg Mantle season - 36 HR 102 RBI .298 BA .421 OBA .557 SA
Avg Manny season - 41 HR 133 RBI .315 BA .412 OBA .594 SA
In 250+ fewer games, Manny has 250 more RBI's. Like Judge said, think what Mantle's career was if he laid off the booze. His stats really dropped off after 1961.
Not saying the #'s don't lie. But you also have to take in the fact at what Chuck Booms Stated above.
We live or have Lived in the "Juiced Ball" era in the past 15+ Years
It was hard enough for me to write Manny name next to Mantle's and Compare the two.
I think if you put Mantle in Today's Game, it wouldn't be close.
That's just Me...:drink:
The game is so much different today. Mantle didn't have to face closers. Didn't face blacks/latinos for half of his career either. Remember, Detroit and Boston were the last two teams to have them, and that was around 60-61
it's sad when it comes across the ticker that manny is going to pass mantle on the alltime hr list. same thing w/gayrod and harmon killebrew. the roid players have taken the fun out of lifetime stats, one of things baseball was all about.
That's just not true. You must be reading from a sports almanac from 1957, as since then Frank Robinson and Yaz have done it. But your point is well made otherwise.
Manny is awesome. But while his numbers during this "juiced ball" era are excellent, they don't quite dominate like Mantle's when compared to his time. Not that the 50's didn't have great numbers overall as well, but the 60's, after 1961, didn't offer those great numbers as often. Mantle was more feared. But like I said, Manny is awesome and productive and makes this a close argument.
